Sorting: "Artist by Album" ??

Hi there, ...
I'm currently running iTunes using the CoverFlow view and the sorting "Album by Artist"! Now, when I quickly want to jump to another band using the keyboard letter (e.g. I want to jump to FOO FIGHTERS, so I hit the F to go near there) it does of course react wrong, as the "Album by Artist" sorting does jump to the next album starting with the letter F instead to the artist!
Now, when I select the sorting "Artist", this issue will work fine of course - but, I don't like to see all the compilation artists splitted up into the Library - as I CoverFlow I will have the same artwork like 20 times!
Feature Request: Is there any chance to get e.g. a sorting named "Artist by Album", which is organizing the music in the same way as "Album by Artist" does ... but the shortcuts will lead to the artist instead to the album ..(?)
Phew ... I hope somebody will get what I mean
Best, T.MOW

Hi!
I totally get what you mean, and I have EXACTLY the same problem! Please someone, is there a soulution? Or is the "Artist by Album"-feature planned for the next iTunes update?
This is so so SO anoying!!

  • ITunes 12 sorting artists and albums wrong/out of order

    Hi,
So I'm using iTunes 12, though this problem occurred with 11 too...
As you can see in the image, I'm using Mac DeMarco as an example, it happens with selected other artists too. I have two albums of his, yet they don't appear together and there are multiple instances of the artist. Even the albums don't appear together. Both of them have the same "Artist" and "Album Artist" information.
Here you can see one instance:
Here's the second instance. Note, the artist appears amongst the "D" artists, after Deftones for some reason, instead of "M" with the other album:
What is going on? Please help.

Enable the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist columns, chances are that the fields have been set inconsistently.

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • How to sort songs by Album artist and song number?

    System: +OS X 10.5 updated to 10.5.2 . iTunes 7.6+
I have a CD "+Cafe Del Mar - Volume 01+". Added songs to Library. Every track has different Artist. So, I have 12 songs with individual Name and Artist. Then have put value "+Volume 01+" as Album in File Info and Album Artist as "+Cafe Del Mar+". This way songs are automatically grouped together whenever I sort my library by Album or Album Artist.
Unfortunately in latter case (sorting by Album Artist) iTunes uses Artist field instead of Song Number within the Album to sort tracks. Here are links to screenshots I made to show what we are talking about here:
    Sorting by Album: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7783/picture1qj6.jpg
    Sorting by Album Artist: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/4199/picture2uo9.jpg
How can I fix it and make iTunes to sort by Track Number within the same album even if I sort things by Album Artist?
    Thanks.

How to use iTunes 7 new Album Artist field
Mon, Sep 18 '06 at 7:30AM PDT • Submitted by stevebr
iTunes 7 thinks of an album by a performer (call the performer XYZ), where one or more tracks are by "XYZ featuring ABC" or "XYZ and ABC," as separate albums. In the past, the only workaround was to set the album as a compilation to avoid this, but this is an incomplete solution, and it had the side effect of the album not being classified or filed properly.
Enter the "Album Artist" tag in iTunes 7. Set this tag (via Get Info with all all tracks of the album selected) to the main artist's name, and the album will be unified.

  • Why does my new iPod touch sort music by album artist, instead of song artist?

I recently go an iPod touch 4th Gen. My old iPod sorted music by song artist, but the new one sorts it by album artist. My problem is this: There is an album called Re:generation. It was a project in which 5 DJs each made 2 songs for the album. So I enter the info for each song, but my iPod sorts it by album artist, which is listed as "Re:generation". I wanted the songs to be sorted by the 5 artists that actually made the songs, so there would be 2 songs under 5 different artists. If I wanted to listen to the whole album, I could press the album tab, scroll down to "Re:generation" and play the whole album. This all worked fine on my old iPod, but now it doesn't.
My first solution was to change the album artist on each song to the artist that created that song. But then by iPod list 5 different albums, so I can't listen to the album as a whole if I wanted to. My next solution was to erase the album artist info  for each song, but now none of the ten songs can be found under the artist tab. I have to go over to the album and pick which song I want to hear.
If you don't understand, here's an example. 2 of the songs on the Re:generation album are by Pretty Lights. I want to be able to select Pretty Lights under the artist tab, choose all songs, shuffle, and have those 2 songs play at some point. But I would also like to be able to got to the album tag, select Re:generation, and play all 10 songs in order. However, the new setup won't allow me to do this.
So I'm wondering if I can fix the problem by somehow editing the iPod's sort settings (if possible), or reverting back to the old system (if possible), and why Apple even changed the system in the first place. It seems pretty stupid to me, and I honestly see no reason to change what I thought was a perfect system.

