Sound Advice

I've got a recording of a school play where there are quiet bits (talking) and loud bits (singing). What advice can anyone offer for an easy way to get a more compressed dynamic range?
I think that the compressor filter would be the right thing, but am having trouble getting the right parameters. I don't really want to have to go along with the pen tool to change the level up and down if I can avoid it, but it seems the least bad way so far!

Sounds like the Compressor/Limiter filter is right for you. From the manual:
• Threshold: This parameter defines how loud the signal must be before the compressor is applied. This is the most important setting you need to adjust.
• Ratio: This slider determines how much compression is applied. Don’t overdo the compression; a little goes a long way. Too much compression can reduce the dynamic range to a flat, unvarying signal.
• Attack Time: This setting determines how quickly the filter reacts to changes in audio level (the default is usually acceptable, but you may want to experiment).
• Release Time: This setting defines how slowly the filter lets go of the change in audio level that it made (again, the default should work well, but feel free to experiment).
• Preserve Volume: Compensates for the attenuation of the clip caused by compression by raising the level of the entire clip by a uniform amount.

  • Speaker/sound advice

A kinda off topic question but hopefully someone can help:
I want some advice on a sound setup for my home, i want surround sound in my livingroom with wireless speakers for use this with my tv, PC, Hi-fi and maybe other appliances.
Also i would like to be able to (if not straight away) roll this setup to other speakers in other rooms of the house and be able to control which appliances/speakers are in use.
I wasnt sure where to start with this, but figured music junkies who use the apple forum might be a good source of knowledge! if you think im asking in the wrong place then a link to a more suitable place would be helpfull
as you can likely guess im on a kinda budget, so the cheaper the better!

    Hello peterrayner,
It sounds like after updating to iOS 7 your earpiece speaker is not working correctly and you must use the speaker.
I would recommend a few things here.
First close all the apps that are running on the device.
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Pro sound advice

    Hi there,
Ive been using Logic for a short time now ad I just have a couple questions about the best way to input/output the sound, I know not specifically Logic related but hopefully the amount of Pro users in the forum should be able to help!
I use Logic to record both my solo projects (guitar/vocals/midi) and my band demos though usually only one or two tracks at a time, ie we'll track the drums and bass, then go away and record guitars, then put vocals on at another time. Needless to say I am a musician and not a recording engineer, I just know my way around the software to a certain degree.
So for sound input, I have this question.
I just bought an M-Audio Firewire Solo, as I needed an interface quickly and this is what they had in the Apple store. It cost me about £150 ($300). To be honest, I am really happy with it, and it works well with Logic. But every time I see the Apogee Duet I really want one. Would I really notice a huuuge improvement in sound quality and is it worth it for my recording needs? Its like $600, and having just bought the M-Audio device (unfortunately out of the returns period) I just want to know if it is really worth it? I know Apogee owners love their Duet and I understand they are supposed to be awesome but in an honest and unbiased opinion, would I benefit enough ($600 worth) to warrant buying one?
    Secondly, regarding output.
Currently I am relying on hifi speakers (good ones nonetheless) when I am home, and in ear earphones when I am out and about to monitor tracks.
I want to buy some good headphones, or monitors, but not sure which to go for! I am probably using Logic 40% at home and 60% on the go or elsewhere. Could I realistically get some great headphones and use them both at home and on the go, or would I be better off getting monitors for home?
All advice is much appreciated thankyou!
    Tom

    Thanks for the replies.
I think for now I will stick to the M-Audio and probably end up dropping the cash on the Duet when I see one in a store. The online images are tempting enough but I think I can restrain myself. If I saw it on display somewhere, it may well be a different story.
Regarding the MOTU interface. For now, if I ever record my band, it is all tracked seperately. For example, our singer goes to college a few hours away drive from the rest of the band during some of the year so we'll get the drums recorded proffessionally then take the mix home and I will add guitars. Then I'll take my Macbook to the bass player and lay down his part. Then email the mix to our singer who will put her vocals on and send it back. If you see what I mean. This is all just for demo's and quick recordings, our full-lengths and press demo's are all recorded and mastered completely proffessionally. With this in mind, I think single input, or mic/guitar input is fine for what I need.
As for the monitors/headphone suggestion, I think I will invest in both following both your advice.
You outlined exactly my situation, I will sit in a coffee shop and shuffle a few parts around so I will invest in some headphones.
I guess it might be time to get some monitors too.
    Thanks for the replies!

