Sorting by name doesn't work

I recently upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion, and cannot seem to get the finder to sort my files and folders alphabetically (by name).
I have tried all of the following methods:
clicked the gear in the finder -> arrange by -> name
clicked the icon with the boxes and the lines above them -> name
clicked view -> arrange by -> name
None of these methods work. The files and folders are still in a seemingly random order (e.g. mockups, AWS, Business, Corporate, Collaboration, Technology).
Other sorting methods work (kind, application, date modified, etc.) as expected. It is sorting by name that doesn't work (sorting by name, and sorting by none do not affect the order of the files and folders).
Any advice on how to make this work would be appreciated. It was working fine for me with snow leopard before I upgraded.

I tried finding the preference file (as this was recommended in another post as well), but am having trouble. It is not under: library->preference->com.apple.finder.plist and does not show up when I do a search (making sure I search 'this mac').
I should also mention that I am using the column view.

Sorting by dimensions doesn't work

Running CS2, Bridge 1..04.6, Camera RAW 3.7. I have a folder of 40 NEF filessome landscape, some portrait, when I CTRL A and then Sort by dimensions, I thought it would group all the landscape images first (or 2nd) and then the portrait sizes, but it makes no alteration to the order at all. Any ideas why not?

I've dug a bit deeper. In Bridge if the images are either landscape or portrait then the dimensions come up exactly the same, ie the largest side first, eg:
landscape = 3072 x 2304
portrait = 3072 x 2304?
Hence the reason sorting by dimensions doesn't work. So I imported a landscape and a portrait into CS2 and just resaved them. Now looking back into bridge it's applied the correct dimensions so the sort works.
landscape = 3072 x 2304
portrait = 2304 x 3072 (correct)
There is a bug in Bridge that doesn't read image dimensions correctly. Does anyone a fix, I don't want to create an Action to resave all my images again.

search by name doesn't work
I want to search a registry (local Registry Server) for organizations by name using the Registry
Browser. But I get the message No organizations found. When doing a search by classification the
object is found and has the name i was searching for.
Then I've try the search with this one:

Can anybody tell me what's wrong?

I experienced the same problem when trying to run the examples in the Web Services Developer Pack 1.0_01. I found out that there seems to be a bug in the UDDI registry when using a different locale then en_US.
When I use sv_SE as locale I dont get any hits when querying the registry by name, querying by classification works. Also ; if I get a hit the name and description fields are empty (this causes a NullPointerException in the JWSDP portal example)
If I switch to en_US locale both querying by name and retrieving description works fine.

Changing my apple ID name doesn't work

Hi all,
I have following problem which is quite annoying ... So, when I log in on the developer site, my first name is: ezfzsd (which I can't seem to find anywhere on my account)
When I go to my my apple ID account my first and last name are filled in correctly. If I change both, my last name is edited (as it should be) but my
the word 'ezfzsd' doesn't change at all. Whatever I do, it keeps displaying the wrong name.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Or how to fix this?

Sort By Label Doesn't Work

The company I'm working for uses Finder Labels to organize a lot of their data. So they tend to keep their windows in list view, sorted by label. This worked out fine until the upgrade to Tiger. Now when they open folders on the server they have to click a few folders before the finder will sort them by label correctly. The fix only applies to that level though. If they twirl down one of the sub-folders, that folder is not sorted properly. Of course once they click on a few folders in that sub-folder, the Finder will eventually sort them correctly.
I have reproduced this problem on machines running 10.4.3 and 10.4.5 accessing files on both Windows 2000 server and OS 10.4.3 Server. This problem only occurs when accessing folders over the network. It does not happen with local files. This problem is not reproducible on 10.3.9.
Has anyone else seen this issue? Is this a bug, and if so, has it been reported?

I'm really looking for confirmation more than a fix at this point. Can anyone replicate this issue?
I'm currently using an Automator solution to open the folders automatically, so that the Finder will sort the labels correctly when users access them later. However this is not a quick task, and I'm hoping this problem gets addressed.

