Sorting of e-mails

I get a lot of mails from a Yahoo-group and want to sort them into into a separate folder. So
I created a new inbox (folder named yahoo) and used “Rules” to setuo the sorting criterias. It does not work. The mails go into my in-box and not to the Yahoo folder. However if I I select a mail and go to "Menu Messages" I can select "move the mail back to the Yahoo" folder where it have never appeared. I am using a Macmini with OSX10.4.7..What can cause the problem??

Hello Dan!
Thank you very much for your comments to my problem. I am afraid I did not present the problem in an easy to understand way and also I can not follow your sugestion. If I have had your e-mail adress I could have sent you a screenshot that would have been more explaning. However it looks like I have solved the problem by adding one more critera:
Day for the dispatch of the mail " less than 3 days"
If you are interested let me have your e-mail and I will send you a screen shot.
regards Erik

  • How can I get one email address in an address group to sort first in mail?

I have a group with about 100 contacts.  Mail sorts these contacts in a way I can not fathom.  I would like one of the contacts to appear "first" in the list of Mail addressees.  I've tried starting the contact name an "A" and a "1".  I've tried starting the email name and isp name the same way.  Each time, the contact appears in a different place in the Mail address list but never first.  Thanks

Sorry, I just found a similar question which was answered by VK as:
"I'm not sure what Mail uses to determine the order the emails are listed when you do this. It may be related to the internal UIDs address book assigns to all contacts. those are assigned in the order the contacts were added to Address Book. this is not terribly useful."
VK proceeded to offer a software technique for resorting addressees which I could not understand.
    It looks like I'm stuck.
There's another question I ask every time I'm in an Apple store, "why not list the groups associated with each contact in the lower right box of each contact; next to the latest revision date.  So easy and so useful.  I never get a good answer.
Generally, I find Apple programmers the best in the world for making things intuitive.  Not so with Mail... :-(

  • Attachments Not Showing up for Sort in Sent Mail

In Lion Mail, the small paper clip icon that indicates an attachment is not showing up in the sent messages list. I'm using classic view and often I need to sort by attachments. I recently upgraded to an iMac with Lion. The attachment icons are appearing for emails that I sent in the past on my old machine and imported into Mail when I set it up, but any emails I've sent in Mail 5.1 are not showing the attachment icon for sorting.
When I mail myself an attachment, the attachment icon IS appearing in my inboxes lists, but not in the sent list.
I've played with attachments settings to see if I can figure out why, but had no luck. Anyone know a solution? Thanks!

Hi Michael - I too have exactly the same problem in Lion. It seems to be a bug.
A minor one, given all the other much larger issues I have with Lion.
I'm living with it in the expectation that someone will fix it. I notified it ages ago - long before the recent Lion update.
I am mainly using Snow Leopard. This problem doesn't happen in Snow.

  • Sort function in mail, help?

When I try to sort mail by name, mail won't go to sorted name first.   After hitting "from" tab, sort goes to z's first, then you have to find the name you sorted for? help?  Don't think this is a function of upgrading to Yosemite. . .

    Hi Hendo541,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  You are almost there!  When you click on "Sort by From" again you will get the option to change the sort order from descending to ascending.

  • "Sort by" and Mail

Whenever I restart my mail, the "Sort By" tab changes back to "Sort by Unread". Is there anyway to keep this on another option without having to reset it every time I start up mail?

Click on Finder. Hold down the 'option' key and choose 'Go' from the menu.
With the 'option' key still held down, choose Library from the menu.
Navigate to and trash this file:
    ~/Library/Preferences/apple.com.mail.plist
    Restart your machine.

  • Weird sort order in Mail

Mail is sorting my messages very strangely. For example, I have a folder with about 2000 messages ranging from sometime in 2004 until this morning. When iPhone Mail pulls it up the first page of messages is from sometime in late 2006. It gets the total number right, so I think it's seeing everything...it's just picking a weird (and not particularly useful) timeframe to show.
Any idea what might be going on - and, more importantly, how to fix it?

I can't help you, but I join you with the same problem ....
Mail downloaded from some time in the past ...
But only for sent folder. In .mac my sent folder actually orders the mails strangely too as opposed to my trash folder that in both the iphone and .mac are ordered properly.
    Anyone any help?

  • Problems sorting messages? (Mail.app, Lion, IMAP)

I'm wondering if (how?) I'm the only person with this problem...
I generally run with a window just open to my Inbox(-es).  That window is 2-columns, message list and message contents.  The hidden "Mailboxes" pane has several accounts under Inbox, most/all of which are IMAP servers.
Here's the problem: The column heading for the list of messages reads "Sort by date".  However, the message list isn't sorted by date at all.  It appears that "Date" may be "date received", but I can't be certain of this.  In previous versions of Mail.app, there was a distinction between sorting by date of the message or the date received; in general I prefer the former.  But that doesn't seem to account for this:
The options for this are Sorted by: Date, Ascending.
The interesting aspect of this is that if I choose one particular Inbox (i.e., the inbox from any account, rather than the "consolidated" listing), messages are sorted properly.  It's only when I have the view of all the inboxes (that is, the "Inbox" itself is selected, rather than any of the accounts under it) that sorting goes awry.
I do have lots of rules defined, moving certain messages from one place to another, and applying colors.  But this hadn't previously (nor would I expect it to) cause this issue.
Does anyone else have this problem, or any ideas on how to fix it?

