Sound Blaster Instability - Are you affected? (Stability Test for "Squealing", et

I've created a test that works on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS with my particular hardware configuration as a proof of concept of the instability ( "high-pitched squealing" ) issues I have. (I have an ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard.) I am seeking to find out if it "works" for other people with squealing issues (i.e. triggers them).
Do our problems really have common symptoms, or a common source? I hope we can find that out, and ideally this would be a step toward that.
I believe it would be helpful for people who have problems with their cards to post some system information, along with descriptions of what the problems are.
Some useful system information to post would be . Motherboard, 2. CPU, 3. Video Card, 4. Sound Card, 5. Operating System, 6. Sound Driver and version, 7. Power Supply.
.. and then whether you have problems with Snap-Crackle-Pop (SCP), High-Pitched Squealing (HPS), BSODs, or other errors.
For example, here's my information:
. ASUS P5N-E SLI
2. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
3. ATI X800XT
4. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
5. Windows XP Pro SP2
6. Creative drivers, 5.2.4.96 (SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_006)
7. Cooler Master iGreen Power 600W
I experience HPS and BSODs. Typical times for the sound test to fail for me are between 5 seconds and 2 minutes.
Some information is better than none. It's not necessary to give complete system information if you don't know it all. But the most important information would be what motherboard you have, what sound card you have, what problems you experience (if any) and whether or not the test results in instability for you.
IMPORTANT: It's important to note that you are running this test AT YOUR OWN RISK, and while the files included don't inherently cause harm, it is possible for data corruption to occur if your system is affected by this issue.
These key files are needed in order to perform the test: a MIDI and a high-definition audio file (in this case, a high-definition (24-bit/48kHz) WAVE of near-silence). These are included in the zip file I have linked to below. According to CreativeSkeptic, MIDI playback makes high utilization of the PCI bus, so this may be why the problem is caused so easily this way.
I would be interested in hearing your results if you have experienced the high-pitched squealing in games or even if you haven't.
You can hear an example of what may happen if you experience instability [url="http://www.supload.com/listen?s=Sxfea3MfL">here[/url].
Sound Blaster Test.zip at Wikiupload.com
Or.. Sound_blaster_test.Zip by Bigupload.Com
(Note: The zip file is around 50KB in size, but it expands to over 42MB. This is due to the high-definition nature of the 5-minute wave file necessary to induce this problem in affected systems.)
This test will measure the stability of your Sound Blaster in your
particular system configuration. It is tested with Windows XP and
Windows Media Player , though these *may* not be essential for the
functioning of the test.
WARNING:
CLOSE ALL RUNNING PROGRAMS TO AVOID DATA LOSS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Instructions:
. Open silence.wav in Windows Media Player. To do so, you can drag it
onto the Windows Media Player shortcut in this folder.
2. Then, open the Play Midi shortcut.
Note:
This test will ONLY work if your system is using standard or full
hardware sound acceleration. In addition, your system must be using
your Sound Blaster as its MIDI interface directly. Software synthesizers
will not trigger the problem.
You can tell if your system has become unstable based on the
corrupted nature of the instruments played by the MIDI. It will
begin to sound odd and unnatural, with random notes inserted
here and there. It will be clear to you that this has happened.
For me, it doesn't take more than a few minutes before the instability
appears.
If this is the case, it is recommended that you do one of two things:
- Press the RESET button on your computer.
- Pull the power plug, if you have no reset button.
This is to avoid data loss associated with a blue screen of death
that would normally occur if you did not take these measures to
prevent it.
If you do experience these stability issues, you are at risk of BSOD's
when gaming or other playback problems. Please report this in the forum.

