Sort by name view in PSE 9 Mac Organizer?

Is there an option or workaround for the Organizer to sort and display by the file name in the Organizer included in Photoshop Elements for Mac version 9? I would appreciate any tips!

Thanks for voicing your displeasure with Adobe over Mac (and I assume Windows) version 9 organizer not being able to sort by file name.  I agree that it is an unacceptable omission, especially since almost every editor and organizer has this feature including Adobe's Bridge that came with PhotoShop Elements 6 for Mac.
I'm still trying to find the "make a suggestion" form to voice the same displeasure. Windows, and to a lesser extent the Mac OS, has a serious issue in my opinion in that almost any editing, copying, etc. changes at least the file modification date if not the creation date. The EXIF date might stay the same but I've not yet found how to copy that to the creation date in edited PSE9 files. Of course, the movies don't have an EXIF code to use.
My solution to this shortcoming is to first do a simple import from the camera into a computer folder and then immediately rename the photos and videos to a file name that includes the date and time from the creation date.  The format I use is --YYMMDD HHMM ### Text-- where the time is 24 hour clock, the ### is the last three digits of the file name the camera created (useful for matching with the original camera file and also differentiates rapid snap photos with the same creation time), and short event text tacked on the end (examples: 101125 1548 642 Oak Ridge.mov & 101125 2035 656 Oak Ridge.jpg). I can now sort the photos and video together in preferred true chronological order regardless of how much the file dates change due to editing. I typically want to combine items from multiple cameras that may have been modified by different editors on different dates into a single slideshow or movie that is sorted automatically by file name into chronological order (but nice to have manual reordering override on selected items when desired). I use and recommend "A Better Finder Rename 8" software to rename the files quickly after import. This software has simple multi-step actions that can be set up once to do the renaming.
Of course all this scheming is null and void if you CAN'T SORT BY FILE NAME!!
I think my goals are simple and typical, but my decades long search for photo and video editors that do what I want has not ended yet. I was hoping that PSE9/PRE9 might be that solution but maybe not if they won't let me sort by file name. The program that comes the closest is Picasa but it has too many bugs and limitations to be the final solution.
Mac's iPhoto/iMovie are nice and I've used them extensively but their integration of photos and video requires too many manual steps.
So what is it I want? I'm shooting intermixed photos and video mostly on cameras that have HD video capability. I want to import them, do some simple editing, add some titles or captions and occasionally voice annotations, and throw in a little background music at low levels (need good ducking for the video). I'd like to do this all in one editor (or organizer?) that can output (keeping them in chronological order by file name) to movies, DVDs, web posting, prints, and export edited photos for archive.  PIcasa can do this and despite its current issues and limitations should be a model of photo/video/production integration for all editors in my opinion.
What I don't want--or need--is the fancy organizers that seem to be the rage these days. There may be a few people that must be able to instantly find and pull up uncle Charlie with a toothache from 30 years ago.  I am not that person. I don't want to build and maintain a cross-indexed library of every video and photo I ever took. I don't need to apply automatic face recognition to every photo I ever took just because I can. For me, the organizer and editors are temporary holding places until I can generate the output products (edited movies, slideshows, edited photos, web posting, prints).  Once these products are created and archived to off-line storage, the photos and videos will be deleted from the computer and the organizer database. I rarely have time or inclination to use old archived material. My off-line archives are stored as simple folders by year with subfolders by date with a short subject in the folder and file name. Modern photo browsers allow me to quickly enough find what I want with that stored information to meet my occasional needs.

  • PSE 9 (Mac) Organizer - Category Tag shows no pictures

I have tagged all my photos and have my heirarchy set.  If I click on an upper level tag, the organizer automatically "clicks" all the subordinate tags, and shows me all the pictures for those tags.
However, if I click a category tag, The organizer automatically "clicks" the subordinate tags as above, but tells me there are no matching photographs.
Shouldn't I see all the photos in that category?

    Thanks,
I am in Thumbnail view, and I checked all of the items in the link you provided.  I looked closer, and found that it is only the People category that has problems.  I moved some of the sub-categories to another temp holding category, and found that the problem disappeared when some combinations of sub-categories were moved.  But when all of the subcategories were moved to the new holding category, then the new one failed as well.  So there must be something about the specific set of circumstances in my library that is causing this to occur.  I think I'll just forget it for now and see if the problem still exists in the next release.

It's the default sort order. You can choose chronological order( ascending or descending) or by Import batch or by filename. Contrary to older versions, those sort orders are available not only in thumbnail view, but also in Folders view and albums. In albums you can sort as you like 'custom order'. No difference in Mac or Win.

  • UNDO SORT BY NAME IN TOOLBAR

I SORTED BY NAME AND CAN NOT UNDO, JUST UPGRADED YESTERDAY, HAVE 5.0 FOR MAC OS X
    IT IS A MESS NOW
I TRIED RESTORING TO DEFAULT-BUT THAT MADE IT WORSE, I DO NOT WANT FOLDER ICONS

''Remove folder and bookmark icons from Bookmark Toolbar, Sorting Bookmarks, and possibly undoing sort by name:''
I can't think of a logical order within folders that works better than alphabetical in most cases -- one exception is a bookmarks folder containing bookmarks to create a set of app-tabs in a specific order controlled by prefixing by numbers or many bookmark separators. The bookmarks toolbar is a possible exception but I have all of my bookmarks automatically sorted. I make use of bookmark separators to group bookmarks so that bookmarks are sorted within each group but not moved to another group. Here is a picture of my Bookmark Toolbar
    :http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/icons/fx5_before_after.png
Looks something like: [boldface are Folders (blue) vs. Bookmarks (red)]
    :'''*5.0* _ Blogs Chaos SUMO''' | # + < > G GV H L Pz Sp Wi |''' K S '''sw| nBk Sc '''BF BugsBML'''| ...
:names are kept very short to save space on the toolbar 1-3 chars for most of them. The bookmarks there are used like toolbar buttons and they are all bookmarklets (contain JavaScript).
The '''"K" folder''' on my bookmarks toolbar contains mostly [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/kws.htm keyword shortcuts] most of which are bookmarklets, along with references to support and mozillazine articles. So I don't really need many bookmarks showing on the toolbar.
The '''folder and bookmark favicons are removed by a style''' managed by the Stylish extension:

    * '''Bookmarks Toolbar Fx4 Blue/Folders, Red/Bookmarks''' - Themes and Skins for Browser<br>http://userstyles.org/styles/46947/
The '''Sorting of bookmarks is by an extension''', you can exclude any of the three major folders like the Bookmarks Toolbar. Don't use the automatic sort though, switch it to manual. Sorting takes about 3-5 seconds for all of my bookmarks.
    * '''SortPlaces''' :: Add-ons for Firefox<br>https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/sortplaces/
Another place that I use '''bookmark separators''' is at the end of huge folders, so that I can review naming, content and keyword assigned before allowing into the main portion of a folder.
You might be able to see your '''original bookmark order''' by going to the Library list ("Ctrl+Shift+B") and changing the order there on the "Views" menu > Sort > to "Unsorted". ("''Command''+Shift+B" on a Mac for the Library List)

  • Sorting by name doesn't work

I recently upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion, and cannot seem to get the finder to sort my files and folders alphabetically (by name).
I have tried all of the following methods:
clicked the gear in the finder -> arrange by -> name
clicked the icon with the boxes and the lines above them -> name
clicked view -> arrange by -> name
None of these methods work.  The files and folders are still in a seemingly random order (e.g. mockups, AWS, Business, Corporate, Collaboration, Technology).
Other sorting methods work (kind, application, date modified, etc.) as expected.  It is sorting by name that doesn't work (sorting by name, and sorting by none do not affect the order of the files and folders).
Any advice on how to make this work would be appreciated.  It was working fine for me with snow leopard before I upgraded.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I tried finding the preference file (as this was recommended in another post as well), but am having trouble.  It is not under: library->preference->com.apple.finder.plist and does not show up when I do a search (making sure I search 'this mac').
I should also mention that I am using the column view.
    Thanks!