  • Sound advice from BT's business partner Lithium

I was curious about who and what is behind our new forums, so popped over to the Lithium site and wandered around a bit. BT seem to have chosen a partner who has a good pedigree in online communities.
A Lithium Guru, one PaulGi, has some great advice for opening up positive dialogue scenarios that can benefit customers and businesses alike:
With those people who have a genuine gripe about a product, the advice is engage them in a dialogue.
To be successful, the community users should feel they can post comments that aren't all positive - opinion is the lifeblood of a community.   If users feel they can post without being censored then you're going to get valuable material, and the community will start to self police itself.  It's important to note that comments like "I had a terrible experience with this product" should be answered - engage these people "sorry to hear about your experience, can you tell me what the issue was, or how we could have improved it?"
I hope that BT will follow their partner's very sound and perceptive advice, and that these forums will indeed give the opportunity for some deep serious polite debate and sharing of information about any relevant matter, even though the subject might sometimes ruffle feathers.

I wonder what PaulGi would think of my problem:
I was going to start a discussion about General Discussion's perceptive post :
I am beginning to get a little worried by the way the new forum is shaping up.  Towards the end of last year, I had begun to get the feeling that many of the "difficulties" that had been encountered in respect of the Phorm Phiasco were now behind us, the Forum Mods were showing a friendlier and more helpful side and by and large the forum was becoming a very useful place.
We now have a new forum, but less than a week in, all that good-will seems to be leaking away at an increasing rate of knots.
Why is that?  Well,  2, or maybe 3, examples of privacy and security issues that have all come to a head simultaneously.  The reaction to these being raised seems to be at least a partial reversion to the "bad old days". I thought we had moved beyond all this - but sadly not.
My peers believe this is a problem, I think they may be right, I wish to hear the evidence and to discuss it - and if it appears to be compelling, I wish to ask for - no, demand, change.  I wish to know how many of my peers here on the forum agree, or disagree with whatever arguments are being raised - which seems to me to be the essence of what this forum purports to be.
    Discuss.
But the way this forum is turning out makes me feel like I am treading on eggshells: whatever I start to write I have to delete for fear it could be interpreted by the mods as "calling them out" or at least being critical of them, and I'll get banned, so I'm not going to say anything

  • SOUND ADVICE REQUIRED!

    Hi Folks,
I've got an iMac G5 20" (have had it around 6 months). Just did a Software Update, and downloaded some widgets, and now the sound on all my games won't work. iMovie, iTunes, system noises etc all working fine but just no sound at all in the games, which were previously working fine.
Can anyone help? Tried the settings in the game menus etc and that didn't help...

There is a little-known but rather crucial sound configuration application called "Audio MIDI Setup" located in "Applications/Utilities".
In here you can set things like sample rates etc, and can also set your system volume independently for each speaker. Some buggy apps mess with the balance between the left and right speaker, and the place to fix this is in Audio MIDI Setup. (The only app I've personally noticed with this bug is a C64 emulator, but theres bound to be more.)
    Hope this helps!

  • Please can somebody please give me some sound advice!

