Sound Booth vs Audition revisted

As tired and untimely as another Sound Booth vs Audition thread might be, I wanted to get the opinion of long time users on Sound Booth now that it has been in service a good while.
I find Sound Booth to be very slow in processing files. Much slower than Audition or Sound Forge.
Also I think that SB lacks finite controls in its audio filters.
I've tried using SB when working on a CS3 system but usually end up frustrated then use Sound Forge or Audition.
One benefit of Sound Booth's integration is it has taught me to rely more on Premiere Audio filters, experimenting and mastering them to a greater degree.
If anyone cares to comment on how they have employed Sound Booth, how they grade the overall processing speed, and the overall SB interface I would be interested in reading.

* I've posted in the premiere forum to reach long time adobe suite users with both Sound Booth and Audition experience.

I more or less agree with Harm...I remember when we all initially found out about Soundbooth replacing Audition in the suite, we were cautioned to make judgement only after giving Soundbooth a try. We were told about all these fantastic simple little options, speed, and functionality like the scores and such.
Well, none of it was true, and of course, the Adobe Resource Central has been nothing short of disappointing as well. It seems to be down an awful lot, and there's just not any worthwhile material there compared to what Audition previously offered on the installation disc.
In other words....it absolutely feels like Adobe became the ones who abandoned it without giving it much of a try. I tried Soundbooth, and found it severely lacking in the fine-tuning functions that I used on absolutely every production. If I were just producing web A/V only, and I wanted quick 'n dirty audio, it might work. But even my web projects demand a sort of finessing that Soundbooth cannot provide.

  • Why does the waveform disappear after editing in Sound Booth?

It happens consistently with CS4 on 2 different computers. I right-click the audio track and select Edit in Adobe Sound Booth, and SB opens the audio for editing. I edit the audio, and it updates the audio. I know it does, because when I play back the edited section, it's correct. But the waveform is gone! I tried playing around with the display style -- disable and enable waveform, keyframes, etc. -- but the audio track doesn't display anything. I have to exit out of Premiere and re-start it to see the waveform again.
    Anyone else experience this?
Also: when editing the audio in SB, is there a way to substitute the PP audio track with a multi-track? I know I can export a multitrack as an .aiff and import it into PP, but I was wondering if there's a way to link it.

Thanks for responding, but the thread you mentioned seems to be about a mirror-image problem: waveform not appearing in Sound Booth. In my case, SB is working fine and displaying the waveform properly, which is why I posted my question in this forum, instead.
The problem I'm having is the waveform not appearing in PPro. This doesn't seem to be a case of "it isn't a bug, it's a feature", because exiting and restarting PPro makes the waveform reappear. So it looks like it is a bug. Unless I'm doing something wrong or have a conflict somwhere.
BTW, I used to use Audition, but it had too many hardware issues and wouldn't run under 64-bit Windows. Have you tried it under Vista x64, or with dynamic links to PPro or After Effects? It seems that PPro, AE and Flash have been designed to work with SB rather than Audition.

  • How Do I set the "Record" settings in Sound booth.

How Do I set the "Record" bit settings in Sound Booth, i.e. the 16 bit rate so that the wav files will burn to a music CD. (the default 48 will dot burn to a CD).
    Thanks Marv.

Why not post in the SB forum?

  • Cross fade in Sound Booth?

I am I missing something or can you not do a cross-fade in Sound Booth? I can seem to find it anywhere.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Tim

Hello Tim:  This Ole Fart doesn't even know what Cross Fade is; However I am hoping it might be the same as what I am trying to do.  Please, if you or anyone can educate me I would appreciate it.  What I am trying to do is do a fade in / fade out on the same input / output music tracks leading into a voice announcement.  Is this the same thing?
Bear in mind I have passed 3 score & 10 and am trying to learn to do production work for a community radio station.  Fun and Frustrating all at the same time.

    Soundbooth

    Hello,
I see 2 post in this thread from Todd that say they are working on a fix and it should be out soon.  One is from July, the other from August.  It is now Sept 7th and I still see no patches or fixes for any bugs.  I spent 400 dollars on an upgrade, but is this upgrade going to be supported?
This is making me rethink upgrading to the .5's in the future.
It is a minor bug to most, but in that sense it should be an easy quick fix. Am I wrong? Is this really a complicated issue?
I apologize if this comes off like a rant, but thats kinda what it is.  It is not hard to batch rename files, but its a pain to have to relink all those files in PP.

