Sorting in Photo

How does one sort and/or reverse the sort order in Photo?

You can't. Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

  • What is the best way to scan and sort old photos in iPhoto

What is the best way to scan and sort old photos in iPhoto?  They do not have digital dates.

    Hey Chicago Sue,
Once you scan them and have them on your desktop. You should use Automator and assign the common IPTC tags to the images, so that when you do import them into iPhoto, they get recorded.
Here is an example of an action in Automator:

  • How can I sort my photos by size?  I need to get rid of those which are too small to print.

Is there a way to sort individual photos in iphoto by size.  (I know you can sort photos in finder- picture by size, but mine are in iphoto). I am organizing my thousands of photos into files within iphoto in order to print hundreds.  I am finding that many are too small to ever print (20-30kb) , and would like to delete those en masse rather than waste time sorting them, but cannot find a way to do that.  Does anyone know if there is a way?  It would be a terribly useful function.  Also, sorting by size would enable you to resize photos that take massage amounts of room unneccesarily.  Thanks for any info.

No there is no way to do this.

No it wouldn't. There's no way to change the filesize in iPhoto, it always preserves the original file.

  • How can I sort my photos in a descending order as I could in iPhotos

How can I sort my photos in a descending or ascending order as I could in iPhotos?

    Greetings Regina,
Hope Waukesha is treating you well, haven't been there in years
Events are sorted in the following ways:
If Date, Keyword, Title, and Rating are not what you are looking for then it is time to start using Albums.
Highlight the images you wish to work with and then go to File > New > Album (you can drag more images into this Album later if you want to arrange more of them.)
Once you have the images in an Album you can use the "Manually" sort option which means you can drag the images into whatever order your heart desires.
    Hope that helps.

Apple TV sorts my photos only in ascending order, how can I change so the most recent EVENTS appear first?

I'm looking for an answer to this, too, since I have thousands of Events, and so scrolling down to the bottom every time I want to show my newest photos makes it almost unusable.

  • Why can't I sort my photos by Title when creating a Calendar?

I am doing my first calendar in iPhoto 9.1.2, and thus experiencing my first 'issue' with the new interface. I am creating this calendar from an Event of a family member's 400+ photos from their recent trip to Australia, and unfortunately for me, the battery that keeps track of date and time on her camera was not functioning, so they are all labeled with the same date of Jan 1, 1980. Thankfully I can sort them by Title when viewing in iPhoto. However, when I select this Australia Event to create my calendar, all of the photos revert to being sorted by date. I have tried re-sorting them while in my calendar project, but there are no changes in the order of the images.
Please tell me there is a work-around for this problem. Seems like in the past, the order of the photos when creating a project reflected the way they are sorted in your library.
Thanks in advance if anyone's got any tips...

I did manage to figure out a way around this --- while in the Event, I sorted all photos by title, and then I Batch-Changed the dates to a new date, leaving a minute between each photo, thus putting them in the right chronological order when I created a project using these photos.

In imovie can you trim multiple clips at a time?  Also, can you randomly sort the photos?

Can I do all at once or 1 at a time? It seems to only allow 1 at a time.
No. But you can do one, copy its settings, then seclect the rest and "Paste Audio Settings" to all of them all at once in a project.

  • Trying to create a book and have sorted 900 photos in manual order...the book application resorts my photos and i have to search 900 photos each time. how can i set the sorting

trying to create an Aperture book and have sorted 900 photos in manual order...the book application resorts my photos and i have to search 900 photos each time to place a photo. how can i set the sorting to stay in my manual setup?

    1.  If you manually sort Images in a Project, and then create a new Book w. "Include selected Images" checked, your manual sort order will be preserved.
    2.  As a workaround for when you have already created a Book, batch rename your Images with a leading index or counter after setting the order manually.  You'll have to create a Naming Preset, e.g.: "{Index}_{Version Name}".  The renaming should go in the order that you selected the Images, so be sure to select the first one first, and then use "Edit→Select all" to extend the selection to all Images.  Once the Images are in your Book, a sort on Version Name should be the same as the manual sort you created.
    3.  At the risk of stating the obvious, you could create the Book, import the Images, and then sort them.  The Book -- it is, to Aperture, just a special kind of Album -- retains its own manual sort order.  I recommend using Albums this way.  Use Projects to cull and develop Images, and use Albums for output.  Sorting for a Book (or any output) is better done in the container devoted to that output (and not in the Project, which is more general).

  • Need help to sort out photos

    Hi all,
I just cant figure out something: I have about 3000 photos in my laptop, all in alphabetical order. When I sync them in my iPhone, they never appear sorted in alphabetical order but all mixed up. Anyone could help me to understand what I'm missing?

iTunes stores the photos within each album chronologically. Even though you can re-order your photos within Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements, iTunes ignores the order and simply sorts the photos chronologically.
Knowing this, however, if you really want your photos sorted in a different order, there are a number of applications out there that will allow you to modify the timestamps of these photos - in fact, Photoshop Elements allows you to do this. As expected, if you change the timestamps, you will change the sort order.

I don't think you should ever drag a photo from Lightroom to somewhere else.
The proper way is to select the file in Library (in the Film Strip at the bottom of the window). Then press the button "Export". You will then get a dialogue box. Type in the information for the place where you want to save it. Press the button "Export". The changed (edited) photo will then be where you told it to be saved.
(I am a beginner in Lightroom but think the above is correct)

  • Lightroom 5 will not sort scanned photo properly

Lightroom 5.2, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
I have some scanned photos from a trip to England in 1996. I have assigned to each photo the date it was taken. Lightroom clearly displays the date taken. But two photos will not sort properly by date, as you can see in the screen capture; the highlighted photo was taken August 31, 1996, and sorts between photos taken Sept 2, 1996 and Sept 3, 1996.
    Can anyone recommend a fix?

I think it's the act of reading the metadata from the file that usually corrects inconsistencies in the catalog.
In this case, it smells like it has to do with the LR's buggy handling of files that don't have capture time in their metadata:
