Sound distortion at moderate to high volumes?

When I play any sound through the laptop's internal speakers it starts to echo/reverb at moderate to high volumes. How do I stop it?
The IDT High defnition audio CODEC is currently enabled with driver version 6.10.6319.0.
System effects are currenlty disabled.
The laptop is an HP Pavilion g6 Notebook .

Hi Jay... you're clearly the guru here since I see you do
most of the posts.
Actually it's just a video player - so no mic. and the sound
is more like a scratching & poping. It also doesn't happen the
first time the page with my player is displayed... only if I
refresh the page several times when connected to my local FMS.
However I tried to reproduce this on my web site with
Influxis FMS... and it doesn't seem to happen.
So, I've decided to not worry about this anymore - and assume
it's just some strange artifact with my local setup.
However I do thank you for your reply.
Cheers :)

  • Should I schedule a repair because my iPad's speakers sound a little scratchy at high volume levels when it's a high note or something like that, is this regular?

Should I schedule repair or is it normal?

You have my sympathy for your dilemma as far as aesthetics go. My previous iMac was the 17" core 2 duo and, like you, I think it had a nicer, more artistic look about it and it fit in well with the decor of my office. Even though they are basically the same in overall design, the newer aluminum models do seem to have a somewhat jarring industrial appearance. Nevertheless, I wouldn't spend that amount of money to repair an old machine just because I thought it looked better than the new models. I'm happy that I replaced my old white iMac but then I wanted the larger, brighter screen as well as the faster processor and better graphics card and all that other guy stuff . And now with the even newer and better iMacs out there it makes much more sense to go for one of those rather than to repair and keep your old one. More ram can be added very cheaply now and you can add a lot more to the new models than you have on the old machine. I'm not sure whether or not your old speakers would work with one of the new machines but a new set isn't really all that expensive and they might even be better. And actually, even though I noted earlier that the aluminum models have that industrial look (to me at least), those glass screens are great for graphic work. Much better than the old ones.
    Good luck

  • Sound distorted at medium-high vol

When playing music, I have to keep the main volume slider under about 25% or the sound gets very distorted. This is fine most of the time, but if in order to listen to music semi-loud I have to turn my speaker all the way up. Is there anything I can do to be able to go about about 25% on the volume control without distortion? I have a sound blaster li've 24-bit, on a dimension 500 with a clean install of windows xp. Thanks

I highly doubt the speakers are the source of your problem... I would blame either the sound card or the game. The game might have it's volume turned to max, and that might be distorting the signal. Or it could be with the card, with it being turned up. It could also be that you're hearing the infamous "snap crackle pop" which can sometimes sound like distortion. That's not really distortion at all, just the card being retarded. I'm not sure of any fix for that as of yet.
distortions happens when the signal exceeds the signal to noise ratio of what it's being sent through. If the signal has a dB range of 00 Db, and the sound card (for instance)has a signal to noise ratio of only 85 dB, then you'll get distortion. This means that the sound waves are literally being cut off at their peaks...so they somewhat resemble square waves. Distortion can occur at low volumes, too. For example, if you could indefinitely turn up your system volume, and kept your speaker volume very low, you would have distortion, but the sound still wouldn't be loud. You would be distorting the sound at the sound card, and that sound is then passed on to whatever device is next int he chain.
SO in short, find what's distorting, if something is indeed distorting.

