Sorting into date folders

I am new to Lightroom having used iPhoto. I've imported scanned photos into LR4 and have changed the capture dates to reflect the original capture date of each photo imported. My LR Library is sorted by Date folders. How do I automatically get these photos sorted into their respective date folders?

Is there an add-on that can automatically send the photos to their respective folders once edited?
There may be such a plugin, I don't know. You could certainly do this via the export command in Lightroom. You could do this via a publish service in Lightroom.
But let's talk about saving (or "exporting" is the LR word) photos. You do not need to do this to save/export the edited photo, like you might have to do in other software that you may have used. Your edits are automaticdally saved in Lightroom's catalog; you do not need to initiate a save or export action to save your edits. It happens automatically.
So, there is no need to export the photos to a separate folder -- in fact I think this is unnecessary work. Lightroom can display your edited and unedited photos for you. Many people do not automatically export EVERY photo once edited; rather the edited photos are ONLY exported when you need to make some use of the photos outside of Lightroom (web, e-mail, commercial printer, other application), and then they can be considered temporary and deleted once you have completed your use of them.
This would be a good time for you to view some videos about Lightroom, as I think you are having trouble with some very basic concepts in Lightroom.
Please view some introductory videos about Lightroom, as your questions indicate this would be a good time to view these.

On 4.3.5 with the CCK I get a Last Import and All Imported Albums, and Events with an 'album' per date (with the event having the date as its name). There is no setting that I know of.

I loaded my ipad photos from camera and all the pictures sorted by date.  I later sync my ipad with my computer and the photos were all reorganized into IMPRT folders an out of date sequence.  Any idea how to put the photos back into date files other than reloading all of them from camera?

    What version of iPhoto?
Select one and rotate it. Then rotate it back. Does that make it appear?
A much better work flow is the keep the photos after importing.  Check the success the import, wait for at least one successful backup cycle then use you camera's format command to reformat the card

  • 1000s of photos randomly sorted into 1000s of folders.  Any ideas for getting them out without opening each one??

Somehow, very much unintentionally (it might have something to do with a 2 yr old "typing" on the keyboard while I wasn't looking), 1000s of my photos have been placed into separate folders, 2 or 3 random photos or videos in each folder.  I have started opening each folder and moving the photos out, but with almost 1600 folders to go, I need to know if some else has ever encountered this issue, and if so, did you find a quicker way to get the photos out of the folders without having to manually open each one?
For the record, I now have my computer set to lock my screen when I leave my desk, lesson learned.

I am using an iMac with iOS 7.0.4. All of the photos were on iPhoto '11 after I updated to 9.4.3, and Aperture 3.4.5, but a few months ago they all disappeared from the iPhoto and Aperture libraries, Events, Photos and Faces sections. A few weeks later, I noticed a bunch of new folders on my external hard drive with the same title in a serial list of numbers, had somehow been created.  Since I still had the pictures backed up on an external hard drive, I didn't worry about it too much at the time, but today I needed to find a picture from years ago and that brought up the need to fix the mess. In opening the 200 or so files that I have already opened, I noticed that they all listed in their details that they had been modified on 7/27/2013, from 12:07 am to 12:33 am (I guess it wasn't the 2 yr old's fault after all, because she would have been sleeping, sorry kiddo).  The peculiar thing is that there is no rhyme or reason to the way the photos and videos were put in the folders. Some folders have only photos from a broad range of time, some have photos and videos, but none of them are sequential in time within the folder. When I transfer the photos and videos out of the folders, into the main overall picture folder, some of them are already in the main folder and some of them are not, meaning that I can't just take for granted that they are all copies, and delete all of the folders with that certain name.
Since I have now cleared my child of being the culprit for all of this mess, I'm thinking it must have been caused by a computer glitch or an update, as Terence suggested, especially considering the time of night when the changes took place.  All that is listed in the software update section of my System Preferences area is an update to the AirPort Utility to version 6.3 on 7/26/23 at 12:23 pm. iPhoto had updadated to 9.4.3 on 4/27/13, but none of the files showed modifications on any date other than 7/27/13.  Aperture had also updated to version 3.4.5, but it had updated days earlier on 7/11/13. Nothing had updated since 7/11/13 until AirPort Utility updated on 7/26/23, and nothing updated after that until 9/12/13.

