Sorting within itunes library

I have saved a "learn a language" cd onto itunes. It has many units each comprising many exercises. Itunes unfortunately sorts it by exercise first and unit second. Is there any way I can overide this sorting so listening to the lessons are sequential as in the accompanying book.

TV Shows with the same name used to be grouped in a common folder if there was more than 1 season.
So say for Star Trek, if you had Seasons 1-3, they would all have been grouped in the same Start Trek folder with a Season number heading followed by season episodes.
Now you have a subfolder for each season, so instead of just a single Star Trek entry you'd have:
Star Trek (season 1)
Star Trek (season 2)
Star Trek (season 3)
If you consider some show may have had tens of seasons of shows this then really clutters your TV Show menu.
Actually, I have close to a TB of just TV shows, including series with many seasons (e.g. five seasons of MI-5) and the organization doesn't seem cluttered to me. Most series don't have that many seasons and most people don't have that many series in their collections. But I get your point.
I do wish my iTunes collection was placed more prominently in the main screen, but I understand why Apple did it that way.

They want to make money from rentals not make it easy to watch your own content.
Rental goal acknowledged, I disagree with the latter part. Apple TV 2 makes it easier to watch your local content if you have more than one computer in your Home Share collection (or whatever they call it).
With the Apple TV classic, you could only sync with one computer. If the family uses a shared account for music and video, everyone had to copy their stuff onto the same machine. With the new version (ATV2), my wife and daughter can have their own collections and access them from the Apple TV 2 as they wish. I really don't need a copy of Scooby Doo on my Mac Mini, but my daughter probably watches a movies 10 times before moving on to a new title.

Back up your iTunes before doing any sorting.  If you remove something you didn't intend to then a backup is the best way to get it back.

  • May I change audio file format once CD are ripped within iTunes library?

I configured iTunes to store audio under  .vaw format but after ripping 1/5 of my CDs I realize that, after synchro,  50% of my iPod memory becomes full.

By .vaw do you mean .wav?
Yes, you can select the .wav files and use the "convert selection to" (may have changed with newer versions of itunes) to a compressed format such as AAC or MP3.  This will leave the original unchanged and add a new file in the different format to your library.  You can then delete the .wav files, or leave them,

  • How can I sort my iTunes library by filename?

Before I started using iTunes, I invested lots of time renaming my music files so that they'd sort into just the order I wanted so I could find things easily.
I'm not finding a way to get the filename into the heading of my library so I can sort on it. Is there a way to do this?
If not, is there a way to copy the filename into some field that does appear in the heading (like name, for example).
    All help appreciated.

Um, not quite sure what you mean by "regular song list view" but you could just search the artist you want in the search box, and then click the names heading to sort it. But I feel like that's not what you want?
Unfortunately, iTunes (like turingtest2 said) doesn't support multi-level sorting. It kinda does its own thing after you manually select one type of sorting.

  • How do i move an album within iTunes library?

  • Where'd my other iTunes library go?

My 10-year-old got an iTouch for Christmas and I needed to set it up on my computer, which was already home to my own iTouch. I read the Apple support topic on how to use multiple iPods on a single computer and thought the best idea would probably be to make a separate library for his stuff. So I did that. Tonight, I tried to hook up my own iPod to the computer for the first time since then and... I can't find where my original library is. Yes, I'm holding "shift" when I open iTunes and choosing the library. The problem is, there seems to be just one library to choose now -- the one with about 30 songs. The one with the 3,000+ other songs seems to have vanished. Or else I can't figure where it is.
Help? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Sigh. This is so completely and fully screwed up and given how screwy it is, I have zero confidence that I will be able to do whatever machinations are going to be required to my computer and both iPods. But if anyone has any suggestions based on the information I'm about to give, I'd appreciate it.
There's indeed a folder called "iTunes library." When I open it, the title at the top says "previous iTunes libraries." There is no current or most recent version of my iTunes libraries.
But wait. That's not all. There's also a folder -- NOT a subfolder -- called "Sons iPod." It, too, contains "iTunes library" -- which now consists of the self-same "previous iTunes libraries" from the other folder. His library is gone, gone, gone -- not a tragedy since it consisted of about 30 songs from my library.
But things appear to me to be super-mega screwed up and I have no earthly idea how to:
    a) re-establish a current iTunes library for my iPod that won't wipe out more of my stuff. Is my library now dubbed "previous" because it was taken from a previous list? Or is that some other problem?
    b) establish some sort of iTunes library somewhere for my son's iPod that won't wipe out his stuff or my stuff or send me into orbit every time I try to sync one or the other iPods? Can I somehow ditch the #3 choice and establish him some other way on my computer? Even though that makes me quake with fear?
Hopefully, this can be solved in a satisfactory and not too time- or headache-intensive way but I am not hopeful. I am wondering if I will deeply regret buying my son an iPod. I can tell you I hate hate hate iTunes right now. Hate it. And I'm not exactly thrilled with Apple saying I could get technical support only if I pay them more f'ing money just so I can try to make their product work right. But I love Katrina.

