Ok, i dropped my powerbook today.
and the airport doesn't working.
when i opened "NETWORK".
it said "The airport hardware is not found."
then i called my friend.
He told me to remove the battery.
and there's a lil thing inside...and that's a airport card.
so he told me to tried to pull it out and re-insert.
maybe it will work.
I did what he told me......
But......
he told me to pull the string......
i pull, and pull, and pull....
and it's broke......
it break into 2 pieces.....
OMGGGGGG...
Help, can anyone answer me...
is it hard/ expensive to fix that lil string connect to the airport card?
right now, everything is still okie with my computer...
besides i can't go online wirelessly....
and there's no cable in my room..
so i have no way to go on9 in my own room.
I wonder, Is there any extended airport that i can get to go on9 wirelessly?
btw, my computer is like 5 or 6 year-old. it's out of warranty.

maggieelam, Welcome to the discussion area!
It sounds like you broke the antenna wire. You will need to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to get it repaired.
btw, my computer is like 5 or 6 year-old. it's out of warranty.
The damage you caused wouldn't be covered under warranty anyway.

  • Latest 7.6.1 firmware broke all Airport Express connections with Airport Extreme

Installed the latest Airport Utility (6.0) last night.  Once installed I ran Airport Utility and saw my 4 Airport Express N's, one Time Capsule, and Airport Extreme needed a firmware update to version 7.6.1.  Installed to all of them, and initially everything came back up-and-running.  All this equipment remains on 24-hours a day, and the four Airport Express are wirelessly joined to the Airport Extreme's wireless network.
This morning the wireless link between the Airport Extreme and all four Airport Express's was broken (flashing amber light on all of them).  Power resets did nothing.  The Time Capsule link was still good; however, the Time Capsule is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet.  Visited this forum and saw other folks were having similar problems.
I saw no way of downgrading the Airport Extreme firmware with Airport Utility 6.0, so I downloaded Airport Utility 5.6.  I launched it, and was able to downgrade the Airport Extreme firmware back to version 7.6.  After hard resetting the four Airport Express units, I was able to downgrade their firmware also back to 7.6.  Everything immediately came back online.
Am going to sit this firmware update out until more shelf life exists with it.  I also agree the Airport Utility 6.0 seem to be a less capable step backward.  Why someone thought we need a simpler interface for a "Utility" that resides in the "Utility Folder" is mystifying.

First I've updated my Extreme to 7.6.1, then, the Express.
Everything work fine untill I update the Airport Utility to the new version and rebooted my extreme, then my Express stop working (An can't be detected anymore by the Airport Utility, orange light)
So I took my laptop, plug a network cable between it and my Express (Now I was seeing it in the Airport Utility) and reconfire the wireless network connection between them.
    Hope this Help!
    Fred

  • Airport Extreme Update broke my wireless

The Airport Extreme Update 2007-001 issued a few days ago caused my wireless connection to drop after a few minutes. Nothing can bring it back except a reboot... every few minutes.
Before installing it, I had no problems whatsoever. It makes no difference which wireless network I'm connected to.
There is another thread on the next page, but that seems to be concerned with OSX 10.4.8 being the problem. I had no problems with 10.4.8 before installing the update, so I consider this to be a different problem.
Anyone else got the same problem? Any solutions gratefull received!

I deleted the three files mentioned further down in the article.
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
This is now the longest I've been able to keep an internet connection for several days, and still going strong. In fact, it seems to be faster than it was before... but I'm not holding my breath.
I'll post back in a day or so with a proper report, in case it helps anyone else.
    Thanks again.

  • New AIrport Extreme - seems to work, but....

    Hey all:
Just received an Airport Extreme to replace old D-Link wireless router. Connected everything, and all seems to work as it should. But.... The AE unit's amber light on the front is continuously flashing. The Setup Guide says this indicates one of a number of malfunctions, but I'm able to connect to the internet fine via two wireless computers. I'm also able to print via the USB-to-AE connected printer.
What does this mean? Should I be looking for what's up? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Carlos Alden

If it is functioning, then that means you may not have secured your network, or some feature in the process was ignored that is unnecessary for your service to work. If it ain't broke don't fix it. But securing your network with WPA2 or better encryption if possible is a good idea since it will avoid others from using your bandwidth on your connection, in addition avoiding the possibility that a non-secure website might gather personal information easier when it is unsecured.

