Sorting albums in Itunes

How do I sort my albums of the same artist in years and not on the names. I'm using the Artist lookup as you can see below. It's dutch by the way.

I use a much older iTunes but if I click on the albums column header it will change the sort criteria such as by artist by year, an repeated clicks will reverse the sort order.
I don't see any picures.  You have to attach them using the camera icon in the editor window.

  • Is it possible to sort a 2CD compilation album where each CD has a different "album artist" together as one album in iTunes?

I have an album which I am trying to sort correctly in iTunes.
It has 2CDs of tracks by various artists, it is set up as a 'compilation' and I have 'album artist' set up.
As far as I can see all the settings are correct, however CD1 is a compilation of tracks remixed by "artist A" and CD2 is a compilation of tracks remixed by "artist B" therefore  becasue each disc has a different album artist, the album is split into two seperate albums on album view.
Is there any way to get this to display as one album?
The album is released as "Artist A" so for now I have set that name as the 'album artist' for CD2 as well to get round it but would ideally like to have the second CD labelled correctly with the second artist's information.
I suppose I could also use "Arist A / Artist B" for both CDs but would prefer not to do this as well so that it would be grouped with other (solo) albums from these artists.
    Cheers for any help!

Your options are to treat this as one collective album by the joint Album Artists, or as two separate albums by them as individuals, or I suppose you could duplicate the entire album and do both.

  • How do you change the album sort order in itunes

It seems that Itunes sorts albums by Artist then Album... How can you change sort order to Album name only.

I've been playing with this and discovered it has to do with your personal ratings (ie stars) for albums and songs - seems iTunes now selects the highest rated album to use for the Artist icon. If you have no ratings it seems (but not always) to select the most recent album/song to use fo rthe display.
I've been able to get iTunes to use specific album artowk by rating both the album and all individual tracks as 5 star. You may need to restart iTunes for the changes to take effect.
But I'd be much happier just telling iTunes which image to use - like we used to be able to do. Yet another step backwards for iTunes 11 (one of many).

  • Ipod classic sorts album other than in itunes

i sorted all my albums in itunes as i like it by album interpret. On Ipod this order is ignored. I wanted all the albums for the Kids at the beginning of Cover Flow.
How do i change the order of albums on the ipod?

hi Jeff. Since you know all very well, one last question since i just started using i-tunes and i-pod.
In i-tunes i sorted a lot of stuff like DJ-Sets, or music from other sources than CD by album artist. That works well.
My I-Pod Classic syncs an is saying me "Unknown Artist" or "Various Artists" for that albums and puts some to Compilations, some to different places. I want the DJ Sets at the same position as the published CDs for example.
Again, i have all that in i-tunes done already and it works.
For Example cannot move Cafe del to "C" on ipod, its always at the end at Various Artist...
Maybe not all wording correct since i use i-tunes and i-pod in german

  • Sort albums by descending year - itunes unable to play album

I prefer my albums to be displayed in itunes with the latest albums first.  So I use grid view albums and set 'sort by' to 'descending'.
When i select an album to play it will play the first track but the track numbers are ALSO in descending order and when clicking next it doesn't play the next track.  If I go into the album and click next, the album ends because it thinks the first track of the album is the last.
This is because the track numberings are also in descending order.
Why would itunes do this?  Why are not these functions mutually exclusive?
This is a major ridiculous flaw in itunes that doens't allow you to play your latest albums in order.
You are forced to have your 1967 classical album at the top of your itunes if you want to play your albums with the track numbers in order and all your latest albums down the bottom.
I'm sure this has been posted before, but any comments, suggestions, feedback from apple themselves, about this problem appreciated.

seems this is a problem people have complained about for years without any resolve to it.  Unbelievable.  2012 and you can't play your latest albums in itunes, hah, what a joke

  • Album Sort Order in iTunes vs iPod

WIth the newer Versions of iTunes, albums are sorted in alphabetical order ignoring the word "The". (i.e. On iTunes the following albums would be in this order: Sub Songs, The Super Songs, Suzy Music where on my iPod, the following albums would be placed in this order: Sub Songs, Suzy Music, The Super Songs lumping all "The" titles amongst the Ts.) Does anyone know why this sort feature is not the same on iPod AND iTunes? Please advise.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   14"

Sorting has become a complete mess. Though, it's quite logical from Apple to sort albums by ignoring the because it makes searching for albums a lot easier since there are numerous albums (and artists) beginning with that word.
But I guess that an answer to your question can only be given by an Apple engineer who makes iPod software.

  • Sorting albums by year doesn't work properly in new iTunes 11.

