Sound control is greyed out on external output since updating to Mavericks

I have recently updated my macbook pro to Mavericks and the sound control is now greyed out / disabled when I connect the output to my LG television to use as an external speaker (and monitor from the simultaneous display output). Everything is works fine with the internal speakers and if I hook up headphones instead of my television or external speakers. On external speakers, only the external device allows to control the volume. This is very irritating as I need to have my television remote controller handy every time I was to tweak the volume now. Any idea how to fix that? Please don't tell me it's a new "feature" that comes with Mavericks!

Had the same problem. It was the built in switch that switches sound from built speakers to headphones, muting the built in speakers when the jack is inserted. The switch is internal and built in the headphone socket. I sprayed WD 40 and it now works again fine
I hope it helps

  • No Sound; All options greyed out

Output options for sound are greyed in Preferences and the desktop sound icon. In the Audio MIDI Setup window, the default output says Built-in Output and the System Output also says Built-in Output. No other options available for either.
Just below halfway down there is Audio Input, which has a bunch of info on the left, but on the right where it says Audio Output, there is just a greyed out message that says Output is Not Supported.
I also tried the option/apple/p/r, got the three chimes, but sound is still greyed out.
Any gurus out there who can tell me what simple thing I did to cause this, or is it a hardware/sofware bug?

it doesn't matter if you've used the ports or not.. there is a sensor inside the audio ports that will automatically switch your audio in and/or out into digital mode if it trips and then 'thinks' there's a digital cable connected. basically, if you open your sound control panel and display the output pane and it says 'digital out', and the volume control (and everything else) is greyed out, and it says something about this device not having volume control... then this is exactly the situation where the port sensor has clicked on to digital and is staying there. unfortunately, the sensor seems to be quite fragile and there are plenty of users that are suddenly wondering why they have no sound, and why the sound ouput only says digital and the options are greyed out. it would be at least a comfort to be able to say that this only can happen if you've been plugging things into the port (such as headphones), but I've heard of this happening to people regardless.
anyway, look for the signs I mentioned: the digital output option being the only available choice in the sound control panel, with options greyed out. and also a red light coming out of the port. if this is happening to you, then you need to get the machine fixed cos that sensor is jammed.

  • Sound icon is greyed out at start up (though sound can be heard); only workaround found so far: plugging in/out earphone, then sound icon is reactivated

    Hi,
On my new MacBook Pro / Lion, Sound icon is greyed out at start up, as well as the output volume in System Preferences (though sound can be heard, you just can't change the volume); only workaround found so far: plugging in/out earphone, then sound icon is reactivated.
Do you have any idea? Concurrent access to sound output from another software? (Skype, Growl...?)
PS: in Windows 7 / bootcamp, volume settings work perfectly from start up
    Many thanks,
    Fred

Hi macwzrd, I followed your procedure and... IT WORKS!! I rebooted several times now, and I still have a true black sound icon in the menu bar. So the issue seems to be fixed, thanks!
BUT now, _coreaudiod process is taking *much* of my cpu resources (136 coreaudiod _coreaudiod 114,7 5 3,4 MB Intel (64 bit)) and the fan keeps turning on and on like mad...
Any ideas on how to stop this strange behaviour?

  • My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management

I have recently purchased a Mac computer (updated to Maverick) to go with my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 printer which has given excellent service with my old Windows computer. However, when trying to print pictures or photos via Photoshop Elements 11, the best results I can get are using the Colour Management and Epson Colour controls in the printing options box.
My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management, The only way I can reset the controls is to shut down the printer and computer and restart.
Could there may be a setting somewhere that I need to adjust please?  I have been in touch with Epson and they say that the Epson Colour controls are part of the Photoshop Elements software but a post on the Adobe forum brought no results and I am unable to contact Adobe.

Hello Garry. Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have used a different title from "How do I post a question?" That should come after trying to resolved the colour settings first. However, to answer your question, after experimenting with all the different settings in Photoshop Elements and Epson software, I now start with PSE11 Colour settings then click "no colour management" then after clicking Print, I choose "More Options/Colour Management/Colour Handling/Printer Manages Colour" then I choose "Page Setup/Layout/Colour Matching" which then shows Epson Colour Controls but I also choose "Layout/Colour Management" which then shows "Colour Controls/Mode" I then of course choose an Epson printer profile depending on the paper I am using. I get good results but as I said, the Colour Matching and Colour Controls are then greyed out. Hope that makes sense.

  • Increment and decrement buttons on a ring control are greyed out

    Hello,
The check box for showing the increment and decrement buttons on a ring control are greyed out. Does anyone know why? I have verified that the ring is a control as opposed to a indicator.

"the controls are greyed out because they do not exist on the Menu ring control."
Errr... yes, I believe that's exactly what I said in my last response.
"This is different from what I saw in another part of this forum about using event structures on a Menu ring."
Don't know what you could be referring to, as there is no event specific to the increment/decrement controls. All that they would do (if they existed) is to change the value of the control, and the applicable event would be the "Value changed" event. Where exactly did you read this?

  • Can't seem to change the Document Properties Advanced Reading Options in a Form that was created in Adobe LiveCycle. This option has been "greyed" out - anyone know how to update this to English so I can pass Accessibility Testing?

Can't seem to change the Document Properties > Advanced > Reading Options in a Form that was created in Adobe LiveCycle. This option has been "greyed" out - anyone know how to update this to English so I can pass Accessibility Testing?

LiveCycle forms use a very different approach to create a PDF form than Acrobat and that approach makes many features for processing PDFs non-functional.
You might want to ask this question in one of the LiveCycle product forums.

That is really the only app that doesn't want to disappear after installation. Any thoughts or ideas out there in the world wide web?

  • Unreliable sound - speaker symbol greyed out and red light in 3.5mm jack

Had my MacBook for 3 years with no problems. But over the past few months, the sound has been very unreliable. It always works when external speakers are plugged in, but when using the internal speakers it's very temperamental. It will just suddenly grey out the speaker symbol on the menu bar at the top, and a red light is visible in the 3.5mm jack socket.
    Any ideas???

Your Mac believes that a digital audio cable is plugged in. You can use a toothpick or unbent paper clip to toggle the DA switch off. It's located along the side of the port, not at the back whence the light emanates.

  • Fingerprint reader not working at log on - "Start Control Centre" greyed out

    Hi
I've been using a T61p last week. Overall, I'm very impressed with the laptop.
Initially when booting, I had the option to either enter my password or swipe fingerprints. Everything worked fine.
The fingerprint option at log on has now disappeared.
To try to fix this, I've started the thinkvantage fingerprint control centre, but on the general tab, the option to "Start Control Centre on Windows Start Up" is greyed out.
I am an administrator on the machine.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

    Hello,
Have you tried downloading the latest version of the fingerprint software, uninstalling the current version and installing the freshly-download one?