  • Sound Distortion iMac 2007

I just noticed my iMac was distorting music, movies and even some system sounds are sounding "hollow" and have a sort of echo. I have successfully reproduced the distortion on a Logitec 2.1 sound system as well as the standard iMac speakers and headphones. The distortion happens at all sound levels of system and program volume. My extremely limited computer hardware experience tells me that my sound card might be bad, but I would hate to go and buy a replacement only to have the same problem after the thinning of my wallet. I am not sure how relevant a description of the sound might be, but for those of you who used to be Winamp users, it sounds like your music did when the preamp slider was turned up too high on the EQ bar.
Of course my AppleCare expired last month right before I noticed this problem. All I can think about is the term "planned obsolescence," and it is really making my blood boil.
Alternate hypotheses - I have had SRS iWOW as well as the program "Hear" installed but they never caused any trouble when I was using them but I had wondered if they might have corrupted some sort of system files dealing with the sound output. I have since uninstalled them both and restarted the computer but there has been no change in the sound.
Also, I am a noob to the forums here and I hope that I got the right forum to post this. My apologies if this should be somewhere else.

Have you done a SMC or PRAM reset? If not that's a good place to start, if you don't know how here are the directions:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
    Post back with what happens.

  • Sound Distortion/Crackling

    Pavilion Dv6-6146tx
    Windows 7 64-bit
Occasionally my sound will distort and have a slight crackling sound before a sound is played. This occasionally happens when opening applications but i have mainly noticed it when playing games. Sometimes the sound will drop out for a moment when this "crackling" or distortion is happening. This has been occurring ever since i bought the laptop. This happens with both the laptop speakers and headsets.
    Any help would be appreciated,

I just got the iPad 2 and noticed the speaker and headphone output is distorting on pretty much any volume level. It sounds like listening to a low bitrate encoding almost, where the highs get distorted and "scratchy" or "snowy" sounding. Hard to explain in words. The thing is I have tested this side by side with the first gen iPad and it's crystal clear at all volumes. It's like the amplifier or sound processor is sub par quality in the new iPad . I am hoping it's just mine and I can exchange it for another new working one. But I thought I would see if anyone else had this issue.
Again, the first gen iPad played the same tests back perfectly ( garage band, pandora, iTunes movies) but the iPad 2 had distortion on everything. Very noticeable in GarageBand when playing and holding high piano notes.
Also it happens with both the speaker and my high quality etymotic headphones.
I get "crackling" noise when playing some videos, at any volume.  It also seems to make crackling noise sometimes even when not playing anything.  Also, I get some distortion from the music if it has strong bass.
    I suspect the following:
1). iPad 2 may have poor quality hardware for audio. This is my guess, so don't quote me on it.
2). I see that you use Etymotic Research IEM (In-Ear Monitors). That's what I use. Keep in mind that these ear phones are extremely sensitive to high's, so any statics generated from the audio track will be "amplified" on the Etymotics. It will detect anything that's mid to high.
Bottom line?  I don't like cracking noise. It is bothersome.  But I think you returning the iPad2 would be a waste of time and effort. Try different pair of IEM, something that's designed for lows. And try other media source to see if you still get statics.  I have the similar problem with iPod Touch 4.

  • Sound Distortion & iPod Sensitivity.

I have a fifth generation iPod touch (64GB) that hasn't given me any trouble until today. I've installed all of the available iOS updates on it and I don't know of any existing issues with it that could cause it to act like this.
I was listening to music on it earlier today and I could hardly hear it due to static and the sound constantly being switched between earphones. I could only hear out of one of them at a time but the right one worked more often. There were moments where I could hear sound from both earphones without static as normal but it seemed to be dependent on the way I was holding the iPod itself.
The sound seemed to improve the higher and further away it was from me and when it was in a vertical position and worsened in any other position. I also felt that the touch screen was more sensitive than usual as it responded to the lightest of touches that normally wouldn't do anything. This sensitivity seemed to extend to the iPod itself as the volume seemed to be adjusting itself based on whether I was touching (not pressing) the volume buttons.
I know that the distortion of sound might be due to my earphones but I want to make sure that there aren't any issues with the iPod itself. I haven't heard of anything similar to this before.

First confirm the headphones are not the problem. Try yours in another device or try a known-working one in your iPod. If iPod is problem
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • 160 GB IPod Classic : Sound Distortion?