  • Setting up a USB external Drive with USB Hub on Airport Extreme

I have successfully hooked up the Airport Extreme Base Station (n) with two printers using a USB Hub. I am now trying to hook up an external hard drive(acomdata 250 gb). When I plug the hard drive into the Hub and turn the drive on the Airport Extreme Base station resets to amber and flashes green for a second then resets to amber again and it keeps doing that until I shut the drive down. I have a Mac Book Pro and an iMac on the network as well as a HP pavilion a730n on the network. I am able to share files between the PC and the Macs; however I can't seem to share the external hard drive. I tested the external hard drive by hooking it up directly to the Mac book and after a few seconds it mounted correctly and I was able to read and write.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

What version of the AE firmware are you running? If you upgraded to 7.1, LOTS of people have discovered that Apple broke the USB connectivity for both disks and printers big time. With the 7.1 firmware version a few people can see the disks, but most people CANNOT see the printers.

  • Airport Utility not recognizing Time Capsule after Airport Extreme Update08

After installing the Airport Extreme Update 2008 my Time Capsule keeps crashing. I have powered down both my DSL modem and the Time Capsule, done a hard reset of the Time Capsule and yet it continues to flash amber lights. Yesterday, after hours of resetting everything and finally getting a green light and an internet connection, today my network and all of the airport setting have completely disappeared. Is anyone else having this problem and if so, have you found a solution? Is there a way to uninstall this updates as I believe it has caused these issues?

  • Slow iPhone 3Gs with Airport Extreme WiFi

This seems to be a pretty well established issue as there are in-depth videos on YouTube demonstrating this phenomenon. In a nutshell, my network connection speed stinks on my new iPhone 3Gs when I'm connected to the internet via my Airport Extreme. It's most notable when trying to watch any videos using the phones YouTube app. Too slow downloading to make it worth using. Any known fixes out there? This IS NOT a jail-broke phone BTW, I am 100% legal with AT&T service. Running the latest version of SL and have the latest iPhone OS installed. Any help is appreciated!

Try asking this question somewhere other than the "Mail and Address Book" forum.

  • Using Airport Extreme with a Netopia Wireless Router 2247NWG

Hi, I'm trying to set up an airport extreme base station (AEBS) with a netopia wireless router and my XP SP3 Laptop. I have the extreme plugged into the router and the set up of the AEBS went fine. I have a solid green light on the AEBS and it appears to be working OK. When I move to another room in the house, I have two wireless networks available - the netopia wireless router and the AEBS. Whichever of the networks I connect to, the signal strength is extremely poor and the other is showing available with 5 bars. When I connect to the strong network, the signal goes weak and the original network is available with 5 bars. I've tried disabling the wireless on the router but this doesn't help. The router network is still showing as available with 5 bars but I can't connect to it.
First day with my MAC gear (haven't even opened the MacBook box yet) and I need help!!!!!!!!!!!

So, today I finally broke down and plugged them both into the two available ports in the back of the AEBSn via ethernet cables. My question is: Do I have to "turn off" the airport connection in order to make the ethernet connection the default connection?
That might help but it isn't necessary. You can simply rearrange the order of items in the Network preference pane.
Search on the internet and you will find many ways to check the speed. One is http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp

  • Cant connect to Airport extreme with Macbook.

Hi all. I am a switcher. I bought my iMac G5 in Feb. I loved it so much I got a Macbook notebook recently cuss of the free iPod deal. Plus I missed being able to be moblie with my computer. I had a linksys router from my old wireless pc but found it very difficult to hook up with my Macbook. I called Linksys for support but because my router is 3 yrs old, they wanted me to pay 9.95 for help. I would have but I cant understand those people. I love apple products and after seeing so many rave reviews on the airport extreme I purchased it. The lure of the 5 min set up brought me in. Well here I am hours later and nothing. I did manage to get rid of the blinking amber light. I dont know how, just kept messing with the settings and whoa, it worked, nice green light. I am not good at setting up networks so I hope someone can give me some advice.
I tried to set up the printer and nothing. I gave up and moved on to the Macbook. It says it cant find the base station. I tried to manually add the network I created, again no luck. So am I missing something simple here?
    iMac G5, macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

broke down and called support. Turns out a setting was set to manual on macbook. Dont know why but glad its resolved. If all else fails call tech support, huh?

  • Airport Extreme (Dualband) Issues after latest update

So after the semi-recent 7.4.1 upgrades, I am having a persistent issue where my computer will drops its connection to my Airport Extreme Dualband for no reason. Most commonly, it happens after I have left the computer sitting overnight. After I come back, the computer will be connected to no networks, despite my network showing up as available. The computer is not on the move, and there are no signal issues. I am not totally positive which machine is responsible (i.e. if the computer is dropping the connection, or if the router is), but I was hoping to here whether anyone else is experiencing the problem.

