Sorting Playlist order?

This may be a ridiculous question but can you sort a playlist in iTunes that will show up other than in the order a song was added or track listing? I've tried reserving a playlist order so the most recent tracks added appear at the beginning of the list but it won't keep that order once synced to the ipod. Basically I'm just trying to keep the most recent songs on top. I'm thinking there's an easy way to do this and I'm just missing it.
Any advice is appreciated, sorry if this is a very newb question,
Thank you,
Jason

In your smart playlist settings, set a limit for the number of tracks in the list (but make it higher than you'll need if you don't actually want a limit), then pick the order you want the tracks to be in from the "selected by" drop down.
For some reason this hasn't been working for play count (and so presumably might not work for some other options, if definitely works if you arrange by album), so try turning off live updating on a top 25 type list.

  • Playlist order sorts differently from music library and ipod

When I resort a playlist in iTunes and transfer it to my iPod I notice the songs take on a different order. Any one know how to get the desired playlist order to "stick" so it's preserved on the iPod?

If you manually manage music... on iTunes 11, go to the top left corner and there will be a pull down bar. Click "show menu bar". From there, go to view, then show sidebar. Magically, it looks like the previous versions of iTunes. Took me 3 hours of trial and error and searching through forums to figure out. Tried calling Apple to have them walk me through it and they said they wouldn't help me since I don't have Apple Care. Whatever. Hope this helps!!

  • How can I get my ipad to reflect the same playlist order that appears on my computer?

How can I get my ipad to reflect the same playlist order that appears on my computer?  My computer has the exact desired order of playlist, but once the system is synced, the ipad does not reflect the propper order.

In iTunes with your playlist shown in the correct order, right-click on the playlist name in the side-bar and click Copy to Play Order. Enable the side-bar with CTRL+S if necessary. Sync. Note also that the column you are sorting on should have the small triangle pointing upwards, otherwise the songs will play in the reverse order. You may also find that you need to first remove, and then add back the playlist to the device if syncing doesn't update it properly. See this post for more.

  • How to manually sort playlists in iTunes?

Okay so I know you can manually sort songs within a playlist on iTunes but I wanted to know if you could manually sort the order of the playlists. It just defaults to alphabetic order which is annoying because I don't want them in that order...Is it possible to do this? Thanks!

    No you cannot.
To sort them, you need to rename them.

  • The playlist order on iTunes does not match the playlist order on my iPhone!!

Okay, I have been browsing discussion threads for the past two hours and nothing seems to be working!
I have essentially two playlists that I would like on my iPhone. One is the "purchased" folder that is automatcially created when you buy a song. I have it arranged by "date added". The second playlist I want is called "music library"... there I have simply copy and pasted all my songs into a playlist and sorted them by "play count". However, no matter what I do (ie. switching the order from starting from the "lowest play count" to the "highest play count", starting new smart playlists with the "playlist is music" criteria, and right clicking the playlist and clicking "copy to play order") NOTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING!! Please help me, I just want them in the order I have them on iTunes.
    Thank you!

I had the same problem but got my playlists synced perfectly a few nights ago. i did a few things at a time so i'm not sure which exactly did it. my playlists were coming up in reverse order on my iPhone. Most played appeared starting with the least of the most played. With the iPhone plugged into the computer, the iPhone appears in itunes. When i expanded it, i saw eclaimation marks near a few of the smart playlists. the error message was something along the lines of "could not sync playlist becuase it relies on another playlist that could not be found".
Now my smart playlists still had the fix from way back when you had to add a condition saying playlist is Music, and it seemed that the playlists "Music" not being on the device confused it somewhat. so i modified my smart playlists to not rely on any other smart playlists, unsynced and resynced those playlists from my phone and it all came up perfectly from then on, no problems for the last few days.
I think it's an ios bug as syncing another phone on older ios4 got the playlist order perfectly before all of these changes i made. Hope that helps someone, it was driving me nuts for weeks.

  • Keeping my itunes playlist order after I sync to iPod Nano 7th Gen

So I created a playlist but I am having trouble keeping the order of songs after I sync. I have tried rating them as well but as soon as I sync, Alphabetical order is what I get. Any thoughts?

