Sound aok everywhere except dvd playback.

In recent weeks... suddently my dvd playback seems dead.
Video fine...just no audio via the HDMI via the HP w2408h monitor.
AOK via headset even with DVD.
AOK on sound in all other cases other than DVD.
Music & all else aok...and even  past video...recorded.
Am assuming that I did something, but I havent installed anything new in 5 months other than 4 games (for grandkids) and TEXTPAD (related to schoolwork).
And those games were installed for weeks before the dvd sound disappeared..
Current solution is to use headset when I want to watch dvd.
I can still do everything else as if dvd wasnt problmatic right now.
Drivers & updates - everything is current ...

If you haven't already, try a few different discs and see if it's repeatable. If so, and there's an Apple Store near you, I'd take it there and see if it will repeat for them.

  • No Sound During DVD Playback

I have a new HP elitebook 8460p and there is no sound during DVD playback. Is there a setting I may be able to change? Here is a list of things I've tried and pertinent information:
    - Confirmed all system mute settings are off (e.g., not muted)
    - Confirmed DVD works on other devices
    - DVD will not play sound in InterActual Player, Windows Media Player, or VLC Media Player
    - Picture is fine...just no audio
    - Running XP
    - All other system sounds work
    Help!

  • Sleeps during DVD playback

Why does OS X.4 display go to sleep during Quicktime playback? It doesn't matter if I'm watching something through FrontRow, Quicktime, or the DVD player.
Specifically, when my MacBook is on battery power, my display sleep comes on within a few minutes. It dims first and then sleeps a short time later. All this is normal behavior EXCEPT I don't want it to sleep while playing a DVD. If I'm watching a DVD, sleep mode should never happen.
My other mac computers do the same thing but its less noticeable since the display sleep delay times are longer.
What settings am I missing or perhaps this is a bug?

I'm sorry my first post was too brief. I should have mentioned my settings before. I'm not a newbie looking for location of Energy Saver settings and I'm not quite sure why it should matter.
What possible combination of settings would allow the computer or display to sleep during DVD or Quicktime playback?
    Settings for: Battery
    Optimization: Normal
Reduce brightness for this power source- checked
    Reduce brightness before sleep- checked
It will never sleep if the mouse is moving regardless of Energy Saver settings, right? Why should the display ever be put to sleep during playback of a DVD? It's like the OS never recognizes DVD & Quicktime video playback as actively using the computer.
    Questions:
Does yours go to sleep during DVD playback?
    What settings are you using?
I suspect this is an OS X.4 bug as I've caught one of my PPC macs going to screen-saver in the middle of playing a Quicktime movie clip.
Thank-you for your help... I really appreciate it even if it sounds otherwise.

  • No sound when playing a DVD on my Lenovo 3000 N200 (0769-A44)

    Hi,
I recently got an N200 under Vista Home Premium.  Everything is doing well, except an annoying problem with PowerDVD 7 which is factory-installed.  When I play a DVD with PowerDVD, there is no sound.  With Windows Media player, MediaCenter and even MediaPlayer Classic, the sound is there.  Only with PowerDVD is there no sound.
Any hint on how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

Update 2008-04-30 : the problem only appears when playing commercial DVD that rely on AC3 codec for sound. For recorded DVD that use MPEG2-Layer2, sound is OK. Seems to be a limitation of PowerDVD OEM. However, if there is a solution ...

Thanks for sharing this. For the moment, and until someone finds a solution, I am relying on WMP and also on an opensource player that can play DVD, Media Player Classic :

Very easy to use. May be it will solve your problem with the DVD player noise ? There is also an excellent media play, that plays DVD, and that I intend to install : JetAudio 7, from Cowon.

Hi. Having problems with DVD playback on 1 Ghz Powerbook G4 12 ". When trying to view in full-screen (or even sometimes in maximum) mode, screen simply goes black. Sound still works, but no visuals. As soon as I revert back to Normal size, visuals play fine.
Any ideas ? This is a problem which has developed rather than being with the machine since I bought it. Just for the record, I have 1.25 GB RAM installed and am running 10.4.5.