  • Finder unable to sort file name in Column mode

    Hi Guys,
About 2 weeks ago suddenly Finder are unable to sort files in alphabetical order in Column mode.
About the same time when my external HDD died (don't know whether this has any effect).
Sorting by name works fine in icon only mode, but whenever I switch to Column mode its completely disorganized.
And when I tried in coverflow mode its alphabetical but in inverted mode (Z to A).
I tried verifying disk permission and repairing it to no effect.
Any clues on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • ITunes 11: In the store, I can no longer sort by name/artist/album

I can no longer sort by name or artist or album when I'm in the store with iTunes 11.  Yes, I discovered the View Options in the Menu Bar. By when I select it nothing opens. Same for Command-J. It doesn't do anything either. I've tried hitting Command-J repeatedly, but nothing.
The fact is, it seems utterly stupid to have this work differently than when you're in your library---by simply hitting name/artist or album in the bar at the top of the list. Having to sort lists in the Store via a completely different method than the lists in one's library is totally counter-intuitive.
But back to my problem:  The View Options won't open for me. Anybody know how to fix this?
I've got a lot of music I wish to buy, but I need different methods of sorting, otherwise it'll be a nightmare trying to keep track of things.
    Thanks,
    Doug

I have the same exact problem.  I am using a Windows computer running Windows 7.  I was able to see them prior to the installation of 10.4.  I have this problem on 2 computers and have a hard time believing that no one else is having this problem

  • Elements 11 Sort By Name does not always sort by name

If I choose Sort By: Name, MOST of the images are sorted properly by filename, but some are not.
All my files are named YYYYMMDD####, but yet (for instance) in this view right now I have three files that start with 20150317 that are sorting BEFORE pictures with filenames 20150101...  Then everything goes sequentially as expected, right through the place in the sequence where these pictures SHOULD be.
At the end of the sort I have similar problems.  If the sequence ends with (say) 20140414...., then there will also be pictures with filenames like 20150317 AFTER that.
This makes no sense.  The system simply cannot be actually sorting by filename and having this result.  It's got to be using some metadata of some sort, not filename.
I've looked at the advanced properties/metadata and there does not appear to be any difference between files that properly sort and those that show up out of sequence.
    What's the deal?

Just to update this in case someone else is having a similar problem.
    First, I mis-spoke.  I'm on 12, not 11.
With that, I do have all the right menu choices to "sort by name", however when I did that, it did not correct the sort order.  A very small fraction of what I had in the catalog (perhaps 1%) persisted in sorting by some unknown criteria.  Viewing the meta data or properties of the files did not show any differences between the files that were sorting "out of sequence" and those that were.
At one point, thinking something had corrupted the catalog (I have a lot of files, who knows..) I "repaired" and then "optimized" the catalog.  No change.
Ultimately what I did was (just to "try something") was delete the catalog entry for those files (not the files themselves) and then re-scan that folder.  Elements Organizer "found" the files again and imported them into the catalog.  After that, they now show up properly, sorted by filename, in the thumbnail view (by folder).
So.. whatever it was, it was solved in this way.  We'll see if it now recurs.
    Thanks!

  • Sorting doesn't seem to sort by name - why?

Having successfully migrated from Aperture to Photos I was surprised to find that the sorting function is minimal and doesn't appear to work.  With 'Keep sorted by date' unselected my pictures do not sort by name.  The only thing I seem to be able to sort by name is the Album in which I keep my folders of pictures within Photos.
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks!

When you changed the folder setting for iTunes, you may have noticed at the top of the dialogue box that is was changing the settings for that folder only. For instance, I did my little test on a drive named "Video". When I called up the View Options, the box specifically said Video at the top. So I knew the change was only going to affect that folder.
There is a box at the bottom to Use as Defaults, but it still only affects that folder. I can't see a way to make the option global, which means you have to mark folders one at a time to calculate the subfolder sizes. Probably intentional as it can really slow down the Finder's response time when it has to sit there and tally up the contents of every folder you open, or reopen.

  • Dynamic sorting in pivot view

    Hello
Can someone please point me to the OBIEE Oracle documentation where I can find "How to make dynamic sorting work in a pivot table view".
I have many pivot views on a dashboard. Clicking on the measure columns "Sort Ascending" and "Sort Descending" did not use to sort the columns in 10g. But I have found on this link
    https://forums.oracle.com/message/9321054#9321054
that dynamic sorting can be now done in pivot views. But I am unable to find Oracle documentation on it that tells me how.
We have upgraded to 11.1.1.7 but still I am unable to do sorting in pivot views on dashboards

    Devendra,
you cannot have both status and status icon in the same column. so create a new column and then populate it according to the status.
here is the sample code from the layout section of document_todo.htm
    <!--      Column: Appraisal Name                   -->

                  status_icon = cl_bsp_mimes=>sap_icon( id = 'ICON_WS_PLANE' ).

