Sort by metadata in vista explorer?

Has anyone figured out how to get the Vista OS (the File Explorer) to sort Adobe PDFs by metadata (properties)? For instance, I have about 100 PDFs of correspondence, which is part of a research project. I've entered the date of each letter into the "Title" field, the author of each letter into the "Author" field, and the subject of each letter into the "Subject" field. My hope is that I could easily access files from the explorer, ie., by sorting them into the chronological order in which they were sent, or sorting them by the author of the letter, etc. But it seems impossible--Vista seems not to recognize the XMP metadata.
I've also tried using Bridge to do this, but it is not possible to actually sort the documents using Filter (the categories one can sort by are limited). I don't want to do "searches" or pull the files into order manually--too time consuming, I think.
Any ideas out there? I've been churning this over for days now.

Thumbnails Missing in Vista Explorer Large & Extra Large View

I've noticed that thumbnail images are missing in the Vista explorer (View > Large/Extra Large Icon). I used to see a preview image in the explorer window without having to launch Acrobat Reader version 7.xxxx. I never use the preview pane, it was never necessary when the thumbnails provided a quick look inside the PDF document.
However, after installing version 8.1.1, these thumbnail images have disappeared and are now replaced by the generic Acrobat icon which came with the latest version. What's with that??? Do we HAVE TO upgrade from the free reader version to the pay version to get these previews?
This is not a Vista problem! This happened just after installing Reader 8. Images such as bitmaps, Photoshop psd files, png's, video mpg's, mpeg's and wmv's, for example, all display thumbnail images of the content in a Vista explorer folder window. But the PDF files only show the generic icon.

Can I sort on metadata?

I just posted a message asking about filtering on metadata, but I didn't want to confuse that thread with this second question:
Can I sort on metadata? For example, can I sort on "Date Time Original"?
I know I can sort on "Date Created," but that's not the same thing as the metadata's "Date Time Original" field. E.g., I have jpg files where the "Date Time Original" is in 1990 but the Date Created is in 2012. Sorting on Date Created doesn't order the files chronologically based on when the photo was taken.

To me it seems Date Time Original in Exif data from camera equals the Date Created from IPTC. This makes also some sense because exif is created using the Camera software and when you have set the date and time correctly this reflects the moment the file was created.
When using images that don't have its origin in a camera able to provide exif (analog camera or scanner etc.) you have to provide this data yourself and fill in the right places. I don't know if you were able to add this in the filed Date Time Created in an earlier version of PS file info using CS6 I can't find an editable field in the file info that is called 'Data Time Original', only date created is available.
Hence Bridge (although the options for filter and sort could be somewhat expanded) will not likely provide this option in future versions but you can always put a Feature Request for this, but if only 1 or a few people have the need for this it is not very likely to get realized I'm afraid.
So your only chance might be a script that reads your metadata and for example replaces the 'date created' data with the 'Date Time Original' data if this is in the metadata written.
You could try the dedicated Adobe Bridge Scripting Forum for this, their are some very helpful people in there:

And make sure backing up the files before trying to alter them, if it screws things up you always have the originals to refer to.
Also a small tip that won't help you now but can do in the future. Think of a proper naming convention of your files and stick to it. Personal I rename all my files with first "YYYYMMDD" and then a short subject description followed by a sequence number for series of that same subject.
This will place your files always in a natural sort order for date. And when scanning pre digital files create a template for the metadata in Bridge with your common copyright info and use the IPTC core fields to immediately fill in the important fields like description, keywords, place and date created. You can select multiple files and use this template to ad the info in one go.

Equium A100-338: Vista explorer not working properly

I bought a new a100-338 with windows vista home premium installed on it.
Windows explorer does not seem to work properly.
It get messed up and i have to restart windows explorer. Can some one please help me solve this problem.

Sorry but your postings does nor say anything precise what happen exactly when you start Vista explorer and how should we know what you mean exactly.
By the way: does this issue occur since first day of notebook usage? Maybe you have installed something that has negative influence to it.

Lost Sort Album Metadata

Hello Everyone,
I've been applying Sort Album metadata to songs within iTunes. Unfortunately, when I attempt to change the song quality to a lower version using the "Create MP3 Version" function, this Sort Album metadata is not written to the new version of the file. Instead, it is simply written within the iTunes Library database. As a result, when the newer smaller version of the files are transferred to another computer - the Sort Album metadata is lost. Is there a way to force the writing of this data contained in the iTunes Library to each file?

