Sort and view contacts by company

Our company would like to sort and view all contacts in our iPhones and iPads by company and not a person's first or last name.  From all my research it appears that iOS is not capable of doing this. We consider this very important and would like to know how can we suggest this to Apple?  I understand there may be other apps that allow this, but, at least to my knowledge, Siri does not access them to locate contact info.

As suggested by Chris, send feedback to the link provided.
There a work around by changing the name (maybe too much work if you have thousands of contacts)
example:
First: John Doe
Last: XYZ corp
Company XYZ corp
First: Peter Pan
Last: XYZ corp
Company: XYZ corp

Is there any way I can view all my contacts by company in the native Mac Contacts program?  I can only see options to view by first or last name...

  • Sorting Contacts by company

Is there a way to view contacts by company.  What I am trying to do is group multiple contacts by their company.  I have chosen to view by "company, last name" but I would like to be able to search the company name to find the contact I seek.
    Thanks in advance.

Use the Search tool. It's the magnifying glass on the keyboard.
Of course, in my case on my Treo 680, when I do that, the searching of the Contacts database doesn't even happen till AFTER the first screen is filled and it has searched
    SheetToGo
    Documents To Go
    Word To Go
    Pics&Videos
any Mobile DB databases (5 of them on that first screen)
Then I need to select "Find More," and it searches one more Mobile DB database, then finally gets to the Contacts database.
So, I finally see the contact that I want on the second screen -- only because I don't have a lot of contacts with that particular company name that I searched.
I select the contact. But, it then shows me the full view of the contact record, not the Contacts database list view. So, I have to choose "Done."
Then I can finally move the cursor down to the proper phone number to tell the Treo 680 dial it.
    Not exactly convenient nor fast.
I believe this has changed from the way the Palm OS use to work. I think that if you wanted to find "Legacy Mortgage Company" with the older OS's that you could just type "Leg..." and be there. That was MUCH better. That is also the way it will still work on the Palm Desktop.
So, if you want it to go to Legacy Mortgage when you type "Leg..." you can move the contact name into another field, like making a first line of the "Title" field, and making the second line be the real title. But then, the contact name doesn't appear in the Contacts database list view at all. If you have ANY situation on your Palm where there are several contacts at the same company, that is not a good workaround, I don't think.
To make this situation all the worse and sillier that it works like this, the Palm Desktop works just the opposite. If you have a contact at Legacy Mortgage, you just type "Leg..." there and it takes you right to the record.
You would think Palm could at least be consistent.
If you sort by Company, Last Name, typing the first few letters of the company's name should take you too it, even it you do happen to have a name in the Last Name or First Name fields.
Why the hell did they change this? I've got 800+ contacts that I'll have check to see if I need to massage them around and change the fields where the name or company information is.
I was searching for ideas to this delima when I happened upon this thread. I'll keep looking to see if there are any real answers on the forum.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is probably not for you.

  • Will webOS 2.0 allow viewing contacts by groups?

    Hi!
One of the things that made my old Treo so useful was the ability to sort and view my contacts by groups.  For anyone in any kind of business, it is nearly essential to be able to do so.  When I got my Pre, I was definitely disappointed to find that I not only could not view my contacts by group, but I had to log on to Google on my computer in order to do any contact organization beyond "add" or "delete".
Will 2.0 allow us to have more flexibility with our contact management?  The handling of PIM data is what made Palm so great to me in the past.  I sincerely hope that if it is not introduced in the new OS version, at least the opportunity will be afforded to the excellent developers who have been making webOS the great tool it is today.
Thank you for any insight or information!

With the Contacts app open, if you just start typing it will automatically start filtering the display to show corresponding responses by either first or last name.  The more letters you enter, the narrower the responses.
Another work-around which can help with organization: Use the Company field.  It also responds to the same search method, such that if you have many contacts in the same "group" you can use the Company field to search for them.  For example, if you have many family members in your contacts list, use "Family" as the company name.  Then when you type Family, they will all appear alphabetically.
It's not as useful as the old Palm OS contacts database was, especially if you already use the Company field for a real company name.  But, it is useful to many.

  • Please tell me that I can sort my contacts by "Company,Last Name"

    I just purchased a Treo 650
I depend on being able to sort my Contacts by "Company, Last Name" where is this preference feature on the Treo 650 in Contacts.
If this is not possible the Treo becomes useless to me.
Please tell me I am missing something.

Yes you can "sort" by Company Name BUT....you cannot "search" by Company Name -- when you try a search it just keeps searching in the "name" fields and does NOT return a Company Name.
--if you know the name of the person you want to call (which you more than likely will) then searching by name is fine
    but
--if you can't remember their name (or there are multiple names) but want to look up the company and then scroll through list of names at that company -- forget it -- I can't make it work.

  • Sort contacts by company in the address book dialog

    Hi all,
When I create a new email, I click "to" to select the recipient. In the dialog box, I select my own address book (not the Exchange one), but I am not able to sort contacts by company. I only have display name and email columns. Right click does
    not works.
I red this was not possible, but it seems weird that I can sort by company in the Exchange address book and not in my own AB.
    Regards,
    Seb.

    Hi,
I can confirm that we cannot sort contacts by company in our own Address Books. As a workaround, we may use
Advanced Find beside the address book to find the people from a specific company.
Although Outlook is now a quite powerful tool, it is still not perfect. Outlook considers users' feeling very important and may make the change to make itself a more powerful and easy-to-use product.

