"Sort Album" field

Does the iPod classic use the sort album field so it will display albums in non alpha order like iTunes can, the 5.5G ipod ignores them, hoping the classic will not

The short answer is no, not really. The much longer answer is contained in the thread below at iLounge. You should pay particular attention to posts by brendan99.

  • Sort Artist field: how do you make it's data appear in the Artist list?

Usually, if I have an album by a particular artist already (e.g. Paul McCartney) and then add another which I want listed under the same artist (e.g. Wings), then there's no problem. I would just enter Paul McCartney in the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist fields for the Wings album and I'd only have Paul McCartney listed under the artists (in List View).
However, occasionally this doesn't work and I want to know how to sort it. I imported an album by The Jacksons, entered Michael Jackson in the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist fields, which resulted in The Jacksons being listed amongst the artists alphabetically as if Michael Jackson, although still displayed as The Jacksons. I then imported a Michael Jackson album and entered the same data in the same fields, and although the albums were displayed together and alphabetically listed as if Michael Jackson, they were listed amongst the artists as The Jacksons. I want to see Michael Jackson listed. I have it that way in 2 other libraries. I think this has occured because I entered The Jacksons' album first in a library which contained no Michael Jackson and therefore The Jacksons have taken precedence. How can I sort this?

As I see it the *Album Artist* field should keep tracks of an album together when different Artists are credited on an album. It does work this way in iTunes but not on most iPods. The *Sort Album Artist* field is used to control where that Album Artist is listed among others. e.g. to control whether "The Beatles" get sorted under "B" or "T". While linking different Artist values with an overal Album Artist makes sense, I don't think that the logic of Sort Album Artist was ever intended to merge different values of Album Artist.
Apple don't appear to be working to resolve this issue since it has been evident for quite some time. The workarounds I suggest in the post linked above will give one cover in cover flow, one album in the albums menu and one artist in the artist menu if applied consistently.
With your Paul McCartney/Paul McCartney & Wings issue for example, my preference would be to use the original album artists as credited. Otherwise change the Artist & Album Artist to "Paul McCartney" and then, if you wish, add \[As Wings\] to the album title or individual tracks. If you used Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist to make "Micheal Jackson" sort as "Jackson, Michael", "Janet Jackson" sort as "Jackson, Janet" and "The Jacksons" as "Jacksons" then all the related artists would be listed in the same place, but remain distinct.

  • Sort Artist and Sort Album tags don't update

Having spent a lot of time over the years getting the metadata in my iTunes library just right, I've noticed a frustrating problem when it comes to iTunes Match.
I make use of 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' tags so that my library is sorted by artist surname (eg. Lennon, John).
This always worked correctly when I syncronised my music via iTunes, but since switching over to iTunes Match this has become problematic.
When I initially signed up for iTunes Match, my Library moved over correctly - honouring the sort order tags that I had added. However, When I add NEW music to the library and subsequently change the sort tag, the change does not propegate to iTunes Match (Though it does appear correct in iTunes on my Mac). So the result is now a mixed sort order on my iOS devices - some by first name and some by second.
Under iOS 5.0 and iTunes 10 I used to be able to get around this with a little forethought - I would turn iTunes Match OFF on the Mac before adding any new songs, then I would edit the tags and then switch Match back on. This would rescan the library and add the new tracks to the cloud complete with correct metadata.
This workaround no longer works under iOS 6 and iTunes 11.
I have tried switching iTunes match off on my iPhone and restarting it. This does not work either.
Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way to 'force' the metadata to be updated?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I also am finding it impossible to convince my iPhone that the Album Sort field exists. This is especially odd considering when I view my Home Shared music from my iPhone, it works exactly correctly. I have verified that the tags are being uploaded to iTunes Match by viewing the songs from another computer that has iTunes Match. So, for some reason, iOS 6 will not sort by the Album Sort field when using iTunes Match music.
Does anyone have any sort of fix or workaround for this problem? I've submitted Feedback to Apple.

