Sorting / Arranging Songs

Hello, i hope someone can help with this query, i have a feeling it is a simple one but i am only a beginner.
In my library for example, i have 20 songs by Jimmy Barnes. 10 of which i have imported from various cd's and the other 10 are all from one entire cd. The 10 songs from the entire cd i have entered under the album name as well as the artist with the intention of just playing the album tracks, or all of the tracks by the artist.
What i am finding is that on my pod, i scroll to artist, click and only the 10 tracks from the entire cd appear, not the 10 that are not attached to an album name. These can be located via Songs menu, not artist. I am hoping to somehow have them arranged so that when i clck on Artist, i am able to see all tracks by the artist regardless of whether they are listed as an album name or not. Thanks if you can shed some light.

Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

I'm trying to arrange songs in a playlist to play in a certain order without having to permanently modify the tag information like track number. Can this be done?

This can be done by sorting on the leftmost column (with the numbers).
Then you can drag them at any position you want.
Shuffling for that playlist has to be off.

Just downloaded the newest version of software and I can't even sort by song or album??

Am I missing something?? I can no longer sort by song alpha or group albums. It's extremely difficult to search if I don't know the exact song title. Help!!!

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you want. Which view, exactly, are you trying to use? Almost certainly, you can do what you want...
In iTunes 11, I have the sidebar showing ('cos I prefer it), and :
although I have ringed Composers, this view of my Library is sorted by Song title.
And "group albums" by ...
title?
or artist?
If you can be more specific about your requirements, then perhaps we can give you better help.

Is there any way to sort my songs normally on the new nano?

I want to sort my songs by Artist, like this:

Is there any way to fix this?

btw I've found a workaround - to create a playlist with the order that I want, but it's harder to scroll through long playlists and it requires more actions every time I add a song, so please don't tell me to create a playlist.

I'm wondering if some of the playlist bugs from the Nano 5G have made their way into the 6G. One bug in particular is this: Create a smart playlist in iTunes and set it to sort any way you want (e.g., by artist). That sort order should be synced to the iPod. If you change it in iTunes and resync, the sort order on the Nano should reflect the sort order in iTunes. On the Nano 3G and my iPod classic, it is. On my Nano 5G, it is not. This is a known bug. It's actually a bit worse than that. The order on the 5G seems to always be by artist with a few "odd" songs thrown into the beginning of the playlist. If you always shuffle, it's not a big deal. I never shuffle.
I have been holding back on buying the new Nano until I can determine whether this and other playlist bugs have been fixed.

Is there a way to sort my songs by import dates? The options i have now is only to sort by names and artist. I want to be able to see the songs i added recently and also play in that order.

Yes. It's called Date Added. In Song view enable the column by pulling down View > View options and select "Date Added."

How to arrange songs on ipod shuffle the way I want them to be played

I just got an Ipod shuffle in India.....2 GB....I want the songs to be played in a particular order only the way I can do on MP3 players....How do I arrange songs the way I want them to be played serially?

If you have iOS 5 on the iPad then you can create new albums directly on the iPad - you should get an Edit button at the top of the Albums screen in the Photos app. That will allow you create and 'copy' photos into those new albums (you can't copy photos into synced albums), but you can't delete the original photo - if you do delete it then all copies of it that you've put in other albums will also be deleted. I don't think that the total number of photos increases on the iPad when you copy photos into new albums, so I think that you effectively just creating pointers to them in those new albums, so if you delete the original photos on the iPad then all pointers to it will also be deleted.

It's not clear from your post, but you do realise
that if you import a cd as a compilation, it will not
appear under artists? This is done to save the iPod
being cluttered up with single artists entries who
might have only one song listed.
I wasn't aware of that. It's true that I haven't been using the "compilation" tag for a long time. I've only started using it with iTunes 7 as otherwise with Coverflow I would have one album cover for each artist in a compilation. Before that my compilations weren't tagged as such as that is quite probably why each artist from compilations showed up when browsing by artists.

Is it possible to sort the songs which won't play and have an exclamation sign against them.
I have just upgraded to Windows 7 which may have caused the problem as they played ok before.

Lost & Found playlists
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.
If the files still exist on the computer my FindTracks script may be able to help reconnect iTunes to them.

How can I get iPod touch with IOS5 to sort by song artist and not album artist?

Since updating to IOS5 many song artist are missing. I set up iTunes to sort on song artist but when I sync, my ipod tyrs to sort by album artist not song artist. How can I get the ipod touch to sort by song artist???? Most of my Song artists show up under Various which is the entry for album artist. Please help! I have aver 9000 songs with this problem. If I can't solve this issue, I will have to return to using my Toshiba Gigabeat which allows me to sort be album artist. IOS-5 was a step backwards.

