Sorting Music in iTunes

I am importing all of my music from my hard drive over into iTunes. I notice that it sorts it by artist, then by album, but then my track number. Is there any way to change it to where it sorts like the following: artist, album, song (in alphebetical order) Thank you!

Well, no. That's not what I mean. Like, I like it being sorted by the artist, and then the artists are sorted by the album, but then, after the album, it is by track #. I want that to change to the alphebetical order of that song.

  • How do I sort music in iTunes when played from iPhone?

Okay, so I've been using my iPhone to basically carry music around and play it on different computers, right?  Just turn on manual sync and then I can play music on iTunes straight from my music library without needing to have it in my computer's iTunes library.  The problem is that all the music is out of order, and the column headers at the top that should be clickable to choose how you want the music to be sorted are all greyed out and unclickable.  What I want is for my music to be sorted by Album Title followed by Track Number.  Used to be that it was sorted by Artist then Track Number, which usually ended up okay as long as the album only had one artist.  But recently, iTunes just completely arbitrarily changed itself to sorting by Song Title, which is screwing everything up.  Since the sorting order can obviously be changed, how do I get iTunes to sort the music from my iPhone in a sensible fashion?

  • How do you sort music in itunes?

I've purchased a few seasons of a tv show on iTunes but when they make it to my library, they're all in some random order. Like, 13 comes before 11, 10 comes before 1, and so on... Is there some way to sort the episodes? I tried just dragging and dropping between episodes, but Itunes doesn't allow that. I also tried clicking "name" at the top of the screen, but that included every single episode I had downloaded in total (regardless of what show it was), and sorted it as one bif list. How do I make it so that, say for example, the office season three episodes are displayed from 1-13 instead of any random order?

ben7072 - I just found this on the discussions board: "Under View Options in the View menu, check the box that says Artist. Then rearrange your shows by Artist instead of Show."
It does work. Obviously, the Artist needs to be the same a Show for it to truly fix our problem here... this is the case for me.
I'd still like to know what the real problem is though...

  • Is there a way to sort music in itunes by which ID the song was purchased under?

We have a shared family library that has built up over time using a variety of apple ids.  I'd like to be able to easily see all those that were used.

Thanks Michael... your reply/suggestion is most helpful. I have purchased a lot of songs/albums today from iTunes and wanted to add them to my custom playlists. This will help me identify the purchased songs easily. Cheers!

  • Can't Sort music on iPhone played through iTunes

I plug my iPhone into my work computer to listen to music that is only on my iPhone, but I can't sort the music in iTunes [Devices > iPhone > Music]. It's all listed alphabetically by song title. My regular iTunes Library can be sorted but I can't sort my iPhone playlists or anything.

That is how it's supposed to work when you aren't at the computer that music was synced from.
If you want to leave Apple a comment or suggestion about that feature, use the Apple - iPhone - Feedback page.

  • Can you share music between iTunes accounts on the same computer

Can you share music between iTunes accounts on the same computer? My kids iPods are under my account now with all of our shared music but they want their own iTunes accounts. I would like to transfer the music and apps that they purchased under my account to their new accounts... Is this posible?

This really isnt good. there isnt even a .tmp file on my pc.
Did you enable the display of system files and hidden files and folders?
by the way, how can i stop this from happening another time.
    Make a backup!
i had music there for over 6 years.
Well you must have updated iTunes once or twice in that time. Do you have some sort of "tidying" app that is supposed to clean "unnecessary" files. If so perhaps it is too aggressive.

  • As of today I can no longer delete music from iTunes.

    Hello friends!
I can't seem to delete music from iTunes 10.(whatever the latest version is) or on my iPhone4. I just want to change what I have on my iPhone, but then I realized that it may be an issue with iTunes after I tried to delete something there.
I only know of two ways to delete music. One is to select/ highlight want I want to delete and select the delete funtion in the edit part of the bar. The other is to do the Command D shortcut. Neither of these work as of today. Yesterday it did indeed work for I changed some stuff before work.
I am nothing of a techy sort. Here is some info, but it may be invalid.
*I have an eMac running Leopard.
*iTunes 10.4 (I think) last update a few days ago.
*iPhone 4...updated today with the new updates.
*I have my music saved on an external harddrive. I have the folder set up to put my library there.
*Edit/ Delete doesn't work, neither does Command D.
This is the only issue I've ever had. Any suggestions?

It could be an issue with permissions on your system.
I would suggest beginning your troubleshooting by running Disk Utility (In the applications--> utilities folder), and choosing "Repair Permissions".
You should also check to see if the music has a little exclamation mark next to the song -- that means it isn't able to find your music, and you'll want to doubleclick the song to make sure it plays okay.
Secondly I would suggest you run Disk Utility again and this time you run it on your external drive and select "Repair Disk".  That will check your external drive for problems.
My guess is that your iTunes Music Library file inside your User folder--> Music folder is damaged.. but see where you get with the Disk utility repairs first and let us know!

  • Sorting music by "Album by Artist / Year" on iPod touch (3rd gen.)

