Sort albums alphabetically

Within folders, I was pretty well able to manually place albums alphabetically. Then all of a sudden, all albums as well as folders are not in MY order.... I could never get folders in order anyhow. What is the secret to alphabetizing folders as well as albums within folders?

*The sort albums sorts all albums and folders in the sidebar - I have not found a way to sort the albums within a folder.*
AHHHHH....that answers that
*Folders always stay at the top of the list - you should be able to drag and drop folders within the folder section*
I CANNOT get my folders in any order! If I try, the folder I'm moving jumps into the folder I'm trying to get between!
*and albums within the album section - within a folder you should be able to drag and drop albums rearranging that folder*
Yes, I've finally gotten them back into alpha order but looks like there would be a better way. I guess I must have sorted accidently and gotten everything crazy....
*Are you running the latest update - iPhoto 7.1 -- these comments are based on it*
Yes, I am. Thanks for your comments.

  • How to alphabetically sort albums and folders within a folder

Much to my dismay, I discovered that iPhoto will not alphabetically sort folders or albums that are within a folder. It will only sort folders and albums (in separate groups) that are at the "root" level beneath the ALBUMS label. I used "iPhoto Folder Import 1.0" to import multiple clip art and stock photo files which resulted in many nested folders and albums that did not stay in alphabetical order (because iPhoto often randomize them when you add them to an existing folder).
Here's how to get around the problem.
Albums: 1. Select all the albums in a folder. 2. Drag the albums to the ALBUMS label so they end up on the root level. 3. Right click on any of the selected albums and choose "Sort Albums." 4. Drag the still selected albums back into their original folder. They should retain their alphabetical order.
Folders: 1. Close all the folders that you want to alphabetize. 2. Follow steps 1-4 above with "folders" in place "albums."
I cannot understand why sorting won't work within folders. I also do not understand why we don't have the option to alphabetically interleave folders and albums. The only way to achieve this is to create folders for just one album, which seems silly.

Thank you for a quick response.
How do you suggest i resolve the issue of different data types in order to use this function? I have tried a few different ways and have whenever I adjust, it wont run through my sub VI's correctly due to being different data types.
You have to READ THE FILES.  Jeff just showed you how to use a FOR loop to go through the files.  You still need to open the files, read them and then process the data.
I had assumed from CSmith8's original post that the text file processing vi worked.  just drop that vi into the for loop and wire the file name in!
Alternately, attach the code that processes the file and a sample file.  I bet we can show you a thing or two about how to do it cleaner and faster  then point you to the right learning resources so one day you can show us some new tricks.

  • Can I disable sort order, so I can simply stack My albums alphabetically?

    Hello
Over the past year or so I've been updating smart playlists by adding My own info to sort columnes, like! Fast, Slow etc..
Up until now everything was fine, because I had it all ordered by date added, but I've just got a new laptop, and of course the date added is useless now, but not only that, but if I resort to album, any of the songs that I've made changes to "Grouping and Sort Album" are scattered.
It goes like (example) Track  = CD 01. Track = CD 02. Track = CD 01. Track = CD 15
    instead of simply Track = CD 01 T = CD 01 T = CD 01 T = CD 01...
I had no option to use anything other than Sort Album, as everything else that is rewritable was already in use by other genre's (more smart playlists).
I'd be delighted if anyone could help. Of course I can work around it, if there isn't a solution, as a new playlist I've made has mostly only all new music, but for the sake of being tidy.
    Thanks.

Command (right) - click on one of the albums and select Sort Albums from the contextual menu:

  • Sort Albums Doesn't Work

I have a bunch of albums in iPhoto that I am trying to sort, and it just doesn't work.
When I select them, right-click, and choose "Sort Albums" from the context menu, either *nothing* happens, or else the order of the albums is altered in some seemingly random way but the results are not alphabetical order.
I don't see how the program could somehow not understand "alphabetical" so there must be something keeping it from actually doing the sort.  Anybody have any clues?

When there is a selection, if "Sort Albums" will do nothing then the option should be greyed out.  Otherwise, it should sort those items which are selected.  Doing nothing and giving the user no feedback is not acceptible.
You are right, that is confusing.  It is either a bug or a poor design.
You may want to send feedback to Apple - use the form: Apple - Aperture - Feedback

  • Sorting albums in iphoto

I have a lot of different albums which appear in the order in which they were created.  I am happy to keep my photos in date order, but would prefer the albums to be alphabetically listed.  Is there a way of doing this.  Also can I file albums within folders to make things easier?  Many thanks

1 - no it won't but of course you have a backup so if anything goes wrong you can go back to just before it happened
2 - sorting albums does just that - sorts albums - it does nothing to photos or to events ore anything else

  • Is there anyway to sort albums by date created???

Seems hard to believe that on earlier iphotos - I know on latest version this can be undone - if you accidentally sorted albums (friend did it) then you are stuck with alphabetical order even though your albums before that had a chronological order representing many years of picture taking.. now this order would take days to re-establish. Any tricks..? thanks

Yes of course but sadly this was long time ago and backup no longer relevant - should have done it at the time. But now I guess nothing can be done. Don't understand why their isn't a sub menu under sort for by date, ascending descendin etc like there usually is..?