    Hi There,
I hope that I've posted this in the correct forum? apologies if I haven't.
I was hoping to get some advice from you guy's/girls please, I would like a change in career and over the last
year have been teaching myself Microsoft Office Suite (only completed Word Fully) and now exploring Excel (which has so much more to it than I originally thought, I was so naive), I was hoping to get a starting position on a help desk that deals with queries
within the office suite and hopefully one day build up to qualifying as a Microsoft Office Expert.
So I found a online training company who would do the starting qualifications (Microsoft Office Specialist)
for £200, quite reasonable i thought although the exams would be £80 each, again not too bad.
The person I spoke to though told me that it wasn't necessary to take the exams as I could put on my CV that
I have completed training with this company. and that employers would do a skill set anyway. To be fair I thought that a little strange but as I'm just starting out who am I?
Anyway I done a little research by calling a employment agency that deals with IT positions and was advised
that maybe I needed to get an MCSE first as that might be able to get me started as they haven't come across Microsoft Office Specialist Roles.. but this is I feel going in a completely different direction.
So I looked online and the only Microsoft Office Specialist positions that I came across is ones that included
    knowing Active Directory DS?
I only wish that there was a company that would take on people who trained on the job..
    Please help!

The training company is right in that if you take the training you can add it to your CV. If you get the certification you can also add it to your CV. Both things will be looked at favourably by potential employers. But the training company is also right
when they say that neither will be enough: the employers will want to assess your skills themselves anyway. This doesn't mean that it is useless to get certified. It will help to get your CV "up" in the stack of CVs, so that your chances of getting
to the interview stage (rather than being discarded right away) will increase. It is up to you to demonstrate your value during the interview, but first you need to reach that stage.
The employment agency is also partially right in that a MOS certification may not be enough if you are looking for a Help Desk position. This type of position typically also requires knowledge of the operating systems and the supporting network infrastructure,
and even the computer hardware, so additional certifications would be needed to prove this knowledge. Once again, you don't require the certification as an absolute requirement; if you have the knowledge, you can state so in your CV and the employer will evaluate
you. But having the certification can help distinguish your CV over others that don't have it.

  • Quick and dirty sound advice...

...bit off topic I know but:
Filming just the service part of a friends wedding tomorrow. With their little Sony Handycam, hiding in a bush for sake of discretion. Want to put a mic by the couple so you hear them, not the bush rustling.
I have an ECM personal mic and a lollypop/reporter mic both XLR, and a tiny Audio Technica personal mix which is mono mini jack.
Has anyone got some quicky kludges to attach any of those mics to the camera. No idea what camera but I imagine it has one of those wee plug-in-power sockets...
Thanks, in advance, for your wisdom

    For backing up:
    I save my tapes
On disc I put music, Livetype/Soundtrack files, pictures etc
    I put my project files
I don't bother with the render files; I can just render them out later
If you have been circumspect with properly logging your reels, you can re-build everything with Capture Project

I don't get it.  I need to have some songs on my site and I'm using Flash Builder 4.5.  I don't need a graphical player or any

  • Advice: CC or Installment Loan

I need some sound advice. I am trying to figure out the best approach to my only financial/Fico issue. I have an AMEX card with a $11,000 CL at 12.5%. . I have thought about asking for a CLI. I owe a balance of $8,000 on it. My intention is to have it paid off or nearly paid off by the end of the year through monthly payments. I don't have any pressing concern right now, but I do intend to buy a house next year about this time. Questions: 1) Should I apply for a card that I could expect to get a high CL with a BT of 0.00%? or                     2) Apply for an Installment loan through Lending Club? I have a guaranteed 5.99% offer with them for up to $35,000.                     3) Or should I just continue paying it down as I have done, and not do either above option? My FICO 8 scores are:  EX: 771, TU: 761, and EQ: 743The FICO simulator shows if the balance (my outstanding revolving debt) on the AMEX card is paid off my scores would go to 809 on EX, 801 on TU and 793 on EQ.The only thing I have is a car note for a new Jeep I bought lat November. Thanks for ALL your help!

