Sorting books by author

How can you sort iBooks library by author last name?

It's not the first time that iTunes and Apple devices have used tag fields inconsistently...
To make sense of the Authors layout, for each book set:
Name=Album
Sort Name=Sort Album (by default leading articles are omitted)
Artist=Album Artist=Composer
Sort Artist=Sort Album Artist=Sort Composer (use Surname, Forename/Initials if you want to sort by surname)
If you want titles by the same author listed in series order then set the sort name/album to something like <Series Name> <Index> where index is, if necessary, padded with a leading zero. This will also affect the order when listed in Title order but that works for me. Essentially you get individual tiles listed alphabetically and series grouped together under the name of the series with the books in issue order.
Here are some screenshots to show what I mean...
While experimenting I found that I sometimes needed to completely remove the content I was trying to change from the device before syncing it back again for all my adjustments to take hold.
For general tips on organizing with iTunes see Grouping tracks into albums.

Can I sort books by Author in iBooks?

For sure. That is a life saver for me till I get a Sort by Author option on the Right Most menu. Currently when I need to find a book by its author I click the middle selection which does not sort books by the Author but gives me the option to see all the books by each author in my Library. Thing is I can not organize me Book Rack sorted by the author. I can organize it by the Title. Or I can organize it Manually, now that is a huge job. Not worth the time it will consume.
    Many thanks for your attention.
Hoping Apple will give us "Sort by Author" option in the right-most button and the Sort option in the View menu; along with the existing Purchases, Title and Manual options.

  • Is there a way to sort books by Author/Series?

    Hi All!
I have several Authors that have books in several Series.  Is there a way to sort the books in iBooks by Author AND Series, instead of alphanumberically, so that I can find books in a Series, in the order that they were written?  The only way, so far, that I've been able to do this is to add 1, 2, 3 etc before the title of the book, so that they come out in order, but to me this is an inelegant way to fix this.
    Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Unfortunately, there isn't.  I found iBooks so limited and painful to use that I finally uninstalled it and went back to iTunes to manage my ebooks.
I posted this to another thread earlier, summarizing what I'd learned here and out on the web in general:
When iBooks is uninstalled, the books icon will automatically reappear in the iTunes library menu and you can now add ebook files to iTunes and sync them easily with your pad or phone iBooks apps, just like it worked pre-iBooks for Mac.
To uninstall iBooks on Mac, open Terminal (It's in the Utilities folder in Applications) and type the following on the command line:
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iBooks.app
    Double-check your typing.  Press Enter.
You may be prompted for your system password - Type that in and press Enter.  iBooks is now gone from your Mac.  If the iBooks icon is still on the dock, it can be manually deleted.
    The iBooks files are in:
    /Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books
The 'Containers' folder was hard to find - I think it's a hidden file.  I found it using MacKeeper's disc usage utility and deleted the books from there.
iTunes doesn't have a series filter in its metadata editor, but you could use the Comments or Grouping filter to name the series and the track # or disc # filter to order them.

  • Can't sort books by genre in itunes 11?

Hey guys, I just found out that I can't sort my ebooks by genre in iTunes 11 anymore. There is audiobooks, books, pdf, author and list in the bar above all the books. Is there something I missed, or is there a way to get genre back to itunes? I would hate to know that this is one of changes that makes new itunes simple and easy to use... Thanks.

If you click on LIST and then Menu View > View options, you will be able to choose which columns to see in the list view. The Heading for "Genre" now seems to be "Category".

  • I can't search for books or authors on my iphone 6. It says no results found every time. Is there some setting I may have wrong? I have been using my kindle app instead.

I can't search for book or authors in ibooks.  When I search an author or book and click on it a message that says not results found comes up.  Even if I try to look up something popular like Dracula or Twilight.  Is there some setting I should have clicked?  It won't find or download any books at all anymore.  This started about a month ago.  I have been using my Kindle app instead.

    Hi laurieg23,
I see that you are having issues with your connection to the iBooks Store. Here is an article with some troubleshooting steps that will be relevant to your issue, even though the article was written for issues with the iTunes Store:
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update(iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.
If the issue persists, try troubleshooting your Wi-Fi networks and connections.

  • HT204365 how can I print a list of books and authors in my iBooks listing

can / how can I print off a list of books and authors in my iBooks listing

  • How do I sort books into categories

Can anyone tell me how to sort books into categories on my IPad?  Thanks!

If this is in the iBooks app then you should be able to create new collection via the Collections button at the top of the bookshelf, and you can then move books into collections via the Edit button at the top right of the bookshelf (that should let you select books and then move them)

  • How do I sort books in series order?

I have several books by the same author (20+).
These are in three series (and sub series)
The library sorts by AUTHOR just fine, but then puts the books in ALPHABETICAL order.
The SERIES order in not ALPHABETICAL.
The last (latest) book starts with "A", but the first one starts with an "O"
Is there a way to change this?
Can I change the file name and add a NUMBER in front of the name to force a sort?
    Thank you in advance.

I asked the same question a couple of months ago ("niceto have...") - no reply
The best I came up with was sortingby publication date - at least that gets them in the right order if not in series / sequence order.
The alternative is a pain - down load them in series order then sort by download date.

  • When in the bookstore, can you sort books by release date

Often times find an author and ey have multiple books, some might have 10 or 20. I want to read them in order or maybe I just want the latest. It seems they are displayed with no rhyme or reason that I can see. Is there any way to sort them by release date?

I agree that Apple should improve the year field to be an actual date.
I am not 100% happy doing this, but when you have multiple albums from a single artist for the same release year, a temporary solution is to chage the album title by adding an outline type letter before album titles for that year, so that they appear in the correct order:
    David Bowie
    1977
    a. Low
    David Bowie
    1977
    b. "Heroes"
    etc
This could help in the short term until Apple changes that field.

  • Can I write and illustrate a childrens book in Author I Book?

I have written and have my illustration for a childrens book..can I use the Author I Books to upload my drawings and story and will it create my book with these so I can publish to Apple and perhaps Amazon?

You can't publish to Amazon if you create your book with iBooks Author, only to Apple.
You should be able to use iBA.  Try it, it's free.

  • How can I view books by author?

I am prepared to be embarrassed that I missed something so obvious that only an idot could have missed, but can someone please tell me how I can change the listing of books in the iTunes Bookstore so that the books are listed by author? I've searched the menus and buttons, read the HELP articles, and even used Google to search the internet to discover the answer. So far I got bupkis (spelling?).
To clarify, I am referring NOT to how books are listed in my Library or on my iPod, but to how the iTunes Bookstore lists the books available for purchase. No offense to new authors, but by the time I have to read through every title in the list, my eyes cross and there's a distinct hissing sound eminating from both ears very similar to that which is produced by water boiling in a teapot. The mood for finding a new great book to read is long gone.

If you mean in iBooks, just go to the store and press the browse button on the bottom of the screen. Then, choose a author on the left.

  • TS3274 Unable to choose books by author after IBooks upgrade

I have just upgraded my IBooks on my IPad 1 (iOS5.1.1). Now if I am in the browse mode I am unable to choose books to purchase. Each time I click on an author I am asked to click on author to see books. I have tried removing IBooks from my IPad and reloading it and still have the same issue. Since I am using an IPad1 iOS5.1.1 is the most up to date operating system I can put on so I can't try upgrading to iOS6.0. Is there a work around for this problem?

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
    iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following
    Books and PDF Files
    Books only
    PDF only
    In the Sync Books panel
    All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
    Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

This information was unbelievably hard to find - and Firefox Help didn't cover it. How does anyone manage a list of 100 bookmarks in random order?
