Sorting Files in Finder eg. Artists, Album etc.

Hi, is there an option where i can arrange my files by artists or albums like in windows? I'd like to browse my music files easily without using itunes as im only editing the metadata.
In Windows -
Choosing sorting options: http://img.technospot.net/group-by-more-options.gif
Into: http://s3.amazonaws.com/satisfaction-production/s3images/21365/Picture_7inline.png
I've found an app called FileBrowse that sorts files in special folders? but it just doesn't makes sense to pay for such a function.
Help will be most appreciated.

If I'm reading your description correctly, this is exactly the same setup I use. I use a directory structure like this: genre/artist/album/tracks. Anything whose metadata and/or filenames I haven't fixed yet goes into a temp folder until I'm ready to process it. I then fix the folder and filenames, and move the item from the temp folder into its permanent location before I add it to iTunes. (Obviously, I don't let iTunes manage my collection, but do it manually myself.) You can change the metadata all you want and iTunes will still find the referenced files as long as you don't change the directory names or the filenames. If I want to move a directory or change the filenames for some reason, I just remove it from iTunes first and then add it again after I'm done making changes. Finder doesn't really enter into it, since it doesn't display metadata. What it comes down to is that iTunes doesn't care much about filenames as long as it knows where the file is, and Finder doesn't care about metadata.

  • [Bug?] iTunes 10.4 and type an 'umlaut' in artist/album etc.

If i try to edit an artist in the artist field and type a german 'umlaut' like äöü in the input field the autotext in this field will stop working and the autotext is inserted. So I can't edit/assign a artist/album etc. name with a german umlaut without using the clipboard. Please fix this.

You are correct and I wish that I had known this before spending 4 days and a lot of trouble going over this with both Apple Care and iTunes support. They had me jumping through hoops and didn't know anything until it was finally escalated. Only then did I get a vague response like I mentioned in the first post. It's troubling to me how a simple response from anyone there could've just said we know about this and they are bugs in 10.4 causing this.
There are other issues too as you point out with the syncing and crashing. Anyway, hopefully others will find information here more useful than calling Apple for help. Not much we can do now except roll back to 10.3 for those that kept it and hope also they can updated Apple Application Support component.

  • HT2470 How to sort files in finder

Is there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name?  Right now I can only sort by one or the other.  If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up.  If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name.  I like the column view because it helps me see the directory structure easily.  I hope that doesn't have any influence on what I'm trying to do.

Choose View > Arrange By > Kind to group by Kind. Then choose Option-View > Sort By > Name to sort within the Arrange-By groups.
See this MacWorld article for more info about Finder sorting and arranging.

  • Sort files in Finder column view for the current folder only?

    Hi,
I don't really understand how finder sort settings work, even after using OS X since it first came out. Maybe someone can give me a hand.
I'm trying to sort files inside one specific folder according to their name decending. In general I have arranged them by label and sorted by file name ascending. Every time I try to use the settings in the "display options" (cmd+J), this applies also to several other folders. Even if I right-click on that particular folder to enter the settings.
Isn't it possible to apply different sort/arrange options to individual folders?
    p.

For column view, there is only one arrange/sort, no matter where you are in the hierarchy. It is based on what the arrange/sort was set on the original folder opened.
In the View Options, the Brows by ??? view checkbox controls what happens when you open a folder from that view. If it is set, then the folder opens in the same view as the enclosing folder. If unchecked, and you have set a view on a folder, that folder will open in the desired view.
Again, this does not apply in column view. Column view has only one arrange/sort for the entire hierarchy.

  • ITunes 8: How to remove the little grey arrows next to artist, album etc.?

    Hello
Since upgrading to iTunes 8, I can no longer find the setting to remove the arrows next to the song name, artist, album and genre. I don't like them in my library as it takes up space and creates clutter while I'm browsing though.
If you don't know what I mean, then see this: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596100360/figs/d1e733-web.jpeg labelled as "Little gray arrows"
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks

It's all over this place, but:
Close iTunes, open Terminal. Put in this command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE

  • Sort files in Finder Column View?

Like to sort files by date in column view, is this possible? I know you can do it in List view, but can't seem to do this in column view. It would have to be folder specific, as the upper level (which are folders of folders) should be alphabetical, then the folder with files I'd like to sort by date created. Now, all are presented in alphabetical order, and then I have to scroll down to get to them.
    Thanks!

Nope, can't be done in Finder column view - alphabetical is the only option.

  • Petition : View by (artist/album/etc) option for playli

the songs in my player are of two languages, so I have two playlists for songs of each language. Each of these playlists consists of thousands of songs. So selecting specific songs while playing any playlist becomes a big headache, since I cant search the playlist according to artist or album.
I would love to have the 'view by' functionality for playlists also, something that can make big playlists look like libraries.
So, if u ppl agree with me please sign!

I am talking about the player not the software.
Saving different libraries definitely comes handy if ur collection contains songs of multiple languages, and u want to organise them separately. By giving playlists the option of viewing by artist/album/genre, ur basically turning the playlists into libraries.

  • How do I change the info (artist, album, etc) on an MP3 file?

I am editing some mp3 files in GarageBand and I need to put in a different artist and album name. When I export the file from GarageBand and open it in iTunes it says that the artist is me and that it is my album. Any help on how I change it? I need to change the files properties and not just the name in iTunes because I need to upload it to the internet and so the artist name needs to be downloaded with it. I am running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1, iTunes version is 12.0.1.26, GarageBand version 6.0.5 (428.5).
    Thanks

Change the preferences in GarageBand in the "My Info" settings before you create the project:  The "before" is important, because a bug in earlier GarageBAnd versions causes GarageBand to ignore the changes settings, if the project has been created with different "My Info" settings.
You can also enter different settings, when you bounce the song to iTunes using the Share menu:

  • HELP!  Letters 'F' and 'G' are jumbled together in Artists, Albums, etc!