Recently, I purchased a 160 GB IPod Classic from Wal-Mart. Once I got home and synched my notoriously large music library onto it, I immediately noticed a huge difference in the sound quality.  The kicks and snares were ugly, and the bass was even more disgusting! All of my favorite songs were so distorted.  At first I assumed it was the headphones, so I tested them out on my ''ex'' 8GB IPod Touch to compare - and everything was perfectly fine (and better).
I searched my issue online and seen many buyers like me having the same exact problem, and most of them purchased their IPods in 2009-2010!  How can a problem like this go unsolved for so long? Why wouldn't Apple change/fix the software to be up with the newer generation's standards if they are still for sale today? There has to be someway this could be fixed.
So all I want to know is if I really wasted $249 on a device so worthless? I only bought this product for the 160 GB of memory since I couldn't fit all of my music on my IPod Touch,  and now I feel robbed.

Music post 2008 ish is recorded into an MP3 file at higher volumes than prior to that era.
Modern DAC (digital to analogue converter) can deal with this increase in volume (earlier albums, particularly those ripped from 1980's CDs) will sound quieter.
Unfortunately the DAC in the ipod classic hasn't been updated from one of the early versions.
What I've done for some recent purchases, is run them through this volume levelling software:
    http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php
There is an equivalent version for the Mac.  They are identical in operation, and one version is no better than the other.
I reduce the volume by about 10% on a whole album, even if it's only 2 or three tracks that are distorting.
Remember to keep a copy of your original files for safety.
The quality of the music does not degrade, and I'm really fussy and have $300 senheiser IE80s.  It's just the volume that is reduced so it doesn't upset the iPod classic DAC.
However, there's no getting away from it, that this is a REAL PAIN, and there should be NO EXCUSE for apple selling such an inadequate product.  It shouldn't be too long before the iPod touch or Nano is in the 200Gb region.  After all, they can fit 64Gb on a Micro SD card whose outer casing is smaller than my small fingernail, what are Apple waiting for?

  • Why am I getting sound distortion when connecting iPad 2 to amplifier.

I am getting sound distortion when connecting iPad or iPod thru amplifier using AirPlay or 3.5mm to rca cables. Also the sound has far too much bass. No problems when connected in car.

It sounds like a mismatched impedence.  What are you connecting to?   the output from the jack is intended for headphones, and is not just an audio out.
Try turning the volume on the pad way down, and use the gain on your amp, and see if that minimizes the issue.
There is a pure audio signal for both channels on the 31 pin plug, but you would need a special cable to use it.  I would bet they are available if you google.  Although I have read that the 31 pin signal is not filtered like the headphone output, so while it is a pure audio output, there may be some noise in it that would need to be filtered.
Try google for a 31 pin cable.  ( the input for the car is probably built to take a signal from a headphone output, while your amp may be expecting a lower power signal)

  • IMac Sound Distortion

I just got an iMac Quad Core i5 and i must say I'm fairly disappointed. The audio is distorted terribly, first I thought it might be just the hardware, but I also have an M-Audio Profire 2626 which works splendidly on my IBM compatible notebook. I have since downgraded from Lion back to 10.6.8, both version have the same issues.
Symptoms (on internal and external interfaces):
Hard Left & Hard Right balance, 75% volume -> exceedingly audible distortion.
    Centered balance -> audible distortion.
Does anyone know if this is an OSX issue, or could it be hardware based?
I am going to bootcamp install Windows 7 now...

Just to update some of my findings (incase it might help others):
What Apple doesn't care to mention is that the volumes can be driven far beyond clipping, what I did was, I played the same track through my M-Audio Profire 2626 and it appears that iTunes was overloading the input, it was clipping all the way, I brought iTunes down a couple of notches, panned hard left & right, and it worked fine. I switched back to the internal audio, did the same with iTunes & the master volume, and voila it worked! I have since concluded that iTunes & other audio apps were overloading the hardware creating the sound distortion.

