Sorting library

I have a library of 6000 songs and I just spent hours unchecking songs that I don't want on my ipod. With the sorting headers at the top of my library, if I click on the "check" column, will it check all my songs again or will it sort between the checked and unchecked songs (which I want)?

It will just sort the list. Checked first, then unchecked. Clicking at it again, will reverse the order.

  • Sort library items on name only ?

    Hi all,
Probably I am overlooking something. I would like to sort library items (in particular photos from iPhoto) in date sequence, but the only column displayed is the image name and only that column can be sorted. Problem is, that Motion 5 "automatically" sorts the photo's alphabetically if one of the two icons on the bottom right (list or thumbnail display) is clicked. Once sorted alphabetically, there seems to be no way to re-sort the photo's as they were: date sequence. The only way I have found to do this is
    Go to thumbnail display mode
    Quit Motion
    Start Motion
Don't touch the list/thumbnail icons anymore
This is very annoying, because other elements from the library, such as behaviours, are easier shown in list format.
As said, there must be a way to sort photos in date sequence, but I ccannot find how.
    Any help is welcome. Thanks

Ok... well... it's actually "in there" but not like you think, and not really very intuitive.
Go to the "Project Pane" (layers list, etc...) and at the top of the column, select the Media tab.
Go to your photos library and select the "theme" (subgroup) your images are in. Thumbnails or list view, doesn't matter — select the pane the images are in and type Command - A (select all).
Drag ALL the photos into the Media pane (they are NOT added to the layers list.)
Right click on any of the column headers (Preview or Name is good) and from the dropdown, select Sort By > File Created (or Modified).
Select the image you need and drag it onto the canvas (it will be added to the layers list.)
I will grant you it's a little strange... Also, BE CAREFUL!!!! Whatever you do, you DO NOT want Motion to Save Unused Media with the project!!!! Make sure that option is unchecked. Or, command or shift select all unused images in the Media tab and delete them before saving.

  • Sorting library podcasts by song rating

I can sort my Library/Music easily by rating but I can not sort Library/Podcasts by rating. Songs that I do not like I mark with a rating of one star and I desire to sort by rating and delete all with a rating of one star.  Can this be done? Is there an alternative way to do what I desire?  I'm using latest version of iTunes.

You could create a smart playlist that contains all your podcasts and then sort that by rating.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sorting LIbrary by Playlist

    Hi All,
I have a 4 Gig IPOD Nano and I wanted to remove some songs. Unfortunately, I deleted the playlist associated with the songs and had to manually search for songs that didn't have a playlist associated with it.
Can we request that Itunes be able to sort the library by playlist (or lack of playlist) for easier selection of songs?
Not everyone copies whole albums. I have various MP3's/Songs that I copy over and there are not always sorted by album/etc/etc

  • Trying to sort library by file type

Hey all, I'm trying to sort by file type so it can quickly arrange all the TIFF files together in one easy to see group. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong here, because it keeps just slightly rearranging my images, but not putting all TIFF together and all RAW together. They are still mixed, and I have to select by hand, which negates the purpose of sorting by file type for me.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thank you, that worked. I guess out of sake of discussion though, is there not a way to just apply a view filter while in the library module to show only files of a certain type? Like in Bridge, how you can set a view filter for like... Anything. Am I missing something here? This seems like it should work too, because on the bottom of the screen there is a fly down menu that lets you select things like file type, extension, etc... Yet it doesn't seem to actually work as far as narrowing down what you are looking at in your window.

  • How can I sort Library by name?

