Sort photos into folders-within-folders? Thanks guys.

Hey guys, does anyone know if it's possible to place photo albums into folders? I.e. Can I essentially sort my photos into folders-within-folders? If not, any opinions on the best app that achieves this? Thanks guys.

1 - do not go into the iPhoto library using the finder and never, never make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder or other programs - use iPhoto to manage your photos - it must totally control the library - it is a SQL database
2 - Within iPhoto you can create albums from photos and you can create folders - folders can hold albums or other folders
3 - you also have smart albums and the search in the lower left which lets you find any photo easily if you have assigned faces, places and keywords

  • How do I created multiple folders within folders in "Photo"

How do I created multiple folders within folders (subfolders) in "Photo".  It happens in the first level when I use the Albums folder, but thereafter it doesn't allow me to create another folder within the folder.  I can also not drag a folder into another, after the first level of folders.  Please help.

Yes you can.  Click once on the top folder and use the File ➙ Create Folder menu option.  A new folder will be created inside the selected folder:

  • In IE I used different levels of folders for my favourites. After importing I miss the bookmarks of folders within folders within folders etc.

In Internet Explorer it is possible to organize favourites with folders as in firefox. In these folders you can make new folders and within those new folders. Can this tree structure be used in Firefox? After importing most of my favourites are gone, I can find no folders within folders within folders etc. So most of my favourites are not imported from IE.

Thanks for the helpful thoughts LarryHN. I'm having a Mac guy look at my MacBook Pro in the next day or so to see what he can find out. I described the issue on the phone... and like you, he said that saving my documents to a thumb drive shouldn't affect my iPhoto library.
One reason I bought the thumb drive was to back up my iPhoto library, but the time I got to that, it was already gone. I've thought of getting Time Machine (and have checked out other systems), but the reviews are so mixed, I'm dragging my feet on coughing up the cash right now.
When I launch iPhoto, I only see the last few weeks' worth of photos. Oddly, photos I imported 3 weeks ago appear, but are in a folder dated November 2012--when I know I took those and imported them in January 2013. So that's weird...
When I got to iPhoto Library, I have an Auto Import folder with nothing in it. "My Pictures" folder has nothing as well. I did hold down the option key while opening up iPhoto, but only my recent library (a few weeks' worth of photos) appears. I'm using iPhoto 2011 (6.2.3). I can only hope my Mac guy can help...

  • Pages: creating folders within folders

Using Pages in iWork on a MacBook (system 10.9.4), is it possible to create folders within folders? Dragging one document  and dropping it on another one isn't working within a folder.

That is an iOS method, not an OSX method.
command shift n creates a new folder in Finder or in a Save dialog, then move or save the file into that folder.

  • Does Pages have the facility to create folders within folders?

Having the ability to do this would encourage me to change from Microsoft word to Pages. Is it possible?

In Pages for OS X, you can't create folders within folders if you are using iCloud to store your documents, but you can do this if you are storing them on your hard disk.
In Pages for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, you can't create folders within folders, so you are free to switch if you need this feature. Note that Office is only available for the iPhone if you are an Office 365 subscriber

  • Applying workflow to folders within folders

We are currently moving all of our backup files to a Windows file share and all of our older files that have odd characters (i.e. ">", "*", ect), Can not be copied over. I found a Apple Script that will change all of the characters to Web Friendly (thanks to Mike Piontek ( http://mikepiontek.com )). This seems to be helping changing the file names.
The question i have is how to apply it to the main folder, and have it change all of the files and folders within it. We are trying to move about 30k files and manually going through them is becoming quite the procedure.
    Thanks for your help
    Stuart.

I could see the freeze can be applied to the Record Folders and Contents."Records folders" and "Contribution Folders" are not the same thing. You can't freeze a Contribution Folder itself as I said earlier, just the content in the Contribution Folder. You can freeze a "records" folder, but if objects are stored in the retention schedule at the category level and not at the records folder level, such a freeze would be useless. (You can't freeze a category either.)

I forget the exact option in 10g, but in 11g, this is done under the "Edit" menu on the Content Information page.

