Sort by year

I'd really love to sort my music by 'year' within my ipod, i.e. the same as you can sort by 'album', 'artist', 'genre' etc. I can bring up the 'year' column in itunes, however, can't find an option to duplicate this onto my ipod. I'd happily swap 'genre' for 'year' on my ipod as i never use the former as a pathway to a song / album when selecting music.
Any suggestions welcome.

In Song View, Add the Year column and then click on its heading.  That appears to be the only way to do it.

  • Sort by "Year" in "Genre View" in iTunes 11

Not having a lot of luck with iTunes 11.
I am deep with a large number of albums by certain Artist (The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, Van Morrison, etc.  ...). To manage my collection I have given (for example) "The Beatles" their own Genre. So, when I'm in "Genre View" I want my Beatle albums sorted by "Year" and not Alphabetical.
Both "Genre View" and "Artists View" seem to be static and the number of sorting options are limited.
    I'm I missing something?

    You mean like that?

  • Play Order on Album Sort by Year Funk

I was super pleased to find that iTunes 9.01 fixed the bug regarding sorting multi-disc albums while sorting album by year.
However, now I'm noticing that when I'm playing an artist's discography, while sorted by year, instead of playing the albums in chronological order (like they've been visually sorted), it plays the albums in alphabetical order (default sort). So I could be playing an artists' first of five albums, but if the album name starts with a 'Z' then it will just stop the playlist all together, as if the end of said playlist has been reached.
Also, does anyone else who sorts by year find it annoying that iTunes finds it prudent to always switch back to sorting by album alphabetically whenever I'm not looking? I find that quite annoying.
    Any ideas? Thoughts? Thanks!

Oh poop. I just updated the two extensions "I Love Stars" and "Cover Stream."
I'm no longer having problems with my music stopping after 'all' of an artists' music plays 'all' through. But still, anyone else having similar issues?

  • Sorting Same Year Albums

Hello, I have looked for a solution, and so far nothing. Hope someone can help me here!
Here's my situation. I have separate Smart Playlists for my Artists, and I sort by year within them for the artist's chronological library of songs. Here's the issue: I have an instance or two where the artist released two albums in the same year (in this case - KISS released self-titled album "KISS" and "Hotter Than ****" both in 1974).
And again in this instance, it places these albums in Alphabetical view based on album title. This causes Hotter Than **** to be placed first, which isn't correct.
Is there a way to either refine for more precise release date, or a totally different way of going by this?
    Any help would rock

    I've had this problem too.
I solved it by entering a new value in the Album sorting field.
Select all songs > get info > Sorting
Note: The album title will still show as "Kiss".

  • Sorting the year without affecting the tracks

How do I sort the year from most recent to oldest without affecting the order of the tracks?

The most recent albums at the top of the list is "last is listed on top", and apparently Apple has not set up a sub filter to list albums "last on top" while listing tracks "first on top".
If you list Albums "first on top" then the tracks will also be "first on top".
    Yeah it's kinky.
At the top of iTunes, click iTunes/Provide iTunes Feedback. Tell Apple what you think.

  • ITunes 11 needs to fix how it sorts "By Year"

I always organize my music by year, followed "By Title". And each album has songs that were released a year later from the time the whole album was released. Unlike before, iTunes sorts by year BASED ON THE FIRST TRACK. That is no longer the case. Any other song that has a year above iTunes will sort to base on that.
For example, Olly Murs' debut album release year is 2010 though track no.4 "Busy" was released in 2011. iTunes will sort the album by year according to track no.4 as if the entire album was released in 2011 when the other tracks are 2010.Now all my albums are not in their yearly order.
Apple, please fix this and sort by the first track's order.

  • Sorting By Year Released

    Hello,
Within iTunes playlists I want to sort by "Year" in descending order, so that the newest album appears at the top of the playlist. But for some reason when I do that it then displays the tracks in descending order, which makes no sense.
Is there a way to sort it so that the newest album is as the top but the tracks are still in ascending order (1, 2, 3, instead of 3,2,1)?
    Thanks
    G

I know. Smart Playlists are OK, but you get a limited number of fixed sort orders, and reversing them isn't album sensitve. I'd also like raw SQL (like) Playlists where you get to play with subfield ordering too.
You could drop a line to iTunes Feedback.

