Sorting - some artists go missing on my iPod

I have several artists who go under a variety of different names. Bobby Bland is one - sometimes he's known as Bobby 'Blue' Bland, or Bobby "Blue" Bland, or just plain Bobby Bland. All the same guy, and in the 'Sorting' column I've told iTunes to sort them all as 'Bland Bobby'. This works fine in iTunes, but not with my iPod, which cannot see Bobby "Blue" Bland at all. The music IS there, if I can be bothered to look for the album title, but does NOT appear in the albums listed under Bobby Bland. Exactly the same thing happened with Gil Scott-Heron, who sometimes worked with Brian Jackson. If I put Gil -Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson in the sorting info iPod lost this artist. The only way round this seemed to be to rename all the GSH + BJ albums as Gil Scott-Heron and leave out Brian Jackson altogether. Much the same applies to BB King, who is sometimes B.B. King, or B. B. King....
This issue needs to be addressed, Apple!

I'm not sure how the classical musical is tagged, but one of these things might work:
-- Select all of the Tchaikovsky tracks, do Get Info and enter the word Tchaikovsky in the Comment window. Then sort your list by the Comment window.
-- Create a Smart Playlist with the rule that Comment is (or includes) Tchaikovsky. Now you've isolated all Tchaikovsky tracks together.
--Another option would be to change the tags themselves, perhaps by pasting the word Tchaikovsky just in front of the Artist name (which, in this case, I would assume is the orchestra performing the work).
It's a bit of work, but until iTunes gets some feature updates, these are some workarounds that classical music lovers might use to achieve their desired results. If you haven't already, submit your thoughts to Apple Feedback about iTunes and let them know how the application is lacking in features for classical music. I'm sure they couldn't anticipate every user scenario when creating the program, and the more users who let them know, the more likely something will change.
Hope one my suggestions helps you out in the meantime.

  • Sorting by ARTIST not the same in iPod and iTunes?

In iTunes/Windows, I insert a CD consisting of a compilation by various people as ARTIST='Various artists' and ALBUM ARTIST='whatever-singer'. Sorting by ARTIST shows the CD under the group 'Various artists', with each song corresponding to 'whatever-singer'. The iTunes library creates a folder for 'Various artists' with the CD name and all the songs inside.
Transfering to the iPod and selecting ARTIST, lists instead all the 'whatever-singer' as separate items, rather than the 'Various artists' name used in iTunes.
Any suggestion to make the iPod terminology compatible with iTunes?. Thanks

Mark it as a compilation then. It will show up as one album, at the end of coverflow but NOT under artists, unless you have a "regular" non compilation album by the artist. Unfortunately all of your, for example, Bryan Adams music would not be together - Albums in alphabetical order, compilations at the end. Another way to work around this would be to add the guests name to the individual song titles, such as "We're In Heaven (Feat. whoever)". This involves renaming the tracks, and deleting the "Featuring" name from the artist, but the album will only show up once. This is the most annoying thing about coverflow - an album is not a compilation because it has 2 guests on it - but the ipod thinks it is. My opinion is that if I would sort it with an artists other albums in my CD collection, I should be able to do so in my ipod...without creating 4 covers because of guests on an album. I really hope this is addressed in the future!

  • ITunes Won't Sort Some Artists By Last Name

I have recently decided to sort my artists by last name on my Macbook, using "Sort Artist" and "Sort Album Artist" in the sorting columns of iTunes.  This has worked fine for all artists, except two of them.  For instance, my Brian Wilson collection will not move and remains sorted by B instead of W.  The only way I can move it to W is if I change the "Album Artist" to a different name in the info section.  So, if I changed it to, say, "Brian Wilson 2" or some variation, it moves.  But when I change it back to Brian Wilson, it keeps reverting to sorting by first name. Of course, this is unpractical.  I deleted and reimported my entire Wilson collection, and it still didn't make a difference.
Strangely, on my iMac, I do not have this problem and everything sorts perfectly.  I am an iTunes Match subscriber and thought perhaps that was messing with things, but the problem still persists with it off.  So if there's any suggestions to what's going on, that'd be great.
    Thanks!

I have this problem too, and I get around it by adding a middle name -  so Franz Schubert became Franz Peter Schubert
It's not ideal, but there is not fix that I can find.

  • Some artists names missing after power fluctuation

hi, i was wondering if you guys encountered the same problem on the subject. i was updating manually some songs on my ipod when the power fluctuated thus shutting down the PC and disconnecting my iPod abruptly. when i reconnected, all artists are shown on itunes as if nothing happened. when finished updating and disconnected my iPod, i happen to notice that some artists are no longer on the list when i browse them. however when i look for their songs in tne song list, its there as well as their albums. from then on when i update new artists into my iPod it no longer adds up to the artists list. do you have any idea how i can i correct this error without restoring my iPod? i have reset few times but its no use. thanks to your inputs.

well the main reason why i don't consider restoring is that i believe it erases all what is on the iPod. the hardwork of importing songs, editing, placing an artwork, etc... will take weeks to finish. i don't have any other drive to back-up. i'd like my library polished squeaky clean without incorrect information such as misspelled words. anyway i can bear with this little error that it has rather than to start rebuilding a library. i hope i don't encounter other errors though. thanks for your reply.