  • IPhoto Sort Albums right click problem

I am running IPHOTO '09 Version 8.1.2 and I am trying to alphabetically sort my albums within a specific folder. When I right click and choose sort albums, nothing happens. This right click function previously worked. Any suggestions on a setting that may have accidentally changed?
There are about 175 albums within each folder, so it's far too time consuming to do it manually.

Two choices - load your backup or do it manually

Ed - by sequence of numbers, are you talking about the rectangle with the arrow that sorts by track number?  I've tried to follow your directions to Mona but my playlist still gets burned to CD in alpha order.  driving me crazy.  any other suggestions?   thanks, Chris
Chris, The sequence number is the first column of numbers, to the left of the Name column.  It always goes 1, 2,3  etc.  It is not the same as the Track Number, which has its own column.
As a precaution before burning, make sure that Shuffle is tunred off, and that you right-click the playlist name and choose 'Copy to Play Order"  (although technically they should not affect the burn).

  • Re-sorting album info in i-tunes

    Hey guys
Quick question, probably a duplicate but nevermind. When going through the i-tunes set-up, I clicked for i-tunes to auto-arrange my music for me. Little did I know it would arrange albums alphabetically rather than year of release. Eg. Beatles Abbey Rd will appear in I-tunes list before Beatles Revolver even though the latter was released first.
How do you re-sort this? Many thanks
    Ben

Try adding the years column into the Library. Open iTunes, right click at the top of any column and in the pop-up box click on Year. If you want the library sorted by year then just click on the Year column

  • Sorting Albums and Folders

Is there a way to sort albums and/or folders (such as by alphabet) other than manually moving them into the order you want?
Also, regarding difference between an album and a folder, am I correct that a folder may hold several albums but an album cannot hold another album or folder? Please distinguish the two and their differences for me.
    Thanks for your help.
    Vernon

in the source pane on the left right click and choose "sort albums" to sort them Alpha - which is the only choice - and there is no undo so be sure you want that
albums hold photos - folders hold either albums or other folders but not photos

  • Can't sort albums in a folder

I keep my photos organized by creating folders for each year. If I click on the 2010 folder, I can see that all of the photos sorted chronologically, from top to bottom.
Because I don't want to carry my entire photo library on my iPad, I also drag events into the 2010 folder and manually sync them with the iPad.
Here's my problem: When I drag an albums into the 2010 folder, they seem to have no logical sort order. They don't list alphabetically by event name, and they don't sort chronologically by date; there's no predicting where they'll show up in the list. Clicking on "Sort Albums" does noting as far as I can tell.
Is it possible to get albums in a folder to sort, and if so, how do I do it?

You need to grant EXECUTE privilege on all those application components to PUBLIC user. You can do this by clicking on the "Grant Access" link pertaining to each of the components in the navigator and granting execute privilege on the components to the public user.
    This will work.

  • How can you sort albums in coverflow by category??

My cover flow shows over 200 albums alphabetized by artists.
Is there any way to have coverflow sorted to display the albums sorted by
categories and within categories by artists?
Example-I have three categories of albums
    classical
    jazz
    rock
I'd like to have coverflow display all the classical albums first
then followed by jazz category, and by rock category
    Thanks for your help!

I would also be interested in sorting options, and also displaying different fields under the coverflow picture.
    Standards seems to be
    - Album
    - Album Artist
Can his b changed to different options?
    Thanks

How can I sort albums in a genre by release date in the itunes store

Did you figure this out? Am having the same problem.

Changed to column view, and could not find the artist at all in any of the sub categories.

  • How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.

    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • How can I sort albums by album artist while keeping compilations together?

Argh, I'm getting a bit exasperated. Basically I just want to be able to scroll through cover flow and see all my albums with one cover representing each album, with all the compilations near the end under "V" for various. Surely most people would want to scroll through their albums in this way??
So I've gone through and added all the album artist info, which has worked fine for the artist albums. But for all the "Various" ones, instead of doing the logical thing and grouping them together by album, iTunes orders these all by track artist. There doesn't seem to be any secondary sort function..
I'm always defending Mac and Apple products for their logical applications and ease of use, and now I feel let down.. If there's a way around this please let me know! Thanks,
    Malinna

The trouble you're encountering is that iTunes sorts first by Album Artist, then by Artist. Thus, within each Album Artist, you'll get multiple Artist clumps.
You want to sort "Album by Artist". This will, first, strip out all your compilations and sort them to the end of your library, then sort using the hierarchy Album Artist (or Artist if there is none) > Album > Disc # > Track #. Click the Album column header until Album by Artist is displayed. (You can also choose Album by Year, which will sort albums chronologically within Album Artist.)
If you want to keep albums together, you'll need to sort on an Album column; other columns are bound to clump things by whatever you're sorting on.