In iTunes, go to your playlist.  On the playlist, click on its column header row at the far left end, above the column with sequential numbers below.  That sorts the playlist by playlist order, and you can change the song order by dragging songs around on the list.  You may have done this already.
If you sync this playlist to the iPod, it should appear in that order on the iPod.
If it does not, you may not be looking at the playlist on the iPod.  If you select the list of All Songs on the iPod, it will be in alphabetical order.  Even if you only have one playlist synced to the iPod, the All Songs list is not the playlist.  If you select the playlist on the iPod, it should be in playlist order.

  • How do i sort playlists? NOT THE CONTENT (songs)

Hi guys, Is there a way to sort/order the playlist order NOT the content of the playlist (songs inside the playlist) since its alphabetically sorted by default.
For example you have 3 playlists named...
    Strawberry
    Apple
    Grapes
It'll be automatically sorted in the order of Apple -> Grapes -> Strawberry no matter when the playlist was created.

    Add leading digits.
    1: Strawberry
    2: Apple
    3: Grapes
And use playlist folders to group related playlists.

  • Zen xtra - change playlist order by alpha

    hi there!
is there a way to change the playlist order by alphabet?
    e.g.
i have a lot of tracks and so does my girlfriend.
i want to create a playlist including all my tracks and a playlist including all tracks of my girlfriend. i know how to do this so far.
but with the creative media source organizer it is not possible to change the playlist order by alphabet.
    or am I wrong?
further i have recognized that it takes very long to play a playlist (just the playlist the tracks are already on the device) on the device.
let's say ,5-2 sec per track that is included in the playlist.
    is this normal?
    cheers
    chill

. i don't want to play tracks in alphabetical order. i just want to use this option to have a seperate playlist sorted. let's say i played some music with an other program, no i transfer all the played tracks via playlist in my zen, to find tracks faster i want to have the option to sort it in alphabetical order.
    2. tried it with notmad explorer, i can't find an option to sort the playlist, at least in trial version.
    3. please tell me how long it takes you approx. to transfer a track to your zen? ir takes me approx. -3 sec per track. (i.e. several hours, up to 6 to transfer approx 60gb. is this normal)
    4. is the transfer rate with notmad explorer in full version much higher?
    cheers

  • Questions about playlist order

    Hi,
This is my first post to this forum and I hope that someone will be able to help me. I have just started using ITunes version 10 and have done pretty well until I got ready to burn my first CD. I have several questions:
    1. I have put the songs in my playlists in a particular order but when I burn them they come out in a different order. I find from reading this forum that having the shuffle set to "on" can cause this problem. Well, I am not sure if it is on or off. When I click "Shuffle" the next window looks like this:
    Turn on shuffle
    X By Song
    By Albums
    By Groupings
If I click on "Turn on shuffle" the window turns to "Turn off shuffle". This confuses the new guy. Is my configuration set to shuffle or not? What do I need to do to get the songs to burn in the desired order?
    2. When looking at the playlist the first column has a marker pointing down in the far left position. Below the marker is listed the song numbers. If you left click the down marker it changes the song order. What is this feature for?
    3. I have searched high and low and I can't find instructions for the use of Itunes. Are they available via the internet? If so, where can I find them?
For your information I am using a newer HP machine running Windows 7.
I know most of these questions are pretty basic for most of you but since I am new, I have a learning curve I must overcome.
Your help and patience will be appreciated.

If the button with crossed arrows at the lower left of iTunes is blue, Shuffle is on.
Turn Shuffle off to burn a playlist.
The arrow in the column header is for sorting. It's triangle and if the point is at top, it sorts ascending order (first to last). If the point is down, it sorts in descending order (last to first).

  • Retaining Playlist Order

I just upgraded to an iPhone 5 a little while back and I've noticed that no matter how I sort my smart playlists track-by-track on iTunes, that order is never preserved under the Playlists tab on my iPhone, which changes it to alphabetical by artist name. Checking off "album is a compilation of songs by various artists" doesn't change how the playlist gets ordered. Is there any way to preserve every part of the playlist order? Because right now it makes things like soundtrack albums jumbled messes!