  • Project file size bloat when editing sound media in Audition

Whenever I clean up a voice-over clip in using Audition, the size of the clip in Captivate remains about the same, but the project file size increases by about the amount of the original clip.
For example, the size of the original sound clip is 1098.90. The size of the edited clip is 1103.98. The size of the original project file is 5416, but the size of the saved file with the edited clip is 6496.  I'm using Captivate 7 and the latest version of Audition CC. I've cleared my cache and removed any unused media.
All I am doing to the clip is some noise reduction and EQ tweaking.
It seems like Captivate is saving both versions of the sound clip.
    UPDATE:
I've also tried saving the sound file as a .wav from Audition into a folder and then updating the sound clip in Captivate. Same bloat problem.
I have also copied the slides into a blank project. Again, same file size problem.
    Any ideas?

  • Sound Card for Audition

What is the sound card for CS5.5?  Where can I find? How$?

Try clicking the link I supplied in my first reply. This should take you to the main forums page. From there you need to find the Audition forums.
Question though. You said you thought this was the Audition forums? Can you tell more about how you came to that conclusion? How did you find this forum and end up posting here?
Note that we aren't upset that you posted in the wrong place. It's just that we would prefer you get the best and quickest help you can and by having to be redirected your help is delayed. So if we know more about how you ended up here, perhaps we might take steps to help folks end up where they need to be.

  • Exported file sounds different inside Audition CS6 - audio channel mapping problem?

Hi guys. I've been working on some voice reels today, and for some reason my finished and exported files sound different to how they sound in Audition - basically, the music tracks increase in volume whenever the voice actor isn't speaking. As mentioned, this isn't happening in the Multitrack session, just when playing back the exported track in a third-party app, and has only been happening today. I've tried messing around with the Audio Channel Mapping and Audio Hardware settings in the Preferences, without any joy. I'm suspecting something's got messed up on the sound card, but just wanted to check that I haven't missed something painfully obvious inside of Audition!
    Specs:
    Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X64 2.8 GHz, 8GB RAM
Adobe Creative Suite 6 Production Premium
    M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX650Ti 2GB

Can't answer that without quite a bit more information about the third-party apps, what exactly you're exporting, workflow, etc. It won't be a mapping issue though - that will only affect the output of Audition to a hardware device.
But if you are exporting a single file with everything on, and it plays okay in Windows Media Player, for instance, then whatever is happening isn't with Audition, but whatever you are putting it back into. It sounds as though some sort of auto-leveling system is at work - and Audition wouldn't do that unless set up very specifically to do so.

  • Sound Booth Crashes, Damaging Source File!!!!

I spent multiple hours editing a sound file, diligently saving periodically only to have SB crash near the end & ask if I want to save my work before it must shut down. Foolishly, I said yes. It then went into a fatal loop, causing me to resort the the three-finger salute & restart. When I called up the file again it was EMPTY! I now have a 25 MB sound file I cannot use.
Honestly, I'm ready to go back to Audacity: not a lot of bells & whistles but it does a bangup job. The cost to functionality ratio on Audacity is also WAAAAY lower!
    --Allen

