Sound Fonts: How to record?

I can get the sound fonts to play in Garageband player but the song sent to iTunes the instruments defaults to the software instruments? And while we are at it is it possible to convert sound fonts to software instruments?
imac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Using SoundFontSynth and load a sf2 file and apply it to a midi track, depending on the sf2 file they seem to vary, GB plays the ihe instrument but when the song is sent to iTunes the new instrument either is changed back to the instrument applied when the midi file was loaded or doesn't play at all.
Since I first asked I tried another sf2 file and it worked the amended instrumentation played. For somone new to this it is bewildering but I am keen to learn.

  • How to record screen video with sound but not playing while its recording

Hi, I'm trying to figure out a smart way to record some video lectures using my computer. I note that the Quicktime player is able to do that, but it confines your screen to a certain size so anything that falls into that screen capture zone will be recorded which is fine as i get a separate monitor soon so i can just chuck it one side to record while I'm doing other work.
But what im still trying to figure out is how the sound can also be simultaneously recorded by the software (be it Quicktime or not) and yet not be playing out loud on the speakers so i can do my work and not get distracted by that.
Any line-in or some clever way to do that?
Windows options also possible using parallels if anyone has a solution

    Hey Jeffrey,
The easy solution to this is through the utilization of SoundFlower (Completely free).
Here are two tutorials that will guide you through the process of capturing your System's Sound as well as recording whatever is playing on the screen:

  • How do i fix sound font fail for audigy 2

all of the suddon my sound stopped working and my diagnostics say sound font fail. how do i fix this problem?

I had the exact same problem updating the drivers for my Audigy 2 Platinum EX, but I think I managed to solve the problem. This was quite awhile ago, but I think I remember how I got it to work.
First of all, which update did you download? The "Digital Rights Management" driver update was the one giving me that problem, and this was after installing the main drivers and programs from my Audigy 2 CD. But, I think the reason why it gives this message is because you need to install one of the other driver updates first, then install this DRM update. Look under the driver details and it says the following:
    "<EM>Requirements</EM>:
Microsoft? Windows? XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 </LI>
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 or Audigy 2 ZS series internal audio device </LI>
<EM>EAX 4.0 ADVANCED HD Driver Patch Update for Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS (released on 29 March, 2004) installed, or Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS Driver Update (released on 29 July, 2004) installed</EM>."</LI>
Strangely enough, it appears this update requires you install an older driver update first (EAX4DRV_AUDIGY2__84_50.exe) then afterwards try running the Digital Rights Management update.
I think this is right, but I'm not 00% sure.

Try another browser such a Safari. If you get the same issue then it's probably the site, if it works OK on another browser then it's probably Chrome and you should re-post on a Chrome forum discussion board.

  • How do I remove the "empty hall" sound of a voice recording?

I have a recording of an interview done in a guys 10x10 "empty" office. It sounded like he's recording in his bathroom. Does anyone know how to clean up this audio so it sounds a little more like it was done in a sound booth?
What I have is a mixed version that has a little music under his voice. He mixed it over his voice trying to hide the "I recorded my webcast from my bathroom" sound...
I'm not sure how to post it here, but I could email anyone some of the audio if you'd like to play with it.
    Thanks for your help!

    > So reducing any resonant frequency will have to alter the sound of the original stimulus - it's completely unavoidable.
Correct. EQ will affect whatever is in the recording. That means it affects the original stimulus plus resonant effects of the room. The fact that EQ affects the original stimulus in the recording is a drawback; but it does not mean the technique never will work.
    > And by and large it has been found that altering the EQ like this makes things worse, not better.
This depends on the recording: the nature of the resonance, the decay time, etc. If resonance in the recording described in message #1 is the most distracting problem, then reducing resonance through EQ may yield an improvement.
You repeatedly emphasize that EQ will affect the original stimulus. Clearly you are very focused on this aspect of using EQ. Yes. It will affect the original stimulus. We already comprehend this. No one suggested otherwise. Got it. Agreed. :).
Moving on: the fact that EQ affects the original stimulus in the recording is a drawback to using EQ. Yet that may still be preferable to leaving the resonance in the recording. As you state, EQ will alter the desired sound (original speaker's voice) along with the sound one attempts to attenuate. So it is safe to conclude that the outcome will not be perfect.
Nevertheless, given an imperfect world in which a recording that was made has the unfortunate quality of sounding like it was made in a bathroom (as the original poster described it), using EQ to reduce resonant frequencies may indeed yield an improvement.
    > you clearly haven't the faintest idea of what you are talking about, and obviously haven't tried this.
More overstatements. I suggest a modicum of nuance.
Back to the FAQ you cited: it does contain a reasonable suggestion regarding EQ. ozpeter recommended trying a parametric EQ. This is a reasonable thing to try because it may yield an improvement. Mind you, not a guaranteed improvement, but nevertheless it is worth a try.

