Sort by filename?

Hi, I've just started using PSE and I'm in need of a little help. I'm trying to print off over 2000 photos in a certain order, but I've found that there doesn't seem to be any order by filename option? Putting the photo's into filename order is critical, going into folder location does not help and the prospect of sorting >2000 photos into albums doesn't seem like an enticing prospect.
Does the 'Organizer" honestly not have this simple feature? Won't be buying after trial ends if this is the case.

I have many picture files scanned & digitized from old slides, and in Windows 7, they show up as depicted in the print screen in Details View. If you right click, it brings up a context menu from which you can rename. This function may be restricted as to numbers that one can rename.

  • N95 and image gallery sorting by filename, not by ...

    Hello!
In N95, the default sorting of images (and photos) is by date-time. This is stupid and useless, because:
    - I edit some of my taken photos, so they have different datetime stamps than originals
    - I always manualy define the order of photos by putting numbered prefixes in filenames.
The gallery on N95 should be able to sort by filename. I cannot find a "sort by" option. Is there any?
Or did Nokia forget to add such an important option?
    Thanks,
    Smargroth

So it seems that the only solution is to "touch" files (modify timestamp); in groups, so I can simulate "albums" (all files in one group get the same timestamp). Then the files are sorted by filename.
But this is possible only using microSD card, connected through "Data transfer mode" to PC.
I don't know who programmed this gallery application, but it is really some of the worst programs which I saw. Didn't they ask any user what we want? Yesterday I tried to copy a lot of my journey photos (around 4000) to memory card and what then? Each time when I opened the gallery, photos was processed around 2 minutes before displaying!!! I hate this application. Why does it need to count the photos? And, if it really needs the total number of photos, it can store the number or make some database, which is refreshed on demand, like music list.
And, I don't find any option, to hide some folders from displaying. For example, I have some photos for contacts, and I don't want them to be displayed in gallery. Is this possible?
Because, in my opinion, this gallery application is so bad and useless, I wonder, if there is some (3rd party) gallery application, which works like ACDSee or Irfan or any other normal program?
    Thanks,

  • IOS5 Has Restored Photo Sorting by Filename?

In my testing (both Jpeg and Png formats), it 'appears' that Apple has restored sorting images by filename in iOS5.  If true, that means that the nightmare of altering EXIF dates to achieve user controlled sort sequencing for images on iPhone and iPad is finally over and done with.  I have more testing to do, but based on what I've seen so far.......Bravo Apple!!!!!
There is one image sorting bug I have found in iOS5. If new images are moved into a folder in groups greater than about 200 images, the indexing goes crazy and the sort sequence appears random or somehow interleaved. I have not yet found the exact failure point but moving 125 images works okay, but moving 224 images fails.
Finally, why no image sorting options Apple?  Although Pro photographers control image sorting by filename (compliant with DAM standards), a lot of folks in this Forum seem to like date sequencing. Since virtually all photo software offers sorting options, I think iOSx should too.

Confirmed.  The sort order for photos has been restored to standard alphanumeric filename sequencing.  The iOS4 requirement that EXIF dates be altered to control the sort order of photos has finally been eliminated.

  • Windows User: Frist time trying to use itunes. Unable to sort by filename.

I'm having a lot of issues getting used to using I tunes. The ipod touch is my first apple product. I've always used windows devices until now. The main issue i'm having is itunes doesn't have an option to sort by filename. So when i'm adding all my audio books to itunes the don't play in the correct order.
For example the book i just got was on 12 cd's each cd has around 24 tracks. With my windows device i drag and drop them from my computer and browse to the folder on the device and i'm playing the audio book.
This ipod is playing track one from each disk and then track 2 from each disk.
Is there a fix for this? Its the most annoying issue i've ever ran into. I've downloaded a program that will rename all the files at the same time. So I renamed this files 1 - 284 but in itunes its still showing the same tracks names.
This is really getting me frustrated because the only way i can see to fix it is to change the track name of each file.
I'm surprised these ipods have been out this long and are still having issues like this. It makes me think its a bug that has already been looked into and will not be fixed. if thats the case is there a workaround?
Anyway I can select all the files and make them into apply audio books? Not really show out to fix this.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Sorting By FileName

    The endless dilemma.
If I have 20 images named 1.jpg, 2.jpg up to 20.jpg and I import them into Lightroom and sort by filename, it sorts them alphanumerically:
    1.jpg
    11.jpg
    12.jpg...
    19.jpg
    2.jpg
    21.jpg...
Without having to add leading zeros to my filenames, can Lightroom sort these numerically as my finder does? Is there a setting I'm missing?