Select all the photos that you need to change, then click the "Photos" menu and choose "Adjust Date and Time".
If you add a year, it will adjust all the photos that you selected by adding a year (so if you accidentally select one of the photos that already has "2012", that will change to "2013").

  • Using AppleScript to sort files Into Specified Folders based on Extension

    Hi All!
Here is what I am trying to figure out. I would love some help with this script if anyone can lend a helping hand. I am currently using Hazel to do this but I think AppleScript will be alot more effective.
    Situation:
    - I have a folder with 4 different file types inside - the extensions are (.cop, .cof, .cos, .cr2)
    - These files need to be organized in this folder structure  Captureone > Cache > Proxies
                                                                                                                  > Settings50
    - The .cop & .cof files both need to be put in the "Proxies" folder
    - The .cos needs to be put in the "Settings50" folder
    - The .cr2 can stay where it is.
I'm already using an AppleScript application where it automatically creates the folder structure in the current finder location, which works great. I use a program named Hazel to sort the files automatically into the folders where they need to go. Unfortunately all my computers at work don't have Hazel and I would like help to make a script. Any thoughts to add to my existing script?
    #  define a list of folders - items will need to be quoted if they contain spaces, etc.

I presume that the files are in the master folder not in the subFolders, that the files has an name extension.
This script take the first two characters after the last underscore.
It will move the file in the subfolder, according to the two characters found.
set targetFolder to (POSIX file "") as alias --<-- drop the master folder between the double quotes

tell folder subname of folder (text 1 of subname) of folder targetFolder
if exists then move tFile to it -- if exists this folder then move this file
                      end tell

set text item delimiters to "_"

                return t
          on error
set text item delimiters to oTID
          end try
          return ""
    end getChar_1_2AfterLastUnderscore
To get the exact path of the master folder :
Drag/drop the folder between the double quotes in the first line of the script.

  • Sort files in folders

Hey guys can anyone tell me how I can sort my files within folders in a specific order???  Not in alphabetical order, size, date, kind etc...but in an order that I want them in (documents from school to be exact, I would like to sort them in the progression of the lessons from week to week). I never knew how to do this at the time and now Im kind of learning how to sort all of my docs within Finder, but this seems to be the first stumbling block that I've come across???   Thanks :)

Thought about that but isn't there any other way?
Not when the view for the folder is set to anything other than Icon view.
In Icon view you can choose "none" for both Arrange By and Sort By (in View Options for that folder). This allows you to place the items in any sequence you wish.
However, when the view is set to List, Column, or Cover Flow, although Arrange By can be set to "None", Sort By must be set to some criterium; by default it is set to "Name".
So, if you're viewing the content in List view, items will be sorted by name (unless you change the Sort By criterium).
You can add a number at the beginning to force a sort into the sequence you prefer, as has been suggested. Note that if you do this, add a leading 0 to single-digit numbers (like 01, 06, etc.); otherwise "10" and "11" will be sorted between "1" and "2".
For similar things I use a quick date prefix (or, if the base name is the same, a date suffix) to force a sort into my logical groupings. To keep a logical assortment over time, I use the date form of YY/MM/DD so that items from different years don't get mixed together.

  • How to sort the data in JSP using stylesheet sorting?

Hi, i extracted data out in and display them <%=data%> in the jsp, but how to sort? do i have to provide a drop down list that gives different sorting options, and when user clicks on one option, say sort by title, the collection of results are sorted out on the same jsp page? so all in all, only one jsp page is needed or do i need to create xml files, etc?
i have no idea how to integrate the xml sorting into the jsp page, even after seeing online help, cos there is no example of a jsp page with sorting to refer to. PLease help, thanks alot!

im getting the data from beans, but one of the requirements was that i cant use the database to sort and display but i have to use xslt to do the sorting in the jsps, so i have no idea how to do so. possible to give an example? thanks

I want the folders I already backed up to come together into one folder when that year is over. Is there a way to manually do that or automatic through TM?
I'm quite sure there is no "automatic" way to do this. I've never heard of anyone trying it either. I suppose if you wanted try it, you could simply create a new folder in the same partition TM is on, label it for that year, then gather all the days for that year and drag/drop them into the folder. I suspect (but do not know) you'd be risking the continuity of your backups, meaning TM would simply start over again, meaning that next back up would start a new series of backups, with the first one roughly equalling the entire capacity of your internal HD, instead of adding only the new data to the previous backup. Once again, I would recommend against it, unless you're fine with TM starting a new series of backups if it doesn't work out the way you want it to. Hope you'll post back with results so we can learn from it.

