Sorting of playlists

The single thing I dislike the most about spotify is the sorting of the playlists and songs. The most important is this option:
++ You should be able to sort the playlists either (or in combination) 1. alphabetically, 2. size (number of songs) 3. most played ++
Songs in playlists should also been possible to be sorted in most played order.

  • Is there a way to sort a playlist on my iPhone alphabetically by Artist?

Is there a way to sort a playlist on my iPhone alphabetically by Artist?  I can do it when I view the playlist through iTunes on my computer, but when I view it on my iPhone's iPod, it is sorted by the date the songs were added.  I add the songs through iTunes, and I can sort it by Artist with no problem in the iTunes window.  However, when I look at the playlist through the iPod on my iPhone, the new songs are down at the bottom, no matter who the Artist is.
If it matters I am running iOS 4.3.10 on an iPhone 4 and I have iTunes 10.4.0.80 on my computer.
    Thanks.

    Ottonomy, here's what to do.
Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the iPhone's playlist in an iTunes window. Copy/Paste the entire playlist into a new(!) playlist in iTunes, not on your iPhone. Then resort the playlist. After you sort it, Copy/Paste it to a new(!) playlist on your iPhone. Now delete the old playlist on your iPhone and rename the new playlist the name you want it to be (probably the same name as the old playlist).
The downside to this method is that you have to do it every time you add a song to the playlist. Unfortunately, I don't think there's another way.

  • Is it possible to sort a playlist alphabetically...

Is it possible to sort a PLAYLIST or ARTIST songlist alphabetically in itunes and retain that order on ipod (Classic)? Some of my playlists or artist's songlists have literally hundreds of songs and it is cumbersome to try to locate a particular song when using the ipod. I realize that the songs are alphabetized under the song category but I would like them alphabetized by song in a particular playlist or artist songlist for ease of access. Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance

Anyone? I agree with @sully1961 – I have a playlist for "4 & 5 star" tracks and sometimes would like to listen to a specific track followed by other 4 & 5 star rated tracks. As it is now, they sort by album and I can never find what I'm looking for. I swear in the past the sort order was maintained from the sort order in iTunes – am I mistaken?

  • IPod (Mini) refuse to sort smart playlists

    Hello helpful ones.
I've got a rather annoying problem. I have a few smart playlists on my iPod Mini, like most people. I've set my iTunes to NOT autosync with the iPod. This is because the iPod does not have enough storage space for this feature.
Anyway, take the "recently added"-playlist for example. I've set it up to return the 50 newest songs, and sort them by their title/name. Whenever I drag-n-drop a new file onto the iPod, it appears in the playlist but allways ends up at the bottom. The iPod is totally disregarding my sorting instructions.
Playlist details, roughly translated from Norwegian:
    Match the following criteria:
    <Date added> <is in the last> <3> <months>
    Limit to <50> <songs> selected/sorted by <most recently added>
    <auto update>
iTunes on the other hand, sorts the playlist just fine. I seems like iTunes won't bother to update the playlist on the iPod, for some reason (I guess this is how it works, as it seems that the iPod itself aren't capable of much database handling).
I'm using an iPod Mini with firmware version 1.4 (all though it seems like this problem has been there with previous versions, but I can't really remember) and iTunes version 6.0.1.3 (Norwegian).
Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong, or why my iPod is acting up?
Thanks for taking the time to read this

I read most of that thread before posting my question. It seems like the problems mentioned in that scenario gets solved when connecting the iPod to a computer.
That's what I can't understand here. When browsing the playlist on the iPod from within iTunes, everything seems updated and ok. But when I'm accessing the same playlist on the iPod itself after disconnecting it from the computer, the newly added songs just gets appended to the bottom of the list. I.e. no sorting of titles.
Just for the record, I completly restored both the iPod firmware (erasing everything) and the iTunes installation on my computer. I also reinstalled the ipodservice-thing that runs when you connect the device.

It must be here somewhere, but I can't see how to sort my playlists in alphabetical order by artist or album.

  • Sorting Video Playlists

I hope I'm not missing something obvious here.
Whenever I create a video playlist, and add to it, the iPod always shows the contents of the playlist in reverse alphabetical order.
Is there a way to have the iPod sort video playlist contents alphabetically?

    Guy's we are speculating.
Clearly this is software version 1.0 and improvements will come in time, if you have any requests you should send them to feedback, Apple are happy to receive feedback, for example I'm not convinced the menu listings are as good as they could be but I'm glad Apple didn't rush in and lock us into file listing system without giving us the opportunity to let them know what we felt by feedback.
As for the bugs ???. I've read more posts than most and apart maybe from the waking from sleep issue, I haven't seen an issue that can be attributed to a bug. Bilbo if you have a problem you should start a post, but remember issues can arise from a number of sources and if someone is unable to help you because they have no knowledge of your equipment and set up, it doesn't mean it's a software bug in the tv or itunes. Surely you realise that there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of us out there that have no problems at all.