  • Faster Full-Name Viewing in List View - does not always work

A little while ago I discovered the Tip (from the Apple Pro tips page) on how one can view the entire file name when in List View and the name is too long to view without widening the column.
One can just roll the mouse over it and wait. But, one can also use the Option key to bring up the full title right away.
Sometimes, I have found though that NEITHER method works. I hover my mouse pointer. Nada. I hold the Option Key and roll over file names. Nada. It seems likely that it is a software issue, some conflict, but I have no clue at to what, yet.
Just before I started writing this, I could not get the Faster Name Viewing or, the roll-over and wait method to work. I had been thinking it took a restart to revive the function. But, then I went and tried File Name Viewing, again and it worked as if there never had been an issue. I had done nothing between it not working and working again except start writing this post.
Anyone have any thoughts or info?

    Fixed.
A and B sort of had a different set of controllers.
I did not realize that the using the sort requires an explicit call to CALL_VIEW to show the page again. I thought it was all automated.
    That was the problem.

  • Viewing TIF files in Mac OS X v4

    Hello:
I have been sent some files in TIF format but I cannot find a way to view these files in Mac OS X (10.4). I have confirmed that the files are not corrupted, since I can transfer them to a Windows PC and view them there, but OS X does not appear to have a file viewer that can read them.
Can anyone advise what program can be used for this purpose?
    Thanks.
    Michael Trotz

Since you can open the TIFFs on a PC, then there must be something wrong with Preview on your Mac. You can use Pacifist to extract the Preview application from your original OS X installation CD/DVD. Replace the one currently on the hard drive.
But there's quite a few other apps that will open a TIFF. Photoshop, Graphic Converter, InDesign, Quark and Illustrator to name a few. There's a bunch of free and shareware viewers you could download here.

  • Sort by name apple mail

My Mail is always sorted by date, but before, i could click on a mail, then click sort by name, to find another mail from the same person.
Now when i click on sort by name, the first email dissappeers and i have to scroll threw my 10.000 mails to get to the letter from the persons name..
As before it would stick with the mail i clicked on.

[This is a C&P from Leopard days but the problem has started for me in Yosemite]
Not sure if it is me or this is just the way Apple Mail works.
Logic would assume that if you select a message in Apple Mail and that message is highlighted, not opened, and you click the From column so you can sort by that column Apple Mail would make sure that, when it is sorted, the highlighted message would still be in your view.  I can get this to work sometimes and other times it does not, so it is starting to bother me.
Is there something that I am missing...some step...or is this just the way it works, sometimes?
    Thanks.

  • Organizer will not open on PSE 8 Mac, how do i access?

I just installed PSE 8 for Mac. I chose this version of PSE for the organizer which I was trained in and intend to transfer files from I -Photo (someway) to PSE. Anyway the issue now is that there is no organizer tab to set up organization. There is an essential tab but it does not respond. Can anyone help ?

I read the intro to new PSE 8 which specifically indicated
that it had Organizer...the first time for Mac.
No, not this time, I'm afraid. Still no organizer. Where did you see this?
I don't use either organizer or iphoto much, because I just don't love asset management programs, but to use iphoto with PSE, you have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor and send your photos from iphoto. Save, not Save As, without changing name or format (you may need to go into the PSE preferences>On First Save to be able to do this) and iphoto will remember one edited photo version plus original.
    2. Export your photos from iphoto before editing, then use File>Open in PSE, reimport the edited photos under a new name. This allows you to save as many different versions and formats as you like.
I mostly use bridge and my own folder system for organizing photos.
In PSE 8 it is technically possible to open photos in iphoto using the Open command in PSE, but since their thumbnails never update in iphoto and you can't right click to choose any editing options after doing this, I'd advise against it, since evidently iphoto doesn't like it much.