Sorting albums by year doesn't work properly in new iTunes 11.
    See the screenshots below.
There's a kind of albums. Double CD in one set. Queen "The Works" 1984, for example.
First CD is the original release and the second one is bonus CD for the original album's reissue in 2011.
iTunes 10 took year info from track 1 of CD1 for "sort album by year" function.
But new iTunes 11 takes the highest value of year in the album's track list.
Same things with additional bonus tracks for the album's reissues.
See the screenshot of Madonna "Like a Virgin" 1984 album.
So my collection is in a huge mess after last update to iTunes 11.
It's a big problem. And must be solved to the next update.

I noticed this too, and I think it gets even more complicated when you think about the difference between how you want Re-releases to be ordered: based upon the intial release year (like you have described above), and Compilations or Greatest Hits: where you want them to be sorted by when the albums were actually released. iTunes 11 seems to just grab the date of the most recently released song on an album. This worked fine for 2/3 of my Compilation albums, because they just happened to be released the same year as the latest song on each album.
Compilation example (released: 2003, latest song on album: 1969):
This is what I submitted to Apple as feedback:
This issue is actually aimed at  iTunes 11, but 10.6.3 is the most recent version number I could select in the drop-down menu.
As with normal albums, iTunes 11 puts a release year next to "Various Artists" in Albums > Expanded View (and also in the Songs and Genre Tabs). However, iTunes seems to produce this number by looking for the last released song on the album. This has worked fine for 2/3 of my compilations, but the third one is a 60s compilation released in 2003. It displays "1969" next to "Various Artists" and there are no tags available in Get Info to change this. This also happens to greatest hits collections.
When selecting View > View Options > "Artist" then "Year" in Album view, and View > View Options > "Year" in Artist and Genre view, the above issue causes compilations, greatest hits collections, and re-releases (Although users may want re-releases to be listed in order of original release) to be sorted in the wrong order.
Considering iTunes 11 has added this feature (in previous iTunes versions, "Year" would only appear next to individual tracks), it is a shame an "Album Year" or "Sort Album Year" hasn't been added to the Get Info options.
As is, the only solution I can think of is to change all track years to the release year of the album.
I imagine this might be a bit of an edge case, and not something the majority of iTunes users would care about, but then again, I could imagine a fair number of musicphiles wanting control over this metadata.

  • ITunes sorting albums in grid view

In the grid view, my library lists albums multiple times if there are various artists on the same album. I have tried to reset my view options (Sort Albums, By Title) but cannot "uncheck" the By Artist option. I am very irritated and at my wits end! Does anyone have a solution for this?

  • Added albums to iTunes, but they do not show up in the Music Library view.

I imported some albums and the albums do not show up in the Music Library view, however I created a playlist containing all songs added today and they show right up. Is there a fix for this?

They don't show up at all or they don't show up where you expect them to?
The iTunes Library is divided into a number of sources, Music, Podcasts, Books etc. Each file added ends up in just one of these sources depending on its *Media Kind* plus any playlists for which it has matching criteria.
Settings such as *Part of a Compilation, Sort Artist* or *Sort Album Artist* can make albums appear in an unexpected location within Music.

  • How can I copy albums from itunes to an SD card without splitting the tracks?

I've tried putting albums onto an SD card from itunes on my Macbook Pro by dragging & dropping, but all the tracks have been split up. When I access the SD card the tracks are mixed up and not grouped together in albums.
I've also tried to find my itunes files but unable to locate them using finder.
    Any help would be welcome.

When you have albums in iTunes the songs are organized because iTunes is a database.  When you copy the albums/tracks to an SD card (or any other location) they are just files, there is no database keeping them in order.  So the order you see on the SD card is whatever sorting order you have the Finder set for (or other program if you are using it).
The easiest way to ensure track files are in the desired order on a disk is to preface the track name with a sequence number ... so, for example, you rename Black Magic Woman as 01-Black Magic Woman, etc.
The location of your iTunes Library is normally users/yourusername/Music/iTunes ... and your actual media files (albums & songs) are in a subfolder named iTunes Music

  • How can I sort albums by album artist while keeping compilations together?

Argh, I'm getting a bit exasperated. Basically I just want to be able to scroll through cover flow and see all my albums with one cover representing each album, with all the compilations near the end under "V" for various. Surely most people would want to scroll through their albums in this way??
So I've gone through and added all the album artist info, which has worked fine for the artist albums. But for all the "Various" ones, instead of doing the logical thing and grouping them together by album, iTunes orders these all by track artist. There doesn't seem to be any secondary sort function..
I'm always defending Mac and Apple products for their logical applications and ease of use, and now I feel let down.. If there's a way around this please let me know! Thanks,
    Malinna

The trouble you're encountering is that iTunes sorts first by Album Artist, then by Artist. Thus, within each Album Artist, you'll get multiple Artist clumps.
You want to sort "Album by Artist". This will, first, strip out all your compilations and sort them to the end of your library, then sort using the hierarchy Album Artist (or Artist if there is none) > Album > Disc # > Track #. Click the Album column header until Album by Artist is displayed. (You can also choose Album by Year, which will sort albums chronologically within Album Artist.)
If you want to keep albums together, you'll need to sort on an Album column; other columns are bound to clump things by whatever you're sorting on.

