Sorting "artist" by last name

How do I sort artists by last name, i.e. Davis, Miles rather than Miles Davis?

I don't believe this issue is resolved. I believe it is a fundamental flaw in the iPod. If I'm look for a Frank Zappa song, iPod sorts it so that it's filed under "F" for Frank. Blech. The problem is, iPod does not have artist first and last name fields, just "Artist".
So the solution proposed above does work, but man, what a pain.
In the case above, an alternative (and quicker?) solution is to change the Artist Name sort field to "Davis" or "Davis, Miles" click OK, then click apply Artist sort to all songs by this artist, which iPod will do gracefully. But, man, with over 3,000 songs and who knows how many hundreds of Artists, Albums, and individual cuts, what an arduous process!
The fix is to have first and last name fields or to get "smart" and recognize a space between names so that an algorithm could be written to sort properly. Of course in that scenario, doing a mass conversion, "Led Zeppelin" would be filed as "Zeppelin, Led". Argh. (File as Zep).

For individual songs, Get Info has a sort field.  If you have a lot of songs, it will still be a lot of work to get caught up, though.

  • ITunes Won't Sort Some Artists By Last Name

I have recently decided to sort my artists by last name on my Macbook, using "Sort Artist" and "Sort Album Artist" in the sorting columns of iTunes.  This has worked fine for all artists, except two of them.  For instance, my Brian Wilson collection will not move and remains sorted by B instead of W.  The only way I can move it to W is if I change the "Album Artist" to a different name in the info section.  So, if I changed it to, say, "Brian Wilson 2" or some variation, it moves.  But when I change it back to Brian Wilson, it keeps reverting to sorting by first name. Of course, this is unpractical.  I deleted and reimported my entire Wilson collection, and it still didn't make a difference.
Strangely, on my iMac, I do not have this problem and everything sorts perfectly.  I am an iTunes Match subscriber and thought perhaps that was messing with things, but the problem still persists with it off.  So if there's any suggestions to what's going on, that'd be great.
    Thanks!

I have this problem too, and I get around it by adding a middle name -  so Franz Schubert became Franz Peter Schubert
It's not ideal, but there is not fix that I can find.

  • How do I sort by employee last name when grouped by employee id?

    Hi,
The first Group is: Employee ID.
The second Group is: Employee Last Name.
I wish to sort the entire report by Employee Last Name; however, standard crystal reports sorting functionality doesn't present me with this ability. As a result, the report is sorted by Employee ID.
Can someone help me how to sort by Employee Last Name in this scenario?
    thx,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
When you create a Group in the report, Crystal reports automatically adds the grouped fields in the Sort list which unfortunately cannot be removed! You cannot change the priority of the sort fields too, and the only way of achieving this is by actually changing the group order. But it wouldn't help the purpose.
As a workaround, here's what you can do though:
    1) Create a command object and provide a pre-sorted result set to Crystal Reports. In this situation you would probably create a command object like :
select Emp_ID, Last_Name from Emp order by Last_Name asc
    2) Create the 2 groups in the report again. Open the 'Group Expert', click on the first group and then click 'Options'
    3) The Sort order for this group would be 'in ascending order' by default. Change it to 'in original order'
    4) Repeat the above step for the next group
This is the only way I know of sorting a report on another field.
Let me know how this goes!

  • Contacts sorted by phonetic last name

When I enter a phonetic last name for a contact, that contact is then alphabetized by the phonetic name, not the real name. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem, maybe I can provide more details.
When creating a new contact, in "Additional fields" there is for example "Phonectic first name" and "Phonetic last name". This would be used if a name is pronounced differently than how it is written or if a name is difficult to pronounce one could put in an easier name here.
My contacts are sorted by last name. Now for example I enter the following new contact:
First name: Margaret / Last Name: Baumann / Phonetic first Name: Grit
Now, my contacts under "B" look as below. Sorted correctly by last name, Bauman Margaret should be 2nd from the top, but she is last in the list, after Ben... and Ber... (the ... are only for anonymizing purposes)
    Bar... M...
    Bau... R...
    Bau... W...
    Ben... B...
    Ben... F...
    Ber... P...
    Baumann Margrit
If I remove the phonetic first name, the contact is shown correctly as 2nd from the top.

