Sorting photos manually in events

I have all my events sorted 'manually' and want to have my photos in each event set the same way, so I can change the order of them instead of sticking with the order iPhoto puts them in. However when I am in an event and try to sort photos 'manually' instead of 'by date', it wont let me do this (the manually option is not highlighted like the 'by date, by keyword, by title' etc are). I have tried resetting all my events to 'by date' but that made no difference. Is there a way to sort my photos in each events 'manually' or do i just have to leave them in the order iphoto chooses?

Manual sorting of photos within event is not available - and the "order iPhoto choose" is the order you took the photos in - it is data and time order
For other sorting use albums

Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

Only albums can be sorted manually. Events can only be sorted automatically according to one of the predefined settings "Date, Keywords, Title, Rating".
If you need a manual sort order, selectaall photos in the event and create an album: File > New Album

  • Sorting photos within an event

I'm trying to find a way to rearrange my photos within an event. According to the instructions in help:
Sort photos within Events (but not the Events themselves): Select Photos in the Source list, choose View > Event Titles, and then choose View > Sort Photos.
Trouble is, when I try to choose Event titles, it is grayed out. If I go to the event and then select view>sort photos, manually is grayed out and by date and desending are checked.
    Anyone have a suggestion.

    Did you read the answer?
Events are a very limited form of organising. They are sorted on date and time only. If you want more flexibility then you need to use Albums, where there a virtually no limitations.
That is the answer! You can not sort photos within events.

  • Why am I unable to sort photos manually?

The option to sort photos manually and the option to reset manual sort are grayed out. Why?
    Here is a screenshot: http://f.cl.ly/items/1h1b1m2p3b1O3a1O2V2i/Screen%20Shot%202011-10-03%20at%207.36 .00%20PM.png

Because you are in the Library and Manual Sorting is not an option there. To have manual sorting create an Album and you can do as you want.

  • Sort photos in an event manually

Why would the sort manually option be grayed out, not able to choose?
I went into event click view, click sort photos but the manually option is not available.
Is there a way to change this?
    Thanks

Because manual sorting of events or photos within an event is not a feature of iPhoto '09 - and no there is now way to turn it on
albums can be manually sorted - events are (by default) in time/date order

  • Sorting photos manually

Does anybody know how I can have my photos sorted by date, and then move them around manually after wards to fine tune the order? I know how to go into view, then have them sort by date, but the 'sort manually' option is faded out and unselectable (for lack of a better word). Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

In the event view of your library you can not reorder photos manually
In photo view with event titles turned off you can manually sort your photos (but this does not change the order in events - just in the photo view - and in photo view with event titles turned off loading may be slow since there are so many photos to image
Generally albums are the place to control the specific order of photos
You also can change the time and date on photos so that the event sort by date/time will do what you want

I am unable to sort my photos manually. The manual label is greyed out. the reset manual sort is greyed out. I have not found the way to activate them - this is iphoto 11. how do i rectivate these 2 items?I just want to move my photos around as i did in past versions. any help welcome
sorry cant paste image here -

Because sometimes you want to see photos in a different sequence
Which is exactly what Albums are designed for.

  • Cant sort photos manually

Recently imported some photos and in the event file for the photos I am UNABLE to sort manually. I can sort by any other criteria however. How can I sort manually? Do I need to create a new album to sort manually? It appears so. But this is a PAIN when I have several thousand photos and I do not want 5,000 folders in my iphoto screen.

Events are a very basic automatic organization for people who do not what to bother and generally are best left in their default time/date organization
In photos view you can sort manually if you turn show event titles off but with a large library launching iPhoto in photos view can be slower
folders do not show on your iPhoto screen - they only show in the source pane on the left and folders hold albums or other folders - a great organization tool
Albums hold photos and can be sorted manually - with albums, smart albums and folders you can build very complex organization systems that exactly match your needs

  • Album order (after "sort photos manually") not staying

I have an album of about 500 pictures (from my 10,000 library). I sorted the pictures in it manually, but every time I close iPhoto and then reopen it, the order is messed up a bit with random pictures are out of order.
    any ideas?
    roger

I was unable to duplicate your problem with an album of 16 photos. Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Did you check to see if the sort order was still set to Manually?

  • Sorting photos inside events

Still wondering whether it is possible to sort photo's within events (manually). The I Photo Help says the following...
**Sort photos (regardless of Event): Select Photos in the Source list, choose View and make sure Event Titles is unchecked, and then choose View > Sort Photos.
    ...But these instructions don't work.
it is clearly not possible to click on "Event>Title" since it is greyed out, so you can't get into an event after you have selected Photos in the Source List (which I assume means Library here).

The Help file is not correct - you can not sort photos manually in events
You can manually sort photos in Photo view move but not in events
You can sort photos in albums

  • How do I sort photos the way I want them to appear within an Event? Sort Manually is always grayed out. SAR

Keep trying but sort manually stays grayed out. All I want to do is sort photos within one event the way I want them to appear.

    It's like iTunes:
You can view an music album on iTunes and there are all the tracks. The hit single, the annoying filler that they stuck on, all there.
Or you can create a Playlist of just the singles, or tracks from various albums that work together well, or just your favourite tracks from different artists and so on.
In iPhoto: the Event has all the photos taken at that time. So, all 812 photos you took at the Wedding. All there.
An Album allows you to just use the 50 best ones, and possibly group them with 12 from the Rehearsal and five others from the day after. Just the best shots. Or bunch all the photos of the groom from birth to today, or all the photos of the bride and her dog. Or whatever. Really, the limit is your imagination.
Like Playlists in iTunes, images in an iPhoto album are simply referenced from the Library. So a photo can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space.
Then, once you couple your imagination with metadata...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Manual Sort Photos

I can sort my Events manually. Now I would like to sort my photos manually within the Events. Under View - Sort Photos ... Manually is dimmed as is "Reset Manual Sort." Is it possible to sort photos manually?

Thanks for the comments, but that doesn't really solve the problem. Remember, I'm trying to group photos so I can select the ones I want to remove from my hard drive. If I did that in an album, I would only be removing the photos from the album, not from the library and hard drive altogether.
The workaround I found so far is a bit painful:
    - create an album from the event in question
    - sort the photos to group them so it's easy to pick the ones I want to delete
    - rate the photos I want to remove with a specific rating, different than the ones I want to keep
    - go back to the event
    - find the photos based on rating
    - move them to trash
    - remove the album (or keep it if I'm going to make an album anyways)
Anybody has a simpler recipe ?
Also I like the "Events" view very much, where I can skim over large icons that represent each event to see pictures. Is there a similar view for Albums somewhere ?
PS: I did send feedback already, thanks for the suggestion.

  • Photos from recent event not appearing in photo library

I have recently uploaded photos from a recent trip. I have named the event and it is listed and accessible through 'events'. The event is also listed under the 'recent' menu. However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
I want to sort the photos into my own order manually, but when I access the photo through the events menu, the option to sort photos manually is blanked out.
Any help would be gratefully received! Many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
Are you referring to the Photos mode in iPhoto? That mode cannot be sorted manually. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
A workaround is to create a regular album and add the entire library to it. Then you will be able to manually sort the photos. New photos added to the library and the album will initially be located at the bottom of the album's window.
Albums give you the most control over displaying of the photos.
