Sound comparison with Bose

I just listened to the HiFi at the Apple store in Long Island. I brought my own iPod to listen to the music I already know (how to listen to). The HiFi was next to SoundDock, for easy comparison. (I'm neither a Bose fan, nor am I one of those who looks down the nose at Bose.)
The first thing to notice was the difference in size; the SoundDock is considerably smaller (though not necessarily better looking). I probably prefer the look of the Apple product -- cleaner, over all.
Then came the performance comparison. Overall, I was surprised to find that the Bose sounded better. I listened to cello suites, classical guitar pieces, and female voice, both jazz and pop (is Sarah McLachlan pop?) The SoundDock had considerably better requency separation; the cello was cleaner and crisper. On the HiFi, it was muddied. It also sounded like the intruments were in a hallway, whereas on the SoundDock it sounded like I was in a more intimate setting. I found similar effects listening to a couple different jazz pieces -- Winton Marsalis for trumpet and Joe Henderson for sax.
McLachlan's voice sounded pretty good on the HiFi, though perhaps not quite so clear as it did on the Bose; the real difference on that tune was the instrumentals. On the HiFi, I could barely make out the guitars and other instruments whereas they were prominent (though appropriately so) on the Bose.
The HiFi did a fine job on other, more aggressive sounding pop/rock tunes; it displayed serious volume and substantial base. In addition, the separation of the tweeters allowed for genuine stereo separation -- not plausible on the Bose.
Perhaps the midrange/base is being asked to represent too wide a frequency band on the HiFi. Perhaps it needs a crossover tweaking. I don't know. But if you listen to classical or jazz or voice, and value frequency separation and clarity at the upper frequency ranges, Apple's HiFi will perhaps suffice, but it certainly doesn't match the Bose, and at $50 more, it is, in my opinion, not a very good value.
SOS

I appreciate the comments compared to Bose. I actually ordered the Hi-Fi online and just received the unit and tested. Not being an expert audiophile, i did appreciate the robust feel of the unit with the sound feeling just as solid. It is well built and complies with Apple's philosophy of simplicity.
I am extremely disappointed with a couple of issues:
1. The remote control is just to basic. Does not allow you to access your menu on the iPod even though the remote control does have a menu button. After reading the manual, i discovered that the menu button only toggles between inputs from different devices. For eg., if you had the Hi-Fi connected to Airport Express and an iPod on the dock, the menu button (on remote) only allows you to toggle between the two. You would think that an Apple designed and built product would give you full functionality of the iPod's menu through the remote. Sad this is not the case.
2. For those of you who own the iPod Video, there is no Video Out capability. Again, i can't understand the logic behind this.
Overall, i would give Apple's first attempt a 3.5 star rating out of 5. They can do better than this!

  • Problem with bose sound dock 2 series and iOS 5.1.1

Hi everyone i just bought a bose sound dock 2 series,is made for iphone 4 and 4s but with ios 5.1.1. but doesnt work..how could be possible?Dock is ok but i cant hear the music from my iphone 4!!I spent 400 euro!!!
    Please help me!!!
    Thanks in advance

From what I have read on this discussion boards so far, it sounds as though Bose was using the 12v firewire charging circuit on there Sound Dock and not the recommended 5v charging circuit that Apple told all of its licensed accessory manufactures to start using, when Apple changed the syncing of iPods from firewire to USB2, a few years ago.
The firmware update has now enforced charging via the 5v circuit and those manufactures that ignored Apple specifications, are now faced with end users, asking those manufactures for a fix, (not Apple.) This has been a well known road map between the accessory manufactures and Apple, for at least 3 to 4 years now.
Here's the funny part, even apples own HiFi system breaks there own rules and doesn't charge, you would think they would follow there own guidelines, wouldn't you?

  • HT1665 Bose sound dock with the new Lightning connection of an iPhone5?

There are many accessories for use with the original 30pin connector, how are we to use these still great and useful items like sound dock with the new lightning connector?

Use the Lightning to 30-pin Adapter - this will make your iPhone or iPod very wobbly on the SoundDock.  To correct this and prevent damage to the 30-pin connector, make a upper support for your device from a white polymer eraser. Cut it in an 'L' shape as shown in the photo, the dimensions depending on whether you do or don't dock with a case.  You'll find your device is even more stable than when you used the 30 pin adapter.  One eraser will make 3-4 of these supports, depending on the dimensions you choose.

    Hi bbattaglia,
Does your Bose SoundLink 2 pair using Bluetooth? Have you tried pairing it? If so, what happens when you pair it?
    Thanks.

I would like to play music from my iphone 5s on a sound bar with an iphone 3 dock. Is there an adapter available that will play audio please?

The genuine Apple adapter works for me, most cheap knockoffs do not support sound ,it is usually in the micro print at bottom of the ebay offerring
It is pricey by comparison but it works and the knock offs usually don't pay the patent  licence fee hence they guess the technology that is in the lightning plug
    and charge a minimal price

  • Using the iphone with Bose headphones

I had trouble using the phone function on my iPhone with Bose over-the-ear sound cancelling headphones, connecting the two with a Bose connector with a mouthpiece (http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shoponline/headphones/noise_cancelling_headphones/accessories/qc2_commkitacc.jsp)
When the phone is on and sending a signal the headphones generate an irritating buzz which isn't audible to the person that you're talking to, but is to you. It seems to be caused by the electromagnetic field created by the phone, i.e. changing the position of the phone makes the buzzing disappear or get louder and the closer you bring the phone to the headset the louder the buzz.
Two things seem to make a difference, the orientation of the phone, move it around until the buzzing decreases, and the second is to fold a small loop (diameter 1 - 2") in the wire 5 or 6"s below the mouthpiece. This seems to cancel out the sound and with the right orientation of the phone eliminates the buzzing entirely. It seems to work best when the loop in the wire is directly in the path between the phone and the headphones. Fight interference with interference!
    Anyone got any other suggestions?