After migrating to iMovie 11 and having all my folders by year wiped out, I'm trying to figure out how to reorder my library so the events are in order by date.
I don't think there is a way to make an iMove library sort by date (please tell me if wrong), or group by date (as I used to in the old iMovie with folders for each year).
So I'm wondering just how to resort. I have all my events named sort-of by date, like
    2004 BBQ
    2004 spring trip
    2007 ski trip
    2008 party
but then I have others where I added the month to the start of the event name, so for Feb 2004:
    200402 swim meet
and they are sorting now so 200402 comes after 2008, so things are now out of order (I understand it is doing by number).
Wondering the best way to quickly get these back so I can have them in order/group by date. I have TONS of events and now their order is a mess.
Or if my only fix is to rename all of my events with YYYYMMDD or YYYYMM, etc., which would be a big big bummer...
    Thanks

It might be possible, but it's not a simple modification. The script extracts the purchaser's name via a shell script using grep, so to change it so that the playlist is named for the iTunes Store account name, someone would have to be able to figure out how to extract the account name via a grep. That's not something I have yet figured out. You could email Doug and ask if this is something he could consider for a future version:

  • When sorting library as "Album by Artist," an album is out of order

This is really insignificant, I know, but it's bizarre, and I can't figure out why it's happening.
On one specific album, out of 1370, when I sort my library as Album by Artist or Album by Year, a single track is out of order. It is track 12, but appears at the end, after track 14. No matter what I put as the track number for that track, it will always be placed at the end of the album. It is not labeled as a different disc, album, or album artist, or as part of a compilation, nothing is misprinted, and near as I can tell, the track's info is completely consistent with the rest of the album. I even deleted all the track info for the whole album and manually filled it back in, and it still appears out of order. The tracks DO appear in the correct order when I only sort by album.
What exactly is going on here? Is this some sort of bug, or is there some data in the track I haven't thought of that will always cause it to appear at the end of the album when sorting as I do?
    Message was edited by: Rollersnake

OK, putting something in the Album Artist field for the album fixed it.
Near as I can tell, the track info for the album was inconsistent when I downloaded it, and though I deleted the "album artist" field for the whole album, more than once even, it somehow still registered as being different for that one track. Now when I delete the field for the whole album, it stays in order regardless of sorting method.

  • Tip: Sort Library before loading iPod

    Here's a tip for you...
(Not relevant for iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle owners)
If you use Shuffle by Album a lot in your iPod usage, then make sure your Library is sorted by Artist or Album BEFORE loading it onto your iPod.
iTunes will load songs in the currently sorted order (e.g. by song Name, Album, Artist, etc) onto your iPod. If you sort by Artist or Album, then songs for each album will be grouped together on the disk in your iPod, thus reducing the disk thrashing time needed to build a playlist in the iPod's memory.
    Cheers!

This should not have been a question, sorry.

  • Sorting Library by Album Name

Just upgraded to iTunes 7 - I am unable to sort my library by just Album name. When I select available columns it has one titled Album but when I choose it shows up as Album by Artist. The impact is that any album with multiple artists will not sort correctly. Can anyone shed some light on this topic. I just want album name back.

  • Sorting library with songs in asian language

I have asian music (japanese, korean, chinese) on my library and their info are written in asian text. the problem is, when i sort my library by artist or song title, it places asian text on top of the english ones.. so my library is arranged in ascending order of numbers (0-9), then asian songs, and english in alphabetical (a-b-c..z) order. i checked my friends itunes who also had songs in asian text and on theirs, english came before those languages.
it would be much more convenient for me if the songs in english appeared on top. how can i make my library sort my music so that the songs in asian text are placed underneath songs in english.
fyi, i use windows xp and its default language is english.

Go into iTunes, connect your iPod, and then wait for it to connect. Once connected, click on the arrow to "expand" your iPod (if all files are not already shown), then click "Music". Then, at the top, click "Artist", then disconnect.
    Hope it helps!!

  • Sorting Library by folder?

I have a pretty old mp3 collection, and a lot of my songs don't have ID3 tags. I have them sorted into folders for each artist, but whenever I try to import my collection into itunes, it scrambles everything up. I have way too many songs to go through and fill in the tags on each one. I used to use winamp and never had this problem, because winamp offers a 'sort by file path' option.
So, here's my question: is there a way to have itunes sort the library by folder/filepath (instead of reading ID3 tags)?