Spent 8 hours last night with same issues. All issues really started after the update. I had just bought the new dual band, set up was smooth, then all **** broke loose after the X.1 update. A couple of things I noticed. 1) Same issues you had that if the computers sat, it took a good 5 minutes to get the network up again or "see" it 2) I use comcast and I have noticed that the dynamic is causing issues between the AE and modem (post update) 3) Every time I try to change settings on the AE to add Guest network, the whole network crashes and I have to go to complete hard boot, reset AE and do power start all the way out. 4) Comcast rep had me power cycle all of my hard wire gigabit routers off the AE. I was having issues until I did this. Apparently the AE keeps IP if you feed routers off of it. Going to revert to 7.4 right now.

  • Gen 5 airport extreme

Bought this in Nov 2012. great until yesterday. I have two windows pcs (one win 7 and one win 8) i-pad, 2006 macbook, and laptop using Ubuntu. All on wireless.  Both windows pcs speedtested at .08Mbs while the macbook and Ubuntu speedtested at 24Mbs. I hardwired the two windows pcs and they tested out at 24Mbs. I reset the Extreme/updated the firm(didn't need it) / blew away my wireless network and re-built it. no change. I put my old Netgear router in and everything is perfict all devices testing out at 24ish Mbs.
    What broke?

So.. I hear you. one of the win boxes is a brend new all-in-one dell and i have had other issues with it. they sent two dell techs to my house and then shipped it off to the repair depot. long story short dell is replacing the pc. my network was fine on friday cuz i did a factory install on the dell. the myriad of win updates upon start-up went fast and smooth. so the network was working fine. my daughter just told me that her i-phone and surface was extreamly slow on saturday also. I agree that that the dell is probobly poop, but could it have infrcted the airport extreme? so some devices work and others are wicked slow?

  • NEED HELP! Connecting Airport Extreme wirelessly to an Xbox 360!

    Hi there,
I just purchased an Apple Airport Extreme 3 days ago and I can't get it to fully work with my XBox 360 with the official wirelessly networking adapter. I've spent the last 2 days trying every conceivable option and setup to get these devices to work.... but can't. When I turn on my Xbox it DOES connect to Xbox Live and the wireless network created by the airport. I do the "Test Xbox Live" thing, and everything comes back "Confirmed" or "Okay", I can search marketplace and download game demos and such. But whenever I go to play a game on Xbox Live it say it "can't connect to server" or "no games found" etc.... I've tried this with 4 games; Halo 3, Halo 2, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 3 - and I can't play on Xbox Live with any of them. They did work fine like 10 days ago on an old D-link router I had before it broke, but now I have NO IDEA what the ** is going on. I've tried everything - I've set the router to b/g only, turned off all security, manually set the IP address on the xbox, etc... and I still can't play any games on live. I know my Xbox live subscription is still good and I've downloaded all the latest updates and firmware for my Xbox, router, and computer - and still nothing works. So any help out there would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    John

Hello John Groshko. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, the AirPorts are not listed as Xbox Live-compatible routers.
The following web blog does a great job explaining the NAT issues with Xbox Live. Basically what it comes down to is that although you can get an Internet connection for the Xbox or Xbox 360 with the AirPorts, you may not get the necessary NAT setting (Moderate or Open) for the Xbox Live game that you want to play.

  • Airport Extreme is Extremely Slow!

I have tried 4 machines wiht both OS X and Windows and get the same results. I can stand right next to my Extreme and check my wireless G signal for the full 54m signal strength and a modem speed test pulls down at 1.2 to 2.0 Kbps. I can plug directly into the back of the Airport Express and I immediately get the full 6M down I'm paying for. I have the Airport Extreme downstairs, and Airport Express upstairs. Both have had the firmware updated. I use a 802.11b Airport card in my G4 PowerPC I have 2 laptops and my desktop which uses a d-link with extended antenna. I get the same results from any. Does anyone know why the wireless speed is so poor? I've upgraded the firmware on both devices to the latest and greatest. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Alright guys! I found a breakthrough and my wireless speeds are OPTIMUM SUPER SPEED now!
Found this article and it gave me some suggestions I hadn't tried.
    http://laughingmeme.org/archives/000834.html
Not sure if it'll work for you. I'm using a Linksys Wifi router so I'm not sure if these solutions will work for Airport Base Station owners. But here's what I did:
    1) The url link has a discussion where some people found success by dropping their TX Rates from "1-2-5.5-11Mbps" to "1-2 Mbps". Thus, I tried it and noticed a slight improvement from "250 Kbps" to "300 Kbps". But it's still far short of the "1,000 Kbps" my roommate is getting on his Dell and the "2,500 Kbps" I get when I connect directly using an Ethernet cable.
    2) So thus I tried another suggestion which was to change the Preamble Type from Long to Short. When I did that, my Powerbook AE started getting errors joining the network. So scratch that suggestion.
    3) Third, I tried going from Channel 9 to 11. I'm not sure what the logic is behind this but what did I have to lose? I already stayed up all night searching the internet for a solution! And VOILA!!! I tested the speed on "speakeasy.net/speedtest" and to my surprise, I started hitting speeds of "1,500 Kbps"!!! I retested and consistently, I'm hitting those speeds (both download and upload)! I decided to back track and put my TX rates back to the default setting of "1-2-5.5-11 Mbps" just to see what would happen. And to my DELIGHT, I am now flying at "2,500 Kbps" download and "1,800 Kbps" upload! I can now take a powernap before going to work.
    It's 7:52am. What a long night!
Perhaps this solution won't work if you have anything higher than Mac OS X 10.4.2 (that's what I have). But it's worth a shot!
For now, I'm not planning to upgrade from 10.4.2. If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it!
    Sleepin' in Peace,
    Christian Lee