Connecting to Windows machines by name doesn't work

OK. Here's the story. PC/Linux guy for a long time. I'm the default sysadmin at work and for family. My wife bought me a Mac for my birthday, and I LOVE IT !!
The only problem is I still have 4 windows machines in the house, and I need to connect to them to get work done. (I actually now prefer using the Mac keyboard and mouse over the standard PC ones.)
I've gone through all the tips on joining my Mac to a Windows workgroup, and in the Finder, under the Shared section, I see the names for all my windows machines on the network. I can change my Connect as.. information, and see my windows shares.
Here's the problem, though. I want to use either VNC or MS Remote Desktop Connection on my mac to get my Windows Desktop. I cannot enter in just the name in either of these dialogs. It doesn't fined the machine by name only. If I figure out the explicit IP address, then it works fine.
Also, if I open up a terminal window, and attempt to ping a windows machine by name, it won't find it. What's going on here?

The wonders of name resolution are often a pain in the proverbial.
What response do you get from the "ping" when you attempt to use the name? Are you using the name of the PC on its own or "PCname.local"?

[BUG] Sort - Capture Time doesn't work, movies?

I found a strange bug: when set on Capture Time order, all my Nikon D300 photos are correctly sorted, however some movies I took with an old Canon bridge camera are placed in the wrong spot.
As you can see from the date and hours, they are presented before where they should be.

This is a symptom of a more general issue: LR 3's handling of video metadata is incomplete and inconsistent with the way it handles photo metadata.
With photos, LR reads and writes metadata either from the photo directly or a sidecar. Even if the photo is missing all metadata, you can still edit it in LR and write it back to the photo (or its sidecar). In particular, you can edit Metadata > Edit Capture Time and then write it back to the photo.
But with videos, although LR reads metadata from .thm sidecars, it never writes it back to the sidecars -- the Metadata > Save Metadata To File fails silently. You can edit all the metadata (e.g. caption, rating, keywords) in the catalog except Capture Time.
If you import a photo that's missing the metadata field DateTimeOriginal (aka Capture Time), LR uses the file's creation date as the date that appears above the thumbnail, and the thumbnail will sort properly by Capture Time with respect to other thumbnails. (Note that the date above the thumbnail and Capture Time are two different catalog fields -- a photo can have a thumbnail date but no Capture Time.)
Similarly, if you import a video that's missing DateTimeOriginal, LR uses the video file's creation date as the date above the thumbnail. But unlike with photos, it does not sort properly by Capture Time with respect to other thumbnails (and LR won't let you invoke Metadata > Edit Capture Time to fix the problem). This is the particular symptom you've observed.
As an aside, it would be better if LR used a file's Date Modified rather than Date Created as the default "thumbnail time" and capture time. Windows preserves Date Modified if you copy a file, whereas Date Created gets changed to the current time. So if your camera doesn't produce video sidecars, and you copy the video file in Windows before importing it, LR won't get the correct date the video was taken.
A workaround to this problem is to create manually a .thm sidecar file for your video with the right DateTimeOriginal before importing it. Create a .jpg file with the same base name as your video and use LR or another tool to set its DateTimeOriginal metadata field. Then change the file's extension to .thm. Finally, import the video file into LR, and it will pick up the DateTimeOriginal from the .thm.
This mess with video metadata is a good reason to keep using the third-party plugin in LR 3 to manage video files.

'Sort order column' doesn't work for prompt with function

I turned on the 'sort order column property' in repository for a logic column 'school year', so when I get school year from prompt, it shows desc order. It works fine if th colume in prompt is a simple prompt. But when I add function in the column in prompt (means edit Fx with a case statement), when school year prompt shows in dashboard, it is not sorted in desc order any more, it went back to acs.
Am I missing something, or this is a bug?
Another question, when I turn on 'sort order column property' in repository for a logic column, can I choose to desc on another column? I couldn't do it, and had to create another sorting column.

Cant you create this logic in the rpd and then apply order there and use the newly created column in your prompt..