  • IPhone Music Sorting - Album year field

    Hi
I originally posted the below in the iPhone section, but I think it may be more appropriate here.
I have a selection of radio shows and podcasts that I want to sort into a certain order on my iPhone, but no matter what I do in iTunes I cannot get them to display correctly.  Here's what I have done so far:
    1. Split the 'songs' into 'albums', with one album for each series/ group of podcasts.
    2. Made sure that all of the 'songs' are correctly labelled in the 'info' tab.  The following is the same for all songs:
         - Artist
         - Album Artist
         - All other fields are blank (with the exception of 'Year' which I will come on to later)
    3. Changed the 'Album Sort' field on the 'Sorting' tab so that the albums are sorted in chronological order and the actual title of the 'album' is ignored.  e.g.:
         - XFM Series 1 (from 2001) is labelled as 'A' in the 'Album Sort' field
         - XFM Series 2 (from 2002) is labelled as 'B'
         - XFM Series 3 (from 2003) is labelled as 'C'
         - XFM Series 4 (from 2004) is labelled as 'D'
         - Radio 2 shows (from 2005) are labelled as 'E'
Doing the above gets the albums to display perfectly in iTunes, with them being sorted in chronological order as dictated by the 'Album Sort' field.
I then synced the albums onto my iPhone and expected all to be well, but instead found that when I went to the 'Artists' tab they were listed in reverse chronological order (newest album first).  So to fix this I went into iTunes and tried the following:
    1. Went into the 'info' tab for all albums and set the year to 2001 for all.  As the year is the same for all it should now sort by 'Album Sort' in theory.  That didn't work though so I tried...
    2. Set the years in reverse order for each album, so that the latest series 'Radio 2 shows' was labelled as 2001, and the oldest album 'XFM Series 1' was labelled as 2005.
That still didn't work, but even more strangely when I view the album on the iPhone a different year is being displayed under the title, e.g.:
    XFM Series 3
    12 Songs, 686 mins
    2006
I have checked that album in iTunes and 2006 is not contained anywhere on the album or song info tabs.  I have tried to add a different year in the year field, and also delete the year field, but no matter what I do 2006 continues to be displayed.
Where is this year being held within the file and how can I change it?  I checked the ID3 tags for a song from that album in VLC and could not see 2006 referenced anywhere.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • Sort by year using Apple Remote App?

Is it possible to search albums by year using the Apple Remote App?
I can see album year on my Mac though.....

Add me to the frustrated list when it comes to Apple's insane logic for sorting. I want iTunes to allow me to sort by artist first, and by date second. But Apple won't let me.
I want to sort by a nearly infinite combination of settings, but apple tells me otherwise. It's got me on the hunt for a new music organizing database app for my music. If a good one comes along, iTunes will be relegated to the app that syncs my iPhone, and nothing else. ;-)

  • ITunes My Movies - Sort by year in genres view

    Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if it's a topic already solved but so far I didn't found it anywhere.
    Anyway, what I wonder is
In the iTunes My Movies section you have 3 kinds of viewing. "Movies" "Movie List" "Genres"
Each one have different type of sorting
In "Movies" and "Movie List" every sorting works fine
In "Genres", even if I select the "by Year" sorting it will continue to sort it by title...
    Any clues?

    You mean like that?

  • Album view sorted by year in reversed order?

Apple, why did you take this feature away? People with large libraries of albums don't want to scroll down a long way to get to the albums added lately.
The option to show the year of the files added in album view was also a big hit in previous versions.

Really really annoying! Over the years I ordered manually my huge library sorting tracks with this technique:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/263083-sort-order-when-using-album-artis t-year-album-list-view.html
Now this trick doesn't work anymore and there's no way to order albums descending.
The new GUI is absolutely nice, Apple give us an additional selectbox like JayBrar says

  • Auto Sort by Year

I'd like my iTunes to by default sort the albums from an artist, when viewing that artists little area (using the second view mode, whatever it's called), by year, instead of alphabetically. What I currently do is click on the year to sort it by year every time I open iTunes, but there's gotta be a better way. Any help? Thanks,
    David

No, if you knew how to write scripts, you could make one to do it, though.

  • Sorting by year

I am using the Windows version of iTunes and wish to sort my library by year. However, when I try this the years are sorted correctly but the tracks for each album are organised in descending order. I also noticed that this does not occur on the Mac version. Does anyone else have this problem and are there any solutions? Thanks.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Click the column heading or the little black triangle to reverse the order. As far as I can make out the Year column sorts by ascending Year, then Artist, Album, *Disc. No*, & *Track No.* in decreasing order of significance. The whole list can be inverted but this then puts the tracks of each album in reverse order as you have found. Each column sort in iTunes has some kind of sub-ordering but these are not under user control so what you see is what you get.

  • How to sort a year in a Dimension Date created in SSAS

    Hi
I create a Dimension Date using SSAS 2008 but when i execute the dimension and i go to see the result i have this result:
    the result is not sorted
what i need is having the result order by year i mean i have Calendrier 2020,Calendrier 2019 ...

    Hi YassirCool,
According to your description, you want to sort the dimension member in descending order. Right?
In this scenario, we can use Order() function in our MDX query. please refer query below:
select [Measures].[Internet Sales Amount] on 0,
    ORDER([Date].[Calendar].[Calendar Year].members,
    [Date].[Calendar].currentmember.member_name,desc) on 1
    from
    [Adventure Works]

    Order (MDX)