My X-Fi XtremeGamer passes this "test". No BSODs, etc. But I've discovered my computer has problems beyond sound card issues (I didn't even notice them until recently).
In other words, I've seen firsthand (whether this is true for the majority or not) that my issues with the Audigy 2 ZS don't translate exactly over to the X-Fi XtremeGamer, so if you have an X-Fi don't expect problems with this test, but by all means try if you want to see for sure.
(One problem remains from the Audigy 2 ZS, however: randomly skipping ahead in videos or certain audio streams. It doesn't happen with onboard audio, but my tendency is still to call this a system problem unrelated to the sound card because it doesn't happen on my old PC.)
(Oh, and I know I'm replying to my own post, so don't think I'm nuts. I just thought it would be appropriate to report my experience with my new card in another post.)Message Edited by sireebob on 03-27-20072:24 PM

For the time being I create the projects first in GB 6.0.5, to have more patches for vocal tracks and my guitar, and then I finish it in GB 10.0 to add Arpeggiators and Smart drummers.
It is simply easier to find anything in GB 10.0, if I know what is supposed to be there, because I created it in GB 6.0.5.

You must use Network Shared Variables, or raw TCP at this point. However, you should keep your eye out for LV 2013, as significant enhancements have been made to the exact use case you have referred to.

  • Are you using Blueprints search for Flex Code?

Blueprints (aka Code Search) is one of the options we provide with Community Search with Flex, in both the browser and the CHC. With Blueprints, your search results are restricted to code samples and a brief blurb.
You can access the Community Search through the Flash Builder help system.
We're curious to know how people are using Blueprints/Code Search, so can you please reply telling us:
    * Do you use Code Search in the CHC or the Browser?

  • Are there any speed tests for FCP 5.1 on a Intel Mac yet?

You know like something Macworld would post up. I thinking of getting either a G5 power Mac or the Mac Pro. But I want a stable system that runs FCP well.
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

At www.creativecow.com in the FCP forum a guy by the name of Peter Wiggins did a test between his 15" MacBook Pro and his Dual 2Ghz G5 and said that in many cases, the MBP was faster. Go over there and do a search for Peter Wiggins and Mac Book Pro and see if you can't find that.
Both systems are very stable with FCP. But if you are doing any serious professional work I would always recommend a tower over a laptop...unless you NEED to be mobile. The expandibility of additional firewire slots, connection to external RAIDED drive and addition of a capture card are all BIG plusses.

  • What are you folks using HTML5 for?

I am curious what you folks are doing with HTML5.
What do your clients want you to do with it?
Does Dreamweaver CS5 functionality suffice or do you have to complement it with handcoding or by using extensions?
I somehow have the impression that many HTML5 extensions are quite expensive.  I don't know if that really is the case.

Unfortunately the take-up of anything will always depend upon the user, the client and the designer/developer. The problem is similar to the use of css for layout vs's tables being used for layout, no matter what one does as long as the 'old' way of doing things is still supported, (and help is available when something goes wrong) then any arguments for doing it another way, (even if recommended and better) will always have its opponents.
I have no problem with the idea of using HTML5. Some parts of it are extremely useful, and should be adopted immediately. For example, the doctype is perfectly safe to use on any website, as are the new types of form input. The great advantage of using the date and number input types is that they're already supported by some browsers. Older browsers simply treat them as normal text input fields.
I'm less excited by the new semantic elements, because there's no support for them in any assistive technology. It's probably more effective to start using the WAI-ARIA role attributes first. I also think there's a lot of confusion about the way articles can be nested sections and vice-versa. I've done a lot of reading about this subject, and there seems to be little consensus about the most appropriate way of marking up documents. That's why I'm going to make haste slowly in that regard.
I have just finished reading Jeremy Keith's "HTML5 for Web Designers" published by A Book Apart. What struck me was the way he left the semantic elements to the end, and expressed similar doubts about their usage. Most other books and articles wax lyrical about how wonderfully semantic the web is going to be thanks to HTML5. I have my doubts. When I look at the daily procession of visitors to this forum who have no idea about paragraph tags, never mind divs or spans, I foresee websites constructed with a horrendous tag soup. That's not to say that the idea of semantic tags is bad. I'm just pessimistic about how they'll end up being used.
Now the normal argument. Users must see the same design across all browsers, well, how many normal users will look at a site on more than one browser? We may compare sites across browsers, but the average user, unless it is a comparison of the site on their pc with a site on a handheld/smartphone then probably never.
I think Andy Clarke has the right approach in his "Hardboiled Web Design". He sees the proliferation of mobile devices as the perfect opportunity to convince clients that it's impossible to make websites look exactly the same across all devices.
The really interesting developments at the moment are coming more from CSS3 than from HTML5.

