Sorting in Aperture

In Aperture, is there a way to sort photos not by date and time, but so that they display in the order I repeatedly need them within the browser, by for example assigning numbers in decimal form and somehow (?) making that the sort field?
Thanks for any tips!

Actually it' really easy - take a look at this article:

  • Is it possible to sort the Aperture Library by Lens used

Is it possible to sort the Aperture Library by Lens used? And get statistics on the different Lenses used?
    I'm using latest Aperture.

I would just add that your Preferences settings have to be set to show the columns you need. Go to Aperture -> Preferences, and select the Metadata tab. in the "List View Columns" field, for whichever set you have chosen with the radio button, choose the set of data from the pulldown list that shows the fields you want. For example, I have the lens model field set in EXIF-Expanded set. I choose that set and those fields will show in the columns in List View.
    Great tips, thanks!

  • Sorting Aperture photos on ATV...

After the upgrade I really love the option to be able to sort my Aperture photos by EXIF date or file name. It was a frequent request and great Apple listened to its customers, now I finally can use ATV in my photo business.
    Cheers, Fons.

Interesting...I had read elsewhere that the new ATV update Take 2 does not play nice with Aperture-based photo organization. I heard that it just dumps all your Aperture photos into AppleTV, with no regard for Project folders, etc. Is that not the case in your experience? Can you give very specifically, what are you able to do with the Aperture hierarchy of projects/albums/photos...
    Thanks much!

  • Should I buy Aperture in July 2014 even though it's EOLing?

I appreciate this may seem a bit like asking 'should I buy a house when the government has just announced the new freeway is going to run through the back garden', but…..
I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist with a bit iPhoto library and some Photoshop knowledge.  I was planning to buy Aperture when Apple next updated it because I liked the idea of being able to do more sophisticated Photoshop-esque tweaking of levels, curves, filters etc whilst still only having one unified photo library for iPhoto and Aperture.  It's important in my household to have photos accessible in iPhoto too.
But then Apple announces that instead of updating Aperture, it's ceasing development.  So now I'm torn.
So should I buy Aperture now - seems like there will be one more update for Yosemite - because it will still do what I want it to do?  Or should I adopt Lightroom on the grounds that at some point in the future, as with FCP 6, later versions of OS X will stop supporting old apps like Aperture and I'll be forced to switch to Lightroom or find another solution anyway.
Better to do this now than before I learn the new app and have a ton of images with changes that won't cross over.
    Thanks for any advice/insight.
    Andy

Have a look at Capture One Pro as well - IMO it is the most Aperture like tool out there, it doesn't have as big a feature set as Aperture, but what it does have is very good quality some of it better than Aperture. There is a free trial avaialble, and its on for half price right now.
There are a number of comparisons recommending  the quality ofCapture One's raw convertor; I personally like it much better than Aperture's raw convertor (admittedly only checked with my own Panasonic raw files). I also like its gradient brush, the ability to copy masks between edits (and invert them), and the ability to assign multiple edit functions to the same mask. (I miss the ability to control levels, curves, highlight and shadow modification with a brush or mask)
After a week of evaluation I purchased a copy - I'm tired of waiting for feature upgrades, and don't like using a market trailing raw convertor on every image. I have a choice (not made yet) of doing some of my work, mostly organization and sorting, in Aperture, and RAW conversion in Capture One, or of making a clean break and doing everything from here on in Capture One.
But one thing is clear - I'll have to wait an uncertainly long time (but at least 6 months) before I get new or improved editing features or an improved RAW convertor for Aperture replacement (and then I'll be faced with an undefined cost to transition my images from Aperture to Photos), whereas companies like Capture One, DxO and Adobe can provide those improvements today, and are continuously providing more improvements to customers.
IMOthose other companies will see their revenues and R&D budget pickup as they acquire new users from the Aperture diaspora.

  • IPad and Aperture Photo Organization

I've searched these forums but I haven't been able to find a suitable answer to my question. I recently "upgraded" from iPhoto to Aperture 3 for my digital photo library. I rearranged all of my projects in Aperture (Events in iPhoto) and I'm fairly happy with the way I can view them in that program. Unfortunately, when I purchased my new iPad and imported all my photos they seem to be in some random order that I can't figure out. The "Event" order on the iPad seems to mimic the order of my "Projects" in Aperture but when I look under the "Photos" tab, the photos are not in chronological order or in any order that I can determine. I find it very hard to locate a specific picture this way since I have around 10,000 photos. I did not have this problem on my iPhone when I synchronized using iPhoto. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions? Thanks in advance.