  • Sort a playlist in a special order

    Hello,
is ther a way to sort a playlist in the following order:
    First: Artist (ascending)
    Second: Title (ascending)
    Third: Duration (Decending)
How can i achive that ?
    Thanks Matthias

If only we had access to the SQL engine hiding inside iTunes it would be easy. However sorting 30,000 songs with vbScript would be painfully slow. If you can narrow things down so that you are working with say a few album artists at a time it might be practical. Looking at the iTunes COM SDK I can't seem to find a way to affect the *Play Order* of an existing playlist, however adding tracks to a new playlist in the order that you want should be possible. The script would need to gather the indexes of the selected tracks and the other properties you need for sorting into some kind of array, sort this array, and then construct the new playlist by adding the tracks in the given order. If you are in to writing scripts then you might want to look at my scripts page in case anything there gives you inspiration, otherwise I'll try to have a go at putting something together. SortDateAdded contains a sort method and Unconsolidated has a playlist building routine. It should be possible to automatically "uncheck" all but the longest track with each track name. You could then review the list in case you want to change things.

  • How can I get my Recently Added back to how it was before I reset? Also, is there any way to sort a playlist by the numbering (i.e. 1, 2, 3)?

Basically, I reset my computer (not rebooted; reset, as in wiped it clean) and backed up all my music. After putting the songs back onto my iPhone, the playlists like My Top Rated and Recently Played were empty, of course. For Recently Added, all of my songs were in there. I imported my playlists and most were back to normal. However, the first 13 songs in my Recently Added were the same as before I reset my computer, which I found really odd, so I figured that they were sorted somehow for that to happen--they had to be. The rest of the songs were all of my other songs.
Anyways, I can't find a way to get my Recently Added to just have those 13 songs and it's really irritating me. Is there a way??? Yes, I've tried limiting to 13 items. I've also tried sorting by name, and the "most recently/least recently added" options didn't work either. How can I sort it by numbering, as in the actual numbers next to the Artist name???
Also, notice how the first 13 songs are sorted by Name and after those songs, the rest are sorted by Artist Name. So, I'm thinking this issue is fixable. It's peeving me!

A smart playlist like "Recently Added" is based on the date that a track is added to your library.  Since you erased your computer and re-built your library from scratch, all your tracks are considered "recently added" because iTunes assigned a new date to each song as it was re-added to your library.
Instead of re-building your library from scratch, and re-importing certain playlists you had saved, it might've been better to have simply recovered your "iTunes Library.itl" file.  That is the index that points to where all your song files are, and contains all your playlists, and has properties such as ratings, last played date, and date added.  As long as the native files for your songs are in the same place, you could re-use your "iTunes Library.itl" file if you saved a copy before you erased your computer (always back that file up along with your native files, the .itl file IS your library).
As far as why the Recently Added playlist starts with 13 particular songs, then proceeds with the rest of all your songs in alphabetic order, it is possible that either you (or iTunes) started adding the songs back with the 13 most recent songs you had previously added to your library before it was erased, and once those were added then things proceeded by artist in alphabetical order.  Not sure, but there's really nothing you can do about that other than replace your .itl file with the original version if you still have it somewhere.

  • Sorting by Playlist

I am in the process of sorting all my music into playlists. I have about 1200 songs, and about half of them are part of a playlist. The problem is I have lost track of which songs have already been assigned to playlists and which ones haven't. I know you can right-click on a song to see if a song is part of a playlist, but that process will be time consuming. Is there a way I can sort all the music to see which was are not assigned to a playlist??

Why doesn't iTunes anymore let me manually drag the songs (in a playlist) in the order I want the. You used to be able to just drag the song # and move it up or down. When I try it down, the song just snaps back and stays in placer...
Make sure that a) Shuffle is turned off, b) you're sorting on the leftmost column (with the numbers in it), and c) it's not a smart playlist.
And I HAVE NO IDEA WHATSOEVER WHAT the "sorting" Tab is about in the Get-INfo window. The right side lists a bunch of fields....Sort Name....Sort Arist....Sort Album........? No explanation as to what goes into these fields. What are these for? What I am I supposed to type in thes? -- david
You can use the Sorting fields to tell iTunes how to alphabetize your library without changing how the fields are displayed. If you want Johnny Cash to be sorted by his last name, for instance, enter "Cash Johnny" in the Sort Artist field of those tracks. (You can enter it in one, then control-click the track and use "Apply Sort Fields..." to copy it to the others.)

  • Sorting Smart Playlists

I have created some folders in iTunes to better manage my content, but I am unable to put my smart playlists in the order I want. I am placing the playlists inside the folder, but iTunes automatically sorts this in alphabetical order by playlist name. Unfortunately, this is not appropriate for what I want to achieve...
Any suggestions anyone? It doesn't seem I can drag and drop the playlists manually into a suitable order...

sing digits at the beginning of the playlist name isn't
appropriate as some of the names actually start with digits already!
Sorry, but that's the only way - well, you could use characters instead of digits of course. Or split them up into even more folders until the automatic sorting doesn't bug you anymore.
    Alexander.