  • Master password, who are you and who asks for it ?

Today I wonder about Master Password in my Firefox 15.0 - I have enable it since long long time.
When I visit bookmarked site with stored user name and password the site ask me about master password but there is no information about name site which ask for it in dialog box. Everything work fine with one opened site but if I opening many tabs? I don`t now who ask about for it. Can i configuring my Firefox browser to do it more talking about it?

Unfortunately you can't make the Master Password dialog show more information by configuring Firefox. I also couldn't find any extension for it. However, there is an extension that asks you for your master password at browser start so it's not that annoying during your browser session.

It is accessible on your iPhone by going in to Safari and clicking on the open book icon at the bottom of the screen. You will see the option for the iPhone User Guide. You can also access it on your computer via the www.apple.com/support website and either download it to your computer for offline use or open it and read it that way.

Well your Geekbench score looked pretty normal.
My best guess is that perhaps when using xslimmer to strip out architectures (which I really don't advise anyway) you might have knackered something without realising it.
Your hardware performance looks generally ok, so I would go for an OSX/Logic reinstall to rule that out. I reckon that very probably will fix it. Stop putting it off, bite the bullet and do it.
If it doesn't, I'd take it in to get looked...
(Also, wasn't sure if you'd checked this, but select the Logic Pro application in the finder and do a get info. Make sure the "Open using Rosetta" checkbox isn't ticked.)

  • AT-GPIB/TNT PnP and Sound Blaster 16 Clashing

    Hi Group
    The Story is:
I have had a AT-GPIB/TNT PnP on a old Pentium 75/Win 95 Machine doing some testing, and havn't had a problem with it.
I now wanted to install a Creative Sound Blaster (Vibra) 16, also PnP ISA, card for basic audio analysis measurements.
The problem is when the Sound Blaster card is installed the PnP BIOS doesn't recognise the GPIB card at all, even with PnP
    disabled.
    Has anybody seen this before?
Could it be that the PC can only handle 2 ISA PnP cards (there is also a PnP network card)?
Would I be better of with a PCI SB card.
    Any help would be gratefull
    Tim S

    Tim,
I had similar struggles with a 1995 vintage Pentium. My ISA GPIB conflicted with PCI sound card and PCI network card. It
tooks me hours to hit upon a sequence of installing the cards, and manually locking in the resources, in order to get them all
    working.
Some general suggestions: get back to a configuration that works, say without the sound card. Make note of the resources for
the network card and GPIB card. While your there, examine the other possibilities. You can select other GPIB resource
configurations and see what the I/O range, INT and DMA settings would be. For example, some GPIB resource configurations
don't use INT and DMA at all. Write all of this down.
Then install the sound card, without the GPIB. See what resources it wants, and explore what other configurations it might be
happy with. Sound cards are tricky, because they usually use a lot of resources because they have a lot of functions: wave,
midi, mixer, etc. Some also have "legacy drivers" that mimic the older DOS based sound cards, for backwards compatibility
with games. You may be able to install the sound card and then remove some of these "extra drivers."
With sound card working, and the network card working, reinstall the NI488 software. Then power down and install the GPIB
card. Reboot. You may get lucky and everything just works.
More likely, the GPIB will work and the sound card won't. Go check the GPIB card resources and you'll probably see that the
NI488 drivers snagged one or more of the INT or DMA channels that the sound card was using. Try a different GPIB
configuration, or manually edit the DMA and INT settings to NONE. Also check for I/O range conflicts. (Consult your written
list, because the conflicts won't show in Device Manger -- since the sound card's not working it's not using any resources!)
Hopefully, by telling Device Manager to NOT use Automatic Settings, you can get the GPIB working and still leave enough
resources available for the sound card. Which you will probably have to go back and reinstall, from scratch. Possibly a few
times before you get everything to fit.
How bad do you want that sound card ? :~)
Isn't (Microsoft) plug and play wonderful?
p.s. you might also consider using CMOS setup to disable any motherboard resources you are not using, for example a COM port
that's not connected to anything. Remember to write down EVERYTHING, you do so you can put it back if you have to.
    Good luck!
    Best Regards,