  • After sorting photos into albums, the albums disappeared on me. I dragged and dropped the photos and went back to check that they were in place before exiting the program. When I went back, the folder was there but no albums. Help!

Working on an IMac - with IPhoto v.9.6
This is my first experience with IPhoto... trying to move files from a PC over to a Mac.
I don't have a ton of photos but I created about 6 albums - standard albums - and dragged and dropped individual photos into each of the albums. I named each of the albums as well so I would know what was in each. After i was finished, I created a folder called 2014 and moved each of the albums into that folder. Before moving ANY of the albums, I opened each of them up to make sure that all the photos I wanted in each were indeed there - and since there were some errors on my part, I deleted any duplicates first. SO, I KNOW the photos were actually in each of the albums BEFORE i moved them into the 2014 folder.
My intention was to then delete the photo files in my document file but once I got there I thought I would go back and double check the IPhoto file just to make sure... and the pictures were NOT in the albums where I had placed them... is there a need to save this before you move on and if so, to where and how? I was under the impression that once files were moved to albums, they remain there.
The photos are still in the photo library but unsorted now again... I cannot even open the 2014 folder at this point.
    Thanks for any help!!

Was back on IPhoto this morning. The folder did not open at all so I deleted it. Beside Albums, nothing showed at all. It was like I had done no work at all except to import my photo folder. Nothing was in my trash bin either.
I started again and created one album at a time. I dragged and dropped photos into the album and exited out of IPhoto, opened up other programs and then returned to IPhoto to see if the album was still there and it was this time. I created a second album and did the same thing. This time, for some reason, the albums seem to be staying in place. I am not doing anything differently than last time. After creating three albums, I created a folder called 2014 and dragged and dropped the three albums into the folder and exited IPhoto. They were still there when I returned - YEAH! It seems to be working - for now! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my photos are not going to disappear but I am not going to delete my photo folder from my files just in case!
Thanks for the suggestions but this may just have been a funny glitch... not sure what happened. I didn't change anything or do anything differently this time except that I am doing it one album at a time and exiting the program between creating each of them and coming back to check... very strange.

  • Help! can't drag photos into or within imovie

I have a couple hundred pictures in imovie already.  everything was working fine, and now I am unable to drag photos into the project.  it shows the green line and the plus sign as if its adding it but nothing happens.  it has been freezing and i have tried restarting it which worked initially but not anymore.  I can add music and videos, just not pictures. I also realized that I cannot drag the photos around within the project now. I have to present this on Monday! I make a slideshow/movie every year and this is a brand new MacBook so I can't believe I am having problems when my old computer worked fine!

    Any of the Following:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards

  • How can I sort photos into albums on my iPad and then export them to my iMac?

I want to import photos from my camera card into my iPad, sort them into various albums then export the albums to my iMac. I have 12 albums in Photos with around 300 photos on my iPad, but when I connect it to my iMac iPhoto tries to import all of the 1800 photos without the album structure. How do I transfer the albums and the 300 photos in them to my iMac?

Yes, but the recipient may not be getting the full image file that was used to make the Shared Photo Stream. You would have to run a test to see if there's any reduction in the image and file size. The following is from iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
What resolution are the photos in shared photo streams?
Shared Photo Streams deliver photos in a device-optimized resolution that speeds upload and downloads and saves storage space. While actual dimensions will vary, an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. Panoramic photos can be up to 5400 pixels wide.

  • Can I organise photos into albums within iCloud Photo Library?

i Understand that edits / deletes etc in iCloud Photo Libary will be reflected on all my iOS devices but can I organise my photos into albums using iCloud photo library?
basically I want to take photos on my iPhone, review them on my iPad, delete the ones I don't want and keep the good ones in a relevant album (e.g. "Summer holiday 2014"). Then I want to be able to see identical albums on both my iPad and iPhone. From what I've seen so far, when I create an album and save a photo to it then that album is only local to that device?
    please help.

