SOS my ipod has gone useless

Hi, I have an 80gb Ipod classic and recently it started pausing and skipping songs randomly, i took it to the only Istore available in Peru and they said that since it was out of warranty (by 26 days!) they couldn't touch it but that I should try repairing it. So I downloaded the latest itunes and repaired the ipod and now it cannot sync with my library, it starts copying the songs and about halfway through it freezes and delivers an error message and when i eject the ipod its empty. sometimes itunes even gives me a message that it cannot read the ipod and that i should restore it again. I've done that several times and still no result!!
Help me please... I love my ipod... =(
Fran

Hmmm. Are you being completely open with us?
If it was dropped by friend or family, other threads here on this phenomemna indicate slapping it on the back a couple of times with increasing intensity caused the screen to return to normal....but no comment on how long it remained normal. Do a search on this forum for "red screen."
If you can state with certainty that it was not dropped, and if it is still under extended warranty, and if the Apple store believes you, they may give you a rebuilt one.

  • My IPod has gone quiet and part of the screen doesn't show anymore.

My purse fell with my IPod in it yesterday and now most of the screen has gone blank although the backlight covers the whole screen. I can scroll down and choose songs, which do come up, but they don't actually play. So that means the sound is shot too.
It is just the middle 2 1/2 lines that show. No battery icon and no track progress line. I have tried resetting it and plugging it in, but that does not work.
I have AppleCare and am thinking of taking it in to a local service provider from the list on this site, but am not sure if that will work.
It was originally bought in December 2004 and already replaced once at the end of 2005 because of battery issues. The AppleCare was purchased just after that.
Will it still be possible, do you think, to get it repaired or replaced again?

  • So, I'm assuming my iPod has gone up to that big motherboard in the sky.

I own a 3G 30GB iPod that's served me dutifully for the last three or so years, and tonight I'm findind that it's giving me issues.
First of all, the iPod will be stuck at the black apple bootup logo for 5 to 10 minutes, much longer than the normal 1 minute. When it finally does get to the "Do Not Disconnect" screen, it will mount on my desktop, but accessing it via finder only yields the lovely "spinning pinwheel". iTunes, also, does not respond while the iPod is plugged in, even though iTunes recognizes it's plugged in.
It seems that iTunes will recognize the iPod, prompt me to install an update, and then leave the iPod mounted in the finder but not in iTunes. All in all it seems to take 20-30 minutes for it to mount, ask for the update, and then unmount.
It does not restart on it's own. I have to manually unplug it for it to restart. When doing so, the finder and iTunes become responsive once again. After the iPod boots up with the little progress meter seen after an update, it will cycle back to the black apple, where it will stay there for 5-10 minutes, and then the process will start over.
Sometimes, the iPod will start it's automated disk check. After doing this for about 30 minutes, I'll get a "check", which I assume means "all okay", and then the iPod will restart, starting this whole dang cycle over again.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried restoring the iPod by pressing and holding the play/pause button and the select button for 10 seconds?
Have you tried the 5 R's?
(see Apple Support site for article)
Have you tried enabling it for disk use and taking it out of it again to try to 'wake the system up'?
If you have tried all of these then I am sorry to tell you that your iPod has flatlined...
You will want to put it back in its' cube and put it aside so you can remember your good times with it.
(I have just gone through the same situation)

  • My iPod has gone crazy

I recently received a new iPod from Apple that because my old wasn't working. This one has been having problems too. At first, it would sometimes start to skip songs, (with a little rewind symbol constantly in the corner where the play symbol was supposed to go) and I had to run the battery down and recharge it to get it to go away.
Then it stopped playing any songs, it would just go to the next song on the album without playing any one. Then when I let the battery run down, it was frozen on the Apple icon when I recharged it with the charger. Then I plugged it into the computer and it showed the charging symbol that means you need to plug it into the charger for the first time.
So I did, and it loaded the iPod like the time I first got it and asked what language I wanted it in and all my songs were gone. Now every time I plug it into the computer iTunes won't recognize it, and every time I unplug it it resets itself again and asks me for the language and I still can't put any songs on it.
    HELP??

  • My ipod has gone into recovery mode for no reason at all

So I was in Sri Lanka for the past 2 months volunteering, and I took my ipod with me. My camera was unfortunately out of action from day one, so I used my (very crappy) ipod camera to take photos for the entire time that I was in Sri Lanka.
I had been there almost two months, I was in the last week of my stay when my ipod all of a sudden turns itself off when I was using it. It wouldn't come back on, and it was fully charged. I even tried plugging it in but it did nothing. It wouldn't come back on for two days, and then I tried it and it just says 'connect to itunes'. So I got home yesterrday and plugged it into itunes, and it says that my ipod is in recovery mode and has to be restored. However, if I restore it, I will lose ALL of my photos from Sri Lanka!!
I have tried googling this problem for a while and can't seem to find a solution. My home button does not work which is another pain.
But can someone please help me and tell me a way to save my photos?! I don't care about anything else, I cannot lose those photos They obviously aren't backed up either because I didn't have my computer at any point in Sri Lanka so it hasn't been connected to an itunes at any point in those photos being taken.
    Thanks.

  • Ipod has gone to the dogs.

I've had my ipod for about 2 weeks now, and I'd like to think I've been babying it. But most recently it has had trouble being recognized by both Windows and I tunes. I struggled with it for a while and finally I got it to recognize, and I restored my ipod, thinking that would fix it. Not only did it not fix it, I haven't been able to get it to recognize since, so now I'm stuck with an I pod with no music. I've tried entering into the diagnostic mode thinking I would test if it was somehow damaged, but once I get into the diagnostic mode I'm unable to run any test or even scroll through the tests, it just shows me the diagnostic menu and thats about it.
Another suspicious occurrence is that for some time before it stopped working all together it would say "ipod nano Fire Wire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided. Press the Center to dismiss" , but I wasn't using a fire wire connection. Sometime during my quest to fix my ipod this error stopped appearing, and so now it gives me no error.
help me obi wan kenobi you're my only hope.

I recieved my ipod nano and for 2 glorious days it worked. Then my pc could no longer detect it, it just said "malfunctioned usb device" and didnot appear in itunes. The Nano just has the menu as opposed to the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" screen
After a long and arduous day i managed to fix the problem.
By clicking on this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 it tells you how to fix it.
i just did this - (with the ipod connected to the pc)
    1) turn hold on, and then off,
2)then press menu and the center select button simultaiously for 6 seconds
    3)the apple logo appears
4)then it goes back to the menu briefly, and then goes to the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" screen
5)open itunes, wait a minute and your nano will appear
    Wahooooo!
    hope this helps everyone!
    Ben

  • My Ipod has gone dodgy

Ok when i turn my ipod on, it makes swirling sound for about 2 minutes then displays a picture of the ipod with an unhappy face expression with the link to apple's support website.
Couldn't find anything related to my problem so im asking here, basically it makes a clicking sound and a swirling sound, i tried charging it, same thing, doesn't work when plugging it into PC it just in fact does nothing other than display www.apple.com/support and the picture,
I have the click wheel early 40 gig ipod model from 2004 I think, its not been bumped or dropped ever yet, and certainly hasn't recently near the time of this issue.
What could it be? It kinda sounds like the mini hard drive in there is getting stuck or something, very wierd. I tried reset aswell which done nothing.
    Any help is much appreciated

http://www.ifixit.com/ has all iPod Hard Drive parts, and the installation guides too. I have had extremely good service from them, and they also offer a warranty on parts. If any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