Let me see if I can clear this up one item at a time for you:
    1. You CLEARLY stated: "I spent multiple hours editing a sound file, diligently saving periodically".
When you do that, Soundbooth saves an individual copy of EACH save in the Media Cache folder (Library\Application Support\Adobe\Common on OS X, AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common on Windows). It does this to preserve an "undo" ability for the file. Once Soundbooth saves these files, they are there until you delete them, with one exception. I know because I learned the hard way when I suddenly found myself down to 75Mb of available hard drive space the first week I ever used Soundbooth on my laptop. They are WAV files and they are HUUUUUUUUGE. Also, when you "save" the file, it doesn't save it to the cache folder. It saves it to the location you specify, and the file is "saved" at that point. You begin a new undo cache from the saved point. I've accidentally pulled the plug out of the wall after saving a "still open" file, and it was intact when I got everything back up.
    2. You stated CLEARLY "only to have SB crash near the end & ask if I want to save my work before it must shut down."
Obviously you've never seen SB crash. As a beta tester for CS3, I did. When it "crashes", you won't be asked a thing. One second you will be working on a file, and the next, you're staring at your desktop wondering what the hell just happened. Also, when it crashes, and I mean truly crashes, is the only time it will dump the Cache files for what you were working on. When you reopen the file (and I've seen it in VIsta and OS X) it repoens exactly as it did before you ever started doing anything with it. In other words intact as it was prior to any editing.
    3. You CLEARLY stated: "It then went into a fatal loop, causing me to resort the the three-finger salute & restart."
Here's the clincher. ANY TIME you have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL, (read that again: ANY TIME) to get out of something you're doing, your problems are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY deeper than the software you're using at the moment. Especially if the end result is a hard reboot. That's a good sign that "Microsoft's finest" isn't working properly anymore.
    4. You CLEARLY stated, "When I called up the file again it was EMPTY! I now have a 25 MB sound file I cannot use."
As I stated above, if you were diligently saving it, you'd have multiple copies in WAV format in the cache folder (in the location I mentioned). If Windows (not Soundbooth) is dumping these when you have to CTRL+ALT+DEL, it indicates a very unstable OS at the time of the restart and Windows (not Soundbooth) tosses the cached files into the crash memory dump cache and deletes them on reboot. The original file is being dumped as part of that "protection" feature of Windows (not Soundbooth). I'll reiterate, I've accidentally pulled the plug out of the wall after saving a "still open" file, and it was intact when I got everything back up.
Note: For this part you will need your OS disc.
Hit Start, then Run. Type "sfc /scannow" (minus the quotes) and run the Windows System FIle Checker to scan your OS for corrupted and/or missing files. If they cannot be repaired from the default install files, it will ask for your OS disc. If you don't have the OS disc and you try this, it will F*** your OS up and you will have to reformat and reinstall Windows (which will be pretty tough if you don't have an OS disc, right?). Once the SFC scan is finished, reboot and try Soundbooth again. I'd be willing to bet it works a lot better, and you won't need to "three finger salute" your PC nearly as often with SB or other apps that "crash".

  • I work in the sound booth in my schools auditorium for plays. Ive seen people use the iPad to control the lights and sounds wirelessly, but i dont know how to do it myself. Help?

Is it possible to control the lights and sounds/do sound ir light checks from backstage via my iPad? Ive seen it done, but dont know how to do it. Is it just an apo?

It would have to be an app, but it would be hard here to guess which one. They may be using a remote control app (such as Splashtop Remote Desktop) to control another computer that is controlling the lights and sounds, or they may have a dedicated app that goes right into their system. You'd have to ask them - or do a search in the App Store, or perhaps do a search for "iPad Theater technical system" or something like that.

  • Audition 3.0 won't recognise any audio at all - viz: no waveform displayed, although sound is working

I've just upgraded my PC to Windows 8.1 and installed Audition 3.0
Everything else on the PC - sound-wise - is working perfectly (Premiere, Media stuff etc) but whenever I insert a CD OR play a YouTube song and try to record via Audition, NOTHING!
I'm tearing my hair out trying to get it to link to the on-board sound on the motherboard, but it won't

Sorry for long delay in replying but I've been ill
We did as you describe, and more, without success
We've now bought an ASUS DGX 5.1 PCIE sound card to by-pass the on-board
    sound
Installed it; Audition recognises that it's there BUT still it won't
connect with ANY music we play (CD, YouTube etc) to make a recording
In fact, at one stage, we were playing a track on YouTube, with Audition
open, and as soon as we clicked on record, it muted the sound in the
    speakers!!

  • Normalize sound Premiere Pro CS 4

    Hi.
I have a lot of clips in my sequence, where the audio is too low or too high, how I normalize them at one step.?

I'm not a heavy Sound Booth user because I come from a pro audio background and tend to lean on those tools. That said, when I need to process audio for an entire track, typically what I do is export as audio only, bring it up in my audio app (Sound Booth would probably work just fine), clean it up, save it out, and then import the edited audio track back in.
By the way, when you're normalizing, you might first want to do a pass with a limiter to chop off the highest peaks. Since normalizing only scoots up stuff by the distance of the very highest peak to 0db (or whatever ceiling you set), one stray spike in volume can prevent the rest of the audio from being boosted.
If you look at your wave form, you'll doubtless see that most of the energy resides within a particular range, and then you have some thin spikes here and there. Let's say that the bulk of the energy resides from -6db down. If you run the limiter to make a 6db reduction, it snips off the errant peaks. Then, when you normalize, you'll get the 6db boost across the board.
Going too far in this direction with a limiter will start to give you some distortion, so it's best to experiment a couple of times on a copy until you've got the hang of it. The end result will be more consistent audio across the board as well as enhanced levels for you to work with once you're back in PPro.
If you have it, Adobe Audition is a great tool for this kind of work. If not, I'm reasonably sure you can accomplish it with Sound Booth.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris
