Sort by Caption
I have a tricky issue. My newspaper requires pictures to have a certain file name format befoe I upload to them. I've been playing with the Custom name export options, but cannot figure out how to get what I need.
They want this:
mmdd_ncfe_make it green1
Where mmdd is the month and day that the story will run. I usually upload five days before the story runs if this is helpful. It's simple to prepend the current date, but, as far as I've been able to determine, the 'current day' variable won't accept a "+5".
The text in the middle is simple.
The numeral at the end is also simple, but Aperture wants to put "1 of 8" rather than just the numeral, and the Scripps server barfs at the "of X" part.
It's not like there are a lot of photos, more like 5-8 per week, so if I have to rename them possibly it's easier in the Finder?
Aperture 3.3.
Michael
Hi Michael,
First, your topic title is "Sort by Caption". Is that a mistake?
On to the question you ask. Afaict, the "mmdd" part of the desired file name can not be calculated because it is independent of any other reference point. You "usually upload five days before", which means that even if you could do "today+5d" in the file name, you'd still have to have something else for times when the story will run on some day other than "today+5d".
For 5-8 photos a week, I suggest using a naming convention with a "Custom" field that you fill out. "{Custom}{Counter}", where for each export you provide when prompted the actual 4-digit prefix you need, followed by an underscore, the 4-character code, and underscore, and the variable text.
If any part of "_ncfe_make it green" is invariable, then include it in the File Naming Preset.
You might consider creating duplicate Versions of each photo to be uploaded (stack these and make the dupes the Stack Picks; and optionally keyword or label them), and change the Version names. This would make it easy to group and find the Images you used to make files to upload. I suggest an Aperture Folder called something like "Scripps Uploads" with Albums carrying an identifying name (e.g.: May Day Parade).
If you have any need for more robust file naming outside of Aperture, I use and recommend NameMangler.

Is there a way to sort files in a folder by file name in elements 11?
When I want to print a contact sheet, I need the files pictures in the file name order. Elements 9 had this feature.
I have different needs, but I agree the lack of alphanumeric sort should be fixed. In my situation, it would be enough to have an option to automatically sort an album in alphabetical order. I would also like a sort by caption for albums.
In your case, that is with too many files in folders, the nearest workaround I have found would be:
- Select the images you need to sort (a folder for instance) and export them without changing names in a new folder.
- Import the result into the organizer.
- Select all files in the import batch and assign them a common date stamp.
Your copies should be shown in file name order, in thumbnail, folder or batch import view. But the date taken will be lost...
A solution could be to select both the original images and the edited ones, use the 'automatically suggest stacks' based on visual similarity. You won't lose the date information, but at the cost of twice the disk space. -
Why is this not an option? I'd like to sort by caption or even better subject ID
Yes, this is possible. Go to View>View Options... and for Column View pick a metadata set which includes the IPTC date.
Then, when you are in Column View in the browser pane you can click on the top of that column to order the images by it. Swapping back to Grid View will keep the order.
You can sort by any metadata you want in this manner.

I have iphoto album on Mac OSx operating system, and current IOS 5.1.1 I Pad with Iphoto intalled. Still when I sync the Mac OSX album to the iPad, the photo sort and caption does not sync to Ipad. Instead the album is installed on ipad only by date and time photo was taken. How do I get the correct sorting (and the captions) to translate on IPAD album?

Does Adobe platform have caption capability
I often use adobe with co-workers but the modules neve have caption which is a problem for me. I have to work twice as hard to understand what is being said. I think most modules and video these days do have caption so I was wondering how to teach co-workers to use that capability when they do video modules for work.
The video modules for what? Are you referring to video training or some sort of captioning while you're using an application?

Issues Missing files & duplicate files and not enough screen space
Hello everyone,
I'm using a 1.67 Ghz 15 in tibook with 1 gig of ram
I had issue yesterday, missing files, I was in the rating/keywords panel scrolling through my images, one was a bit soft so I deleted it using the command delete combo. Somehow all of the images in the project disappeared. They hadn't been moved to the trash, I looked, and looked and looked, I couldn't find them using a search, and it should have been easy, they were the first images that had been imported into Aperture.
So since I had copied the 70 files to my hardrive first I re-imported them. Couldn't see those either.
Deleted the project and re-imported again, worked fine, and I couldn't reproduce the problem.
When I went to export five images, (all the images had been re-named with a sequential suffix, Smith_01, Smith_02, Smith_03...), to my desktop so I could copy to our server, I remembered that I needed to update a caption on one image. (Could that caption box be any smaller?), anyway I exported again, I meant to only export the individual image but exported all five again. Instead of telling me there were duplicate files on the desktop it increased the sequential number of each duplicate file by 1. So now instead of one file of Smith_01, Smith _08, Smith 33, etc, I have the original and the Smith_01 file now has a matching image slugged Smith_02 on the desktop as well, along with all the others that had a match with a suffix one digit higher. And of course back in the project there is a Smith_02 that is different..
If I were to copy different files with the same name to other folders or our archive server one of those images could be easily discarded or copied over by the file with the duplicate name.
And lastly, when importing I tried to rename my files and add a generic caption, I imported the same images a few times, the first time I couldn't scroll down to see the caption box and metadata, the second time I could see the scroll and add the metadata below. The third time I couldn't scroll down. Very Wierd!
And lastly, is there any way to show just the adjustments or just the metadata boxes on the Adjustments & Filters layout? The boxes are so small already I'd like to be able to at least use the whole side of the screen for one box. I'd really like to be able to put them where I want them. The adjustment HUD works this way on a full screen but I want to get rid of the strip of thumbnails in the full screen and just have the HUD and the image, nothing else.
Any insights would be great.
Thanks,
CraigHello everyone,
<...>
I had issue yesterday, missing files, I was in the
rating/keywords panel scrolling through my images,
one was a bit soft so I deleted it using the command
delete combo. Somehow all of the images in the
project disappeared. They hadn't been moved to the
trash, I looked, and looked and looked, I couldn't
find them using a search, and it should have been
easy, they were the first images that had been
imported into Aperture.
I think they were in the trash - as far as I know search does not work within the trash itself.
Nope not in the trash, that's the first place I looked, I also found that deleting a project is the fastest way to export the masters. Just pull them out of the trash can
They should have been moved to the trash folder, inside an Aperture directory, and then from there inside of a folder with the name of the project the image was in.
Alternatley (and I'm not sure how this migh thave happened) they may have been marked as "rejected". All views have a default search >>criteria that starts with "unrated or higher" but rejected photos are lower than this and are not seen. By default there is a smart folder at the >>top of your library that shows Unrated pictures, you might check to see if they are there.
I'll double check the shortcut for rejects, this is the only plausible explanation, but it doesn't explain why the second import of images couldn't be found either.
So since I had copied the 70 files to my hardrive
first I re-imported them. Couldn't see those
either.
Deleted the project and re-imported again, worked
fine, and I couldn't reproduce the problem.
Well, I'm sorry to say I have no theories to offer there. Just glad it worked eventually!
When I went to export five images, (all the images
had been re-named with a sequential suffix, Smith_01,
Smith_02, Smith_03...), to my desktop so I could copy
to our server, I remembered that I needed to update a
caption on one image. (Could that caption box be any