I have just had a frustrating time trying to work out what the iPad sync is doing with my 20,000+ aperture library - and I think I have worked out what it is doing - all albums ticked for sync in itunes are sorted in the iPad according to the date of creation of the album, and ditto for projects
which is a real pain - so now I have to abandon viewing these 1000s of pics on the iPad by project, and just use albums, BUT then I need to make new albums in the various folders into which I sort my Aperture albums, (with extra dummy ones where I might in future need one, or this late-made album will appear at the bottom of my iPad album list!) especially for iPad syncing, being a subset of all my albums, because even with 64 gb I don't have enough space for all my pics of course, and copy the contents of the old ones into the new ones
and I plan to make all such new albums names: "i whatever" and plan to only tick these for syncing with my iPad
comments welcome from others who have sussed this or think I have it wrong

  • Aperture isn't syncing to iPhone in chronological order

I just moved from iPhoto 09 to Aperture, and when I synced my iPhone with Aperture for the first time, Aperture isn't syncing to iPhone in chronological order like it did in iPhoto. All my images, albums, etc. are sorted by image date in Aperture, but there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to how iTunes/Aperture sync to my iPhone 3G. I'd like to be able to scroll down to my newest photos on the iPhone like I did when I synced with iPhoto 09. Anything I need to do differently? Thanks.

This has been discussed on the iPhone forum. The best way to "fix it" is change the album sort in aperture to custom (drop down menu). This seems to fix it.

  • *Shocked* by the performance of Canon DPP, and DDP workflow with Aperture

I love Aperture. My brother mercilessly hounded me for two years, and when Aperture 2 came out, I gave it a shot. Aperture 3, despite my nightmare conversion story, has been a dream come true . . . until I discovered sharpening.
In my quest to get sharper photos, I've toyed with image stabilization, tripods, higher shutter speeds, steadying the camera, and depth of field, and even bought several professional lenses. My photos STILL did not look as sharp as those I saw in galleries and online. But wait . . . my JPEG files from my sporting events did . . .
I read that RAW files are not sharp, and sharpening is applied to JPEGs on the camera. But why is Aperture and my MBP not able to sharpen photos well using any one of the three sharpening sliders or the sharpening tool? I was then led to DPP, kicking and screaming. What I discovered was truly amazing.
Forget about the personal opinions with warmth and contrast between Aperture, ACR, and DPP. DPP is the unquestioned leader in producing sharp photos from RAW images. You drag the slider . . . it's sharp. It's even sharper than the photos I've spent 20 minutes sharpening in CS5 with sharpening masks, sharpening tool, etc. The DPP tool JUST WORKS. Even noise with high ISO is MUCH improved. High noise still can use an expensive tool to correct, but still MUCH better than Aperture.
Until Canon reveals their secrets to Apple and Adobe for RAW processing, I need to figure out a way to use DPP for RAW processing.
For those that use DPP for RAW processing, how to you work it into your workflow? I want Aperture to be a one-stop shop, but I don't want to store the original RAW, the DPP-edited RAW, and potentially a TIFF for additional editing and noise reduction?
Do you sort in Aperture first? Do you convert in DPP first? How do you maintain file integrity, and at the same time, minimize disk space usage?
If you no longer use DDP, please tell me why, and how you've worked around it?

All I can say is, either I've been in the weeds all this time, or your skills with sharpening are better than most.
    A couple of questions:
1-What do you use under Sharpening for and Edges under "RAW fine tuning" you thankfully shared your settings for Edge Sharpen (^s)
2-What camera and RAW format are you using (this may help me fine-tune my preferences). I've got a 7D and primarily shoot MRAW. (Not the best for a couple reasons, but I don't need or want the large file sizes.)
To be sure, default sharpening in Aperture is pretty bad. And I have played with sharpening going on 40 hours now over several months. I could not get a good result.
Your documenting the exact settings and sharpening tool is what helped me get past whatever I was doing before. Maybe I was thrown by the higher default contrast in DPP. I'm now able to produce a better result in Aperture than DPP, or even my laboriously-sharpened photos on Photoshop. There are some tradeoffs in each, but I didn't want to use DDP as part of my workflow. Now that I've used it more, I'm convinced I don't!
And the definition setting is very useful. It's the only mainstream adjustment I've never really used.