I have a similar problem. My experience suggests it is not an issue with padded zeros. The issue for me is that in using an XP platform, Lightroom uses what is called "intuitive filename sorting." This was a change in the way XP sorted.
"In previous versions of Windows, filenames are sorted text-wise, character by character. File1.txt, File10.txt, and File100.txt are all placed before File2.txt, because the digit 1 comes before the digit 2. Most users have grown accustomed to zero-padding sequential numbers in filenamesFile010.txt correctly comes after File002.txt. Under Windows XP, though, each block of consecutive digits is treated as a number and sorted as such. Even without zero-padding, File10.txt comes after File2.txt."
There is an option in Windows XP to change back to the older -- and preferred -- style of sorting using either a REGEDIT function or simply disabling "intuitive sorting" in TWEAK UI.
Now comes my question for Adobe and users of LR. "How do I change my preferences in LR1.1 so that Lightroom honors the election in XP to sort without using intuitive filename sorting?"
Right now I get the following:
    0024-0013.jpg
    0024-14-01.jpg
    0024-0014.jpg
    and I need to have:
    0024-0013.jpg
    0024-0014.jpg
    0024-14-01.jpg
I can create both sorts in Windows Explorer by enabling or disabling "intuitive filename sorting." I need to have LR honor my sorting election made in Windows.
    Thanks.

  • Can albums be sorted by filename (not date)?

I have a set of portfolios, stored on a microSD card, that I would like to sort and display on the tablet by filename -- but the default is by file (creation) date and I can't find any Settings options to change that. Is there a way to do this on the tablet?

you will need a different gallery/album app from the play store

  • Sort the filenames to be loaded in data portal by date

    Hi,
Filenames listed in Diadem File browser are sorted alphabetically.
I would like to script how to load files in search results sorted by date of creation not by name.

    Hi Andre Rako,
You mentioned two different ways of loading data into DIAdem (File Browser, Search Results).  Which do you mean?  There's no way to affect the ordering of the files in the File Browser, because that simply shows the same order as the files are in on disk-- the same order you see when you look with Windows Explorer.
The Search Results is a different story, however.  After running any query, you can order to resulting Search Results list by clicking on the "up/down" icon at the top right of any column.  In your case you'll want to display the datetime as a property column in the Search Results and then click on the "up/down" (enumeration) icon at the top of that column.
If you have DIAdem 2010 or later, you can also include the ordering of the Search Results as part of the query.  There is now the "up/down" icon to the left of the condition in the Condition Table (just to the right of the C1, C2, text).  You can click on this icon to set the ordering to be ascending, descending, or turned off.

  • Unable to sort by filename in PSE11 Organizer

I notice that in PSE11 Organiser, it is not possible to sort images by "filename".  As this is such a fundamental feature in any file manager, I assume that this must be an oversight and not intentional.  Does Adobe have any plans to issue an update to address this problem in the very near future?
    Thanks
(Otherwise, very happy with PSE 11.)

As a matter of fact, alphabetical sort is never useful if you generally ignore the folder view and use the normal thumbnail view and tags and categories. If you don't rename your files (like most users), alphabetical and date order are the same. I can imagine why that has not been considered important by Adobe when they changed the old buggy folder view.
What they have most probably overlooked is that many users  rely on folder view and that some rename all their pictures, especially those scanning many pictures.
So there has been already a number of posts about that problem and Adobe must be now aware of the problem.
I have already reported that and suggested that they create an option for alphabetical sort in albums, for captions as well as filename. That does not seem a big deal to implement for the next version. I believe that such a sort in the normal folder view (not in albums) would be trickier to implement without risking new bugs.

  • In Photoshop Express, cannot sort images in album by filename in thumbnail view (for slideshow)l.

In Photoshop Express, I want images to appear sorted by filename.  In the "view as a table" it sorts fine.  When I revert to the thumbnail view, the arrangement is random.  The dropdown "show" list does not offer an option for showing by filename.  If I select the"custom" option, it means I would need to sort 300 images by filename MANUALLY (!!!), a job that a computer does in milliseconds.  Anyone with a solution?  Thanks.

fwiw, with my images in the 'Folder Location' view the photos are in order by their Windows filename. That is the same order as the hardcopy album the photos came from. So I then created a PSE Album. I selected all my photos and moved them into that album. The order of the pictures was retained in the Album. That worked out great. I wanted my PSE images to be in the same order. I thought I would do it with tags. But creating an album seems to work just fine.