    Hello there,
In my music library, I have plenty of discographies per artist (eg. Bob Dylan's, Coldplay's etc...), and am finding a bit of a pain to sort it the way I want it on my iPod.
I've synced my new iPad with iTunes and copied all the music across, and when I look through the music on the iPad and select an artist, each of their albums are ordered by the year they were released in (and this happened automatically). I find this a much better way of sorting music to how I did it previously (i.e. each album ordered alphabetically).
Now, my question: How the heck do I get my iPod touch to do this?
On iTunes, I figured out you can sort the iTunes library in this way by selecting an artist in grid view, then clicking "Album by Title" above the column with album artwork and changing it to "Album by Artist / Year", however this only works for that specific artist's albums - to get your iTunes library to sort all albums this way you seemingly have to do this for each artist. Is there any way to make my whole library sort music this way without having to do that?
Essentially, how can I get my iPod to sort music the way my iPad does?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • Sorting music by genres

    Hello!
I don't understand the way music sorts in my iPhone. I bought Concert for George in iTunes and if I choose “Genres” in iTunes on my iMac it looks fine — it is one album as it has to be:
But the same album looks like separate songs on my iPhone:
And I can't listen then whole album I have to play every song separately. What can I do in that case? Yeah, it was fine in the past. I do not know what happened, or may be it is the special feature of iOS 7.0.2.

Yeah, you're right. But sorting music by genres is more convenient for me.
I just solved this problem. I put “Various Artists” in Album Artist field and it helps. In my Soundtrack section album still shows multiple times, but every unit opens the whole album. It's a bit strange but it's works.

  • How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folder within the artist folder.

How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Bleeping/Glitches when playing music in iTunes

    Hi,
Just the last couple of days i have noticed when i am playing music from iTunes on my 15" Mid 2010 Macbook Pro, I am getting intermittent digital noises like bleeping and weird audio glitches.
It is almost like an 8 bit type song which are so popular these days!
Now i know its not the encoding of the music as its happening on all different tracks when listening on random. It is also happening when i listen on headphones, through speakers connected through jack or through the built in speakers.
At present it is intermittent and will get progresively worse during a song and then I could skip and it will stop again.
I have never ex[erience anything like this before with an apple product. At present i am not seeing any visual glicthes when watching video and the laptop does not appear to be acting up in any other way, which hopefully means its not a logic board issue.
Anybody ever heard of or experienced this before? Can anybody help out?
The laptop is obviously not under warranty anymore otherwise i would just take it in, but at present i'm hoping i can diagnose and sort the problem with the aid of the the internet!
    Any help/suggestions much appreciated!
    Thanks

    Hello TheDonsCheek,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with the audio when nothing is playing in iTunes on your MacBook Pro. I recommend reviewing the following article to see if any third-party plug-ins could be causing the problem:

  • How to Sort music on play list by FILE NAME?

How to Sort music on play list by FILE NAME?

iTunes doesn't display the filename or filepath as a column so you can't sort on it. I could write a script to copy the filepath into the Sort Name field so that sorting by name would sort by filepath. Would that help? In normal circumstances however filepath order would be the same as Album by Artist, so I'm not sure what you would gain. Perhaps there is another way to approach whatever problem you think sorting by filename would solve.

  • I can only listen to music in iTunes when i'm connected to the internet. Everything seems to have uploaded onto iCloud - something I didn't sign up for. Happened with the latest iTunes update. Help!

I can only listen to music in iTunes when i'm connected to the internet. Everything seems to have uploaded onto iCloud - something I didn't sign up for. Happened with the latest iTunes update.
All of the music is still on my computer, but when I play it through iTunes, it either buffers first (when I'm connected to the internet) or it is greyed out (offline) and I can't listen to it.
This is beyond annoying. Is there anything I can do to sort this out?
    Cheers.

  • Topic: How to transfer purchased music from iTunes

Since the item <Topic: How to transfer purchased music from iTunes> is "locked" (whatever that means - typically, I got an error message when I clicked on the link!!) - I would like to state that despite downloading the iPod updater to deal with this problem, I cannot update my iPod because "the updater does not have a firmware image". I deeply resent not being able to move 100 tracks I have bought and paid for with my hard-earned money to my iPod. I trust that Apple will sort out this mess forthwith.

I have now solved this problem (almost by accident...).
Unfortunately, before you can update the iPod software on the older iPods you have to first do a Restore Factory Settings from the iPod updater (otherwise "updater cannot find firmware image'). Let the 'Restore' process run right through (it ends when the iPod fully reboots). You can then run the iPod software updater to Update from iPod 2.2 to 2.3 software, but afterwards you have to recopy all your songs from iTunes into the now empty iPod. I reloaded my iPod last night, and it took about 20-30mins using firewire for c.2400 songs. It worked for me, anyway. And the interface with iTunes is an improvement. Could have done without all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, though. Thank you, Apple.

  • How to download music from Itunes to my Google Blog

I HAVE A BLOG AND I WANT TO ADD MUSIC FROM ITUNES I PURCHASE TO PLAY AS BACKGROUND ON MY BLOG

Sorry, but that is not allowed. The terms of purchase for the iTunes Store state that all purchases are for your personal use only. You cannot use them on any public site or in any sort of public performance. Even if you bought a CD and imported the tracks from there, you could't post the tracks on a public blog without a license from the record company for that use.
If you want music as a background for your block, purchase music from one of the several sites that sell music for such use (search the web for "royalty free music"), or compose music yourself using something like GarageBand.
    Regards.