    Gridium wrote:
The way I personally would play that scenario would be to pay down the Amex. The reason is a new account could hit your average age of account, possibly significantly depending on how many accounts in total are on your CR. I don't know exactly what that would translate into in terms of Fico hit and mortgage rate, but I would be hesitant to risk the possibility of a better(even if only slightly better) mortgage rate in a situation where I'm capable of just paying down a balance in a few months. Getting the best possible mortgage rate is going to be a much bigger money saver over the long run, than getting a 0% APR on a relatively small short term debt that it sounds like you're set to pay off in 4 or 5 months anyway. I would also, if I hadn't already in that scenario, talk to my credit union's lending department(or whoever I was hoping to finance my house through) about my situation and get some feedback from them, ideally after providing them with a copy of my full credit report(to avoid them doing a hard pull).I would concur. Just pay it down normally. At best you save a few hundred bucks by getting a loan or 0% transfer card, but you risk lowering your scores - possibly below a rate threshold.

  • Need advice on organizing/importing - don't really understand

Greetings. I am new to aperture and am having a really hard time wrapping my head around the best way to organize my photos and would love some sound advice.
First, I don't like importing into the aperture library and really prefer all of my images to be referenced. I don't like how apple sort of hides the files when imported to the apple library and would love to know how to get originals that I have already imported into the library back out into a folder. I have four folders on an HD that are pretty mutually exclusive like :
    Weddings
    ProductShots
    PointAndShoot
DumpNEFs (all raw files that don't fit into the others, large folder by far).
I think It would be best to organize them into "projects" in aperture in the same huge four categories. Is there any performance downside to their being so many photos in an album or referenced to folders with thousands of images?
Beyond the huge project structure, I get really confused, perhaps because of the other mac software I use like iTunes. Let's say I want to break weddings up like so:
    Weddings
    Tom and Cindy
    Jack and Jill
    Fred and Wilma
    misc
basically, I want it to work like a folder structure where I put them into buckets and I can see what is left over without a bucket so I can organize it later. But when I import into the project "weddings" and then want to add an album later to organize what I imported, it just copies it (I assume copies versions) into that album. And I can't put photos into a folder. I don't want it to copy it, I want to move it OUT of an unorganized state INTO an organized state.
I know every person's work flow is different. But I really like dumping my photos in one place, importing them into a huge bucket so I can run off and do something else, and then returning to organize into smaller buckets that I come up with later, add keywords, rate etc. I like a place that holds all of those photos I haven't yet touched. Does that make sense?
I think this is just the tip of the iceberg of my lack of understanding. But before I start the process of moving all of my images into aperture (as refs) I want to have a good understanding of organization. Fair enough?
Your help, suggested work flows, etc would be GREATLY appreciated.
    -i

I think you have the jist of it. I work in a similar way. I created different folders say for Weddings, portraits. For me, under the Wedding Folder I created another folder for the year and then under the year, created a project for each wedding. Under that wedding you can create a smart album so that on the project you can rate the images and on the smart album just filter the star rating and those are the images you need to work on.

  • Lower sound quality / lower bass after upgrade to Windows 8

Hello, just upgraded to Windows 8 on my Pavilion m7.
Before, my audio quality was rich and bassy, using Beats Audio, and after the upgrade sounds poor and quite muted. No matter what I do, I cannot improve quality especially with the deep bass. I am using external speakers, not the ones built in laptop.
In order to troubleshoot, I did a factory restore back to Windows 7... sounded fantastic. When I redid a clean 8 install on top of that, back to the same lack of bass.
Has anybody else experienced something like this?

    Hi Zerxiisiis,
Sorry to hear about your audio issue during the upgrade. I will be happy to assist you with that. There are a couple of things that you can try. The first is uninstalling your current audio driver. Uninstall it through device manager.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff553572(v=vs.85).aspx
Then download and install your audio driver again. I have included the link below.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff553572(v=vs.85).aspx
If that doesn't work you might just need to adjust your equalizer settings for your Beats Audio. I have included a link to a thread where a user has posted some good levels.