  • Sort contacts by company

I just bough the new Iphone 4. Can you sort contacts by company rather than name?

In iOS 4 and 5 you could do it by creating the company name first, saving it and then going back to add the first and last name. In iOS 7 it is not possible to sort by company name no matter what you do.

  • Sort Contacts by Company Workaround

I keep all contacts on the iPhone and do not sync. I create a complete contact record for each person and sort and display them by last name. I then create a "contact" for each company, putting the company name in the Last Name field. I then "Add Field" and use the "Note" field to list all contact names with their title. This works as a simple cross reference to look up contacts by company name, and then go to their detail information. It's actually quite easy when there are only a few contacts at each company.

Since I started the company "contact" concept after creating full details for some individuals, the first company entries contain only names in the Note field. Now, I'll start putting the company address in that record, and just phone numbers, email address, etc. in the individual contact entries.
Note: I originally synced with my Outlook contacts, but so much garbage came over that I decided to not do that anymore after an extensive cleanup on the iPhone, leaving a small file of about 200 contacts. I just discovered the Windows Address Book option, and have synced with that to give me a clean backup.

  • N97 How to sort contacts by company name

Is it possible to sort contacts by company name rather than first name, last name etc?

This is a HUGE shortcoming of Nokia's contacts app, which is still the most awkward and "old style numeric keypad telephone" oriented applications in the Nokia software suite on smartphones.
It's the only reason why I am still sometimes missing my Blackberry. There you find everything so quickly, and not only just typing in the individual's name, nor having to use that Nokia general search tool.
But now that Nokia FINALLY introduced a year ago "finding names typing", without launching the contacts application first I still have the hope that Nokia will release one day a REALLY user friendly, fast and flexible fully integrated agenda suite...

  • Workaround - Sort Contacts by Company

Until Apple provides an update to allow sorting contacts by company, I found a short workaround.
Simply create a new contact, entering ONLY the company name. Save completely out of it (tapping "Save" twice.) Go back into the contact, tap Edit, and enter any other information you would as usual.
The contact will then forever sort by company, not by name.
    Cactus!

Another way to do this is after syncing. Your new addresses should sync with Address Book. Just go into Address Book, edit the contact and mark the check box that says Company.
I can't say that I do this every time I sync, but I just go down the list while I have a second or am sitting on hold waiting for somebody.

  • Sorting and Grouping in Projects View

In Projects view, when either of two of the three grouping options is selected, there are two sorts in effect: the groups themselves are sorted, and the contents of each group are sorted. These sorts are handled differently, depending on the grouping selected and the sort order selected.
(It appears that there is a bit of the old Apple voodoo in here. The results are arbitrary , but they seem to have been carefully chosen to meet most users expectations. That is to say -- and this is an Apple programming trait -- the arbitrariness is faithful to the expected users' needs, not to logic.)
There are four sorts available, and three groupings
    Sorts:
    . Name
    . Date -- Oldest First
    . Date -- Newest First
    . Library
    Groupings:
    . Ungrouped
    . Group by year
    . Group by folder
So that's twelve possible ways to display Projects in Projects view.
Let's look at a few of them. I'm going to refer to the groups as "Year groups" or "Folder groups" and to the contents of the groups as "Projects". So there is sorting of the groups, and sorting of the contents of the groups (same as "within the group"). These I'll refer to as "Groups sorting" and "Projects sorting".
    Sort: Date -- Newest First
    Grouping: Group by Year
Result: Year groups are sorted in the same order as Projects. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together.
    Sort: Date -- Oldest First
    Grouping: Group by Year
Results are as expected; a reversal of the "Newest First" sort, but with the same groups: Year groups are sorted in the same order as Projects. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together.
    Sort: Name
    Grouping: Group by Year
Result: Year groups are sorted by year, oldest first. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together. Projects are sorted alphabetically, descending.
    Sort: Library
    Grouping: Group by year
Result: Year groups are sorted by year, oldest first. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together. Projects are listed in the order they occur in the Library structure shown on the Library tab of the Inspector. (Note that this last is literal: a Project named "Aardvark Close-ups" if it's in a Folder named "Zoography" will be listed after all the projects in "Yellow Paintings" and all the Projects in "X-rays, thoracic" if those Projects are in alphabetical order by Folder name in the Library. You can see all the Projects in your Library listed on the Library tab of the Inspector by "{Option}+clicking" the disclosure triangle next to "PROJECTS & ALBUMS" twice.)
    Sort: Date - Newest First
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted by date, newest first. Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder.
    Sort: Date - Oldest First
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted by date, oldest first. Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder (where, again, Folder groups are sorted alpha-name, descending, and Projects are sorted alpha-name, descending).

Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. +I see those icons but note that those projects in folders will be in different sections arranged alpha, and then date within. Am I correct on that?+
    The answer is, it depends.
If "Group by year" is selected, the Groups-sorting will always be by date, regardless of the sort order specified. The Groups-sorting order will follow whatever is specified for the Projects sort order (or default to "oldest first").
If "Group by folder" is selected, the Groups-sorting will always be alphabetical, descending, regardless of the sort order specified. (So if you use Projects view, take care in naming your Folders. Use prefixes if needed to force a desired alpha sort.)
If "Ungrouped" is selected, there are no Groups and perforce no Groups-sorting.
That's all I have to say on this topic (today).