  • DVD playback blurry with Kaffeine/Xine

    Hi guys,
I wanted to watch my first DVD under Linux yesterday and I noticed that the image quality is really, really bad compared to watching the same DVD under Windows with PowerDVD.
DVD playback in Kaffeine with Xine engine is really blurry. Does anybody know what the reason could be? There's a lot of options for xine engine parameters in Kaffeine, but I don't have a clue about them. Any tipps appreciated.
I've also tried kmplayer, but the image there has small black horizontal lines in it, which looks really weird. I thinks that's called interlaced, right? I'm a total video noob. ^^

  • Dvd-playback is terrible

got a new mac mini dual core .. hooked it up to my toshiba 30" tv .. works fine .. BUT: dvd-playback in frontrow and dvd-player and quicktime isn't like butter, isn't like dvd-playback from my 30 euro dvd-player .. it's terrible! it trembles, it stops, sound an picture aren't simultaneously. i tried it with 10 dvds .. all the same.
so it's useless. i will send it back to apple.
    12 PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Indeed, resolution does not really matter in your case, as you do not seem to be trying to playback HD video, just normal DVDs. BVut that's not the problem. No Mini, would it be the original 1.25 Ghz with 256 MB of RAM will playback DVDs fine. Your Mini's behavior is not normal, and shows that there is a problem with it. It is not a problem with Dual-Core Minis, or even with the integrated graphics, it is a problem with your Mini. It could be that the optical drive is faulty, or a thousand other things, but your Mini is definitely capable of performing better than it does now. What I mean is that is needs some troubleshooting, or maybe even repair, but that once it gets fixed, DVDs will play fine.
Of course, you can take it back to Apple if you want (it's been 6 days since your original post, so if your really intend to do so, you'd better do it fairly soon). In the meantime you could give us more information about your Mini and the issues you're experiencing (expecially regarding what you meant by DVD playback in QuickTime - see my other post) so that we can try to help you and make your Mini as fast as it ought to be ...

  • Extract image from DVD, add different sound and burn new DVD?

I am a composer for film and TV. My clients send me DVDs that have inferior sound. I would like to extract the image from the DVD, add a better sound file (48k16bit) and drop this in iDVD to create a final DVD. How do I do this?

It seems to me that you have 2 choices. 1) ask the clients to send a DV tape instead of disc. Import using program using program of choice (iMovie, FCE, FCP). Delete the audio (or not even import it) and drop you audio in- send to DVD. This is the best option as you shouldn't lose any visual quality. 2) De-Mux the DVD so that you have an audio/video stream. Google demux and I am sure a few solutions will pop up. In essence, a DVD has the audio/video "muxed", kid of a combination clip for DVD playback. You want to separate "clips", one for audio, one for video. Then replace the audio and send to DVD. The catch here is that you will lose some quality in the video by taking it from one format to another format back to the original format. A third solution may exist if the DVD you are sent do NOT have muxed files. If they already have a separate file for audio and video... but I doubt it.

  • Multi region DVD playback

I have a 27" iMac and it's set to Region 2 for it's DVD playback. I used to have a cheap DVD player that could play any DVD region, but that went the way of the dodo sometime early last year. Now I have a stack of Region 1 DVDs that I want to rip to my hard disk, but any application I try (even VLC and Handbrake) refuse to play or rip the disk. It either crashes or appears to have frozen before spitting the disk back out at me.
I was going to buy a cheap USB DVD drive in the hopes that it would play the DVDs, but I'm not sure if the region lock is part of the OS (therefore making the USB drive worthless) or part of the firmware on the internal drive (making the USB drive plausible).
Does anybody have a solution? Free if possible.
    Thanks

I'm in the same boat, but a bit worse off. I'm a Canadian, with a Canadian-purchased late-2008 Aluminum MacBook. BEST laptop I've ever owned. Except for the Matshita DVD drive, which has now used up its 5 allowed region swaps. I made sure the last one was to Region 2 (Canada/USA). But since I've been living in a Region 4 region now for years, my MacBook can't play any media coded for this region. There is also no firmware flash available for this drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868).
There is no logical or commercial reason for region coding. It is particularly onerous for those of us with portable Macs who travel / live internationally....

  • Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?

First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.
Thanks Apple. I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.
Thanks and sorry for the rant, but I'm justifiably frustrated.

Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.

  • Multiple sound tracks on a DVD?

Is there any low cost/free DVD authoring software that would allow me to put 2 alternative sound tracks on a DVD? DVD Studio is out of my reach, especially since I am not sure I will need that functionality again.
Mac software would be preferred, but a PC would work (yech) if it can record a disk image.
    Thanks-

    12" PB 1 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thank you for all the answers. I have solved the problem with a shareware encoder called FFmpegX.
I had a movie (Battleship Potemkin), and I wanted to add the score that Pet Shop Boys wrote for it, and I wanted to have the original score to be there too, so I could switch between them, depending on which one I wanted to play.
FFmpegX has mux and demux tools, so I created the new sound track in iMovie to make sure it is syncronized with the video, then saved it as an mp2 file, and then used FFmpegX to mux it with the original video. This also allowed me to avoid converting the video between DV and MPEG, so helps to preserve the quality.
The resulting MPEG2 file can be used for DVD authoring in FFmpegX, but it produces really bare bones DVD. I am going to try Toast and iDVD. The tracks are switched by pressing the "audio" button on the DVD player remote, or you can select the track if you use VLC for computer playback. I have not figured out how to swith the audio using the Title menu.
The double video solution is not very desirable, because the movie is over an hour long, and on a single layer DVD I would have to drop the bitrate to half the original.

