Sorting "All my files" in Finder

Hi, the "All my files" tab in Mountain Lion had the files sorted by type and, within those lines, by change date, making it pretty useful.
With Mavericks I get them sorted by type and the in alphabetical order by default, no matter when they were changed, making it pretty useless.
I can of course sort them by change date, but then they are not sorted by type any long, making it pretty ugly.
Am I the only one experiencing that problem? Is there a way to get them sorted by type and change date as it was in Mountain Lion?

Hello e-vitto
When in Finder go the the Gear drop down and click Show View Options or the drop down menu View > Show View Options. There you will have a pop up menu that will let you change the secondary sort field.

  • Can't access 'All My Files' in Finder

I'm not able to access 'All My Files' in Finder. The below screenshot error appears when selecting Go > All My Files.
On closer inspection, it appears the entire folder is empty, yet I can manually access files through Spotlight.
Any suggestions on what my cause this issue would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the "All My Files" Search Folder is damaged or missing.
Try going to Finder Preferences, Sidebar, and uncheck, then recheck All My Files.
Not sure that is going to work, but it would be the simplest solution.

Switch to the Finder app and open its preferences.
Remove the check mark on the items you don't want displayed in the Sidebar tab.
The originals are not removed from the machine.

  • How to See .zip Files in All My Files in Finder

Is there any way to tell All My Files to include .zip files?

Maybe I don't understand the question. When you save the file, you'll be asked to name the Folder and if you want to save it to the Sidebar. If you save it to the Sidebar as shown in the second screenshot, it creates a Smart Folder, which I named zip. So Save As: zip.  Whenever you want to find a zip file on your System, just look in Smart Folder in the Finder Sidebar

  • I have two HDs. How do I point All My Files in Finder to the second HD where my data files are?

I have a SSHD that has the OS and all apps. In finder All My Files points to it. How do I change it to look at my big, data HD?
    Thanks.

As I pointed, and esp. with an SSD, leave the home library on t he boot drive works great.
The sidebar can have whatever you want, maybe not the default pretty icon for the default folders, but folders, hdd etc that you drag onto the sidebar. Folders, not files.

  • Clicking "All my Files" in Finder causes Spinning Beach Ball / Pinwheel

When I open a new Finder window which defaults to "All My Files" or whenever I click on "All My Files" I get the spinning beach ball / pinwheel.
When the Finder becomes responsive again I notice that at the top of "All My Files" is the "Contacts" and "Calendar" items.  However, only two contacts out of hundreds show up and only one calendar event (from the beginning of the year) shows up.
In the system log I am seeing the following two line every time I click on "All My Files"

Any thoughts on resolving the issue?

Regarding the "Contacts" and "Calendar" items -- apparently those files were from saved attachments in the Downloads folder rather than coming from my Contacts address book or my Calendar.  I have deleted those -- I believe that was simply a red herring.
The error in the system.log persists every time I click on "All My Files"

I believe the problem must revolve around this.

  • Sorting folders and files in FINDER

I can sort folders and files alphabetically, chronologically, etc using LIST view, but not in any other view.
I seem to recall that FINDER used to sort alphabetically but now seems to sort randomly. I prefer to use the COLUMNS view.
In LIST view there are column headers NAME, DATE MODIFIED, SIZE, KIND and clicking on one will sort accordingly.
But these headers do not appear in the other views.

    Hi,
This can be done. If you want to arrange your files etc as columns...select "As Columns" from the "View" menu & then select "View Options" also from the "View" menu. It will then give you options as to how you wish to arrange your files etc.

  • All My Files in Finder - Problem

I am still a Mac newbie so please excuse me if this question has an obvious answer that I don't see.
I created an MP3 file using iRecord music and moved it into iTunes on my iMac. The file sits in one of the iTunes sub-folders.
My problem is that when I open Finder the All My Files smart folder does not display this MP3 file. For me to see this file in Finder I have to search for all MP3 files on my system.
Shouldn't All My Files find this file? How can I correct the way All My Files is searching?
    Any advice welcome. TIA
    Mark

I don't believe it shows anything that is inside either the iTunes Library or the iPhoto Library, or at least it doesn't on mine.
It may be designed that way because the system already has a browser for each of those items. I don't know.

  • What's the point of "All My Files" at Finder sidebar?

Just curious, because it seems useless, and even more because a search won't show folder path for selected items...

Not sure about this one; I certainly haven't figured out what its' purpose is supposed to be. I spent a little time on the support site - nothing; looked at all the "features" page - nothing; and then I found this:
    http://www.edibleapple.com/new-all-my-files-icon-in-os-x-lion-pays-homage-to-ste ve-jobs/
guess that answers both of our questions.....

  • Sorting folders before files in Finder

    Hi there!
Is it possible to have Finder to show all of my folders before the files?
I find it a little confusing to have folders and files mixed together but can't find any option to change the way they are arranged...
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks and Ciao!
    Sergio

    Try this:
In Finder goto View ang then to Show View Options. In there goto Keep Arranged By and in the dropdown under that, select Kind.
    Does that work for you?
Oops! forgot....at the top of the View Option window, you can check if it's for This Window or All Windows (I assume you want it for all)

  • "All My Files" won't open, crashes Finder

Every time I attempt to open the "All My Files" folder, finder crashes and I am unable to do anything on my computer without relaunching finder.
Anyone seen something like this happen or know a fix?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Why do certain Pages and Numbers files not appear in All My Files

I don't know if this is associated with Yosemite or not.  But some time ago, I noticed files I use a lot no longer show up in All My Files in Finder.  Whenever I want to open them I have to find them in Finder because they are no longer showing up as a recent file.
Any ideas why?  I can't find any settings that seem to influence this.
    TIA

Recent builds of iTunes seem to have an occasional problem where the main music section doesn't always list all the music that has been added to the library. Create a smart playlist with the name of one of the albums and you should find that the media is actually present. Often adding some more media seems to fix things. Downloading the iTunes Free Single of the Week has a good success rate.
Alternatively you could try closing iTunes, then removing the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes folder and restarting. This will cause iTunes to run a consistency check on the database which should sort out any anomalies.
BTW I had a clue from another thread that the "missing" tracks might be listed in the Unknown Artist/Unknown Album area at the bottom of the listings. Would you mind taking a look to see if you see the same?

  • All my files 'folder'?

I'm confused by the All My Files folder at the top of the Finder sidebar. It says 'all my files' but then doesn't actually seem to show results from all my files! Where exactly is it looking? For example, I can search for images in spotlight including the word 'edward' in the filename. It finds hundreds. However, in All My Files, it finds only 11. What's going on?
The thing is, this All My Files folder seems relatively exciting to me because it brings back the excellent, clear layout of the original Spotlight search (where things are clearly set out in file type 'sections' rather than a crazy long list which you then either have to add extra search criteria too, or sort or whatever (i.e. that's a faff)). However, it's not finding the things I'd like it to find when I click the 'All My Files' button on the top rail. But if I click 'This Mac' then it finds entirely irrelevant images.
Can anyone help me understand what's going on?
    Edward

    Thanks for your help.
I didn't delete the folder entity itself and my main question is whether there are prerequisite files inside a "All My Files" in any new MacBook Pro?
