SOS style beeps on P.O.S.T.

What do 3 short, 3 long, 3 short beeps, mean at POST, on a MA876LL, iMac7,1?
It does nothing else! No light on display.
I looked in the answers for decoding beeps, but the listseems to show only one beep to five beeps, not a series as this.
Could be major failure indication??

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll try that fix.
Unfortunately the apple support threads on 'POST beeps' only list a single sequence, 1 to 5  beeps in both
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547
Since posting this thread, the 'More Like This' helpful suggestions, on the right side, has turned up two similar beep sequence experiences. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538?viewlocale=en_US
and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
So I have a couple of others to check too.
Thank you again for your help. It's most encouraging.
Clive.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
You can ignore those messages: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
I'd use Disk Utility to do a "verify disk" operation. If it reports problems, reboot your Mac to a "shift" key held down to boot into "safe mode", which runs a "repair disk" operation, then reboot normally.

  • My Mac book pro freezes up and makes a weird noise.

Last night I was attempting to se my MacBook Pro and I turned it on. It allowed me to go through the normal functions to start up, log in and password as I have it locked from start up, however right after that, it froze up and made the oddest error style beep.  Sounded like an emergency broadcast beep that you hear on tv. Anyway, I powered down to cold boot and once it booted up again, it did the same thing.  No error message was given just freezing up and the weird noise.  I decided to power dwindling again and plug it in to a power source and it worked fine.  When I unplugged it again, of course it froze up and made that beeping noise.  I thinking it's the battery but I'd like some input before driving to the apple store to buy a new battery and it still won't fix the problem.

At a REAL Apple store they will look at it, run some diagnostics and give you an opinion of what might be causing the freezing when on battery power. Also they will give you an estimate on fixing the problems they find.
If you take it to an Authorized Apple Repair center then they might charge you to run the diagnostics.

  • Mac Air is dark and emits three short beeps/three long beeps/three short beeps ("SOS"). What does this mean?

Mac Air was left on power attached to a monitor overnight. In the morning there was a message that I had to turn it off by depressing the "on" key for over then seconds. I did this and it would not turn off. It is now emitting three short beeps followed by three long and three shorts ("SOS" in morse code). What does this mean?

If what I read is correct, you will need to take your MBA to Apple to have its firmware restored.
I cannot explain why this happened.

  • Sos beeping - won´t turn on

I press the power button and my quite new macbook (Leopard) is beeping "SOS" (short-short-short-long-long-long-short-short-short) , the LED in the front, right, is blinking - this ist repeating until I turn it off by pressing the power button for a longer time. What happend?

Used the Apple EFI Resoration CD 1.1.6 right now. Seems to work. But the manual is a little wrong, when you hold the power button when powering up, it won't work. Just power on, insert CD.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303469
Restoration successful. Updated EFI normally after that. Works fine now.

  • Mini beeping SOS i swear!

hello to all and i hope someone can help me...
quite new to the wonderful world of mac/apple products. got an imac for christmas and just a couple of weeks ago replaced my old pc with a mini mac.
so, as only kids can manage... my son was watching a youtube video on magic tricks and the screen went all wonky and a message came up saying to shut off the mac. so i reached to the back and held down the power button until it shut off.
i went to power it back up and i swear it was beeping SOS to me. so i have unplugged the power adapter, left it for a couple of hours and it it still beeping at me.
is this a trip back to future shop for a new one?
any advice is welcome and please keep it as easy-speak as possible as my knowledge/terminology is very basic.
    thanks in advance.

New Macs use tones for error codes. Usually three tones a pause and three tones is a message that your RAM is not passing the Power On Self Test that the Mac conducts when it is powered on.
Is this the original Apple RAM? Have you installed or had someone install 3rd party RAM?
If it is the Apple RAM, then return to/contact the point of purchase for Apple warranty repair/replacement. If 3rd party return to/contact the point of purchase for their warranty services.
Without good RAM, the startup sequence will not progress and so there is no signal to send to your screen/display.

    Hi Sully99999,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
You mentioned that your MacBook Pro is beeping in the pattern 3 fast, 3 slow, 3 fast; and will not start up.
You can find an explanation of this beep pattern in the following support document:
Mac computers: About startup tones - Apple Support
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones: Indicates EFI ROM corruption is detected and the computer is in EFI ROM recovery mode.
If your Mac does not respond to troubleshooting, you may need to seek service, as mentioned here:
If you hear beeps when your Mac starts up instead of the normal startup tone, your Mac may need to be serviced.
    From:
OS X Mountain Lion: If you hear beeps when your computer starts up
You can find more information about having your MacBok Pro serviced at this link:
Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

  • Imac 27" late 2009 SOS beeps at startup after firmware update

    Here is the story.
After a firmware update, imac did not start up and beeped. The only way to get it to start was to reset the VRAM using the command option P R. Then it was starting fine, but for each reboot I had to do the same.
A firmware update later... And now even that doesn't work.
Could it be the logic board battery? ( computer is 3.5 yrs old and part of it was 2 months in storage so off the grid).
Anyone has had a similar issue before I bring it to the applestore and wait for the overpriced repair?
    Thanks!