Yes, same person. I talked with Bose technical support and they told me the phone won't answer in sleep mode.  I guess I got the wrong person if there isn't a sleep mode. So I push the answer button on the headset when the phone rings.  The phone gets answered but the call doesn't come to the headphone.  Got any idea's?  Thanks

  • Need help with Bose companion 2 hook-up

I can't get sound from my Bose companion 2 speakers - only static noise if turned up. Any suggestions?  Could the jack on the computer be fried?  I thought we blew out our last speakers, but wonder if it is the input.

Dunno. Maybe it's the control pod. Is there power going to the speakers? what's the sound output set to. Try Audio MIDI, maybe something got stuck in there. It might be the speakers' input cable. Hopefully that's replaceable. you could try cleaning the plug with a little isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) and letting 'er dry, then trying it.  Then again, it might be the jack. do you have some headphones to try out?

  • No TV sound - Problem with Pulseaudio and Gnome

    Hi Community!
Since January 2013 I got big problems with the sound of my tvcard. The card is a Sundtek Media TV Pro. But after all the problems have nothing to to with the card itself!
So far I found out, that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
    - Sound works under Windows on same PC.
    - Sound don't work under Arch - not with tvtime, not with vlc, etc.
    - Problem occurs even on a new installed system with the Arch-2013-02-01 install medium.
    cat /etc/mediasrv.log
[1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
[1033] select error() in audio processor (can be caused because of pulseaudio) (Interrupted system call)
After setting up a new Arch installation with just xorg-server, gnome, tvtime and the sundtek driver from AUR I run journalctl -b:
    Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower pulseaudio[636]: [pulseaudio] pid.c:
    Daemon already running.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 16:2' I get the following output:
Feb 10 16:25:01 hightower rtkit-daemon[489]: Successfully made thread 488 of process 488 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.

Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower rtkit-daemon[489]: Successfully made thread 636 of process 636 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '1000' high priority at nice level -11.
Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower pulseaudio[636]: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.

Feb 10 16:28:55 hightower pulseaudio[1000]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Module load failed.
Feb 10 16:28:55 hightower pulseaudio[1000]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Konnte Daemon nicht initialisieren.
Feb 10 16:28:55 hightower pulseaudio[997]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Start des Daemons fehlgeschlagen.
So, if I understand right, pulseaudio is alreade started by the rtkit-daemon and gnome couldn't start it again.
    At https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30926 I found a hint concerning /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop and /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop.
After removing them from /etc/xdg/autostart and running journalctl -b there are no more errors.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'pulseaudio' I get:
sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 17:4' | grep 'pulse*'
Feb 10 17:41:42 hightower rtkit-daemon[485]: Successfully made thread 484 of process 484 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.
Feb 10 17:41:55 hightower rtkit-daemon[485]: Successfully made thread 625 of process 625 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '1000' high priority at nice level -11.
In my opinion all looks ok! I also checked the channels with the alsamixer and it looks good, too.
So I ran vlc v4l2://:dev=/dev/video0:width=720:height=576:tuner-frequency=510750:adev=/dev/null:standard=255 - but still no sound.
With cat /var/log/mediasrv.log I checked the drivers logfile:

    2013-02-10 17:48:59 [1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
I started tvtime again. This time I ran rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ and killall pulseaudio to kill the Pulseaudio server. I instantly got a loud noise out of my speakers.
I closed tvtime and re-opened it. And there it was: TV SOUND OUT OF MY SPEAKERS!
But now, when I run pavucontrol I get:
Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
In this cas this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 root Windows Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Windows.
If this is the case, then PuseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you sould run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.
I got the information from Sundtek, that Pulseaudio should not be started as system service. Instead, every user should have an own Pulseaudio daemon and that PA was concepted this way. But they don't know how it is implemented in ArchLinux.
I also don't know it exactly. So the question to all you ArchLinu pro's:
How is PA implemented in Arch? And how can I sustainable solve my problem?
Thank you for your time and help!
    Durag

There is just one more thing I found out.
After logging into Gnome and running ps aux | grep pulse I get:
    rebel 727 0.7 0.2 444316 10288 ? S<l 03:02 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
    rebel 731 0.0 0.0 71236 2652 ? S 03:02 0:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper
    rebel 843 0.0 0.0 17396 1184 pts/0 D+ 03:03 0:00 grep pulse
To get the sound to work I run:
    rm -rf .config/pulse/
    killall pulseaudio
    killall -9 pulseaudio
I again run ps aux | grep pulse
    rebel 4016 4.2 0.2 510124 11528 ? Sl 03:06 0:02 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
    rebel 4020 0.0 0.0 71368 2700 ? S 03:06 0:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper
    rebel 4046 0.0 0.0 19456 1216 pts/0 R+ 03:07 0:00 grep pulse
I can recognize that the STATs have changed. Maybe this can help to solve the problem?

My iPod Touch is not working with Bose DoundDock Series II.  Can anyone suggest how I can get these 2 to work together?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery for $79 Y can do the exchange at an APple store or sent it in.. They do not fix yours.