There isn't a way. If you knew AppleScript, you could have the folder of the file placed in the comments; and then use that to see the folder.
To fix your tags, the easiest way is probably Media Rage. It can tag from FreeDB or even by folder and file name.

  • Itunes Library sorting

I remember having an older version of itunes where you could sort library by artist and their albums, now when you do this it sorsts as such but it has the tracklist with the album, is there a way to sort your library now, by just grouping the artists albums and not showing the tracklist.
    Thanks

is there a way to sort your library now, by just grouping the artists albums and not showing the tracklist
    No.
You can view Albums & sort by Artist.
They aren't grouped with a separator but they are Artist order.

  • Sorting and Grouping in Projects View

In Projects view, when either of two of the three grouping options is selected, there are two sorts in effect: the groups themselves are sorted, and the contents of each group are sorted. These sorts are handled differently, depending on the grouping selected and the sort order selected.
(It appears that there is a bit of the old Apple voodoo in here. The results are arbitrary , but they seem to have been carefully chosen to meet most users expectations. That is to say -- and this is an Apple programming trait -- the arbitrariness is faithful to the expected users' needs, not to logic.)
There are four sorts available, and three groupings
    Sorts:
    . Name
    . Date -- Oldest First
    . Date -- Newest First
    . Library
    Groupings:
    . Ungrouped
    . Group by year
    . Group by folder
So that's twelve possible ways to display Projects in Projects view.
Let's look at a few of them. I'm going to refer to the groups as "Year groups" or "Folder groups" and to the contents of the groups as "Projects". So there is sorting of the groups, and sorting of the contents of the groups (same as "within the group"). These I'll refer to as "Groups sorting" and "Projects sorting".
    Sort: Date -- Newest First
    Grouping: Group by Year
Result: Year groups are sorted in the same order as Projects. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together.
    Sort: Date -- Oldest First
    Grouping: Group by Year
Results are as expected; a reversal of the "Newest First" sort, but with the same groups: Year groups are sorted in the same order as Projects. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together.
    Sort: Name
    Grouping: Group by Year
Result: Year groups are sorted by year, oldest first. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together. Projects are sorted alphabetically, descending.
    Sort: Library
    Grouping: Group by year
Result: Year groups are sorted by year, oldest first. Projects which span multiple years are put in multi-year groups. Projects with the same spans are grouped together. Projects are listed in the order they occur in the Library structure shown on the Library tab of the Inspector. (Note that this last is literal: a Project named "Aardvark Close-ups" if it's in a Folder named "Zoography" will be listed after all the projects in "Yellow Paintings" and all the Projects in "X-rays, thoracic" if those Projects are in alphabetical order by Folder name in the Library. You can see all the Projects in your Library listed on the Library tab of the Inspector by "{Option}+clicking" the disclosure triangle next to "PROJECTS & ALBUMS" twice.)
    Sort: Date - Newest First
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted by date, newest first. Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder.
    Sort: Date - Oldest First
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted by date, oldest first. Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder (where, again, Folder groups are sorted alpha-name, descending, and Projects are sorted alpha-name, descending).
    Sort: Name
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder (where, again, Folder groups are sorted alpha-name, descending, and Projects are sorted alpha-name, descending).
    Sort: Library
    Grouping: Group by folder
Result: Folder groups are sorted alphabetically by name, descending. Projects are listed in the order they occur in the Library structure shown on the Library tab of the Inspector (see note above). Clicking a Folder's name in the Project viewer drills down to show the sub-Folders and Projects in the clicked Folder (where, again, Folder groups are sorted alpha-name, descending, and Projects are listed in the order they appear in the Library).