Apparently, I was either the only person to have an issue with this, or the only one bothered enough to write to the group!
I do have a solution, however.
From what I was able to tell, the issue was that the menu items for sorting, including the "Sort by" in the Mail window header bar and the View -> Sort by menu simply displayed "Date" as the option.
Recalling the old trick of using the Option key while selecting a menu item, "Date" changed to "Date Sent".  It has not changed back to "Date"; now holding down Option changes it "Date Received", and the menu item continues to read "Date Sent", which is the desired behavior.
Unfortunately, Mail was stuck in a state where both these indications simply said "Date"; I've now apparently changed this and the indicator reads properly (and the sort order is as expected).
I hope if this bugs anyone else this explanation (?) will help.

  • Sort out the Mail Rules

How can I sort the mail rules, say by Description or by name.
I have a lot of them and they are sorted by the time I added them.
I KNOW you can sort them manually, but surely there has to be a way to sort them by a click of a mouse, or a script or something.
    Thanks

  • Can I sort messages in Mail by TWO headers at once?

I'm trying to find some photos that someone sent me in the past month.  However, I don't remember the person's name.  So I'm trying to sort the messages by 'attachment,' and then by 'date.'
However, when I do this, the 2nd sort doesn't keep the original 'Attachment' sort order.  So what I need to be able to do is sort by two criteria at once.
Is it possible to do this?

Can't do it in the same window (folder).
    Here's what you can do.
Make a new mailbox (folder) in the sidebar by selecting "New Mailbox..." from the Mailbox menu. Name it something appropriate.
Do your first sort by date in the regular folder you use. Then select all of the ones of the appropriate date and move them into the new folder (drag and drop). In the new folder, sort by attachment.
Once done, you can move the subset back into the regular folder.

  • Snow Leopard Mail Address Book does no longer sort names

    Hi,
I noticed that, after I installed Snow Leopard, the address book I access in Mail does no longer show entries sorted by last names although I set the the address book I access from the dock to do so and it works fine. I thought they're one and the same. How come there is this discrepancy and is there a way to resolve the issue?
    Best
    Frank

    Frank,
The Address Book application opened from the Dock responds to its preference setting for this sort. Quit Mail, and then confirm the sort you want to see in the AB application -- you can choose not only Last Name sort, but whether Last Name appears before First Name, as I am sure you know.
Now relaunch Mail, and when you access from Mail it should now have the same sort you selected in the AB app. Mail is apparently picking up the preference setting in the AB app at the time it launches, and does not change that until you have quit Mail, and then next relaunch it.

  • Sent items in mail box are sorted from sender name

    Hi friends,
I just purchased P780 two days back & trying to configure my corporate mails ( & also my Yahoo mails ) on it using Active Sync. Everything works fine apart from the fact that when I am going to the sent items, it is sorting all my mails by the sender name ( which is me ) & I am not able to find any configuration where I can change it to sort using receiver name.
Please help me in sorting out this issue.
    Regards
    Rajesh

I have the same problem on an A5500 8" tablet.
Telling us it's a 'known issue' is not a useful response. Please provide a solution.

  • Mail Sort Order and Logitech Control Center 3.1

LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader.osax is a Scripting Addition in /library/scriptingadditions that reproducibly causes the sort order in Mail to revert to Date Received/Newest on Top. With LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader.osax in the Scripting Additions folder, you can change the sort order for a folder, but when you click on another folder and return to the original, the sort order reverts to Date Received/Newest on Top.
Removing LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader.osax and restarting Mail remedies this problem.
Can anyone else confirm this occurs in their system as well (10.6.1)?

I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) from 10.5 yesterday and noticed this Mail sort problem straight away. Concurrently I upgraded to Default Folder 4.3.3 and LCC 3.1. Following the advice of you guys, I've excluded Mail.app in System Prefs/Default Folder/Settings/Advanced and lo and behold date sort is working normally again.
I mean, I've spent 15 years having most recent at the bottom and it's very wrong to have it at the top!

  • Sorting and disposing of dead mail

I am currently working for a NPO which has massive mail outs.
We need to sort through the mail and remove from our mailing list, mail that bounces or is dead.
It would also be great to better manage unsubscriptions as well.
Is there a method we can achieve this in Mail or another program, to take some of the tedium and errors out of the process?
    Suggestions much appreciated.