Go to settings.
Music> Turn off Group by Artist

The tip below can also be use straight off in iTunes.
First you create a playlist (not Smart Playlist).
Drag in a couple of songs/videos you want for your devices into the list.
Select your playlist under PLAYLISTS on the iTunes left panel.
Click the top left column above the 1,2,3..., it is the column left of Name. (You will see ascending or descending arrow head)
Arrange the list content the way you want it by dragging the songs/video in the list up or down.
Select your device under DEVICE on the left panel in iTunes.
Select Music tab and make sure your new playlist is included for Syncing
Sync.

Can I sort all songs by artist in iPod/iPad's iOS 5?

I have not seen this addressed yet. If it has been, point me in the right direction and I'll be on my way.
As with the former iteration of the iPod (now Music) player on the iPad, you can show Songs, alphabetized by the song title. You can also open a folder view of the Artists, which means you can only see the songs by that artist.
I want to be able to sort ALL songs by artist. Just like in iTunes on my computer.
Let's say I have Elbow and Electronic in my library. Elbow immediately precedes Electronic in an alphabetical list of artists in my library. If I want to listen to all songs by, say, Elbow and then have it play all songs by Electronic, that should be relatively straight forward. I can do it in iTunes, of course.
I assume I could create a new smart playlist that is that is the combination of my other iPad playlists, sort that by artist, and then play from there, but that is a really silly, unnecessary workaround for a simple issue.

Actually, JinKL, doing a search from "Songs" is harder to do and does not give the exact same result. It's harder to do because I have to key an artist's name rather than pick one from a list. The results aren't the same for several reasons. If you key an artist name that matches a song, you get that song, too. OK, that doesn't happen THAT much, but it does happen. And if I key a partial name, say "Morrison" for "Van Morrison", I get all the songs on "Morrison Hotel" by the Doors.
"All Songs" should be added to the iPad music player. While they're at it, they should add column titles and allow allow sorting on the column values.

I would like to go into my Artists section and then sort the songs by RATINGS....

There is no longer any way to SORT MY SONGS... It only sorts the albums. which I RARELY rate.
I should be able to go into Artists... type the name of my favorite artist in... Nirvana for example. Then SORT BY RATING. Now I am seeing all my favorite songs, IN ORDER by my favorite band. This is the BEST way to isolate your favorite songs on an album. Otherwise I have to create a playlist for EVERY SINGLE ALBUM. Pain in the ***... PLEASE put the functionality of SORT BY RATING, DATE, ETC... back into Albums, Artists, Playlists...Genres... etc... it makes functionality of findins, selecting and sorting your music FAR MORE POWERFUL. I KNOW there are internal conflicts at Apple about this. Please put it back.

Same way it works with any computer...when you delete something, the data isn't actually deleted, just the pointers to the data. As you use your device, the data gets overwritten, since the iOS views it as "free" space..
If you want the data truly gone, you need to erase your phone. Same way it works on any computer.

Arranging Song Order - Zen Nano P

When I put my music into folders on my Nano it arranges them alphebetically and I don't see a way to change the track number (the way I arrange song order on my Nomad). I would like them in the order I am used to hearing them on the cd.

i read the faq and i'm having the same problem. i downloaded the media software from the website but i noticed it didn't include the media explorer. does just the cd software that came with the player contain it's i'm a little fustrated. does anybody have anymore input.

Besides using "View Options", how do you arrange songs within a playlist into a personal preference sequence?
I've tried dragging songs around within a playlist to put them in an order that I prefer, but they wont move outside an order combination defined in "View Options". I've also tried turning off the shuffle option as suggested in a separate post, but this did not work.

OK, just click on the first unnamed column where it shows 1,2,3,etc.
Now you should be able to drag them around how you want.

At first I didn't understand your reply; I didn't know about the additional audio controls (that are hidden by default) or that there was a Shuffle icon in them. I had only seen the Shuffle choice at the top of the playlist. I think shuffle must have been turned on by default; I didn't turn it on. I found that it's not necessary to turn on Repeat in the Now Playing screen to turn off shuffling, though.
So if other readers have this problem, do this:
Play a song in your playlist.
Tap the display once in the Now Playing screen (it's either the album artwork or the default graphic) to display the additional audio controls.
Tap the the Shuffle icon on the right if it's blue (indicating shuffle is turned on). It will turn gray (indicating shuffle is turned off).
Your playlist will now play in order.