    Hi Gus,
    Which beeps?
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)    Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat    No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones    RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button    Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones    Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.

Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

    Not easy to do yourself.
    PS. You reset the PRAM.

  • External Hard Drive Doesn't Appear and Makes a Beeping Sound

I have a Mobile XXS external hard drive from Freecom (approx 460 GB) that works fine on my father's G3 iBook, but when I plug it into my G4 Aluminum Powerbook (OS 10.5) it runs, but doesn't appear on the desktop. It also makes a continuous beeping sound. I want to back up all my music projects. As far as I know the USB ports work because I'm able to use my iPod. This isn't an Apple product but the Freecom website doesn't have a very active forum. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with something like this. I appreciate any help.

It sounds like a USB-only hard drive, and the Powerbook G4 is notorious for not providing enough power for many external USB drives.
    The usual suggestions are:
-Try a double (Y-style) USB cable to draw power from two ports for the drive
-Add a mains power adapter to the drive, if possible
-Try using the drive through a powered USB hub
Firewire drives don't seem to suffer from this problem.

  • 10.7.3, system hang, three beeps, "debugger called: double panic"

    Hi all
    Here are the symptoms:
    0. Otherwise normal system usage; system uptime more than 24 hours.
    1. System freezes.
    2. Three loud beeps, identified as the self-diagnostic report for cases of RAM failure.
    3. Message in console/terminal style characters in the upper left hand corner of the screen: "debugger called: double panic"
    Additional info:
    (A) Does not seem to be timed with installation of new software or new usage pattern.
    (B) Apple "genius" ran hardware diagnostics; RAM as well as all other systems passed.
    (C) This happened before, but I didn't notice of there was a message or whether machine froze
    (D) In response to (C), I had re-seated RAM as instructed in MacBook Pro manual.
    (C) MacBook Pro, mid-2010; Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b); 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3; NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
The "genius" couldn't find anything when he searched what he termed "the knowledge base." He didn't have access to the message, though.
Google has been useless, but I am not that great a google searcher.
I hope no one has had anything similar---but if you have, let me know what, if anything, helped!
    Thanks!

I am re-opening (or rather just continuing) this thread because this problem persists. This time the machine was asleep, with the lid closed, and the three-beep RAM fault alarm started going of. The machine would not wake up and I pushed the power button and held it to turn it off.
I upgraded to 10.7.4 recently (as soon as I was notified by the system update message).
This time, when I restarted, it began indexing the disk using Spotlight. The little flashing dot appeared in the magnifying glass, and if I pulled down the menu, it gave the message that's given when it first begins indexing.
Here is the result of executing the commands recommended above:

  • Syncing styles between Word and RH HTML 7

Question about syncing styles between Word and RH HTML 7.The
printed Word format has Hdr/Ftr, TOC, Title Page stuff.
I understood that, when importing a Word .docx, RH creates
books for Heading 1s and Topic headings are Heading 2. That is why
both Word and RH templates use the same paragraph style names
(though the format in Word/print differs from that in RH/online).
I imported my Word file into a new RH HTML 7 project. The TOC
has the expected books/topics/subtopics. I imported the .css and
the .htt from the RH 5 template project. I selected all 160 topics
in the Topic List pod and applied the corporate .htt template
(Topic Properties > General) AND (to be certain), the corporate
.css stylesheet (Topic Properties . Appearance).
This project doesn't have the same characteristics as the
base/master from RH 5 that uses those same format files. I even
imported the same skin. I get the banner, but not the styles.
All the topic headings in the RH 7 project (were transformed
to) are Heading 1 styles, even though they were Heading 2s in Word.
(this breaks with my tribal knowledge of how RH imports
Books/Topics from a Word doc). The heading colors (navy blue, royal
blue, etc.) have taken on their own definitions--dunno where from,
    tho.
Since I'm OCD about creating and using one style for each
type of paragraph (procedurehead, syntax, procnum, procnonum, note,
bullist) in Word or in RH, Peter Grainger's suggestion to "clean
up" styles before importing shouldn't apply.
RH instructions omit any detail about what to specifiy in the
Conversion Options and Split On Style. I took a couple of swipes at
the SOS--OK, split on Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3. So I get
Books for Heading 1, separate topics for Heading 2 and Heading 3,
but the "topic titles" have become Heading 1 in name but not in
format. In fact, the format doesn't match anything I've specified
in Word or RH. I thought by "attaching" the .htt and the .css to
each topic (select all topics, , I'd have the look and feel I
specified in my corporate RH(5) template. The banner imported, the
navigation pane and icons imported. What happened to the styles?
Here's the missing link that someone may need to explain
(explicitly in Help somewhere). When I open the .htt template
(sample topic) that I imported from RH 5, the topic title shows as
Document > Heading 2 > in the Design view. The HTML view
    labels this paragraph as h2:
    <!doctype HTML public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0