  • 5500 with audigy DVD Playback probl

I had my logitech 5500's connected to my onboard nvida soundstorm for awhile but i decided to put my old audigy in just for kicks. It installed fine, but i can't seem to find a mixing console or any other software besides the basic audigy console. My 6ch direct is really loud with music and sounds great but when i playback dvd with cyber dvd, the volume is severely diminished and the speech especially could hardly be heard at all.
I adjusted my settings in the audigy audio console with built it decoder and set my cyberplayer settings as SPDIF so the compressed audio would be decoded by my audigy soundcard, but it still doesnt work. any suggestions?

Sound is fine its just the picture that has the problem but I have narrowed it down further by downloading WinDVD Tweaker. If I disable DxVA but leave hardware decode and colour selected the problem isn't present. Therefore I suspect something has corrupted my DxVA   drivers however as I originally had 8.1 installed and then installed 9.0 in an attempt to fix this I don't think a reinstall of DX will solve the problem.
    Any ideas.

  • My MacBook works fine wifi everywhere except for home.  The home wifi is fine with the iPad and iPhone.  How can I fix my MacBook?

My MacBook works fine wifi everywhere except for home.  The home wifi is fine with the iPad and iPhone, so I assume the issue is with my computer.  My computer works fine on wifi networks elsewhere.  The only problem is at home.
The computer "connects to the wifi," but browsers and other internet-dependent software do not work.  Curiously, if I connect the ethernet cord that doesn't work either. Usually if I reset the modem to factory settings twice (for some reason, once doesn't do the trick), my computer will fully connect to the wifi.  However, in a few days, it goes back to not working.
Today, resetting the modem didn't work. I could only get wifi connection while in safe mode, but not in normal mode.  So, the issue seems to be software not hardware. I have tried starting new accounts in normal mode, but those also don't connect properly to internet.
Not sure if this is relevant, but this problem started when my building switched internet providers from ComHem to Telia (I live in Sweden).
What do you recommend I do?
    Thanks!
PS I use Snow Leopard: OS 10.6.8

Not unless the modem is causing a problem.
What you want to do is get it to work reliably over Ethernet first, then tackle wifi. Power off the modem. On your macbook, delete the Ethernet configuration and the Wifi configuration. Power up the modem, then connect the mac via Ethernet. Create the new Ethernet configuration and see if you can connect.

  • DVD playback issue with Windows Media Player

    Hi,
This isn't an Encore specific question, rather, a DVD playback one. Has anyone had issue playing their replicated DVDs in Windows Media Player? I truly believe it's the media player, not the DVD.  When we put a DVD in the drive and try to open it in WMP, it jumps right to a video, or jumps directly to the last place we were in a video.... it's not defaulting to the main menu.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it a programming glitch on my DVD? I feel like it's a WMP issue, as it's only happening on certain computers.
    thanks.

WMP has never been a good player for DVD's. At some point in the past, much of that functionality was disabled my MS, in hopes to reduce piracy. For some versions, no burned DVD would even play, though replicated/pressed DVD's were supposed to play fine.
I use CyberLink's PowerDVD and it is fine, even with my burned DVD's. The free MediaPlayer Classic HC plays my discs well too, with full menuing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

    rickeyt
Thanks for the reply. Great news about the volume adjusts.
Now about those fades for the volume. How are you doing that?
    1. Right click the Timeline video audio and select Fade and then
see the Fade options (I had a video with audio file, so I saw the choices as shown in the screenshot)
    2. You can also create two volume keyframes at each end of the Timeline audio clip rubberband (orange line that goes horizontally across the middle of the audio clip). At the position of the Timeline Indicator, click the Add/Remove Keyframe icon, and then with the mouse cursor position the white dots (volume keyframes) to achieve the Fade In and Fade Out audio. In the screenshot below I have moved the Timeline Indicator so that you could better see the white dots (volume keyframes).
Please let us know if any of the above works for you with regard to the audio fades.
    Thank you.