Well, I have done that - pretty intuitive actually and it is easy to manipulate in iTunes. That is a strength.
But now I can't seem to get a playlist onto the Nano. I select 'Music' on the iPod in iTunes, drag a playlist from iTunes (which was created and named on iTunes as discussed), but end up with only the songs - no playlist - on the Nano .
I have the latest SW on iTunes and iPod.

  • How do I randomize a playlist order in iTunes 11.0.1.12?

I recently updated my computer software (iTunes included, obviously) and have come to realize that this new version does not give me the abilities that the previous versions have.  I wiped my iPod clean to start from scratch, as it was full and I was hoping to put newer material on it, and when I went to load a playlist and shuffle it for playback order, I realized that the shuffle button, which is what I used before, is no longer available.  How do I shuffle a playlist order or track order or whatever, within a playlist, so I could copy it to the play order and sync it to my iPod?

I'm still not sure what this option (to shuffle a Playlist and then Sync that to the iPod) was or where it was in iTunes 10. This is despite your question having been raised by other people.
Surely, since you can shuffle a Playlist on an iPod, it's not necessary to shuffle it before Syncing, is it?

  • Replace default table sort with order by on the view object

The Jdeveloper help for af:table says:
If the underlying model is not a CollectionModel , the Table automatically examines the actual data to determine which properties are sortable. Any column that has data that implements java.lang.Comparable is sortable. This automatic support cannot be nearly as efficient as coding sorting directly into a CollectionModel (for instance, by translating the sort into an "ORDER BY" SQL clause), but is sufficient for small data sets.
I have a database table with varchar2 columns that can contain string, date or number values. So in the af:table I want to sort the columns either in string, date or number order.
I tried creating a sort listener and in that listener set the view object order by clause and execute the query, but it does not affect the row order - it is always sorted as a string. I assume that the collection is doing its sort after I do the query, and overwriting the query order. I have tried disabling the sort in the listener by setting the sortcriteria to null but it has no effect.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the default sort re-ordering the rows, or else how to code sorting directly into the CollectionModel as suggested in the help.
    Hugh Nelson

By running in debug I discovered that when you click on a column heading to sort by the column values it actually sets the order by clause on the view object and executes a query. The help says that the default sorting is not as efficient as setting the order by clause - perhaps the help is out of date because default sorting does set the order by clause.
This means that you cannot do a column sort on a transient attribute. The attribute being sorted on must exist in the table/query.
The easiest solution is to override the setOrderByClause method on the view object. The string parameter is the column to order by eg "COLUMNA". If this column holds date values I can change it to something like "TO_CHAR(TO_DATE(COLUMNA,'DD-MON-YYYY'),'YYYYMMDD')". For numbers I do "LPAD(COLUMNA,10,'0')".
    This works OK.

  • How do I sort the order of bookmark folders themselves?

I see plenty of instructions on how to sort marks ''within'' a folder, but I'm unable to find how to sort the order of the bookmark folders themselves. Ideally, I'd like to alphabetize them, but on occasion I might prefer sorting by the date the folder was created.
    Thanks for your suggestions
    Jonathan1000

Don't use the Views menu to sort as that is only for viewing bookmarks in the bookmarks manager (hence the name of the menu item).<br />
To sort items you need to use Sort By Name in the right-click context menu in the right pane.

  • Playlist order on Nano

I notice that I can set a playlist order in Itunes in various ways (using the arrows at the top of the columns). Howeverm the order in Itunes does not transfer to the Nano. Anyone know how to do this?
p.s. I think the order is governed my the Music folder directly. But does this mean you must select a "global" order for all plylists?

Well, I have done that - pretty intuitive actually and it is easy to manipulate in iTunes. That is a strength.

  • Audio book chapters won't sort in order

I'm downloading a book and either in audio book format or as music, I cannot get the chapters to sort in order on my iPod. They sort in order in iTunes, but when I download them to the iPod, they come in reverse order. That really doesn't do it for me when I'm driving and listening!
