Sorry to ask a popular question but....I keep losing internet connection...

Afternoon,
I recently bought an iMac (about a month ago) - I am quite new to the Mac world and have posted a couple of questions previously. I am using Mac OS X version 10.7.2 - 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (although I'm sure you can see that from here?)
I have noticed that I lose internet connection frequently which hasn't particurly impressed me as I then browse Safari on my iphone without issues. I use Virgin broadband (20mb) although no one ever gets that much I know! ;-)
I am also on a wireless connection - yes I could plug an ethernet cable in but why should I be needing to? I'm a little annoyed as I've spent a lot of money on this computer which I do love dearly, however, I do understand that nothing is perfect and on the mega annoying side, my friends keep slating me saying "See? Told you Macs are crap...blah blah..."
This never happened when I did have a PC so why does this seem to happen with Macs?
The reason I bought a Mac was purely because it is a lovely machine, it is pretty and I did actually think that I'd be having pretty much null problems with one. I also am a bit of a photographer and the screen on this Mac is amazing and pretty awesome for editing my photos. My old Gateway laptop died of BIOS death and lasted a record breaking 6 years. Prior to that, I had another laptop which was crap and died after two years, then a PC before then which was unspeakably awful. Many friends of mine have macs that have been with them for 10 years minimum, this was why I decided to buy one, for longevity purposes!
Anyway, I am sorry to ramble on but, is there something that I can do about this persistent interruption of internet? Can I do something to configure my settings?
Would really appreciate thoughts, views and some help of course. ;-)
Thanks very much
Pandora

Sometimes it's an interference issue related to all the items that use 2.4Ghz frequency.
Quote from attached article:
If you experience less-than-optimal performance on your wireless network due to interference from other wireless devices, you may be able to reduce the effect of interference by changing to a different channel on your wireless network. Less-than-optimal performance may be characterized by low signal strength in the AirPort menu bar, slow connection to the Internet, or slow file transfers between wireless computers. Simply reset the AirPort base station and it will attempt to use the 2.4 and 5GHz channels with the least interference when it starts up.

Also in your router, use WPA2 security.  WEP doesn't work well with new Macs.