  • Loss of camera settings when importing raw files in Aperture 3

    Hello Everyone,
I seem to have an issue with raw pictures taken with a Nikon D90. I noticed that when shooting in raw, any setting I used on the camera (for example B&W or landscape settings) are lost after the pictures are imported in A3. Did anyone else experience the same issue? Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks,
    Val

Shooting raw will always give best results and probably simplest to do any adjustments you want inside of Aperture. When you select B&W Aperture is not communicating with Nikon fully or visa versa. It is a simple and more rewarding experience to set B&W or any other settings in the Adjustments Pane in Aperture. There is another small tab also called Adjustments which opens a drop down window. Here there are a range of options to choose from one is B&W. Another pane then opens with red green or blue filters. B&W is sensitive to colour. With these you can change the way the grey scale sees things like the blue sky or foliage.
Another nice feature of raw is no need to worry about White Balance. Leave the camera on Auto WB, any inaccuracy can be easily sorted in Aperture. Nikon has quite good auto WB anyway.
To begin, it is best to consider raw as a starting point rather than a finished product until you get used to the things that do and don't interface twixed camera and Aperture.
I hope that is some help. Welcome to Aperture. Allan

  • Aperture and sharpening

Before I got a Macbook Pro and Aperture, I used Adobe Photoshop to do all my RAW file processing. I usually just did some curve and exposure adjustment in DCRAW and if the images needed sharpening after I exported them I would use Photoshop itself for that.
Aperture's sharpening tool (ctrl+s) seems very unsatisfactory. It really doesn't seem to actually sharpen things. Here is a sample of what I'm talking about:
    Unsharpened:
    http://www.wikiupload.com/filestore/upload1/187138905944a2bcc4af409.png
    "Sharpened":
    http://www.wikiupload.com/filestore/upload1/72950995144a2bd97c50c0.png
So adding black to dark areas means=sharpening? I thought sharpening was reducing the amount of pixels in a picture? I know that I went overboard with the sharpening (100%) but this was just to give an example of what the program does on any sharpening setting, just more dramatic.

Aperture's sharpening is fairly simplistic -- you have a radius, and you have an "amount." If you want to sharpen one image, and then batch apply it to 400 other images, you're not going to get real guaranteed results.
Frankly, Nik with Photoshop is superior here. It's a very specialized product, which has evolved over 3 or 4 years, and it is very good at what it does. Aperture will not give you results at are as good, so it depends really on what is "good enough" for you or your customer.
If it were me, and I were getting satisfactory results with Aperture for other adjustments besides sharpening, I would create a group of some sort in Aperture, export them all to Photoshop, and then run them through Nik in batch mode. This will, today, be fastest on a PPC machine, because Photoshop isn't Intel native yet. That's the price you pay for being on the leading edge... there are always pain points that take a while to migrate.
By the time all the hardware and software is ported and migrated, there will be some other killer new feature you want "in the next release." Or at least, this has been the pattern for 25-30 years now... as long as machines other than mainframes have existed

  • Still having Aperture iPhone sync problems

I'm new to Aperture, and have had odd issues when syncing selected Aperture albums through iTunes to my iPhone 3G. Edits do not appear in images on my iPhone - not even simple crops. In order for my photos to consistently appear with edits intact from Aperture is to force Aperture to generate previews almost every time. This is a big hassle to do EVERY time, especially when I have to do it for hundreds of photos at a time!
Also, Aperture isn't syncing to my iPhone 3G in chronological order like it did in iPhoto '09 just a couple weeks ago. All my images, albums, etc. are sorted by image date in Aperture, but there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to how iTunes/Aperture sync to my iPhone 3G. I'd like to be able to scroll down to my newest photos on the iPhone like I did when I synced with iPhoto '09.
I like using my iPhone and Apple TV to show photos to clients, and I would like to have them appear in chronological order like they should.
Are these two issues bugs, or is there a fix?
I've reinstalled Aperture, restored my iPhone, repaired permissions on my Mac, and the issues remain.
    Thank you.

Hello! I seem to be having a similar problem to what is being discussed here. So I figured I would add what is going on with me.
I will try to keep it short but I apologize in advance for it being a bit long.
Hardware: 2006 Imac with Radeon mobility x1600
For me there was no problem before the systemd upgrade to 210 and the upgrade to 211 did not fix the problem of black screen on boot.
Also I upgraded my kernel from 3.13.5-1 to 3.13.6-1 after the problem with systemd started.
Downgrading systemd to 208.10 ( the kernel had been upgraded already) got the system working properly again.
I have since gone back to 211 and have found that:
If I wait for 5 - 10 minutes after the computer boots when I move the mouse the screen wakes up and I can unlock the screen and the computer works as normal.
Note: I am using gdm and gnome3. I think from this that my problem is a brightness/screen not being turned on issue?
If I add nomodeset to the kernel boot parameters the computer works but the Radeon drivers are not loaded.
and after booting with nomodeset if I use "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" my computer screen blacks and I have no response.
With both 210 and 211 I can press ctrl+alt+F2 type my username and password into the blind and give commands like "sudo reboot followed by the password" blindly to the computer and the computer will execute them.
I hope that this can be fixed soon... It is annoying at best.
    EDIT
I tried  "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" again and found that I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a terminal login prompt that I can use and see! Although gdm login/gnome is still a black screen...