    <h2>NameOfPackage: NameOfMethod</h2>

    Hi Jim,
Don't know how useful my question is now, given that you posted over a year ago.
Do your RH X5 Word source docs use styles?  If so, take a look here, and I detail how I have been able to import from RH X5 for Word to RH 7 HTML.  (I'm currently still working on a leftover issue with Keywords and Subkeywords.)
One thing I have done which probably helped:  while applying new standards to our documentation, we have removed almost all images (screen shots, etc.), and have only retained those images which don't have a text equivalent.  The drastically reduced the import file size of my Word source docs.  All my images were referenced via TrueCode, but upon importing to RH 7 HTML, there was so much less to be processed by RH 7 HTML, that the import went much more easily and quickly.
    I hope this helps,
    Marjorie

  • 9 Beeps (3 short, 3 longer, 3 short)

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro and just downloaded the latest Mac OS update.  My computer will not start since downloading the latest update. My Mac will start with a black screen and 3 short beeps, 3 longer beeps, and 3 short beeps. Then a gray screen with an Apple and progress bar beneath starts to load, and then the screen goes black again and the beeping continues. Please help! I shouldn't have downloaded the latest update quite possibly.

    Morse code for SOS.
It sounds as though a firmware upgrade went badly. You will need to attempt to reload firmware from a CD that you create using another Mac. Read about it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
    (text follows)
The Firmware Restoration CD can restore the firmware of an Intel-based Macintosh computer.
Note: Restoring your firmware will reset some of your computer's preferences to defaults.
You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or unsuccessful update. If your computer is already in this state, you'll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on either a PowerPC- or Intel-based Mac, but only works with Intel-based Macs.
Note: This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer's firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed.
Download the correct Firmware Restoration CD image
You can download the software for the Firmware Restoration CD from Apple Downloads. Different computers use different versions of the Restoration CD. A table on each download page identifies which model is appropriate for which Restoration CD image. To see your Mac's model information (Model Identifier), follow these steps on the computer you will be using the CD with:
From the Apple menu, choose About this Mac.
Click the "More Info" button. This opens System Profiler.
The Model Identifier is located in the Hardware Overview, which is the first window you should see. It looks something like this: "MacBookPro 2,1".
Compare the model information to the list on the download page in order to choose the correct Restoration CD image to download for your computer.
Restoring firmware with a Firmware Restoration CD
To restore your computer's firmware, you must first create a CD using the disk image named "FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg" by following these steps:
Open Disk Utility (located at /Applications/Utilities).
Click the Burn icon or select the "Burn..." menu item from the Images menu.
Navigate to where FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg is located, and click the Burn button.
    Insert a blank recordable CD
Click the Burn button to create the Firmware Restoration CD. The files are burned to the disc.
Next, use the Firmware Restoration CD to restore your Firmware:
Make sure that the computer you are trying to restore is plugged into an AC outlet.
Turn on the computer and continue holding the Power button. The sleep LED will blink rapidly, then slowly, then rapidly (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3 quick blinks).
On Macs that don't have a sleep LED, tones are used instead. Hold down the power button until you hear 3 long tones, then 3 short tones, then 3 long tones.
On Macs that use a tray-load optical drive, the tray will open to allow the Restoration CD to be inserted.
Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking or tones sounding, then release the Power button. A long tone is played once the recovery process has started.
A progress bar appears beneath an Apple logo on a gray screen. The progress bar indicates the firmware is being updated. Do not disconnect power, shut down, or restart the computer during the update or you will need to start the restoration process again beginning with step 6.
Please let me know if this works for you. If it does not I believe a trip to the Genius Bar will be your only recourse, since it is likely the logic board has a failure that you will not be able to fix.
    Good luck.

  • 9 Beeps at start up

When I press the power button, the my the cd drive starts up then winds down and I get a series of beeps. 3 quick, 3 slow, and 3 more quick. Yes, that is morse code for SOS. How ironic. After about 30 seconds, the whole process starts again... cd drive starts up, winds down and the series of beeps. Also, during this, the screen does not come on. I've inserted the install disc, but no luck. I've done the reset steps that the troubleshooting tells me to do, but to no avail. The only thing that I know that may have contributed to this is when I initially pressed the power button to start up, I noticed the button was stuck in a recessed position, like it was being held down. I saw the button was a little **** eyed, so I pressed and twisted until it became flush again. Called the help line, but it's past operating hours. Any help from any one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In my case the problem was an unsuccessful firmware upgrade.
It can be resolved with a Firmware restoration CD.