Just entering the site name doesn't work anymore in Safari

Before I upgraded to Leopard I was always able to just enter something like "cnn" into the URL field and Safari and Firefox would take me to that website. Now if I do that both browsers take me to a search page, my ISPs search page. Now I'm not sure if it's something with the new OS and I can change a setting or if it has something to do with Time Capsule. I added that to my network around the same time so I can't know for sure which it is. Does anyone know what's going on?

This happens to me and it's very annoying. I don't know why, but it doesn't happen every single time. I'd say only 5% of the time I'm able to type in the site name and hit enter without an error popping up.
This was one of the things I loved about using Mac over Windows.

How do I resort files and folders by name in Column View of Finder when Arrange by Name doesn't work?

I was using the arrange by function to select different arrangements of the files and folders in Finder (column view) but now that I want to return to having them arranged by Name, it is not rearranging the files/folders by name. Instead they stay in a totally random, non-alphabetical arrangement. List view sorts without issue by clicking on the column header. It is column view that will not return to arranging by name. Please help me figure out what is wrong.

Sort on date doesn't work

I recently upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to 10.6.4, and I find iCal isn't working terribly smoothly. The version I now have is 4.0.3.
Specifically, the "sort on date" command sorts only about half of the visible to dos, so some are at the top, then there's a run of undated to dos, then more dated ones.
IIs this a recognized & fixable problem? and if I can fix it, how do I go about it??

I have just tried this out on my local Discoverer Viewer 10.1.2.1 and it worked exactly the way it is supposed to. I have been using 10.1.2 since it first came out and am unaware of any issues in this area. Are you able to re-create this using the Video Store business area? If so, I have that and will be able to take a look for you.

When I perform a search through Reports -> Data Dictionary -> PLSQL -> Search Source Code and I right-click -> Go To ... on a row of the results, nothing happens.

Sorry Vadim, but the procedure to reproduce the bug is different:
1) Open the Reports tab
2) Expand Data Dictionary node
3) Expand PLSQL node
4) Click on Search Source Code
5) Select a Connection
6) Click on Text Search, enter a string to search and click Apply
7) On the results page, right-click any line and select Go To <package name>
8) The package opens on line 1, not the line shown on step 7
While we're at it, do you think it would be possible to make the above process more user-friendly? Like, for example, right-clicking on a Connection and have the Search Source Code option there (that would take me directly to step 6)?

N8 dialing by name doesn't work

Hi, since updating the sofware (knew I shouldn't have done that!) I can no longer dial people in the contacts by name, it is like the phone is searching a different contact list than before but I only have one contacts list. Please help, I loved this feature and miss it very much!

It's possible that feature got disabled. At the dialler screen, tap the application menu button bottom right -> Contact search -> ensure it's set to On.

Creating template from assembly with whitespace in image name doesn't work

Does there exist a Bug Tracker?
Given is the following:
A test .ova describing a simple VM.
1. this .ova is imported as assembly and successfully unpacked.
2. we have unpacked following files:
- "test vm-disk1.vmdk" (notice the whitespace in filename!)
- "test vm.ovf"
3. assembly is shown in web gui
4. create template from this assembly
5. webgui shows progress but the process will never stop. vbox-img is using 100% cpu time, and no .img in VirtualDisk directory is created.
Workaround:
Avoid whitespace in .vmdk filenames and reference them correctly in .ovf.
This is OVM 3.0.3 with latest patches.

Outlook sort by name - quicktype / searching by name using keyboard doesn't work right

I'm not sure how to best explain this. In Outlook first you sort by name, and then you quickly type the first few letters of the person's name.
In Outlook 2010, this would cause it to go to the right person. For example if I type M-A-R it would go to Mark
However in Outlook 2013 when I type M-A-R rapidly, it goes to the R's in the alphabet.
Anyone else had this experience and have a suggestion on how to do anything about it?

Could you give us more exact information? Did you refer to sort by "TO" or "From"?
In Outlook 2013, on “Mai” tab, under "search box" section, there is no "By Name" option in the sort options.
Please check and rebuild the index:
Click start and in the search box type "Index". Go into the Indexing Options applet and Click "Modify". When the Indexed Locations dialog comes up, make sure " Microsoft Outlook" is checked.
If the issue still persists, you can rebuild the index for test.
