Sorting Music

I have 4665 songs on my iPod and am trying to organise them a bit better for ease of listening to what I want when I want, especially in the car. To facilitate this I've been creating Smart Playlists in iTunes to group songs into the categories I want. For instance, I have created a Smart Playlist called Christian Music. Now, within iTunes it is easy for me to sort the songs in this playlist by album, artist, etc. However, on my iPod, when I select Music -> Playlists -> Christian Music, I get a list of all the songs in the playlist, but what I would prefer is to get a list which may be sorted by album? Or by artist? Is there a way for me to do this, or am I wasting my time creating all these playlists?!?!
Not sure whether this is an iPod or an iTunes questions, so I've posted this to both discussions. I hope someone can help me...
Joe.

Hey, thanks for your reply. Tried your suggestion, but it didn't have the desired effect. What I would like to achieve is something like the following:
Music -> Playlists -> Christian Music -> Artist -> "list of albums" -> "list of songs" etc.
For instance, I can navigate the following options on my iPod:
Music -> Artists -> Michael Jackson -> All
..............................................................Bad
..............................................................Dangerous
..............................................................History (Disc 1)
..............................................................History (Disc 2)
..............................................................Invincible
..............................................................Off The Wall
..............................................................Thriller -> "list of songs" -> Beat It
But, to select the same song (i.e. Beat It) through a Playlist seems a lot more difficult, as per the following example:
Music -> Playlists -> 80's Music -> "list of songs"
And, in my case, that involves scrolling down 682 songs to get to the one I want. So, is there a way for me to set or determine how far down I can break down the menu navigation within a playlist so that I could achieve something like:
Music -> Playlists -> 80's Music -> "list of artists" -> "list of albums" -> etc
Any suggestions as to whether this is possible, and how, would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks,
Joe.

  • Why does my new iPod touch sort music by album artist, instead of song artist?

I recently go an iPod touch 4th Gen. My old iPod sorted music by song artist, but the new one sorts it by album artist. My problem is this: There is an album called Re:generation. It was a project in which 5 DJs each made 2 songs for the album. So I enter the info for each song, but my iPod sorts it by album artist, which is listed as "Re:generation". I wanted the songs to be sorted by the 5 artists that actually made the songs, so there would be 2 songs under 5 different artists. If I wanted to listen to the whole album, I could press the album tab, scroll down to "Re:generation" and play the whole album. This all worked fine on my old iPod, but now it doesn't.
My first solution was to change the album artist on each song to the artist that created that song. But then by iPod list 5 different albums, so I can't listen to the album as a whole if I wanted to. My next solution was to erase the album artist info  for each song, but now none of the ten songs can be found under the artist tab. I have to go over to the album and pick which song I want to hear.
If you don't understand, here's an example. 2 of the songs on the Re:generation album are by Pretty Lights. I want to be able to select Pretty Lights under the artist tab, choose all songs, shuffle, and have those 2 songs play at some point. But I would also like to be able to got to the album tag, select Re:generation, and play all 10 songs in order. However, the new setup won't allow me to do this.
So I'm wondering if I can fix the problem by somehow editing the iPod's sort settings (if possible), or reverting back to the old system (if possible), and why Apple even changed the system in the first place. It seems pretty stupid to me, and I honestly see no reason to change what I thought was a perfect system.

wow, i really don't have time to read all that, but i'll give you an hint when you're in music library click "More" and then "Composers" i think that's what you're lookin for otherwise just ignore it

  • Sorting music by "Album by Artist / Year" on iPod touch (3rd gen.)

    Hello there,
In my music library, I have plenty of discographies per artist (eg. Bob Dylan's, Coldplay's etc...), and am finding a bit of a pain to sort it the way I want it on my iPod.
I've synced my new iPad with iTunes and copied all the music across, and when I look through the music on the iPad and select an artist, each of their albums are ordered by the year they were released in (and this happened automatically). I find this a much better way of sorting music to how I did it previously (i.e. each album ordered alphabetically).
Now, my question: How the heck do I get my iPod touch to do this?
On iTunes, I figured out you can sort the iTunes library in this way by selecting an artist in grid view, then clicking "Album by Title" above the column with album artwork and changing it to "Album by Artist / Year", however this only works for that specific artist's albums - to get your iTunes library to sort all albums this way you seemingly have to do this for each artist. Is there any way to make my whole library sort music this way without having to do that?
Essentially, how can I get my iPod to sort music the way my iPad does?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • Sorting music by genres

    Hello!
I don't understand the way music sorts in my iPhone. I bought Concert for George in iTunes and if I choose “Genres” in iTunes on my iMac it looks fine — it is one album as it has to be:
But the same album looks like separate songs on my iPhone:
And I can't listen then whole album I have to play every song separately. What can I do in that case? Yeah, it was fine in the past. I do not know what happened, or may be it is the special feature of iOS 7.0.2.

