'Sort by' tags for music ignored?

There are some albums for an artist where I want to sort by something other than the actual album name, and so I use the appropriate 'Sort by' tag. This works fine in iTunes and I get my albums listed accordingly, but the Apple TV doesn't seem to use it and lists by actual album name.
Am I doing something wrong or is this really the case?
I've only had my Apple TV a couple of days and updated the software to 1.1 immediately, so I can't comment on what the original software did.

Thanks for the response. I am currently making a long list of improvements and issues to provide Apple with feedback, both for the Apple TV and the iPod.
Whilst I accept the point that the Apple TV has only been out for a relatively short time, in my opinion, it comes from the iPod family and is aimed at iPod users. I would expect the way things are shown and sorted on the Apple TV to be the same/similar as the iPod. For this reason I bought it, so that I could have one central store of music and audiobooks with an Apple TV set of TV shows and movies and an iPod set of TV shows and movies. This would allow me to sync easily with the iPod and the Apple TV.
There are some obvious errors in the way the Apple TV orders audiobook tracks, where the iPod gets it right. Also, why would you want to Shuffle the tracks of an audiobook?
The Apple TV is fairly simple to use and adding more preference options only affects those who want to change from the default settings. Users only have to go into changing the preferences if that is what they want to do.
There are some features of the iPod that make it easy to use in the way I want but are not on the Apple TV. There are also some features of the Apple TV that make it easy to use in the way I want but are not on the iPod. I feel that both should be made consistent with each other.
At the moment, I will need to put my audiobooks from CD as audiobook .m4b files for the Apple TV (which shows a sub-menu for album and so that it remembers playback position) and as music .m4a files for the iPod (as there is no sub-menu for album in audiobooks). This uses up twice the disc space and they have to be managed differently! For example, for the iPod I can use Sort Album field to show my Harry Potter audiobooks in series order but for the Apple TV I have to prefix the name the audiobooks with the book number.

  • What fields do you all use for tagging your music?

As question please. I'm tagging all my music and wondering what everyone choses? I do artist, song name, album name, album artist (for compalations eg Now Music 71), year, genre. This seems enough for sorting on my Mac and my iPods. Anyone any others or any hints please?

I always fill in the *Album Artist* and *Track Number* (which I assume you forgot to list in your initial post).
Comments tend to get used to store information I don't want cluttering up the track or album titles as well as general comments.
I sometimes use the various Sort... fields to adjust the order in which things get listed - more on that here.
I generally use the Grouping field for Smart Playlists, e.g. iTSW for *iTunes Single Of The Week* and to help manage multiple iPods:
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iPods using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their iPod. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • ID3 Tags and Music Sort

My mp3 ID3 tags are all messed up here and there. As I fix them in MediaSOurce, the "file" stays where it is and cannot be moved to where it belongs (in the appropriate folder). Any idea on how to move files around that are on the player?

Not sure if this is the same thing the OP is talking about, but I have a similar problem with my Zen Xtra. Mediasource doesn't seem to want to let me edit tag info (except track number) for music that's on the player- which gets annoying if I'm trying to correct the genre for something or combine entries for "Smashing Pumpkins" and "The Smashing Pumpkins." The only workaround I've found is to edit the tags for the files on my hard dri've, then re-transfer them to the player, which I'm usually too lazy to do. Is there some more efficient way to do this?

  • ITunes 12 keeps reverting back to default info tags for purchased music

I have a large library of roughly 18,000 songs and the majority of them were not purchased through iTunes. I have my library very well organized, including detailed genre tags. iTunes by default only has music from their store tagged with very basic genre terms such as "rock, pop, alternative"... but when I go to change the info on the purchased songs to more specific tags such as "progressive rock, pop rock, alternative metal" it takes effect just fine, but only temporarily. When I go back to look at my list of genres a couple days later, the tags always seem to revert back to the basic "rock, pop, alternative" tags. Every time. And this only happens with the music purchased from the iTunes store, not the music from CDs and downloaded through other sources. Is there a way to stop iTunes 12 from screwing with my info tags for my music? This is becoming quite annoying.