Thanks for your suggestions. The 'Show Camera Info' is selected. I tried your other suggestion, exporting a master. I then imported it with a new name back into Aperture. The new copy has all it's metadata intact so the data is there in the file it is just not displayed.
Even worse now, the affected pictures no longer display correctly, they are just a dull mess, presumably as there is no longer any RAW decoder applied.
I have already repaired then rebuilt the library with no improvement, in fact it is now worse as the picture itself is no longer displayed correctly after the rebuild.
Unless anyone has some ideas I think I can only export all my masters, then re-import them or maybe restore from a vault (losing my recent adjustments).

Is a 100% Adobe's failure. The bug started with CS3 and is alive and well with version CS4 too. In this Windows forum, we have blamed Microsoft, but some Mac users think Apples is the problem:

The reality is that Adobe cannot keep up with new technology, or they just do not care. As suggested previously, you need a plug-in or a second program just to preview a document. Now that is comedy!

Thumbnail views in Vista Explorer STILL MISSING!

This is the most aggrevating topic. I've never experienced such an seemingly unsolveable computer problem. I have CS4 (Acrobat 9 Pro), Vista 64 bit PC. I have been trying to get a solution for months as to how to get the preview thumbnail to appear in explorer instead of the Adobe logo.Can someone please provide a solution that works? 1) Yes. Downloading Acrobat Reader DC via get.adobe.com/Reader will not give the user an option to change install path of Reader.
If you wish to install Reader on an install path of your choice, please download it from: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution
2) Acrobat Reader DC will take the pdf ownership if installed via get.adobe.com/Reader. You will have a choice to not make Acrobat Reader DC as default pdf viewer while installing from: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution
3) Yes, thumbnail preview will not work with DC. However you could preview the file in the right preview pane in the explorer window.

Sorting Pictures/Videos in File Explorer causes Explorer to relaunch.

I have a folder with all my pictures and videos in it, and when I try to sort it by date(or tags, however I don't wish to), explorer crashes and relaunches, leaving the folder unsorted. I have the same folder on my boot drive, and also an external drive,
but in both occasions explorer crashes. I have also tried to disable thumbnails, and changing the view to small icons/detail etc but I still have explorer crashing.

Viewing thumbnails of Illustrator files in Vista Explorer

At work I run Adobe Illustrator CS on Windows XP pro. When I set Windows
Explorer to Thumbnail view I get a thumbnail view of illustrator files.
On my laptop I am running Illustrator CS3 on Windows Vista. I can't figure
out how to get thumbnail views of illustrator files in Windows Explorer on
this system. Is there a way?

As I recall, AI 11 (CS) was the last version to provide thumbnail views in Explorer. A nasty conflict with Explorer, however, made it necessary for Adobe to remove the feature.
If you find yourself facing oddball problems in AI 11, such as difficulty saving or deleting files, you would be told by tech support to delete or rename the file aiicon.dll. Unfortunately, that also nukes thumbnail views in Explorer.
The recommended procedure for previewing AI files is to use Adobe Bridge instead of Explorer.

Any workaround for viewing thumbnails in Vista/explorer?

Is there any current workound to view psd file thumnails in vista. Specifically explorer. I do use bridge, however sometimes I am already in explorer and thubnails would be great.

Sorting and metadata

I noticed LR for some reason messed up the capture date, pics in my grid ended up showing randomly instead of in a time sequence. I had to 'Read metadata from file again to correct the capture date, but then I loose the edits and I had to redo the pic again. It's pretty annoying. Does anyone know what caused the problem and/or how to fix it?

Can't explain why the sequence of the pics were different one day from the next. This happens after I imported them to the catalog. Photos of day 1 of my trip should be at the beginning and day 10 should be at the end. But some day 10 pics (as well as other days) ended up at the begining of the sequence, randomly. So strange.
By the way, can anyone tell me how can I control the sorting order of my photos? By name, by date modified, by date taken, ascending, descending, etc.?

Mac OS Leopard Safari Working/Vista Explorer Not Working

I have an imac, and recently installed windows. Everything works fine except the internet. That was one of the main reasons i installed windows was the internet explorer. There are several things that i cannot do on Safari. I have Wireless Internet. When I try to connect, it just searches for the webpage, and then never finds it! Does anyone know why the internet doesn't work?

Oh by the way Safari still works fine, it's just the Internet Explorer on Vista that is having problems.

Unknown error 13109 & Vista Explorer Crashes

Problem 1: I'm having major problems with my iPhone 3Gs as everytime I plug it in to my PC (Vista) Windows explorer crashes. It happens just as iTunes picks up my iPhone.
Problem 2: I'm also getting 'An unknow error has occurred (13019).' Steps to try to resolve this was to uncheck all syncs, and then sync. Then gradually check the boxes to sync stuff as I go along. But I'm still getting this error message.
To be honest I'm seriously considering formatting my hardrive again, which by the way I did a few weeks ago which seems to have caused all these errors...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless your Vista machine is otherwise misbehaving (BSOD) I would format the HDD only as a last resort.