  • What happened to my cover art? It's all still in my iTunes library, but some of it missing on my iPod Touch, and appears instead as a white square with a gray music note or a black square. Please help me out.

Plus, some of the cover art is mixed up and some of the covers have even been replaced with combinations of multiple albums. And every once in a while, a song will play on its own, without me pressing play, and it skips as if I'm holding the forward button. This iPod is only a few months old so I'm really worried! This just started today after I had it plugged into my computer and synced it. It might have been caused by a tree that fell and knocked out the power in our area while the iPod was plugged in. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? Would taking it into an Apple store help?

    Hello Philly,
I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?)  touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

  • Could anyone tell me why some artists are missing from my Artists list?

    Dell Dimension 3000   Windows XP

I've had that problem before. Check your compilations. If any of the songs are part of a compilation, they might not show up. Then again, my iPod went all crazy one night and listed even the ones that were in compilations as the single artist, but then went back to not displaying all of them the next day. I'd say check to see if any of the songs are part of compilations and if you're really wanting to just display that artist, Get Info on those songs and select NO for making them part of a compilation. Hope it works out for you.

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • How do I get my artists to sort by last name on my new ipod touch?

How do I get my artists to sort on my ipod touch 5th gen? I have tried all the sort fields in my iTunes, and that appears to have worked there, but even after I sync the ipod touch to it, the artists still appear on the ipod by first name. I am new to the ipod touch, my classic just died recently, very unhappy that I couldn't replace it.

  • Sort By Artist leaves spaces between some albums and some without. Help !

    Hello All,
So I'm looking for some help here. I have my iTunes in basically perfect order but the one thing I can't figure out is that when sorting by artist (or even by album for that matter). Some albums have a one line space between them and others do not.
I've attached a screen shot to explain.
    http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj87/TSchiewe/Picture1-3.png
If you look, there's a line space between "Arcade Fire" and "Archie Bell & the Drells"(which is what I want for everything). But no line space between "Archie Bell & the Drells" and "Architecture In Helsinki" and for that matter between the the next "Architecture In Helsinki" album.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can seem to find anything but I think its mainly do to the ambiguous terms.
    Travis.

You'll probably find that if you shrink the artwork column a bit the blank line disappears. For albums with few tracks there will always be some blank lines to allow the art to be displayed, but at some point the display changes to contiguous listing. As far as I'm aware this is a cosmetic change introduced with iTunes 8. In iTunes 7.x there was always at least one blank line separating albums in the equivalent layout.

  • Artist photo missing from some artists

I recently realized that the music artists on my iPhone(5s) have pictures of themselves. But not all of them. Sometimes, at first they don't have a picture (it just shows the album artwork) but it appears after some time. What should I do if I want all the artists to have pictures of themselves not albums artwork?
P.S I have some indie-underground artists that have pictures, and, for example, some artists that have a wikipedia page and still their pictures are missing

I had an earlier post on this subject with a similar problem. I tried what you suggested and it worked indeed. You can select the artists from your Ipod on Itunes and after highlighting the artists/albums affected, click NO on the compilation box and the issue is resolved: the artists appear on the list.
    Thank you so much!!!!.

  • Why I can't see some songs in my 30G video Ipod if I search via artist?

Hi. This is an Ipod question. I load my iTunes library in 2 Ipods, the new 30G video and in the old 20G photo. Why is it that in the 20G Ipod when I search for the songs via artist, all of them appear, but when I search via artist in the 30G Ipod in some cases it only appears one song, and all the others dont, although they are there, cause when I search via song I find them. This is very annoying, cause I hate to search via song. The songs are perfectly edited, the probe is that with the 20G photo Ipod I dont have this problem. I think is a problem with the Ipod cause I been having this problem with 3 different 30 G Ipod video (Mine & my friends). Does anyone has had the same problem?
    Getway   Windows XP

    Hi Chris.
Ok every son gneeds artist and album, but why in my 20 G photo Ipod I can see the songs searching via artist without any problem. And why in the new 30G video Ipod it only happens with some artists, cause for example I have 40 u2 songs, some with album name and some not, and all of them appear searching via artist. But with another artist, for example def leppard, I have 15 songs (some with album name, and some not) and searching via artist I can see only the ones in some particular album, and others that also have album name dont appear unless I look for them via song

  • Why are some Artists missing?

When I go to the Artist List on my IPod, some artists do not appear on the list. They also do not appear when I use the search function. However, when I look under the song title, the correct artist is listed. Any ideas? I'm at a loss and have no clue what to do. Thanks for any help you can give.

Highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a song info window, and by selecting "options" you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".

Master reset...? Your device was jailbroken prior to you purchasing the device. The only symbol you should see on reboot is an Apple symbol. Download redsnow... google it! Download the latest version and your IPSW (ipod restore firmware) it has to be the correct version. And the "just boot tethered" should fix your device.
But that's only if you didnt back the device up. If you don't care about any of the data on the ipod then you can simply open itunes navigate to the device and click the restore button. This will restore the ipod firmware and install a fresh copy. Good luck let me know if you have any problems.