  • Sort Artist and Sort Album tags don't update

Having spent a lot of time over the years getting the metadata in my iTunes library just right, I've noticed a frustrating problem when it comes to iTunes Match.
I make use of 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' tags so that my library is sorted by artist surname (eg. Lennon, John).
This always worked correctly when I syncronised my music via iTunes, but since switching over to iTunes Match this has become problematic.
When I initially signed up for iTunes Match, my Library moved over correctly - honouring the sort order tags that I had added. However, When I add NEW music to the library and subsequently change the sort tag, the change does not propegate to iTunes Match (Though it does appear correct in iTunes on my Mac). So the result is now a mixed sort order on my iOS devices - some by first name and some by second.
Under iOS 5.0 and iTunes 10 I used to be able to get around this with a little forethought - I would turn iTunes Match OFF on the Mac before adding any new songs, then I would edit the tags and then switch Match back on. This would rescan the library and add the new tracks to the cloud complete with correct metadata.
This workaround no longer works under iOS 6 and iTunes 11.
I have tried switching iTunes match off on my iPhone and restarting it. This does not work either.
Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way to 'force' the metadata to be updated?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I also am finding it impossible to convince my iPhone that the Album Sort field exists. This is especially odd considering when I view my Home Shared music from my iPhone, it works exactly correctly. I have verified that the tags are being uploaded to iTunes Match by viewing the songs from another computer that has iTunes Match. So, for some reason, iOS 6 will not sort by the Album Sort field when using iTunes Match music.
Does anyone have any sort of fix or workaround for this problem? I've submitted Feedback to Apple.

  • Sorting Albums in alphabetic order on iPad

I set up a set of Albums in iPhotos on my iMac. Later I added a new album and it went to the bottom of the list of albums on the left side of screen. I physically dragged that last album up among the other albums to put it in alpha order. All well and good.
Problem is when I sync my iPad, that last album doses not appear in alpha order
; it stays at bottom of group.
Please help me put this and future albums in alpha order. Thanks

My iPad 2 and iPhone 4 are on iOS 6.0.1 (was on iTunes 10.7, recently updated to 11) and most of my smart lists are sorted as in iTunes.  The ones that don't seem to be sorted correctly are those which are limited in size by number of songs (e.g. "Limit to 25 songs").  Playlists that are limited by capacity (e.g. "Limit to 500 MB") seem to have the same sort order as in iTunes.
I'm not sure if this matches your conditions, but if you have not done so already then try adding either of the criteria:
"Playlist is Music" (which is the general Music category, which can serve as a playlist name), or
    "Media Kind is Music"
See if either of those help you, and be sure to re-save the playlist's sort order in iTunes before syncing your iPad.

  • Sort Album by Artist/Year Not Working Correctly

For the Beatles, I have bought 3 albums from iTunes - Please Please Me, With the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour. For some reason, using the above sorting Magical Mystery Tour appears at the top of the list, despite the fact that the year field is correctly entered for all 3. There is no info in the 'Sort Year' field either. I have quite a good understanding of how the iTunes library works, but this has me baffled (and annoyed)

    dannycorker wrote:
It appears they are, although I refuse to believe this is the accepted behaviour - has no one else complained about this?
It could simply be a weakness is the way this was all designed. If you look at the information Gracenote uses, it's not unusual for all tracks on a 60's compilation album to be incorrectly listed as the same year, often the year the compilation was released. The same thing tends to happen with re-issued albums. That's down to whoever inputs the information into Gracenote for that album, often a bored record company employee.
First of all, you could try changing the year for each documentary to the year the album was produced and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you have to decide how to handle it.
    Accept it as it is.
Change the year for the documentary to the same year as the album and simply kid yourself that it's the correct year. (I'm not being flippant, but if the documentary is all footage from album release year, then "technically", the doumentary is from that 60's year.)
Leave the year of the documentary track blank, but put the year (2010) into the track's "Comments" field instead.
Propose a workable solution to Apple via Apple Feedback. (I am being a bit flippant now. Sorry, but you'll be in for a long wait before anything might change.)
Get Gracenote to change their text fields, get the people who input the information into Gracenote to do so correctly and then get Apple to change iTunes to recognise those changes. (Now I am being very flippant. Good luck with this one!) Oh! And hope Apple never decide to change from Gracenote to someone else!
Number 2 or 3 are probably your best bet.