    Hi,
For some reason, anything on my iPod beginning with an 'F' or a 'G' is mixed together. Instead of having all of the 'F's in alphabetical order, I have to weed through a bunch of 'G's as well. Here's an example straight from my songs list on my iPod:
    Face to Face
    Gage Park
    Faint
    Getaway
    Fetisha
    Getting Better
    Ghosts
    Fiddler's Green
    Fingers In The Factories
    Gimme Gimme Gimme
    Find Me An Angel
    Fireworks
    Girl
    etc.
It continues all the way through until the list reaches the letter 'H'.
It only happens with 'F' and 'G' and the problem only appears on my iPod - NOT on my computer when I open iTunes!
Any idea on how to fix this? It's getting to be really annoying.
    Thank you!

Its possible to make your Artist tag and Sorting tags different.
Theres a feature that allows for custom sorting, like last names first, etc. Example: say I take artist John Doe. iTunes has a feature where he can be sorted as Doe John, but still be listed as John Doe, thus he would appear in the D section but be listed as John Doe.
While I do not believe this is your problem, it should be able to fix it
To try this, open iTunes. Right click on one of these problem artists, and select "Get Info".
From here, go to the Info tab, and ensure all the information is correct. Then, go to the sorting tab and type in their name as you want it to be sorted on the iPod (For example: if you want Face to Face to appear just as that then type in Face to Face).
Do this for all of the problem artists, and load up the iPod. If it still isn't sorted properly, I would restore your iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a way to undo "autofill" so that all the songs, artists, albums, etc on my iPod touch 4th gen coincide/are synchronized again?

I don't know if you can help me, but I erroneously clicked on "auto fill" under the "on this ipod" category of the itunes screen that's located on my desktop.  As a result, all the songs, albums, artists, etc., are now out of sync, don't coincide with one another, and when I touch a song to play on my ipod touch (fourth generation) it flips to a different artist/song and plays it automatically.  Is there any way I can undo this, and if so, how?   This occurred while I was purchasing/downloading music onto my iPod, and the usb cord was plugged into the modem at the time.  Any suggestions/advice offered to solve this problem would be much appreciated.

    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music

  • How to sort files in finder

I don't want my files to sort by title or kind or any of the given options.  can I change it?

If I understand your question correctly you're limited to the sorts that are built into finder. It is not possible to add any to it.
What are you wanting to sort on? Perhaps you are overlooking it.

  • Sorting files in Finder Window A-Z instead of Z-A

My issue arises when I access Finder through an app (for example, when I'm adding a file to my iTunes library). The files in the Finder window are being sorted Z-A instead of A-Z. I think I might have accidentally hit a shortcut to sort Z-A, and I can't figure out how to toggle it back. It's a small thing, but it's driving me crazy. I've tried switching between all the different viewing options, and that doesn't work. Anyone know what to do here?

    Good Morning V.A.L.I.S.
Thanks for the question.  I'll include some information about the Finder application below.  What I usually do is select a folder like Documents or Music and change the view to List view.  At the top of each column is a grey "header."  The first one you should see is Name.  Click on Name and your files will be sorted in order by the file name.  A ^ symbol beside the column heading indicates the files are in ascending ( A - Z ) order.  Click on the word Name again, and the sorting will toggle to descending order (Z - A).  Does that make sense?
Mac Basics: The Finder organizes all of your files - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201732
    List View
Choose View > as List to see the items in a consecutive order. You can change the sort order of the list by clicking the headers (Name, Documents, Kind, Date) at the top of the list view. Click the same header a second time to switch between ascending and descending order.
If an item is within a folder, you can click the triangle next to the folder name to see any items stored within that folder.
    Have a great day!

  • I need help finding an artist/album

I was just on iTunes yesterday and I listened to a song or two by an artist that I can't remember now. It was a female artist that had sort of a folk/jazz blend (one of the reviews actually mentioned this exact mix of styles) and it featured the artist on the cover standing outside among some leaves with a fall/winter coat on.
I think it is a fairly recent release, and I want to say her first name was something like Stephanie, but I did a search and came up with zilch.
    Any ideas out there?

Thanks for the try, but I was just slogging through the other "New Releases" on the Jazz page, and saw on one of the artists "other listeners also bought" portion, the name, Sara Gazarek!
That was what I was looking for; so thanks, but found it myself!

  • Remove unchecked artists/albums etc

For some reason when I check check "selected playlists, artists and genres" and uncheck the artists I do not want on the iphone they are not removed.
Reading the forums it was indicated that songs that are part of a playlist will not be removed so I deleted all the playlists and the songs/artists are still on the iphone.
I then removed all songs and added them back in but they are still there.
I even disabled genius and the artists/songs are still there.
I know I can manually manage the music but unchecking the artists would be very unwieldy.
The main summary screen is set to open itunes when this iphone is connected and nothing else and the music tab does not have the automatically fill free space with songs checked.

It appears that unchecking genres is still working but leaving all fields as default and then unchecking band names still syncs these bands.
Does anyone know if this is a "feature"

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically changing artist, album.....?

How do I stop iTunes from automatically changing artist, album, and genre names?
I keep my itunes library folder very organized. You wont find the same artist spelled two different ways in it. But itunes automatically changes the artists, album names, and genres for whatever reason, making it so I have to edit my library all over again.

    No, don't check it!
That is the only setting that would let itunes change file names. Read right underneath it - itunes will create files & folders based on artist & album name.
Something else must be changing your files, then - not iTunes.
Every PC comes with WIndows Media Player. Go into that and uncheck the options to retreive internet info for albums. It's in 2 places, on the Library tab and the Privacy tab.