Are you saying it showed 800 photos before turning off iCloud photo library or that the 800 photos disappeared after you enabled iCloud photo library for the first time, the distinction is quite important.

  • Sort photos into folders (like Finder)

    Hello all,
I'm using iPhoto for a very short time now and have some trouble finding stuff in it.
I've transferred all my pictures in the library but they're all into events or photos, organized randomly.
I would like to have them all sorted just like in the Finder, with the folders and sub-folders.
Do I have to do all this manually???
    Thanks already

  • Firefox 4 Hidden Cache Divided Into Folders, and Folders Within Folders

Firefox 4 - Hidden Cache Divided Into Folders
I don't want cache divided into folders and more folders.
It's now virtually impossible to copy and save streamed media directly from the hidden cache.
Solution to permanently eliminating all the folders and reverting back to 1 cache folder filled with a list?

I'll try to explain this more coherently -
    documents and settings/owner/local settings/application data/mozilla/firefox/profiles/profile-name_default/cache
Firefox 4 has a new caching system
cache - open up and say hello to multiple folders and subfolders, instead of single cache folder filled with cached files
This is making it an utter nightmare to try and copy/save streamed media, flash videos, unsaved pictures, other documents, etc
Many files in the hidden cache are not stored in "Temp" folder or "Temporary Internet Files" folder, the hidden cache is the only location where they're stored
How can users revert back the old cache (single folder) system?

  • How can I put folders within folders in alphabetical order in MAIL?

In Mail I have several folders covering my major areas of work.  in each of these folders I may have 10 to 50 subfolders,  which represent my clients.
All I ant to do is put these sub-folders in alphabetical order so I can locate them rapidly.  Can I?

THANKS LANNY.  THIS MEANS THAT THERE IS NO AUTOMATIC ALPHEBETICAL
Thanks, Lanny.  I suppose this means there is no command I can use to put my folders in alphabetical order automatically.
I am dragging them now -- but with about 30 folders with 40 to 50 names in each ... this is a time consuming chore
that shouldn't be necessary.  Apple should pay more attention to MAIL .... most of my Apple friends do not even use itl.

  • Shortcut for opening folders within folders?

    Hi,
Isn't there a shortcut for opening a file that's in, like, four folders? Today I opened and opened, then thought, I know there's an easier way.
    Thanks,
    Allan

Highlight the item you wish to open quickly. Hold down option + command and drag the item to a convenient location such as your Desktop to create an alias (shortcut) to the item.

  • How to alphabetically sort albums and folders within a folder

Much to my dismay, I discovered that iPhoto will not alphabetically sort folders or albums that are within a folder. It will only sort folders and albums (in separate groups) that are at the "root" level beneath the ALBUMS label. I used "iPhoto Folder Import 1.0" to import multiple clip art and stock photo files which resulted in many nested folders and albums that did not stay in alphabetical order (because iPhoto often randomize them when you add them to an existing folder).
Here's how to get around the problem.
Albums: 1. Select all the albums in a folder. 2. Drag the albums to the ALBUMS label so they end up on the root level. 3. Right click on any of the selected albums and choose "Sort Albums." 4. Drag the still selected albums back into their original folder. They should retain their alphabetical order.
Folders: 1. Close all the folders that you want to alphabetize. 2. Follow steps 1-4 above with "folders" in place "albums."
I cannot understand why sorting won't work within folders. I also do not understand why we don't have the option to alphabetically interleave folders and albums. The only way to achieve this is to create folders for just one album, which seems silly.

How do you suggest i resolve the issue of different data types in order to use this function? I have tried a few different ways and have whenever I adjust, it wont run through my sub VI's correctly due to being different data types.
You have to READ THE FILES.  Jeff just showed you how to use a FOR loop to go through the files.  You still need to open the files, read them and then process the data.
I had assumed from CSmith8's original post that the text file processing vi worked.  just drop that vi into the for loop and wire the file name in!
Alternately, attach the code that processes the file and a sample file.  I bet we can show you a thing or two about how to do it cleaner and faster  then point you to the right learning resources so one day you can show us some new tricks.