  • Radeon only boots with video sometimes

Alright, I'm having a strange problem. About half the time when I start my system, the radeon driver loads properly, kms kicks in, the terminal resolution changes and everything works peachy.
The other half of the time, right when the driver is loaded and the resolution is supposed to change, my monitor just starts as if it has a signal but the screen stays dark. The system boots up completely fine otherwise and I can ssh in to use it. Any ideas why I would have video one boot but not the next? I can't find any difference between them.
This is a fully up to date freshly installed system. I've included the journal logs for a successful boot and a no video boot below:
    Good boot:

  • MobileMe Gallery Request to server failed.

I have been trying for 3 days on 3 different computers to upload photo to mobileme gallery and I keep getting An error occurred with the publication of album "xxxxx". Request to the server failed. I can publish one picture at a time and add one picture at a time and get it to sync. I published two albums one picture at a time. I am only trying to publish about 18 pictures. I tried three different events. What to heck is going on.

Well at least the Discussion page is a place to post ones notes even if you have to answer your own questions. Here is the work around for my problem. I think it is connected to an issue with the iPad. If you sync to the iPad and you have images sorted or arranged by any option other than Version Name or Manual, the order of the photos on your ipad may not be the same as on Aperture when synced.
If I select Manual or Version Name sort in Aperture before I upload to MobileMe Gallery, the photos upload correctly. If I try to upload sorted by date, I almost always get the error listed above. I think if the version name sort is the same as the date sort, you may be able to upload without the error.

  • Watermarking for images on mobileme

    Hi
I have my various albums all sorted in Aperture, and published them accordingly to Mobileme. My question is how can I add a watermark to the images that are displayed on Mobileme?
I know I can set a Web Export preset to add watermarks, but this would mean exporting all my images and all albums, thereby creating a duplicate version of these images with watermarks. I would then need to publish these watermarked versions onto mobileme.
Is there a more straightforward way? I have a problem with this because that means I need to keep 2 separate projects of essentially the same images - 1 project with my normal images, and 1 project with the watermarked web versions. Every time I update my normal project, I would also need to do a web export to my duplicate project just to make sure my mobile me gallery is also updated.
So I was wondering if there was a function within the mobileme sync that can automatically append the watermark just for those being displayed on mobileme.
    Any advice greatly appreciated..

    Hi
Excellent point you have made.... It would be great if Aperture had that feature, instead as far as I know, you need to create your Watermarks in Photoshop.
I think in the future!!!!! hopefully creating watermarks in Aperture might be possible.... hopefully the next version....fingers and all crossed
Look at this link, it might be helpful.
    Regards
    Gerry....

  • Moving photos within film strip

    Hi,
I apologize in advance for such a rudimentary question, but what would be the fastest and easiest way to move one or more photos from one end of the filmstrip, to the other? I know I can just select the photos I want to move, drag them to the edge of the film strip and wait for it to scroll to the desired location, but I was hoping there is a faster, more efficient way. Basically I have some photos at the beginning of the film strip that I want to place next to similar photos that appear somewhere towards the end of the film strip. Unfortunately shuttle control ceases to function once you click and drag a photo.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There really are many many ways to sort-of do this. It depends how much you want to do with either the keyboard and/or the selection pointer (a/k/a the mouse cursor). None of the ones I know are as direct as it seems you would like.
    A few work-arounds.
    • Select the images you want to move. Press "v" twice to go to Browser view. Change the thumbnail size to small (this can be done w. repeated "{Shift}+{left square bracket}", or in the toolstrip of the Browser). Click-and-drag to where you want. Press "v" to return to Split view.
    • Even easier -- just do this kind of image ordering in Browser view. As soon as you manually move an Image, the sort order changes to Manual. The Manual sort is remembered even if you change to another sort (e.g.: arrange your images, change to date sort, then change to manual sort and Aperture restores your last manual sort).
    • Click to change the Film Strip in Split view to either Browser or List mode (the keyboard shortcuts are listed next to the icons on the Film Strip toolstrip). Scrolling in either of these modes is faster than in the Film Strip.
    • Add color labels to the ones you want together (there are 8 labels to chose from) and then sort by label.
Better yet -- make a Stack of the images you want together. Select the ones at the beginning of the Project, add the ones at the end to your selection, and select "Stacks→Stack".