  • Airport Extreme 802.11 B/G wireless periodically slows then stops ...

    Anyone seen this?
I've had this Airport Extreme 802.11 B/G Base Station for awhile now. I have a Dr. Bott external Directional Antenna attached lighting up my 2 story home. Has worked great for literally years. A couple of  years ago, a couple things happened. Hulu and Netflix came alive and my family started watching them religiously. We also purchased 2 Internet Enabled Televisions with HuluPlus and Netflix. We also now have Tablets that can also stream content.
Fairly soon after purchasing our first IE Television, I noticed that periodically the AX will simply lock up on the wireless side. The hard-line side still works, but traffic is stopped on the wireless "port." I can communicate to the AX via hard ethernet connections and see the configuration - it appears funcitonal. Resetting the AX makes the problem go away and will usually not return for several days. Today, this happens about once or twice a week.
Today, I was downloading a S/W update on my Corp. Lenovo W520,when this happened. I like to monitor the internet B/W on my Lenovo laptop using Windows Task Manager. I only have a 1.5M DSL outgoing line, so the WTM shows 2.5% of a 54Mbps connection when I'm pulling full BW on the DSL line. All of a sudden, I noticed the wireless connection broke (Eclamation Mark over the Win7 Wireless Tray icon.) I brought up the Task Manager Netoworking display and what I saw was the BW start to fall off from 1.4Mbps down to about 300kpbs over a 30 second period of time, then it stopped altogehter.
Here's a screenshot of the Windows Task Manager.
This "smells" to me like a S/W issue inside the AX. Anyone else seen this?

I can often see up to 3 other 2wire wireless routers (AT&T DSL) from my laptop. So can the other computers in my home. This does not prevent them from logging on to MY 2wire router, and they seem to network just fine.
My Panasonic wireless phone system works on a diffrent band - 1.9GHz
The Airport Express units are 6' and 13' from the 2wire wireless router.  The one that is 13' is in the same room but near the floor, with no walls blocking it from the 2wire, which is on the opposite side of the room, 6' off the ground, and right at the doorframe of an open door leading to the rest of the house. The one that is 6' away is literraly just the other side of that open doorway- on a shelf approxmatly 6' off the ground.
I have computers that are working with the 2wire that are up to 50 ' away- and up to three rooms and a hall away. The laptops go anywhere in the house- or in the back yard, the garage, and the driveway- and all connect fine.
I cant see this as an interference issue since it is just these two devices- which worked perfectly for years, and now neither will connect- both quitting at the same time.  What are the odds?
I suspect it is an Airport softwear update that "broke" them, but I cant proove it.
Also,  why is it that neither will even log on for a little while, or be intermittent?

  • TM not showing the drive connected to Airport Extreme....

    Hi
I've been backing up to a USB drive connected to Airport Extreme since I installed Leopard with no problem.. Since 10.5.6 it stopped working. I ended up erasing the drive, reformatting it, reseting the Airport Extreme, repair permissions, used Onyx and Applejack and still this is what I'm getting:
When I go select the drive from the TM prefs. it doesn’t show. If I connect it to the laptop first. accept the TM offer to use it as its HD and connect it back to the Airport. I can mount the drive but when trying to start a manual back up. TM gives me the msg. “The back up volume is not in Mac OS Extended (journaled) format which is required”. I formated the drive one more time, just in case and same thing. Last I did a full back up with another drive having it connected directly to the USB port and it worked fine.
I am running all this from my main Admin profile with file vault enable. I have another Admin profile without the file vault enable as an emergency because of a past experience and don’t really use it. and I have the guest acc. enabled.
    Does anyone have any ideas??
    Thank you.

backups to directly attached drives work differently (and are stored differently) from network backups. they are not interchangeable. also, while in the past TM backups to air disks worked, they are not officially supported by apple so it's possible that 10.5.6 update broke that functionality. You can try the following terminal command which helps to show unsupported volumes.
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
see if the airdisk shows up as a possible TM disk after that.