  • How do I back up my itunes library within itunes? I just purchased a new HP laptop and my library did not fully load from my back up files on an external hard drive (HP Simple Save).  I was told yesterday by a tech to back up library within itunes

How do I backup my itunes account on my old laptop within itunes so I can access on my new laptop.  Both are HP's

While the above sorts you out for a one time transfer this is what I would recommend...
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

  • How do I sort music in the iTunes library by Genre followed by Year instead of Artist Name?

I am currently using the iTunes Library to organize my music. I find that the library by default arranges music into folders by Artist Name. Is there any way to first make it arrange the music by Genre and then by Year instead of Artist Name within the folders? Since I have music in different languages and use this music in other music software as well, sorting by Genre will be extremely helpful. I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks in Advance!

Sorry, I missed part 2. Unless CS4.2 has added a true "Group" function, like in InDesign, Illustrator, etc., there is not a direct way to keep Selected Clips together. However, you can put them on their own Sequence and then Nest that Sequence with others. This is often done, so that one can apply Effects "globally" to that Nested Sequence. [Note: there is no real Group function in Titler either, but for many operations, one can Select multiple Text Blocks, Shapes, Lines, etc., but there is no way to permanently "hold" that group.]
The Alt-click in the Project Panel, for instance, will allow one to drag all to the Timeline, and the Shift-click (or lasso w/ Cursor) in the Timeline will allow one to apply certain things to that group, but the moment that any other Clip is Selected, that "group," does not exist.
I can see a use for a real Group function, but for things like the application of Effects, one would still need to do the Nesting. Test this out by Selecting just two Clips, and go to apply an Effect - you cannot do that. OTOH, one can apply an Effect to one Clip, Rt-click it and choose Copy, then Select multiple Clips and Rt-click on those, where you would Paste Attributes. Not exactly what I think you are asking about, but the results, with just a few clicks, should be the same.
If I missed your intent and need, let me know where I went wrong.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Never mind, got it to work. I stumbled around on Google for a while and somehow ended up reading things from the 'jailbroken' community. They had easy instructions to get out of Recovery mode. Thanks anyway though!
P.S. For anyone who experiences this, here is the fix: Hold Power and Home in unison for 6 seconds, then power on as normal.

No, the sort options info does not carry over to the iPod.
The iPod sorts by album/artist only.

  • I have transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to new windows 8 pc. Music was in alphabetical order by surname but new pc has some by surname some by first name and some not in alphabetical order. How can I get sorted?

Question  Hi - I've transferred my iTunes library from windows 7 pc to one with windows 8. My library was in alphabetical order by surname but after transfer is now some by surname, some by first name, and some not in alphabetical order. How do I sort this out and also make sure that new downloads list by surname alphabetically?

Sorting in iTunes is often controlled by selecting different column headings. The sort order for any given column may be further modified by a sort value, e.g. Sort Artist affects the sort order of Artist. If you transferred the library properly all of the metadata should have remained intract and you simply need to select the a column that sorts as you want. If you had to import the library then there is the potential for tagging effects that could mean metadata entered previously didn't import with the media. Note that iTunes has no mechanism for automatically deciding which values are in <Forename> <Surname> order and could therefore be sorted as <Surname> <Forename>. The only automatic process drops leading articles (a/an/the) so that "The Doors" sort under D as "Doors".

  • Within Music Library can anyone please explain why when I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I correct this?  I have tried to 'drag and drop' but that doesn't work.

Within music Library can anyone please explain why after I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I fix this?  I have tried to manually correct by 'drag and drop' individual tracks but that doesn't work.  My music library includes a number of repeat album artwork images simply because not all tracks are being listed under the one album making my library more difficult to use than it should.  Any advise would be appreciated.

  • Smart playlists do not display in same sort order as host iTunes library

    Hello,
I subscribe to about 100 podcasts, in 3 different categories (lets say News, Tech, Photography) and a few of them across all areas are video.
I am looking for a way to better manage these
I create a couple of smart playlists and
    Smart Playlist one:  News
Inclusion by Album Name or Artist name, etc
         Sorted by Most Recently Added
    Smart Playlist two:  News unplayed
Inclusion:  Above Smart Playlist + views = 0
         Sort by Most Recently Added
    ..etc..
[I have to have 3 sets of these, plus another one that goes across all 3 and has a Video not Audio type selection]
Now when I use my Apple TV to connect to my iTunes library and display the Smart Playlist above, it displays in a different order than I see on my iTunes library in the host computer.
    Questions are:
    1. Any better way to manage my podcast subscriptions?
    2. Any better way to then view on the Apple TV?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,
    Vik

  • Sorting iTunes Library.

    Hello all,
I get the sorting by columns thing and I also get the "Get Info"/"Sorting" tab thing.
What I want is to be able to sort by Artist first, then by Album Year. What my iTunes library is currently doing is sorting by Artist then Album Name. I'm not seeing where I can sort by year (secondarily).
Maybe this is too simply I'm overlooking it .... I just downloaded iTunes 7.3.2, FYI.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Joe.

Click the header of the "Album" column until it says "Album by Year". The hierarchy will then be Artist (or Album Artist if there is one) > Year > Album > Disc # > Track #.