  • AE hooked to stereo - very high volume!  adjustable?

I have been using an Airport Express plugged with analog headphone plug into a fairly high-end Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver. Works great.
I just bought a 2nd Airport Express and plugged it into a much smaller, far lower end Tivoli Radio Works system. I had my iPod's dock plugged into the aux input and was using that fine. I replaced the iPod with the AE and notice that the AE-output sound is extremely high volume. I set the Tivoli's volume to maybe 3-4% and it's as loud as I'd ever listen to it normally.
Not sure why I didn't notice this on the Yamaha - perhaps it scales down the input? Is there a way to get the AE to "quiet down" on the Tivoli? Some AE setting? Thanks.
Is it damaging to plug the AE to analog line in on a stereo, given the volume?
    blakespot

For the AX, the analog audio is handled by a Texas Instruments PCM2705 digital-to-analog converter which it outputs on a 3.5mm stereo minijack. It has a maximum output level of 1.53V, which is 2.3dB lower than a CD standard's 2V. The output impedance is around 15 ohms across the audioband.
It appears that the audio input port's impedance, between your Yamaha and Tivoli, are different and why you are hearing a significant difference in volumes. The signal from the AX is not amplified, and thus, why it would require either powered speakers or a LINE in for play back.
The AX gets is audio source, by default, from iTunes. You can adjust the output level from there.

  • How to process overly compressed high volume audio files

I used a process in scientific filters in audition 3 to process overly compressed high volume audio files normalized to 0 db. It was like magic.
How would you process this sort of file in Audition 6.

Below was the process used in Adobe Audition 3. The sound was much improved. Try the steps on a file you have to hear the difference.
Effects- Amplitude - Normalize - uncheck the decibles format box - normalize to and normalize L/R boxes checked, enter 48 into percentage box.
    After normalization was complete
Effects - Filters - Scientific filters - select Chebychev 1 tab - band pass button and select the following parameters.
Cutoff =4, high cutoff = 22050, order = 18 all other settings at defaults values (0). Delay radio button sellected, check the extended range box, press OK.
Increase to appropriate volume after processing if necessary.

  • IO-Link RF Output Bass sounds distorted

Hi, Having just recieved a new SKY+HD box after my trusty white box finally conked out,  I've had to fit an IO-link RF box to get my other TV (using a magic eye) working.   I got this all set up and working easily enough, but for one thing: The sound distorts badly on loud low frequency sounds (eg during bass sounds in background music or rumbling sound effects).  I've seen this problem mentioned on this board and various others, but I haven't been able to find a solution. I'm now on my third IO box having tried the Global one from SKY; the triax one and another cheaper model. I've tried changing/retuning the RF channel on my TV to no effect. There seems to be no way of adjusting the output volume from the Sky box or the input volume on the TV. I've tried connecting a short cable in case my cabling was faulty (although it worked fine with my old Sky box) Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi, The problem I'm having is with low bass sounds becoming distorted (clicky/raspy) on my second TV while using a IO-link box with Magic eye TV-link set up.  Eg. while watching 'Penny Dreadful' the other night there was a loud heartbeat sound effect used in the program which distorted badly, that's the sort of sound that seems to be affected. My Magic eye TV-link set up is very simple, there are no splitters or amplifiers, just a shortish (<10m) coaxial cable between the IO-link and the Magic eye.  Everything was working fine with my old white Sky+ box, it's just changing to a new Sky+HD wi-fi box and introducing the IO-link thats changed. (as I said in my previous post, I have tried 3 different IO-link boxes) Further to my original post I have also tried updating the sky box software and switching off my wi-fi router (in case of interference) all to no effect.  I've tried loads of RF channels (recomended ones and at random).  The actual signal on my other TV is actually quite strong; the picture is very good; the sound is very clear apart from the low base distortion; the Magic eye changes channels no problem. Any ideas? I've can't think of anything else to try...