  • My iTunes Library is arranged with Artist as "Last Name, First Name"

So John Mayer songs have the artist field as "Mayer, John" (without quotes). I have a large physical CD collection arranged this way and it is the way I think. I have 10K+ songs tagged this way (although it doesn't impact a band name like The Beatles.)
Can I use iTunes Match successfully with the artist tags "backwards"? Will using the Match change the meta-data, if I download and replace? Most of my library is at 128K or 196K and I would like to upgrade matched songs to 256K.
I have searched this topic and found general assurances that meta-data does not change, but is that still true for a tag as basic as Artist Name?

Just as an aside, do you have your artists tagged like that for sorting purposes?
If so then it may be worth having a look at the "sort artist" field (under the sorting tag of get info.
In this way, you can have it displaying as John Mayer but sorting as Mayer John. As someone who had previously tried all sorts of sorting methods, this was just about the best discovery that I made about iTunes.
Apologies if you already knew this, or have some other reason for tagging that way, but I've been surprised by the number of people who aren't aware of this.

  • Sort contacts by last name, not phonetic last name

When I try to sort my Contacts by "Last, First", iOS (version 5 on iPhone 4) actually sorts them by Phonetic last name, then phonetic first name. I have populated the Phonetic names of some people with deceptive name spellings so I can voice dial them, but obviously want them to sort by their actual listed spelling—silent letters and all. Is there a way to work around this problem or is this an Apple bug.

Basic searches for "sort phonetic iphone" turn up LOADS of gripes about the downside of using the phonetic fields (non-alphabetized sorting) which almost certainly outweigh the benefits of same field's use.
Look at these ARCHIVED discussions (TONS of views, no fixes replied with) on Apple's own support forums from YEARS ago. Why hasn't this obvious BUG been addressed in years worth of updates? Come on Apple!
Address Book Alphabetizes Names by Phonetic Spelling
201 Views 0 Replies Latest reply: Feb 1, 2009 2:04 PM by Merged Content 1
When entering a phonetic spelling in Address Book for a Contact's name that is hard to pronounce, Address Book files that Contact by the phonetic spelling instead of their real name. It is very odd to file Contacts this way; most people look up someone's name by the way it is spelled. It is too difficult to remember letters used to aid pronunciation when looking it up. For example, a common Vietnamese name 'Nguyen' is actually pronounced 'wen'. If I enter 'wen' in the phonetic spelling field, I will have to remember to look up Mr. Nguyen under 'W'.
Filing under the contact's real name would be best, but an option could be at least allowing a choice between the real and phonetic name; just like the choice of filing by 'Company' or 'Contact' that Address Book currently has.
Anyone figured a work around for this? I sent Apple feedback on the problem, but it hasn't changed in 3 years.
Address book -- turn off phonetic sorting?

In order to make better use of the iPhone 3GS voice control dialing feature, I have add phonetic representations for some of my contacts. However, when I do this I noticed that the address app sorts these contacts by their phonetic spelling. (For instance the name 'Zhou' is pronounced 'Jo', and is sorted under the letter J).
This seems kind of weird default behavior and should at least be configurable. Anyone know some way to do this?

  • Sorting Contacts by Last Name on DROID 2 Global

I have not been able to find a way to sort my contacts by last name then first. My contacts are downloaded from my exchange server.  Within my Outlook client they are sorted by Last name.  Is there a fix for this?

For the droid2, unfortunately not that I know of. The custom contacts manager that Motorola added to the D2 doesn't support sorting by last name.
Until Android 2.2 the Android OS didn't support it at all. In the 2.2 update that was provided an option for this was added, but with Motorola providing a "custom version" of the contacts manager, this option never made it in.
    Sorry.

  • Syncing artists alphabetically by last name on Apple TV

Until I updated my Apple TV software all my music artists would be displayed alphabetically by last name according to the sort on iTunes. Since the update most, but not all artists, are synced with iTunes. The exceptions are displayed on Apple TV alphabetically by first name, for example Aimee Mann is displayed under “A” instead of “M” although it is displayed in iTunes under “M”. Despite repeated attempts to sort the artist by last name in iTunes it is still not displayed by the last name on Apple TV. I would estimate that about 5% of my artists are not synced on Apple TV by their last name. Before the Apple TV update all artists were displayed by last name. Is there something I can do beyond restoring my Apple TV to the original factory settings?

With the most recent Apple TV update this problem was resolved.