  • How to sort photos in an album by filename?

I have imported 273 photos into an album in Photoshop Elements Organizer.  They originally came from 2 different digital cameras, so the date stamp on them is different.  All the photos were combined and sorted by filename before they were imported.  I want to keep them in this order for creating a DVD.  The Media Browser Arrangement indicates you can sort by date (oldest or newest) or Album.  I have searched the Help topics until my eyes are ready to pop out of my head and have spoken with support (for 45 minutes) until we got disconnected.  Help!!!

This approach has worked in many versions of Photoshop Elements for making an Album based on file name within a single Windows folder - but I can't say for sure about version 8.
Since you say they were combined and sorted by filename, I am guessing that you have all of those photos in a single Windows folder.
So try switching to the Folder Location view of the thumbnails, navigate to that Windows folder within the PSE Organizer left side of the screen foldeer structure and verify that the photos are displaying in name sequence within that folder.
Using the Folder Location view (where the photos are displaying in name sequence), select those photos and add them to a newly created PSE Album from their display under the Folder Location view.
Another consideration -looking ahead to your actions
You mention burning to a DVD - if this will be a slideshow burned to a standard definition video DVD for TV playback, I wonder what resolution those photos are? For example, were they from a 5 megapixel camera or a 12 megapixel camera ?
The dilemma is that the resolution of your photo files could be too high for processing 273 photos to make the slide show. If you will be burning a standard definition video DVD from Premiere Elements, there is a recommendation to have the photo files used for the slide show be a resolution of approximately 1000x750 pixels (or equivalent adjustment if you will do widescreen).   In a way this is the opposite of printing where if the resolution is too low, the print quality will be poor. For slideshows written to video DVD, too high a resolution stresses the process of making the video and can either reduce quality of image in the final video or cause crashes.
If you will be burning to a Bluray DVD or displaying on a computer monitor , then the resolution should be somewhat higher - but a 12 MP camera will still give too large a resolution.  The Process Muliple Files function in the PSE Editor or the File > Export new file in the Organizer provide methods to take your entire folder of photo files and create "downsized" resolution files that are written to a different folder so that your current files are untouched.

  • How do I sort photos by filename. I have some 5000 photos involved in different albums

I have many albums each that need sorting by filename. Any advice?

Is this with iPhoto? Or on an iPad? If iPhoto, have you looked at the View Menu -> Sort Photos options?

  • PS11-Organizer:How to sort images by filename...

Surely this is possible, but I've yet to figure out a way to do this.
    Can it be done?
It would make it much easier to review/scan your library contents.

Sort by Filename functionality is introduced in Organizer12. In Organizer11 this feature is not avaialbe. A cumbersom workaround in Organizer11 is mentioned on this post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5233687#5233687

  • Album sort order PSE11 - is it by design ?

When experimenting with the sort order of albums in PSE11, I was surprised to see that in some albums, changing the sort order from 'oldest' to 'newest' did not produce any effect.
The reason of this probably lies in the menu /preferences/general :
If you have only pictures taken the same day, the above setting will still show 'oldest first' even you choose 'newest first' for album order.
I believe that the most used order is 'album order' and that the 'newest first' is very rare.
I can understand the option to browse 'oldest first within each day' when in 'newest first' in thumbnail view.
However, I wonder if that option makes sense to sort an album ?
    Was it by design ?
    If it were me...
I would not use that preference for an album,
    and...
I would add the option to sort by filename and caption.

Figured it out. I added "Various Artists" in the Album Artist field for every track and it then sorted them all together.

  • How do I get Iphoto to preserve the sort order when I transfer an album?

Here's my problem. I carefully sorted my album of 230 photos manually. Each photo was then numbered from 1 to 230.   Then I used IPhoto Library Manager to transfer this album someplace else -- to my desktop, to a thumb drive, to Dropbox---   In every case, when I did that, the photos themselves transfered just fine,  but the sort order I had so carefully constructed has fallen apart and cannot by retrieved. Even  when I  close and then reopen an Album I have transferred to my Desktop, it loses its sort order.  This is driving my crazy  because I need to transfer this album so that it preserves the slideshow I have designed for it. A slideshow, of course, demands preserving the order of the slides.
In short, how can I preserve the sort order of an album when I transfer it out of one library to another?

If you're transferring to another library, why are you exporting to the Finder (which is what Desktop, thumbdrive and DropBox are). This doesn’t understand manual sorting from iPhoto.
Here's one (of several) way(s) to do what you want:
Make an Album of the photos, then drag the pics into your preferred order.
Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the FInder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.