wow, i really don't have time to read all that, but i'll give you an hint when you're in music library click "More" and then "Composers" i think that's what you're lookin for otherwise just ignore it

  • How Can I put an Artists Live Albums in a separate folder, so they sort by "Concert Date" in iTunes and do not "intermingle" so to speak with Studio Albums?  Is this possible?

How Can I put an Artists Live Albums in a separate folder, so they sort by "Concert Date" in iTunes and do not "intermingle" so to speak with Studio Albums?  Is this possible?
That is about the best way I can phrase my question.
I put year/month/date at the beginning of a show, hoping for them to sort by date and I get mixed results.
Would creating a Folder within the Artists' existing folder  that said "Pearl Jam Live", inside the "Pearl Jam" folder in iTunes Media help this "Date Sorting Issue"?
    Thank you.

Or is there a way to go through aperture to make a new reference library that I can move the masters into later?
you do not move the masters into a references library - you turn your current library into a referenced library.  As Terence Devlin said:
    File -> Relocate Masters
    What you should set up:
Select a folder, where you want to store your referenced files - probably on an external drive.
Decide on a hierarchical folder structure inside this folder - that is completely up to you.
Select a project from your library and use the command "File -> Relocate Masters/Originals" to move the original image files to the folder where you want to go them to. Only take care not to send two projects to the same folder.
Alternatively, if you do not care about the folder structure Aperture will use, select all images at once from the "Photos" view and let Aperture decide how to assing the folders - in the "Relocate Originals" dialoge you can specify a subfolder format.

  • Sorting music by "Album by Artist / Year" on iPod touch (3rd gen.)

    Hello there,
In my music library, I have plenty of discographies per artist (eg. Bob Dylan's, Coldplay's etc...), and am finding a bit of a pain to sort it the way I want it on my iPod.
I've synced my new iPad with iTunes and copied all the music across, and when I look through the music on the iPad and select an artist, each of their albums are ordered by the year they were released in (and this happened automatically). I find this a much better way of sorting music to how I did it previously (i.e. each album ordered alphabetically).
Now, my question: How the heck do I get my iPod touch to do this?
On iTunes, I figured out you can sort the iTunes library in this way by selecting an artist in grid view, then clicking "Album by Title" above the column with album artwork and changing it to "Album by Artist / Year", however this only works for that specific artist's albums - to get your iTunes library to sort all albums this way you seemingly have to do this for each artist. Is there any way to make my whole library sort music this way without having to do that?
Essentially, how can I get my iPod to sort music the way my iPad does?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • With IOS 7, the coverflow screen sorts strictly by album title.  How do I get sorting by artist then by title, the way it was in IOS 6 and earlier?

There seems to be no way in IOS 7 to see a list of the album titles for an artist.  The "coverflow" screen sorts just by album title, without regard for Artist, where in IOS 6 and before it sorted by artist (primary key) and then album title (secondary key).
Also, in IOS 6 and before, under the Artist search, selecting an Artist gave you a list of the album titles for that artist, then you could select the album you were interested in (or wanted to shuffle play).  But in IOS 7, the Artist search gives you a list of ALLsongs for that Artist.  There is no overview list of just album titles, and no way to shuffle just one album from that screen.  Both IOS 6 and 7 allow one to shuffle all songs for the Artist.
How do I get back the Artist/Abums sorting or grouping, either ijn Coverflow or in the Artist search?
    Thanks,
    Rainer in Waltham

The large text size makes your post almost impossible to read.
Excessive use of bold or capitals (also) makes posts difficult to read.
You can drag most of the column headings left or right, or right-click on the header to turn columns on or off.
Once you've used File > Display Duplicates or Shift > File > Display Exact Duplicates you can use File > Display All or the Display All button at the bottom of the list to restore the display.