Yeah, you're right. But sorting music by genres is more convenient for me.
I just solved this problem. I put “Various Artists” in Album Artist field and it helps. In my Soundtrack section album still shows multiple times, but every unit opens the whole album. It's a bit strange but it's works.

  • How to Sort music on play list by FILE NAME?

How to Sort music on play list by FILE NAME?

iTunes doesn't display the filename or filepath as a column so you can't sort on it. I could write a script to copy the filepath into the Sort Name field so that sorting by name would sort by filepath. Would that help? In normal circumstances however filepath order would be the same as Album by Artist, so I'm not sure what you would gain. Perhaps there is another way to approach whatever problem you think sorting by filename would solve.

  • Why can't I sort music?

Why can't I sort music on my iPod when it's connected to PC? I can sort the music in my library by any column.

I have the same issue since the latest update.  I can no longer sort my music by song title on my iPad.  When I click on "Songs", it is sorted by Artist.  The songs aren't even sorted alphabetically by artist in this mode.  I checked on my computer and I have my music "Library" sorted by song title, not by artist.
This is very frustrating when trying to locate a song title.
    Any help?

  • Sorting Music By (lack of) Artwork

Is there a way to sort your library by those songs that lack artwork?
I want to update the songs without artwork, and need an easy way to locate them.

  • Sorting music chronologically within artist

ON my IPad2, I group my albums by artist. But the. The albums appear alphabetically within artist, and I want them to sort chronologically within artist. And I see no way to do that. Am I just missing something obvious? I don't use playlists; I just start playing at song 1 and keep going till the album is over. :-) Bit old school, I will admit, but that's how I like to do it.
How can I have my iPad show me my music in the order that I want to see it? All of my music has all the correct ID tags, including year, filled in.
    Thanks

As of iOS 5, the functionality in the music app (formerly iTunes app) for the iPad was scaled back. Not sure why, although my own theory is that is had to do with the install footprint for iOS in general, and/or iTunes Match compatabilty issues. But no evidence to present for either.
My hope is that it will be improved in iOS6. However, I tend to listen to music by specific album and seldom if ever use playlist or other groupings. Personally I'd rather see an improved codec for playback over most other features, but that's another issue.

  • Sorting Music titel in store

Did anybody now how it is possible to sort the music titels in the iTunes store?
When I search a music titel I get a list of many titels of different artists. Now I tried to sort this list by artist or album or the length of titel.
But it seems, that this is not possible.
    Any ideas?

Go to the Finder - use the keys: command-F
When that 'search' window opens, use the pull-downs to search on:
    • kind: music
...then look on the right and hit the '+' icon to add another filter/attribute for the search. Use the menu that appears for 'other' (sorted alphabetically) to select 'Track number' -- Hit [√] to place this attribute in the pull-down menu.
Search for all music files with track number of whatever - or just use track number...your choice.
Go back and add or subtract filters from the 'other' list as required and then save your crafted search in the sidebar.
You're now using the Finder to search on track number for MP3s.

  • Sorting Music in iTunes

I am importing all of my music from my hard drive over into iTunes. I notice that it sorts it by artist, then by album, but then my track number. Is there any way to change it to where it sorts like the following: artist, album, song (in alphebetical order) Thank you!

Well, no. That's not what I mean. Like, I like it being sorted by the artist, and then the artists are sorted by the album, but then, after the album, it is by track #. I want that to change to the alphebetical order of that song.

  • Sorting Music from 2 different Itune accounts in 1 Library??

I have music from 2 different i-tunes accounts co-mingled in one library on one of my laptops - I'm not exactly sure how that happened - maybe trying to synch the wrong ipod to the wrong computer? Is there easy way to sort a library by user-account name so I can delete the tracks the computer is not authorized to play? It's tedious to go through the library album-by-album/song-by-song and delete them individually. Thanks!!