  • When I drag music from a folder that contains songs by different artists and then sort by date added it shows the songs in alphabetical order by artist?

When I drag a bunch of songs with different artists from a folder on my computer to the itunes library and sort by Date added it puts them into alphabetical order by artist. I am able to workaround this by using date modified. Why does itunes do this? This started happening in July. Prior to that never had this problem. Been adding my music the same way for almost a decade.

They are added in the same minute. I do not see the second area next to that if it should be. I'm guessing an update to a newer itunes build is responsible. It's a shame. I am using the sort by date modified. But now whenever I modify a file in Itunes it automatically moves it to the top of the list. I am trying to keep the newest stuff at the top of my itunes.

  • Can I set up folders for major classifications of music as opera, country, etc. and then put all the albums with the genre into those folders folders?

Can I set up folders for major classifications of music as opera, country, etc. and then put all the albums with the genre into those folders folders?

    Hi Richard Bugdal1,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
You can't change the folder structure within iTunes, but you can easily change the view to sort by Genre.
The link below will explain how to do this:

  • How do I sort by date added while maintaining track order?

    Hello,
I'm trying to do what I think is a simple function in ITunes. I'd like to sort by "date added" and have the tracks line up sequentially by track number. In other words, when in Itunes, I'd like to have (from top of the library to bottom) my most recent album with tracks 1-10, listed, and then the next recent album and so forth. Almost like a most recent album. You can of course sort by date added, and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, but then when Ituns plays, you start on the most recent album, it runs through that album, and then is done.
    Any thoughts?

If you ever find the answer, I'd love to know as well. How odd is it that you can do this. I tried several searches for this in software hacks, and applications that let you alter icon views and the like. Can't believe the limited interest in correcting it either.
I was looking for a way to display screen shots of various jpeg elements with files names that double as instructions in a tutorial. Icon view allowed me to see pictures in a large enough size to use as instructions with the corresponding file names. All I would have had to do was screen shots assembled into a PDF and I would have been done. Having to retype every instruction along with copy, and pasting into a new document and so forth is more than double the work for any set of pictorial instructions.
Maybe Garage Band or some other application is the workaround until then. I'll let you know if I ever find a better workaround, or the solution.

  • IPhone and iPad photos - Sort by date taken

If your photos are not sorted by the date the photos were taken, here's how to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
I encountered the problem when syncing my photo library from my computer to my iPhone and iPad.  Almost all the photos were sorted properly by the date they were taken except for photos taken with a Nikon D70S SLR Camera.  The photos from the Nikon D70S were being sorted using the date the sync was performed (not the file creation date nor the EXIF data date).  This caused my photo album to not have all the photos in a nice chronological order.
First I checked to ensure the photos output from the Nikon D70S contained the EXIF "date taken" data and they did indeed have the proper date in the EXIF data. Next I checked to see if the EXIF version number was in each file and it was.  I then noticed the EXIF version number output by the Nikon D70S was formatted differently than the other sources (e.g. differently than other Nikon cameras, other iPhones, etc).
I then viewed the EXIF data for the Nikon D70S photos in the Adobe Photoshop organizer and found the EXIF version number was missing.  It was clearly in the Nikon original files (I use RAW format when taking photos with the Nikon D70S).  This led me to suspect Adobe Photoshop Elements was not exporting the data in a form Apple iTunes could read when I was converting the Nikon .NEF files (RAW format) to .JPG files (needed for Apple iTunes and the iPhone and Ipad products).  Most likely iTunes needs both the EXIF date taken and EXIF version number when syncing photos into iTunes, if the EXIF version number is missing, it uses the date the sync was performed as the date when sorting the photo file in the iPhone and iPad photo viewer.
I then used Adobe Creative Suite / Adobe Bridge (at our office, it's used for graphic arts work along with regular Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design, etc.) to export the files from Nikon .NEF  RAW format to .JPG format and found it output the EXIF data including the EXIF date taken date and EXIF version in a form readable by iTunes.
By using Adobe Creative Suite / Adobe Bridge instead of Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer to convert the Nikon D70S .NEF files to .JPG format (for subsequent import into the iPhone and iPad via iTunes), the process worked properly and the photos are sorted by date taken properly.