  • Sort Artist and Sort Album tags don't update

Having spent a lot of time over the years getting the metadata in my iTunes library just right, I've noticed a frustrating problem when it comes to iTunes Match.
I make use of 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' tags so that my library is sorted by artist surname (eg. Lennon, John).
This always worked correctly when I syncronised my music via iTunes, but since switching over to iTunes Match this has become problematic.
When I initially signed up for iTunes Match, my Library moved over correctly - honouring the sort order tags that I had added. However, When I add NEW music to the library and subsequently change the sort tag, the change does not propegate to iTunes Match (Though it does appear correct in iTunes on my Mac). So the result is now a mixed sort order on my iOS devices - some by first name and some by second.
Under iOS 5.0 and iTunes 10 I used to be able to get around this with a little forethought - I would turn iTunes Match OFF on the Mac before adding any new songs, then I would edit the tags and then switch Match back on. This would rescan the library and add the new tracks to the cloud complete with correct metadata.
This workaround no longer works under iOS 6 and iTunes 11.
I have tried switching iTunes match off on my iPhone and restarting it. This does not work either.
Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way to 'force' the metadata to be updated?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I also am finding it impossible to convince my iPhone that the Album Sort field exists. This is especially odd considering when I view my Home Shared music from my iPhone, it works exactly correctly. I have verified that the tags are being uploaded to iTunes Match by viewing the songs from another computer that has iTunes Match. So, for some reason, iOS 6 will not sort by the Album Sort field when using iTunes Match music.
Does anyone have any sort of fix or workaround for this problem? I've submitted Feedback to Apple.

  • How do I sort by artist, by album, by year

In iTunes 10, I sorted everything by artist, by album, by year (release date). I can't do that in iTunes 11 or I can't figure out how to do it. Grrrrrrrr Why do they break things?

    Cpel1000 wrote:
Very simply (I just figured it out with a little help, so I'll pass it on to you)...Simply go to the VIEW option on the menu bar (show Menu Bar if not showing from upper left corner) and select VIEW OPTIONS and then select Artist in the 1st box, and YEAR in the 2nd.  That will do it!  Easy enough, new iTunes 11 is fantastic.
That doesn't work. Checking those boxes just determines the columns that will appear. The sort order is determined by the pop up at the top. And with that you choose only a single criteria for sorting.

  • Track sorting in iTunes 9 -- Album by Artist and Album by Year mix disc #s

Here's a weird one I just noticed: on iTunes 8, if you selected to sort by Album, Album by Artist, or Album by Year, the tracks within each album would be sorted properly (all songs from disc 1 in order, followed by all songs from disc 2 in order, etc.).
On iTunes 9, this works fine for Album sort, but if you choose Album by Artist or Album by Year, it essentially ignores the disc numbers and sorts everything by track number (all track #1's, regardless of disc, followed by all track #2's).
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm using iTunes 9 for 64-bit Vista. Is there any work-around or way to get things sorting properly?

I am having the same problem! I just got off the phone with Apple Care and they were of little help. First, he denied ever hearing of this issue on a Mac (as I use) saying it was only an issue for PC users. I am proof that you are wrong, sir. Second, he denied that it was a bug and said Apple is not treating this as a bug (great...). He says it happened because the multi-disc import occurred in iTunes 8. I know this is incorrect because these same discs were imported using iTunes 7 and made the jump to iTunes 8 without a problem. They are in total denial on this one!
Ultimately, he said to try re-importing my entire library. This will be a huge pain as I have over 25k songs! So, if anyone tries this, please let us know if it works. I tried deleting just the single multi-disc album and then re-"Add to Library" with no luck, so I doubt blowing up my entire library would have a different result. Their other "solution" was to completely uninstall iTunes, then download and reinstall and re-import. This seems like a lot of work with no guarantee of success.
    How disappointing!