Make sure that these two options in Edit > Preferences > Store are turned off:
Then exit iTunes and open it up again.  Your metadata entries should then be persistent - with these options checked iTunes will be comparing what you have with the information held in the iTunes Store, and will overwrite with the latter for Store purchases (and if you have iTunes Match).  If you have any iOS devices you should also turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

  • Sort Artist and Sort Album tags don't update

Having spent a lot of time over the years getting the metadata in my iTunes library just right, I've noticed a frustrating problem when it comes to iTunes Match.
I make use of 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' tags so that my library is sorted by artist surname (eg. Lennon, John).
This always worked correctly when I syncronised my music via iTunes, but since switching over to iTunes Match this has become problematic.
When I initially signed up for iTunes Match, my Library moved over correctly - honouring the sort order tags that I had added. However, When I add NEW music to the library and subsequently change the sort tag, the change does not propegate to iTunes Match (Though it does appear correct in iTunes on my Mac). So the result is now a mixed sort order on my iOS devices - some by first name and some by second.
Under iOS 5.0 and iTunes 10 I used to be able to get around this with a little forethought - I would turn iTunes Match OFF on the Mac before adding any new songs, then I would edit the tags and then switch Match back on. This would rescan the library and add the new tracks to the cloud complete with correct metadata.
This workaround no longer works under iOS 6 and iTunes 11.
I have tried switching iTunes match off on my iPhone and restarting it. This does not work either.
Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way to 'force' the metadata to be updated?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I also am finding it impossible to convince my iPhone that the Album Sort field exists. This is especially odd considering when I view my Home Shared music from my iPhone, it works exactly correctly. I have verified that the tags are being uploaded to iTunes Match by viewing the songs from another computer that has iTunes Match. So, for some reason, iOS 6 will not sort by the Album Sort field when using iTunes Match music.
Does anyone have any sort of fix or workaround for this problem? I've submitted Feedback to Apple.

  • Any hope for music folders on the ipod Touch?

    Hi All
It is getting VERY difficult to manage my music on my 32 Gb iPod Touch. I have hundreds of playlists (for example one playlist for every version of a classical piece; on playlist for a pop album, etc. etc.)
Is there any hope for music folders as in iTunes on the Touch?
    ed

Why do you have a playlist for every album? If your tracks are tagged properly, you can just use the album menu on the Touch.
As for when/if there will be folders on the Touch, the only people who know are probably working under non-disclosure agreements. Who knows what will change when version 2.0 of the software comes out next month.
    Best of luck.

  • Cyrillic ID3 tags in Music Player

I have a n82 and love it, but I tried to loaded a cd album which contains Russian ID3, but when i try to view the artist, song, album names in the phones built-in music player all I see is weird characters as though my phone doesn't support non-Unicode text. I know for a fact that it displays files with Russian taext in the file name just fine and writes and read in Russian just fine but the ID3 tags are a bit tricky for it.
What can I do to make the music player display Russian ID3 tags properly?

as i know, sans serif doesnt provide unicode mapping. have you tried to change to arial unicode or others eg. code2000??
I'm using arial unicode ms to show japanese symbols, and it should work for cyrillic too, since cyrillic is also mapped in arial unicode. font changing is also affect in all app (i suppose), including java app.
my N73 ME APAC (indonesia) is only able to display latin chars,n by changing the font (that is supports unicode one), now my phone is able to show japanese symbol (including ID3 tag in music player).

  • ID3 tags for non-purchased TV shows

I think Apple's approach to ID3 tags for purchased TV shows is perfect. You can browse by the show name, select the one you want (ie. Lost vs Desperate Housewives), then the specific episode names appear on the next iPod screen.
However, all of the ID3 tags used for purchased shows are not available for shows downloaded through bittorrent or recorded with EyeTV. This means we can't use tags for "Season", "Episode #" and "Show". I think they would work if only we could declare the "Video Kind: TV Show", but this option is grayed out in the file's "Get Info" options tab.
This severely impacts browsing for videos on the iPod. Currently I have to name my videos something like this "CSI: Season 6: Episode 1: Bodies in Motion" in order to browse effectively for the file on my iPod. I'd love to name it simply "Bodies in Motion" -- WITHIN the "Season 6" folder -- WITHIN the "CSI" folder. [I'm not using "folder" literally -- I'm just trying to imply a hierarchical structure.] Without these tags, this "foldered" browsing isn't possible.
Anybody figured out how to get around this obstacle?

