by setting KEYFRAMES
(read, what FC/e's built-in Help-feature tells about it)
resize and set pic to start position
set keyframe
move playhead in timeline to desired length
set pic to end position
set keyframe …

I am new to Final Cut Express and don't understand why I am unable to drag transitions into Canvas? Something wrong in my setup? It's not the overlays they are "on" so can anyone advise me please, by the way the "L" doesn't appear in the bottom left hand corner either? and by the way how can I get rid of that irritating Blue badge saying "AutoFill your contact details" all mine are in "address book" already!

You can't drag a transition into the canvas. If you're dragginmg a transition from the effects tab you drag it between the edit point of two clips in the timeline.
Make sure show edit overlays is turned on in the Canvas view popup.

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output
    Many thanks

Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
+a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
    +b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
+c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
+d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
+e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
+f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
+g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
    2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • Device Controls in Final Cut Express-how to disable device control??

How do I disable device control on a 3ccd panasonic mini dv camcorder using final cut express. It is very simple on final cut pro, but for some reason I cannot figure it out on final cut express. Do I need to do something with the camera itself first?

Switch to the DV Converter option?

  • Final cut X-- how do you open previous projects?

i must be missing something really basic. How do you open previous projects in Final Cut X? When I try to open one it hangs on "loading (nameofproject) into time line.

You need to provide more information. Are you seeing it within the FCP interface properly when you go to show the Project Library?  If so, I would click on it to select it and then open the Inspection window and click on Modify Event References and select proceed from there. I'm assuming you have not moved the project from it's proper folder....

  • Compressor 4 and Final Cut 7, how do you send a sequence?

Just bought Compressor 4 and having a problem sending a sequence to it from Final Cut 7, and the old version of Compressor is gone. Any ideas what to do?

If you have FCP X, Motion 5, Compressor 4 and FCS 3 installed, FCS 3 should work as intended. You don't need to place FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 into a folder and move FCS out of it's folder. If you do this; FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 won't be able to be updated and you probably won't be to add plug-ins and add-ons to them.
I have the setup like the above paragraph and everything works as intended.
besottedly... I figured out the other day the work-around that you posted. Makes life easier!!!
    iMac 27", 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3, 2TB HD + 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5 • FCS 3 • FCP X • Motion 5 • Compressor 4 • OS X 10.7 (Lion) • iPad 1&2 • Apple Tv 2

  • Why does Final Cut Express on my Macbook make desktop go to black?

FCE is very erratic, and when launched often--usually--turns the screen black when I click on any part of the desktop. Is it a problem with the settings, somehow?. I've removed the program, rebooted. reinstalled the application and that has not solved the problem. This is extremely frustrating. Has anyone a solution? I've worked with FCP easily in past years, but have a MacBook now which does not allow the use of FCP. HELP quickly, PLEASE! Juanita K

Might want to go the FCE forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936&start=0
Initially, is FCE an Intel/UB app?
Does your graphics card support it?

  • FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4.01 - losing quality while exporting to file

    Hey guys,
I'm dealin with a basic problem, which has been probably reviewed before, but just wanted to present my personal issue with it, and wonder if anyone could help me with this.
I shot clips with Canon 550d (1920x1080 30fps) and then converted them with Mpegstreamclip using Apple Intermediate Codec to 1280x720 30fps (however which also concerns me, in the browser i can see that they're 1280x720, but on the timeline after clicking Item properties, they are clearly 1920x1080). Easy Setup is set to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30 (maybe that's the part i'm doing wrong).
The thing is, it looks perfect, sharp and smooth on the canvas, but after exporting it loses it's depth of colours and sharpness etc.
Settings I'm using for exporting are those suggested f.e. by Vimeo site:
    Compression: H264
    Frame Rate: Current
    Key Frames: every 30
    Data Rate: limited to 5000kbps
Size: HD 1280x720 16:9 (tried also with 1280x720 HD but seems the same naturally)
Frame Reordering - ticked (it's done automatically, should i untick it?)
    Mac details: Mac OS X 10.6.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 2,5 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
You can check the result here:

    or

I'm really looking forward to any tips that can help. Thank You very very much:)

Use *MPEG Streamclip* to convert the MPEG2 files to QuickTime using Apple Intermediate Codec. However, if you shot 4:3 video then you may have to convert the video to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC instead of Apple Intermediate Codec. These are selections you make in MPEG Streamclip. (Your camera can record video as 4:3 or 16:9 standard def but there is precious little information about its 16:9 mode. You may have to play around with some of the settings in MPEG Streamclip.) Once you have converted the files, you will import the converted files into FCE (FCE > File > Import > Files).
Do note, however that you also need to have the *QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component* installed on your Mac. You may need to buy it if you don't already have it. (Links provided in my previous post.)
QuickTime7 Pro is not the app you need to do this conversion.