  • When sorting library as "Album by Artist," an album is out of order

This is really insignificant, I know, but it's bizarre, and I can't figure out why it's happening.
On one specific album, out of 1370, when I sort my library as Album by Artist or Album by Year, a single track is out of order. It is track 12, but appears at the end, after track 14. No matter what I put as the track number for that track, it will always be placed at the end of the album. It is not labeled as a different disc, album, or album artist, or as part of a compilation, nothing is misprinted, and near as I can tell, the track's info is completely consistent with the rest of the album. I even deleted all the track info for the whole album and manually filled it back in, and it still appears out of order. The tracks DO appear in the correct order when I only sort by album.
What exactly is going on here? Is this some sort of bug, or is there some data in the track I haven't thought of that will always cause it to appear at the end of the album when sorting as I do?
    Message was edited by: Rollersnake

OK, putting something in the Album Artist field for the album fixed it.
Near as I can tell, the track info for the album was inconsistent when I downloaded it, and though I deleted the "album artist" field for the whole album, more than once even, it somehow still registered as being different for that one track. Now when I delete the field for the whole album, it stays in order regardless of sorting method.

  • Sort album by artist or album by artist/year & compliations behavior

    I am running iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Windows 7 (64-bit)
I was wondering about the behavior of sort album by artist or album by artist/year. Instead of sorting solely by artist or artist/year, it seems to take into account album artist. Is this correct? Previous versions of iTunes (iTunes 7 and iTunes 8) used only the album and artist field not album artist. Is there anyway to force it to sort solely by artist and ignore album artist?
I am wondering because I currently use the album artist field to hold information about featured artists, featured instrumentalists, conductors, alternative band names, etc and reserve the artist field to describe the more generalized album artist. For me, this organizational scheme works better because my iPod does not feature offer any access to album artist. My current solutions are to roll back to iTunes 7 or 8 or change the sort album artist field for every entry which has information in the album artist field; neither of which are long term solutions.
Finally, I would like to group compliations (musical soundtracks, movie soundtracks, etc) where the artist might differ by album but still use the sort by album by artist to organize the rest of my music using List View. Is this possible?
I really wish iTunes provided more options for sorting music.
    Thanks!

Album Artist has been supported since iTunes 7 (7.1 I think) and normally takes preference over Artist when it comes to grouping tracks in iTunes. As you say the iPod Classic doesn't work quite the same way. You'll find my extensive thoughts on fixing things at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp You might find that different vlaues of Group Compilations and Use Album Artists restore the view you were familiar with, otherwise it might be time to rethink the strategy.
If it is simply a mattter of swapping Album Artist with Artist then I can (and will) rustle up a script for that... It will end up on the list at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp shortly. More complex rearrangements of properties are also possibe once you know what you want to achieve.

  • Sorting Individual Artists by Album by Year

I have a question about how to define how iTunes should sort songs. Currently, I use GRID VIEW to sort songs by artist, giving me the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture2-2.png
Then I have the next section organized with GRID VIEW as well, giving me the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture1-2.png
My question is when in this view, how do I tell iTunes to organize every one of these grids, which is the entire works of a particular artist, by ALBUM BY YEAR in an ascending fashion. You will notice that the second picture is organized in this fashion already, but if I were to return to the grid of artists and click on the same artist again it would revert to the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture3-2.png
As you can see this is not the same view at all, and it is quite frustrating to CONSTANTLY have to tell iTunes to sort the artists by ALBUM BY YEAR. Is there someway I can have iTunes automatically define sorting in this way? Interesting enough not every artist will be sorted in the same fashion as this one (the third picture), indicating to me that there is some way to set the presets for sorting. However, in no case will the sorting technique that I indicate be "saved" for the next time I open that artist. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time.

Use the "Option" key when clicking on a sort button in grid view to get additional options.