export the individual image but exported all five
again. Instead of telling me there were duplicate
files on the desktop it increased the sequential
number of each duplicate file by 1. So now instead
of one file of Smith_01, Smith _08, Smith 33, etc,
<...>
Yes, Aperure will refuse to overwrite any file ever - and will always add those other numbers if it encounters a file with the same name as the one it is trying to generate!
I agree that this is a good thing, but there should be an alert of some kind if you have a duplicate. The finder certainly tells you if you are trying to copy a duplicate file to the same location. Adding an increment of one to the sequential suffix without an alert is very poor planning. On deadline trying to get files into our system I could have easily overlooked the duplicates and overwritten other files with the same name.
The only way to work around that is either to delete all files from the directory before you export from Aperture, or to export to an empty directory and copy them over yourself.
The work around is easily figured out, but like some other things I shouldn't have to work around it.
<...>
And lastly, is there any way to show just the
adjustments or just the metadata boxes on the
Adjustments & Filters layout? The boxes are so small
already I'd like to be able to at least use the whole
side of the screen for one box. I'd really like to
be able to put them where I want them. The
adjustment HUD works this way on a full screen but I
want to get rid of the strip of thumbnails in the
full screen and just have the HUD and the image,
nothing else.
Well, another option there would be to drag the divider between the metadata and the adjustments all the way up (as much as you can >>anyway, the histogram will still be visible).
That would be wonderful, but I'm on a 15 in ti book and there isn't enough space to do that. The divider show up but you can't move it. Ideally you should be able to just view the metadata or just the adjustments if you so choose. Binding them together is stupid, if I'm making adjustments, I don't care what is happening in the metadata screen and when I'm adding captions and changing metadata I don't need to see the adjustments screen. Give me a metadata template like the IPTC screen in Photomechanic that I can save and apply and put it on the screen where I want it.
Then to see adjustments just use the adjustment HUD - key "H" to bring up or dismiss. It will stay where you put it when you make it go >>away and come back and you can have it whereever you like on the screen unlike the inspector.
I'd love to do that but it can't be done on a 15 in laptop screen.
For maximum space value, you could arrange the Adjustments HUD to exactly overlay the space where the Inspector is - then you can press >>"I" to make the inspector come and go, and "H" for the Adjustments Hud all in the same space.
For maximum space on adjustments I'm using the full screen with the HUD. At least I can then move the HUD where I want it to be, not anchored on the right side.
In general look over the keyboard shortcuts as there are a lot of keys to make panels come up and go away quickly (one key, no modifiers) >>which really helps to maximize use of screen space.
I'm still learning them and I'm sure that will help, but the adjustments panel and the metadata panel have to be changed to make it more usable on a laptop in my opinion. Maybe it's fine on a large monitor, I wouldn't know as I can't load it on my G5 desktop without a hack. And so far I'd rather use Photomechanic for sorting and captioning it's much much faster for newspaper work. -
Can I sort alphabetically by, say, caption?
Caption is not one of the criteria listed on the pull-down menu. The only way I know to sort alphabetically is by file name.
Is there a way to create my own criteria? I want to be able to sort things alphabetically by the words in the caption fields.
Thanks,
DeanLightroom does not have this capability.

Sorting by Keyword -then lost sort menu and captions under some pics
I finally sorted all my photos by keyword- very handy. But when I opened up iPhoto again, some appeared without keywords, although I know I either had trashed some or keyworded them previously.
Then when I tried to open the "sort by" menu to re-do them with keywords, the menu no longer appears.
I shut down and rebooted then tried again- but same deal.
Any ideas for what might have happened?
thanksNanci
Might be a damaged database file.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that fails:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Album sort order PSE11 - is it by design ?
When experimenting with the sort order of albums in PSE11, I was surprised to see that in some albums, changing the sort order from 'oldest' to 'newest' did not produce any effect.
The reason of this probably lies in the menu /preferences/general :
If you have only pictures taken the same day, the above setting will still show 'oldest first' even you choose 'newest first' for album order.
I believe that the most used order is 'album order' and that the 'newest first' is very rare.
I can understand the option to browse 'oldest first within each day' when in 'newest first' in thumbnail view.
However, I wonder if that option makes sense to sort an album ?
Was it by design ?
If it were me...
I would not use that preference for an album,
and...
I would add the option to sort by filename and caption.Figured it out. I added "Various Artists" in the Album Artist field for every track and it then sorted them all together.