  • Sort Album by Artist/Year Not Working Correctly

For the Beatles, I have bought 3 albums from iTunes - Please Please Me, With the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour. For some reason, using the above sorting Magical Mystery Tour appears at the top of the list, despite the fact that the year field is correctly entered for all 3. There is no info in the 'Sort Year' field either. I have quite a good understanding of how the iTunes library works, but this has me baffled (and annoyed)

    dannycorker wrote:
It appears they are, although I refuse to believe this is the accepted behaviour - has no one else complained about this?
It could simply be a weakness is the way this was all designed. If you look at the information Gracenote uses, it's not unusual for all tracks on a 60's compilation album to be incorrectly listed as the same year, often the year the compilation was released. The same thing tends to happen with re-issued albums. That's down to whoever inputs the information into Gracenote for that album, often a bored record company employee.
First of all, you could try changing the year for each documentary to the year the album was produced and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you have to decide how to handle it.
    Accept it as it is.
Change the year for the documentary to the same year as the album and simply kid yourself that it's the correct year. (I'm not being flippant, but if the documentary is all footage from album release year, then "technically", the doumentary is from that 60's year.)
Leave the year of the documentary track blank, but put the year (2010) into the track's "Comments" field instead.
Propose a workable solution to Apple via Apple Feedback. (I am being a bit flippant now. Sorry, but you'll be in for a long wait before anything might change.)
Get Gracenote to change their text fields, get the people who input the information into Gracenote to do so correctly and then get Apple to change iTunes to recognise those changes. (Now I am being very flippant. Good luck with this one!) Oh! And hope Apple never decide to change from Gracenote to someone else!
Number 2 or 3 are probably your best bet.

  • Sort albums in recorded order?

This is one thing that annoys me and hopefully there's a solution. Perhaps a script?
Some albums (say Dark Side of the Moon for instance) MUST be played in the order that was on the album/tape/CD, whatever. I have a huge library and would love to be able to sort the albums I have in the order they SHOULD be. I already spend waaaay too much time sorting my library and making sure everything is perfect but, I can only get so anal about it.
Is there possibly a script that could sort albums into the order that the artists recorded them in? I'm thinking something that could search Amazon for albums, see the order of the songs and sort accordingly. Nice thought eh? I realize the odds of this being around are about nil but, is there any progress on something like this or a place to look? Doug's Scripts doesn't have anything that I can see along these lines.

On some tunes, yes. On others, no. Some have track
numbers in correct order. Some have no track numbers.
Aha. If you have albums without track numbers, well of course iTunes won't play them in the correct order — it doesn't know what the correct order is! Every album track needs to have the "Track Number X of Y" fields filled out; otherwise, iTunes has no way of ordering the tracks within an album.
These fields should be filled in automatically when iTunes rips your CDs, since all of the track numbers are available from the CDDB. If they're not, then, yes, you'll need to edit them by hand. (I can say for sure that "Dark Side of the Moon" is in the CDDB, though, so re-importing the CD while you're connected to the internet should get you your track numbers.)

  • Sort album by artist or album by artist/year & compliations behavior

    I am running iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Windows 7 (64-bit)
I was wondering about the behavior of sort album by artist or album by artist/year. Instead of sorting solely by artist or artist/year, it seems to take into account album artist. Is this correct? Previous versions of iTunes (iTunes 7 and iTunes 8) used only the album and artist field not album artist. Is there anyway to force it to sort solely by artist and ignore album artist?
I am wondering because I currently use the album artist field to hold information about featured artists, featured instrumentalists, conductors, alternative band names, etc and reserve the artist field to describe the more generalized album artist. For me, this organizational scheme works better because my iPod does not feature offer any access to album artist. My current solutions are to roll back to iTunes 7 or 8 or change the sort album artist field for every entry which has information in the album artist field; neither of which are long term solutions.
Finally, I would like to group compliations (musical soundtracks, movie soundtracks, etc) where the artist might differ by album but still use the sort by album by artist to organize the rest of my music using List View. Is this possible?
I really wish iTunes provided more options for sorting music.
    Thanks!

Album Artist has been supported since iTunes 7 (7.1 I think) and normally takes preference over Artist when it comes to grouping tracks in iTunes. As you say the iPod Classic doesn't work quite the same way. You'll find my extensive thoughts on fixing things at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp You might find that different vlaues of Group Compilations and Use Album Artists restore the view you were familiar with, otherwise it might be time to rethink the strategy.
If it is simply a mattter of swapping Album Artist with Artist then I can (and will) rustle up a script for that... It will end up on the list at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp shortly. More complex rearrangements of properties are also possibe once you know what you want to achieve.

  • When you show all albums, why can you only sort albums by best sellers, release date, etc., sometimes?

Sometimes I can sort albums by release date and other times I don't have the option. Its frustrating. I tried to look in preferences but couldn't change it.

I agree that Apple should improve the year field to be an actual date.
I am not 100% happy doing this, but when you have multiple albums from a single artist for the same release year, a temporary solution is to chage the album title by adding an outline type letter before album titles for that year, so that they appear in the correct order:
    David Bowie
    1977
    a. Low
    David Bowie
    1977
    b. "Heroes"
    etc
This could help in the short term until Apple changes that field.