  • Color sorting songs/playlists for library???

Is there an option, widget, or something I could use to keep track of what songs in my music library are listed on which play lists. Something along the lines of gmail and its colored lables.
The round about way I have to update my iTunes music library, if I am doing a rash of downloading, I forget what I've already added to my iPhone list.
playlists are such a visual thing, I just think utilizing our color vision would be cool.
secondary question that I havent spent much research on: I am only using iTunes because I have an iPhone, otherwise I love winamp. Is there any sort of way I can enqueue music from the my music folder in iTunes the way you can with winamp. I hate making playlists every day I want to listen to different 5-10 particular tracs in my music library. I want to be able to go to my music directory, right click the album folders or track titles and select "enqueue". Thats it.

Hi there I totally agree with you Sucks monkey balls  Well, well, well, I SUGGEST to structure the playlists: for example by GENRE (ie JAZZ)and then by AUTHOR or INTERPRETEE (ie MILES DAVIS) or, at least ALPHABETICALLY and not by creation date!! Sorry if my English is not very precise, hope you understand it!

  • Default sorting for playlists

I have Itunes on 3 computers, so whenever I make changes to playlists on one, I like to update the other 2 with those changes. The best way I find is to use "export library " and export my most recent playlists. I then delete all the playlists on my other 2 computers and import the library into Itunes. My problem is, every time I do that, the playlists are sorted by numbers as opposed to name, which is how I want them sorted. I have 50 playlists or so, and it is a pain to click on each playlist and click "name" to highlight it in blue. Is there anyway to automatically have the playlists default to sort by name. It never really bothered me before because I would jsut click on "name" whenever I was in the playlist, but when I upload the playlists onto my ipod, it keeps that sort order. So instead of all my aeromsith tracks being alphabetical on my ipod, they are sorted by number (which I never had any control over in teh first place).
I hope it is not too confusing and an answer exists.
    Thanks.
I have tried pretty much everything I have seen on this discussion board...apply sort field, sorting each song, etc...none of them work. The playlists always default back to sorting by number.

Hmm, dunno then. If you want to step me through the process you use to do this, I can try it on my PCs and see if the same thing happens.
Maybe it was designed that way, for all I know. You can also do a Help > Provide iTunes feedback and send your comments to Apple.

  • Sorting out playlists after iTunes Match

I just completed my iTunes Match thing, and i was happy.
But then realised that i can't sync particualr playlists using iTunes, to my iPhone.
Why is this. Why can't i sort my music, the way i used to, using iTunes, then syncing up the playlists that i want and th emusic that i want.
    What i'm seeing is this;
Instead of the usual sync opions. Now i'm afraid to sync my iPhone incase it removes or adds music that i don't want on my iPhone at this time.
Is there a way to get the out Sync opions back?

And so now i discover that all my iPhone playlists are gone, all the music is there, but i have no playlists, nothign.
Do i need to recreate all my playlists again using my iPhone?
If so, i wish i'd never used iTunes Match now. Its just created more problems then it sovled.
Thanks Apple, thanks for infoming me that i'd lose all my playlists on my iPhone, and now have to spend god knows how long rebuilding them.
PUT THE IPHONE MUSIC SYNC OPIONS BACK TO THE WAY THERE WERE!
If not, then i guess i might end up taking all my DRM free music someplace else, couse i feel, lately using Apple is far much like hard work.

  • Anyone have a work around for sorting Smart Playlists in Match?

So I was surprised by changing a couple criteria in some smart playlists, they sync to my iPhone.  Obviously from reading around here, play counts are not updating when played with match and are ignored by the iOS device.  Also, sorting seems to be totally random regardless of how the playlist is setup in iTunes.
Anyone got any tricks for these things?
    Thx

  • Any one know how to sort a playlist by shuffle order in itunes 11?

Before you could just click on the number column after shuffling and it would sort by what was up next. I would like to see all my song info not just the name and album that the 'up next' pop up gives.

I've just discovered, by accident, that if I double-click on a song in the Up Next playlist, iTunes will begin playing that song and remove the earlier ones above it from the list. So if you don't like what's coming up, double-click the first one in the list that you do like.
To add songs in the Up Next to a Playlist, highlight them; click on the first one, shift click on the last one and it does this (or CTRL + click to select only the songs that you want):
To add those to an existing Playlist, you have to right-click the blue area of the list - but importantly, do not click on the arrow. Although it will give you an "add to playlist" option, it will only add the last track. To add every highlighted track, you must right-click and see this menu:
    and not this one:
You may have noticed, I said existing Playlist. I haven't noticed a "create new playlist" option when I'm doing this.
By the way, I have no idea why it says "Mr Trick" on the "wrong" add-to menu. I have no Mr Trick in my Library, but that comes up frequently.
    Any good?