I downloaded a TV Show and three music videos and the music videos are on my Ipod but the TV show is not and there is no category for TV only for movies and suggestions

  • ITunes 11.1.2 not registering new ID3 v2.4 tags (Deleting music from both library and HDD)

I'm a DJ and therefore have ALOT of editing in my iTunes music library (adding and deleting tracks, commenting, adding tracks to new- and smart playlists etc.).
Music management on the hdd -wise, I frequently use the ID3 tags for deleting tracks from both the music library and my hdd, but since updating iTunes to 11.1.2 i'm having difficulties.
I have this routine for deleting tracks:
Rating tracks due to delete with 0 stars
Going to smart playlist called 'To trash' (filter = 0 stars), select all tracks
    Adding/changing genre to 'to trash'
Searching for 'Move to trash' in my HDD music folder
Move all mp3 files to trash, empty trash
iTunes, run Doug Script 'Super Remove Dead Tracks'
After the routine, all tracks I decided to delete, where deleted from both the library and hdd folder.
BUT, now it seems that Finder doesn't find any mp3 files with the ID3 metatag of 'to trash' (Step 4), hence i cannot "smart find" the tracks i want to delete.
    Possible cause of the problem: i'm suspecting it to be iTunes not "tagging" properly;
All of my "DJ-tags", such as 'MTV' and 'Mainstream' etc, in comments, tagged before updating to 11.1.2, can be found by these metatags, but it seems like new tags/comments are not "registered" in the ID3 metatags - at least not recognized by Finder.
Note: I know that i can just downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but I'm very interested in having my equipment up to date, since I'm using it professionally, and want it to be as stable as possible with my hardware.
    Any suggestions?

The next question it will ask is if you want to delete from your HD.
Anyways, the topic is (mostly) about iTunes not tagging properly (apparently).
    Yes, there are two issues.
    ID3 tags.
Your workflow, which is way too much. Use the computer to do the work, not you. No need to pull your engine just to change the oil.
Just checked and the ID3 tags works fine here.
    Do this.
    System prefs > Spotlight.
Select the Privacy tab and add the drive with your media.
Then remove the drive with your media.
This will force the OS to rebuild the Spotlight index files, which where the metadata for files is stored for searching.
This app you can view the Spotlight metadata of files/folders.

Note: I know that i can just downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but I'm very interested in having my equipment up to date,
FYI: iTunes 11.1.3 was released Tuesday , 5 November.

  • What about iCal event tagging for better event organization ?

Actually, it is possible to create several calendars (e.g., Work, Personal, Kids, ...) to organize your events.
Then, you can choose to simultaneously view events of one or many calendars.
But what about a more flexible tagging mechanism ?
We would be able to multi-tag an event.
Then, we would be able to simultaneously view events that match some tags and not some other tags.
We would be able to create intelligent calendar views that simultaneously display events that match some tags and not some other tags.
Tagging is a feature provided today by iPhoto for photos.
Intelligent view based on a expression is a feature provided today by iTunes for musics.
It would be nice to generalize these concepts
Is there any plan to introduce event tagging in iCal ?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

This is what I think it means:
"Depending on whether you want the event type to be deactivated when its listeners have acknowledged receipt of the event, select either Upon Notification or Never."
I think deactivate the event means, it's not available anymore on the queue. You can ensure it doesn't stay on the queue after you catch it (Upon Notification), or you can catch it and then deactivate (or remove it from the queue) manually using your own service.
"For example, you might select Never if a service is handling the notification and any deactivation of the event type."
I think that what they mean here. If you select "Never" then, you catch the event, and you're responsible to deactivate it (remove it from the queue).

  • My sound works for music but not apps

My sound works for music but not apps

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Set Show tag for Movies gives sub-menus, new feature to update 2.3?

I heard some people mention using playlist for reducing the size of the movies list, but I've noticed that if you set the Show tag for movies (which I have already done for some of mine where the movies are part of a series - for example Discworld movies recorded off TV and converted for the AppleTV) that you now get an entry under Movies which is taken from the Show tag and a '>' symbol at the end of the row. If you select the entry, you then get a sub-menu of those movies sharing that Show tag.
This is not a feature I've heard mentioned before, either on this forum or in the spec. for update 2.3 and was wondering if this was new to update 2.3 and whether this is now a feature or something which Apple could remove in the next update?

Just to add a bit of doom and gloom
Apple still haven't fixed the issue of the ordering of movies in the Shared Movies list. Under My Movies, the AppleTV seems to use the Sort Name tag (correctly in my opinion), but under Shared Movies the AppleTV is still using the Name tag. I have the same videos under both menus, so I know it's an issue with the way the AppleTV is handling the tags between the two menus.
Just wanted to add my bit of doom and gloom for that day, that's all