  • Edit the Sort Album

Is it possible to edit the sort album category for multiple songs? I put all the songs that I do not have the complete CDs for under an album called 'No Album' and I want to make the Sort Album for this simply 'Z' so it will be listed after the other albums by that artist instead of in the middle. I would like to be able to do this without having to individually edit over 1000 songs. Any ideas?

    I figured it out.
Then right click the title bars and add the 'sort artist' or whichever field you want to edit so that it is displayed as a column along with 'artist', 'album', etc.
Change the information in the field you want for one of the songs, then select all the songs you want to change (along with the one you already have changed) and right click them and at the bottom of the menu is 'Apply sort field', which gives you another menu of selections. Just chose the one you want and it will change all of the selected songs to match the field you select with the first song you changed (assuming the other songs DO NOT have any info in the same field).
For instance, I wanted to change the 'Sort Artist' field of all of my Jimi Hendrix songs, because for some reason, iTunes was not recognizing it as a person's name and automatically populating the 'Sort Artist' field. So I changed one song's 'Sort Artist' field to say 'Hendrix, Jimi' and then selected ALL of his songs and right clicked them. I went down to the 'Apply Sort Field' and chose 'Same Artist' and it populated ALL of the Jimi Hendrix songs with 'Hendrix, Jimi' in the 'Sort Artist' field.
    Hope that makes sense....it's 4:30am here...lol

  • How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.

    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • How can I sort albums by album artist while keeping compilations together?

Argh, I'm getting a bit exasperated. Basically I just want to be able to scroll through cover flow and see all my albums with one cover representing each album, with all the compilations near the end under "V" for various. Surely most people would want to scroll through their albums in this way??
So I've gone through and added all the album artist info, which has worked fine for the artist albums. But for all the "Various" ones, instead of doing the logical thing and grouping them together by album, iTunes orders these all by track artist. There doesn't seem to be any secondary sort function..
I'm always defending Mac and Apple products for their logical applications and ease of use, and now I feel let down.. If there's a way around this please let me know! Thanks,
    Malinna

The trouble you're encountering is that iTunes sorts first by Album Artist, then by Artist. Thus, within each Album Artist, you'll get multiple Artist clumps.
You want to sort "Album by Artist". This will, first, strip out all your compilations and sort them to the end of your library, then sort using the hierarchy Album Artist (or Artist if there is none) > Album > Disc # > Track #. Click the Album column header until Album by Artist is displayed. (You can also choose Album by Year, which will sort albums chronologically within Album Artist.)
If you want to keep albums together, you'll need to sort on an Album column; other columns are bound to clump things by whatever you're sorting on.

I want the ZEN to show the albums like in WINDOWS XP! how hard can this be!!!
Thanks for the help in advance!

    Hi,
The Creative ZEN organizes songs according to the ID3tag of the music file, not by folders. If you want to arrange the music files in the order you want, please check and make sure that the music files are tagged properly. You may need a third-party tag editor to do this.

  • Sorting albums in photo

I do not see the option of sorting albums by date in the new photo

I do not see the option of sorting albums by date in the new photo
There isn't such an option. You can sort the albums manually or by title.  As a workaround, make the date a part of the name of the album, for example "2015-04-Birthday album".

  • Sort Albums Doesn't Work

I have a bunch of albums in iPhoto that I am trying to sort, and it just doesn't work.
When I select them, right-click, and choose "Sort Albums" from the context menu, either *nothing* happens, or else the order of the albums is altered in some seemingly random way but the results are not alphabetical order.
I don't see how the program could somehow not understand "alphabetical" so there must be something keeping it from actually doing the sort.  Anybody have any clues?

When there is a selection, if "Sort Albums" will do nothing then the option should be greyed out.  Otherwise, it should sort those items which are selected.  Doing nothing and giving the user no feedback is not acceptible.
You are right, that is confusing.  It is either a bug or a poor design.
You may want to send feedback to Apple - use the form: Apple - Aperture - Feedback

  • Can we sort one field based on other field in messsage mapping !!

    Hi Folks,
I have got source xml with couple of Vendors, Vendors has got promotions on different products with different dates. If I sort date field, product quantity is not sorting. How Can I sort both fields at the same time, if I sort Promotion date field in ascending order, the product quanitity has to sort respectively?
Any one can help in this please , any links are examples etc..

Ex: if one vendor has 'n' number products promotions on 3 different dates, 3 "ProductDemandinfluenceevennotifications" has to generate, that three promotion dates and quantities has to respectively.
That ZA02 (Qty) value has to go Quantity target field.