  • How do you fit still images (jpegs) to match clips in Final Cut Pro 7?

The images are too small and the clip can be seen on the borders.  I tried making them bigger b/f dragging but that distorted the image.   I shot the video in 16:9 and shot the pictures with my IPhone not using HD.

Now, are you asking about a procedure in FCP7? Cuz this is the FCPX forum. But, if you are asking how your conform images to fit "LIKE" FCP7, but in FCPX... Here's how. In addition to the transform / crop tools, go to your inspector. In the "Spatial Conform" section there is a drop down for "fit."

  • How do you make an image enlarge on hover, like on the new google image search?

    Here's an example:
    http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=imghp&biw=1109&bih=690&q=cat&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10& aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
When you roll over the image it enlarges.  I like it because you don't have to click anything, and you hover over a bunch of images without refreshing the page or having an obnoxious popup you have to close.
Is there a ways to create this in dreamweaver?  Do you have to make 2 different image sizes (like in the dijointed rollovers)?
    Thanks!  I love this forum!
    Kate

You have to insert a rollover object.  Not sure what version you are working in.  But you should have the option to select "insert", "Rollover Object" then you followi the guide.  You will need to create 2 copies of your image - one that is smaller that will be your thumbnail and then the larger image.  The first thing you will be asked for is an image ID - give it whatever name you want, but I recommend lowercase letters only.  The 2nd thing will be to insert your thumbnail as a jpg and the you insert the larger image, again as a thumbnail.  Don't forget to gill in the alternate id name as well - can be the same as your original id name.
    THIS IS IMPORTANT
After you insert the image you must switch to code view and delete the size parameters that appear after the image.
I hope this makes sense...but if you need further help....just ask.

  • Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 7

I have been working at school on Final Cut Pro 7
I just bought Final Cut Express 4 thinking it would be a cheaper way for me work at my home computer. However, when I open my Final Cut files (created in Pro 7) I get a message that says their format is too new for Final Cut Express 4.
Is there a solution to my problem? Is it really not possible to go back and forth between Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Express 4?
Is there some creative way of making this work? Help!

Unfortunately not. You can start the project in FCE. Open it FCP, but once it's saved in FCP, it will no longer open in FCE. (It's not supposed to anyway, though it does rarely in some cases where very little is done in FCP.)

  • What's the deal with Final Cut Express HD and me?

A few months ago, I encountered a lot of problems when I was trying to capture some HD video using Final Cut Express H.D. I've set my camera (a JVC GR-HD1U) to the MPEG2 setting, and I changed the set up in Final Cut to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. The good news is that I was able to capture for about 15 seconds. Then the capture stops, and a message comes up telling me that I have reached the end of the tape. Only I haven't.
    So.....what's the deal here?
Is there something that I am overlooking, or doing wrong? Or is it just not meant to be for me to capture HD Video?
If someone could let me know, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks everyone.

Am I right in thinking this camera isn't compatible/on the supported list? Does it work with iMovie? Perhaps you could capture there and import into FCE?
I see in your earlier post Manson Root had captured from this camera successfully. Perhaps they will reply again.

  • Sharing Editing Duties Using Final Cut Express 4.0

I'm fairly new to Final Cut Express. I'm working on a video project with a colleague. He has been working on the project for some time on his Mac. How can I copy his files to aloow me to continue editing the project on my Mac. What files & directories must be copied?
    Doug

    Hi
    I do
    a. You must have exactly same version of FinalCut on each Mac (but Your own licenses of course)
One can not have FCE 3 and one FCE 4 or FC-Pro on the other/s.
    b. I use an external hard disk
    • MUST BE Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO !
    • SHOULD be a FireWire one - as USB/USB2 performs badly
    c. I make a new folder on this ext. hd, and in this I Direct ALL - Scratch disks, FC-movie project document, all photos used and all extra audio so it contains as follows
    • Audio Render Files
    • Autosave Vault
    • Captured Scratch
    • MOVIE PROJECT DOCUMENT
    • Thumbnail Cache Files
    • Wavform Cache Files
to this all needed material as
    • Photos
    • Audio
    • Texts and documentations (my movie notes and structure)
Then I move this external HD in between locations and reconnect media to be able to cont. the project building.

  • Final cut express compatibility?

hi, i have the imac below which i bought in august this year. I want to buy the Final Cut Express 3.5 HD but some one has said to be careful because the graphics card on this machine will not support it.
Is that true? I think this is the graphics card on my machine, ATY,RadeonX1600
and the final cut express specs suggest,
    * Any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU
am I right to suspect my card is not the right spec?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Just in case my first reply left any doubts or ambiguity - your iMac will work perfectly with FCE 3.5.
    They are an ideal combination.
You are probably getting confused with earlier versions of FCE which will still work with the new Intel powered Macs but will be a bit slow.
    Ian.