Text Entry Captions not created
Using Adobe Captivate 5.0 - Training mode is not creating the Text Captions for Text Entry Boxes, even though selected in the Training/Recording settings. Creates Text Entry box, but no Text Caption. Really want this to work when recording SAP simulations, but doesn't even seem to work when recording internet browser or MS Oulook either. Any ideas? Thanks.
Hello again
Perhaps it will help if I simply describe how Captivate usually works. There are several ways to record. There is "Full Motion" (FMR) where everything is recorded just like a movie. Not the best way of working bit is possible. In FMR no captions or anything of the sort is added during the recording process, but you may add them later if you like.
Then there is the "slide by slide" capture mode. Each click of the mouse generally results in a screen capture. But this mode of capturing has four variations.
* Demonstration
* Training Simulation
* Assessment Simulation
* Custom
Demonstration mode provides text captions for activity. Click this or that. Also, highlight boxes are added along with tracking mouse movement.
Both of the simulation modes will ignore text captions, mouse tracking and highlight boxes. Instead, these modes simply add Click Boxes and Text Entry Boxes to allow "simulation" or interacting with the Captivate. These objects offer "Feedback" captions to indicate Correct or Incorrect actions.
From what you have described, you want to enable "Custom" recording mode where you choose the mix of elements you get.
However, NONE of these modes will analyze what is happening and describe it to the user. Instead, they may or may not recognize what you are clicking on in order to create captions. You might see funky names like "Click the TechnicalNameForControl" control.
Does this help any?
Cheers... Rick

Text Caption Dialog window is black-help!
For some reason, the text caption dialog box window is black.
It did not used to be black, but somehow decided it wanted to be
black now. This makes is incredibly difficult to view the black
text as I attempt to edit it.
Anyone else have this problem? This is in the text caption
dialog box, in the area where you can type text. My area is black
and I cannot figure out how to change that. The text caption is
transparent and appears in captivate just fine, it's just a pain to
try to edit.
Thanks in advance,
EmilyHi Emily and welcome to the forum
I'm not sure I've ever sorted exactly what "sets" the
background color presented in the Caption editor for a transparent
caption. One thought that comes to mind is to either:
1. Choose a different text caption style, edit the text as
desired, then switch to the transparent style
or
2. Edit the text inside something like Windows Notepad, then
paste into the Caption editor
Hopefully one of these suggestions will work for you.

ITunes 11 - How do you Sort by Genre then Artist? Other General Customizations
Hello,
Maybe somebody else knows how to do this, if so please post it. I am really disappointed in iTunes ever since version 10 I think, where they majorly revamped the whole look for it. No, I am not one of those people who are opposed to change and are slow to adapt when changes are made to applications either. I just feel these new changes majorly suck.
So I am using version 11, the latest one. Apple has made it so uncustomizable that it is ridiculous. Correct me if I am wrong in saying this, that you can’t do any of this stuff anymore. When I open iTunes I like to be able to select Genres and then have the music within the Genre sorted by artist. I don’t see how you can do this anymore. Now when you click on Genre there is no longer an option to sort anything. Everything is sorted by CD Name and you aren’t allowed to sort it any other way. Seriously, who really knows the name of every CD they own, especially when you have several 100 CDs?
So if I want to view my music by artist I have to select Artists, which that lists all artists (regardless of genre). I hate this because then it is harder to find the exact artist you are looking for because the list is that much longer and you are scrolling through a ton more artists just to get to the one you are looking for. Yes, I already know there is a search library feature. I also like viewing the artist by Genre because it is easier to determine if the newly added CD was placed in the correct Genre. I know some people just add music and don’t care where it is placed or how it is organized, but I like to keep it all organized. I even have it organized on my computer by folders Genres, folders Artists, and then folders CDs.
This is the same for viewing your Playlists. You used to be able to select your playlists and then view a specific genre within that playlist. From there I could sort the playlist however I wanted, like by artists, and then CD. I have several playlists that have more than one genre in it. With this new version you can’t view your playlist by genre, you can only view all of the songs within the playlist.
I also liked in the old version how you could view the number of songs in each genre. Well, you can still do this once you click on the genre, but there isn’t an overview anymore. Like in the old version it would list all the genres and then in a caption underneath each genre it would show how many songs and different artists are in each genre. There was no need to go into each individual genre to view this information. You could also view the number of songs in each genre within each playlist as well. The playlist thing has been removed altogether. Now you can only view how many songs are in the playlist, regardless of genre.
The new version does have a few tiny benefits, like easily being able to see what playlist(s) a particular song is in by right clicking on a song and then selecting Show in Playlists. I however, don’t feel the tiny tweaks outweigh the view customizable benefits of previous versions. These new tweaks could have easily been added to the older versions without disabling the customizable view settings.Max OSX 10.6.8, iTunes 11.1
I had a similar problem: I wanted to synch my playlist to my iphone. I like to have my playlist sorted by genre. But under each genre, albums are not sorted by the track numbers. This is a problem, especially when I am listening to club mixes when the DJ smoothly transitions from 1 track sequentially to the next one. Under the properties of each audio file, the Track Numbers and Disc Numbers are already there.
My perfect solution was to turn On Sorting - Sort Album under View>Show View Options. Then, select all the songs in that album (Shift click, Cmd click, etc) , and Edit multiple item information (Cmd I). You will see Info-Video-Sorting-Options buttons. Click on Sorting. Then, under Sort Album, Enter the name of the album. Then OK.
You should now have the playlist sorted by Genre, then each album individually sorted by track numbers. On your playlist you should see, if you scroll right, the column added called "Sort Album".
Hope this helps. -
I am using the keyboard function keys to navigate a simulation using Click Boxes. For instance, F7 advances the simulation to the next screen, but if the learner selects F5, a failure caption displays. I have tried deleting and re-entering the click box, placing the click box at the top of the timeline levels, starting the click box at 0 and 0.5, making the click box visible and invisible, and make the click box the entire size of the screen.
Well, I guess that's that. Thanks for replying, I do appreciate it or else I would have been trying for days, wasting all sorts of time.
Until we meet again,