And yes, I know the other solution would be to put all of my music on the mac mini, but that's at my office so then I can't use the iPhone with the macbook at home.  And, I don't want to have to take one of my computers to work or vice-versa just to solve this problem.  Anyway, the question is not 'how do I get the music onto my iPhone'.  I just wanted to know if there was any way I could use my iPhone with both of my macs but it seems the answer is no.  As I said, I'll be returning to an android phone as soon as someone buys this crappy iPhone 5c on ebay and then I won't have the problem anymore
As for anti-piracy?????  It is so ridiculously easy to pirate music despite this bizarre system where you can't use 3 bits of technology made by the same company, together?  I would have thought it's more to do with encouraging people to buy their music from the iTunes store rather than other sources.  Maybe I'm just a cynic.....
Have you considered an external hard drive?  Also, if you don't like the Apple procedure, then tell Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • Sorting Music within a Playlist

I am having a strange problem crop up that just started happenning recently. I am using the latest version of Apple TV system software along with the latest version of iTunes. When I create a playlist in iTunes I always sort it by track # by clicking on the appropriate column header. It used to be that on Apple TV, it would be sorted by what I set. Lately, it seems to be sorting randomly. I examined the tags with a tag editor and found nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas? I store the music locally on the Apple TV. Any help would beappreciated since it is an annoying problem.

I tried creating and re-creating the playlist to no avail. Note that the songs appear in perfect order on my ipod. The only other thing I do different than most is that I manage my own music directories.

  • Sorting Music on the iPod

I was wondering if it is possible to sort albums on the iPod by year of release. I know how to make iTunes do this but when I transfer my library over to the iPod it is sorted by Artist in alphabetical order (which is perfect), then under each artist the albums are listed in alphabetical order. This is where I want the albums in the order of year of release.
Also I am using the 5th Generation iPod and Windows XP Pro for this.
Any ideas on how to do this?

So is this only possible if I use a Mac and not Windows. I did find this option in the Windows XP iTunes but all it did was add the Year to the Library display in iTunes itself. It did not changed the way that the albums are displayed on the iPod. Maybe I wasn't being specific enough though. The section of the iPod that I am talking about is when you select Music>Artists and then have selected an artist. This is where I would like it to be sorted by year. I beleive your suggestion would make it so that if you select Music>Albums then it would list by year of release in that section.
Thank you for the suggestion, although it was not 100% what I was looking for.

  • IPhone 4s sorting music by Album Artist? Applies to Compilations?

I was scrolling through my iPhone looking for a song, I saw an artist listed as "Hit Singles (1980-1990)". Clicking on it netted me a song by Genesis from their album of the same name. Which made me curious, so I scrolled again and found another "artist" that was, in fact, the name of the album in question.  A Jackson 5 track that I've not been able to find on my iPhone is listed in iTunes as by the Jackson 5 with the Album Artist of "Various Artists"
So I'm mucking about in iTunes and finding that this applies to a lot of compilations and trying to correct some of this nets me an artists listing that seems to willfully skip over the artists on those compilations.  As in (and this is a crappy example):
    Beach Boys
    Beastie Boys
Various Artists [being a Beastie Boys song on a soundtrack]
    Beatles.
And choosing Various Artists gets me a list of all the compilations on my iPhone, which is... awkward at best, frustrating at worst.  I've never had this problem on any other iPod.  What's going on and how can I fix this apart from trying to correct a metric ton of incomplete data acquired over the past several years?

  • Sorting Music By Release Date

    Hi guys.
I'm new to this Forum so apologies if this has already been asked.
I want to sort my music on my iTunes in Release Date order not just the year so its shows an artist complete discography from first release to current release. Is there a way of being able to do this ?

In iOS 7.0.x, that changed, and albums were sorted by release date in ascending order (i.e. newest at the bottom). Now, in iOS 7.1.x, albums are sorted by release date in descending order (i.e. newest at the top).
It was changed on your system, not mine.
Mine were never sorted by release date. It has always been sorted Album by Artist.
    Try this.
    In iTunes, select the iPhone.
Then go to iTunes menu View > View options and select a sort, then sync the iPhone.
