No Sound; All options greyed out

Output options for sound are greyed in Preferences and the desktop sound icon. In the Audio MIDI Setup window, the default output says Built-in Output and the System Output also says Built-in Output. No other options available for either.
Just below halfway down there is Audio Input, which has a bunch of info on the left, but on the right where it says Audio Output, there is just a greyed out message that says Output is Not Supported.
I also tried the option/apple/p/r, got the three chimes, but sound is still greyed out.
Any gurus out there who can tell me what simple thing I did to cause this, or is it a hardware/sofware bug?

it doesn't matter if you've used the ports or not.. there is a sensor inside the audio ports that will automatically switch your audio in and/or out into digital mode if it trips and then 'thinks' there's a digital cable connected. basically, if you open your sound control panel and display the output pane and it says 'digital out', and the volume control (and everything else) is greyed out, and it says something about this device not having volume control... then this is exactly the situation where the port sensor has clicked on to digital and is staying there. unfortunately, the sensor seems to be quite fragile and there are plenty of users that are suddenly wondering why they have no sound, and why the sound ouput only says digital and the options are greyed out. it would be at least a comfort to be able to say that this only can happen if you've been plugging things into the port (such as headphones), but I've heard of this happening to people regardless.
anyway, look for the signs I mentioned: the digital output option being the only available choice in the sound control panel, with options greyed out. and also a red light coming out of the port. if this is happening to you, then you need to get the machine fixed cos that sensor is jammed.

On my new MacBook Pro / Lion, Sound icon is greyed out at start up, as well as the output volume in System Preferences (though sound can be heard, you just can't change the volume); only workaround found so far: plugging in/out earphone, then sound icon is reactivated.
Do you have any idea? Concurrent access to sound output from another software? (Skype, Growl...?)
PS: in Windows 7 / bootcamp, volume settings work perfectly from start up

Hi macwzrd, I followed your procedure and... IT WORKS!! I rebooted several times now, and I still have a true black sound icon in the menu bar. So the issue seems to be fixed, thanks!
BUT now, _coreaudiod process is taking *much* of my cpu resources (136 coreaudiod _coreaudiod 114,7 5 3,4 MB Intel (64 bit)) and the fan keeps turning on and on like mad...
Any ideas on how to stop this strange behaviour?

I just downloaded and installed FCP X 10.1.2 and was noticing that under Music and Sound that my FCP sound effects folder is missing. Any suggestions as to how to get it on there. Thanks for any help.

Yes i went to additional content, it said everything up to date. I also did the quit FCP and then start Garage Band and quit it and restarted FCP still no FCP sound effects folder

When I try to add a new additional account to mail the email address box is greyed out, why?

Do you mean the "POP or IMAP" bullet is grayed out?
If this is the case, please open your registry editor and check if the following registry values exist and the value data is set to 1:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Options
Name: DisableIMAP
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Options
Name: DisablePOP3
If this is the case, change the value data of the two values to 0 and then test the issue again.

"Replace with After Effects Composition" greyed out using CC - WHY??

Hi All,
I am doing a project in Premiere Pro CC but need to dynamic link to After Effects CC. The "replace with After Effects Composition" button is greyed out and I can't understand why, both are installed!
I still have Premiere Pro CS6 and AE CS6 installed, because they contain plug-ins I use regularly, could this be causing an issue? I can't think why it would.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclinkmediaserver\1.0 and rename 1.0 as old1.0 and also C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclinkmediaserver\7.0 and rename it as old7.0.
Reset the preferences of After effects and Premiere pro from :
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects and rename 12.0 and 12.1 as old12.0 and old12.1. In the same location C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Premiere Pro and rename 7.0 as old7.0.
Restart the machine after these steps and then try to use dynamic link

Import command on PSE-13 on Mac greyed out - why?

I recently installed an upgrade from PSE-11 to PSE-13 on my Mac running OS10.9.5 and the Import command under the File pull down menu is greyed out preventing me from inputting images from my scanner.

Hi, I have just upgraded from PSE11 to 13 and like many many people I find the Import / Export menu item is greyed out so I can no longer Import from my scanner which was fine in PSE11 - very frustrating !!! I have of course installed the plugin as advised but this does not work and yes at startup Twain building is apparently being carried out.
As stated in a previous Post one-on-one email support does not exist and Adobe just send a user in a loop of FAQs which never address the issue effectively. We appear to be suffering from Corporate Arrogance just like Apple. If one pays for support then maybe things, that should never have been a problem in the first place, get resolved. Why don't Adobe just remove the item from the menu and put us out of our misery.
I suppose it won't be long before Adobe will want monetise the use of Reader !!

How to slow sound effect down (stretch out)?

I exported a clip from final cut pro. Now I want to slow down the "whoosh" sound effect so it fits my piece correctly but I can't figure out how. When I select the layer everything is greyed out pretty much from the menu options at the top of the screen?

Time Stretch under the Process menu. I think it only works in the wave editing window, so for a multitrack thing you'll need to double click the file and open it in that editor.

All folders in import menus for After effects are greyed out since upgrade to Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks yesterday - all folders in the import menus (and save menus) are greyed out. I cannot access sub folders or even import a .mov directly from the desktop. All files and folders are greyed out.
I can use the "Open with" command on indivdual files which seems to work, but it's very inconvenient when working with multiple files.
Any ideas?

Unable to open folder - greyed out?

I seem unable to open a folder that I copied over from my Windows machine. The look of it is slightly greyed out, as if the folder were being copied still, but I know that it is not.
Does anyone have any idea of why this might be and what I can do to fix it?
I was able to open it just fine on my windows machine, but now am unable to open it in snow leopard.

no error message, no nothing. just nothing happens. its quite odd.
I found a work around though, albeit a bit of an odd one...for anyone reading this that has the same problem - I made an "alias" of the folder in question, then was able to load the folder by loading the alias (only once though, wouldn't load a 2nd time), then copy all the info from the folder into a new folder.
voila you have access to the folder now.
an odd way to do it, but I couldn't find any other way of getting access.
edit: seems it might have been due to copying a write-protected file over from Windows XP