+I see those icons but note that those projects in folders will be in different sections arranged alpha, and then date within. Am I correct on that?+
    The answer is, it depends.
If "Group by year" is selected, the Groups-sorting will always be by date, regardless of the sort order specified. The Groups-sorting order will follow whatever is specified for the Projects sort order (or default to "oldest first").
If "Group by folder" is selected, the Groups-sorting will always be alphabetical, descending, regardless of the sort order specified. (So if you use Projects view, take care in naming your Folders. Use prefixes if needed to force a desired alpha sort.)
If "Ungrouped" is selected, there are no Groups and perforce no Groups-sorting.
That's all I have to say on this topic (today).

  • Successfully imported json bookmarks file into FF19, and library view shows folders correctly, but Sidebar view shows no folders and so loses my organization.

Longtime FF user. Still on 3.6.28 mostly, due to my need for my large collection of hierarchically organized bookmarks. I have 2000+.
    Trying FF 19 today.
Successfully imported the json file from other system.
Via the Bookmarks menu, Show All reaches Library view and everything is there. Except for the fact that this FF design will not let me see the contents of more than one folder at one time. Which is why I've stayed with 3.6.28.
Now, a friend has shown me that I can see multiple folders AND the contents of multiple folders using Sidebar Bookmarks, just as I wish. Great! But after importing my bookmarks, all I see is a random list of bookmarks in the Sidebar view. There are no folders or subfolders so with this view I lose all the organizational structure I see in the Library.
Am I missing something? Is there a way (an addon) that would put everything in the Library Right Pane? instead of just one folder? That would be fine.
    OR
Is there a way to preserve the organization of my bookmarks after importing them, in the Sidebar view? That would also be fine.
Thanks for any helpful answers. Otherwise, back to 3.6.28 I go.

In the Library view, everything functions as Mozilla would have it. Yes, individual bookmarks are not to be seen, except in the right side pane. And only from one folder at a time. Returning to the beginning, that was my complaint with Show All Bookmarks and why I've stuck with 3.6.28 coupled with Old Manage Bookmarks.
And that's why I asked if anyone is aware of an addon to make the contents of more than one folder visible in the right hand pane of the Library view in FF 4 and up. I've even tried Mike S's "hack" of OMB to see if I could make "Organize Bookmarks" return on FF19. No luck.
So Library View works as it "should". But that's insufficient for my needs.
You've indicated that Sidebar view SHOULD function as I wish. But so far, barring a fix, I don't see folders, subfolders nor individual bookmarks ''in the order'' that they started in, from PC1. I don't know why that failed. I'm happy to keep trying things, til the moon turns green.
Proceeding along -- sort Library? Yes, sorting works. But since the Library is functioning, unsorted is my preference. To make the Library View FULLY ADEQUATE though, I'd want to see bookmarks in different folders viewable at one time. What I need is the Sidebar view with all the folders showing, replicating the Library's View hierarchical structure.
HTML export and import? I'm sure I can import one into FF19. But I don't know how to export them from PC1 as my bookmarks are in .json format. When I try to do that, the dialog window confines me to selecting an HTML file, and so I can't export the .json file I have. I'm sure there's an easy answer, but its not intuitive.
    Thx
    P

  • Why won't itunes match all songs in library

While enabling iTunes Match, it has only downloaded some of my iTunes library for Home Sharing

Thank you both for your responses.  I keep receivng the same error message.  I tried to paste a screenshot into this response, but was unable to do so.
    The error message reads:

    iTunes has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
iTunes Match has encountered an error.  Please choose Sign Out and then Sign In from the Store menu and try again.
I have rebooted, signed out of iTunes Match, and then in again.  When I sort library by iCloud status, I can see different iCloud symbols, including an iCloud symbol with an exclamation point within it, an iCloud symbol with a slash through it, or a symbol with nothing in it, etc.  When I hold the cursor over the symbol, it either reads "Error", "Ineligible", or "Waiting".  Or, in other songs, there is no symbol.
Let me try to follow your instructions above, and see if I can resolve some of the songs that weren't able to be downloaded.  Thank you.