Closed captioning while video-playing is one of the coolest features of iOS devices. But for my iPhone (and an iPad user elsewhere from the Net), ever since I updated to iOS 5, the closed captioning icon no longer appear amongst the list of icons when you play a video WITH a closed caption capability.
I have played videos with closed captions before prior to iOS updates and been having no problems till I tried with iOS 5.
I tried turning the setting on/off in the Videos Settings, tried deleting and re-adding the video to the phone and also rebooted the phone.
Hoped someone could find a fix for this. The community can try it on iOS 5 and see if it is also an issue for them since I haven't seen but rarely people having this issue i'm having. My son has a similar problem since updating to the latest software on his iphone 4. He can make calls but the other person can't hear him. Facetime and Skype work fine - so it must be the lower microphone that is the problem. He's had it checked at the Apple store in Chiang Mai but they won't fix it - he has to get it back to the UK for service. It's 2 months over the warranty period but having checked around it seems this problem is widespread and Apple need to sort it fast!
I've updated mine and it's fine - but I'm gonna take out applecare before the warranty runs out as I'm not risking having a £495 phone that I can't use as a phone.
I was thinking of buying one for my wife this Xmas but no way whilst they are having so many problems.
COME ON APPLE - GET THIS FIXED WITH A NEW RELEASE ASAP! -
Currently the inset margins I set for caption text in the gallery widget reset to zero when previewed on different iPads. These galleries have multiple images and the captions are set to "individual caption per image" on the widget interaction panel. BUT the inset margins preview correctly if the gallery caption is set to "same caption for all images" in the gallery widget interaction panel. How does one fix this in iBooks Author? Would appreciate any advice or work arounds or suggestions.
Thanks! The arrows don't show up on the iPad, they are only to aid navigation within iBA. You can use boxes in the background to frame your galleries (as the background is off). I believe it's also possible to change the colour of the dots beneath the gallery too, although I forget how to do that right now.
About Apple's rigid UX – I agree that it can be frustrating. Apple intended iBA to be used by everyone, and the sort of design options and customisability we might want may confuse the less experienced user. Apple also wanted the UI for every book to be the same – from the point of view of the new user, once you've used one iBA ebook (or iBook, I'm not sure what Apple want us to call it), you can use them all. Otherwise end users would to get used to a slightly different UI on each book, which kind of works against the idea that ideally UI should be intuitive enough to be invisible. I can see the point in that. I have created a 'How to use' section in every iBA file I've made. It get's old quickly.
Oh, and (you probably know this, but…) you can choose your own custom icon for audio. It's limited, as it's only a placeholder image that allows you to play an audio file, there's no ability to pause the audio or stop it once you choose the view as thumbnail choice. Something I'd like to see changed.
Here's a link to Apple feedback page for iBA. Feel free to hammer it with your suggestions.