  • How to record from the video in or S-video Ports on Qosmio G40?

Can anyone tell me how to record from the video in or S-video ports, because i've tried the Ulead DVD factory program and the only capture device it could see was the webcam, and it did capture from it
After that i've downloaded the update file that was provided by the support website
The devices that the program could see are the TV tuner and the webcam (which it couldn't access anymore for some reason)
After that i've downloaded a newer update which simply is the same as the last update and seems that someone in the support website directed the link of the new update which they don't have to the file of the previous update which doesn't really do anything.

    Hi
There are 2 s-video ports; s-video out port is not designed to capture the signals from any external source. The name of this port says everything; its an OUT port!
The s-video-in port must be placed at the right side of the notebook. Dont mix the both ports. But note; this port receives only the video signals. To hear the sounds, use a video cable to connect the sound terminals of the audio device and your computer.
    Red: sound right channel
    White: sound left channel
The Ulead DVD Movie factory can be used to capture this signal.

  • How to record guitar in Logic Pro 8

    Hi,
Well, I´ve got a Mac Mini, Logic Pro 8, Audio Kontrol 1 audio interface, and an acoustic guitar. What I would like to do is to record my guitar songs into Logic Pro 8 and add other sound effects. My problem is, however, that I can´t figure out how to record guitar using Logic Pro 8. In the "Preferences" I choose "Core Audio" as device. I connect my guitar into the audio interface (Audio Kontrol 1) and from the audio interface to my Mac Mini using an USB.
When I start playing, Logic Pro is silent. When I record, there is no sound. What is even more strange is that GarageBand is working perfect! So I guess it has something to do with the settings in Logic Pro 8. So, I ask you guys...do you know have to solve this problem? If so, I would be very grateful!
    Best regards,
    Tor

    Thanks guys!
I will try this as soon as I come home!
I will let you know how it works.

Yes, that's it. I have only done that once, just to try it out. I believe that you can put them in a folder after conversion though.

  • Vienna Multi Layered Sound Fonts

Some of the more sophisticated keyboards have weighted action that uses a different sampled sound for each range of velocity. That way you get the sound of a piano played softly as opposed to the sound of a piano played normally with the volumn turned down.
Is Vienna 2.4 capable of creating sound fonts which are organized in this way and respond to velocity by switching samples? If so, are there instructions some where as to how to build such a font?
Also are there any piano fonts out there for download that use this technique?

    Hi Joseph,
Not at this time, although if other layered libraries offer VST support, there is a method for inclusion in Soundbooth.  Generally, all of these custom, dynamic sound libraries are pretty segregated.
While Adobe's own offerings are limited to the 4 or 5 dozens scores, there is an SDK available that enables anyone to create their own Scores or Score libraries.  It's our hope that more third party score libraries start to become available, and our long-term goal is to make it simpler for our users to create their own dynamics scores from their own compositions or other pieces of music.  Ideally, I'd love to offer a tool where someone could import any piece of music, we could analyze it and split it into various compositional components, then allow a user to shuffle, extend, loop, or skip those pieces as they saw fit.  Right now, we're probably a bit away from that

  • How to record from an external source

I recently bought a hp envy 17" and I cant figure out how to record onto this laptop.  I have to jacks on the left side, one with an icon of a headphones, the other with an icon of a headset.  I want to be able to take input a stereo jack to record into one of these and record into a program like Audacity.  Under device manager it says I have an ATI High Def Audio Device.  How do I record from an external source?  Thanks.

@toolchic, first make sure that in the IDT HD Sound properties [right click the IDT ICON near the clock, which says "Controls IDT Audio Settings" on mouse over the icon], and choose "Open Audio control panel".
Next choose "Recording > Settings". Here choose the input you want to record with. In your case choose "Integrated Microphone Array" on the top left. Click "Settings" just bellow, slide the bar to "10db boost" on the right, and slide the recording level bar about midway up [at the bottom of the window where all the volume controls for all recording devices are].
While you/re there, it's a good idea to mute the "External mic", and mute any other recording device that you do not need. Next, click the "Processing" tab below the settings tab, and choose "Reduce noise". Leave all the others unchecked. for these will produce a not so nice sound. This helps to eliminate fan noise and other background noise in your recording.
Now when you open your preferred digital audio program e.g.. Audacity [it's free and pretty easy to use, see link below], you can choose the INTEGRATED MIC ARRAY in the recording options. Choose that and then "arm" the track for recording [Usually an icon with R in the recording controls] Next click "record" to begin recording. Of course these steps depend on the digital audio recording program you're using.
If you don't have a dedicated digital audio recording program, and if you have windows 7 or vista, you can record long sessions with the default Microsoft recording program [this program is useless in XP, for it only records for like a minute or so, maximum!. A dedicated program such as Audacity records depending on how much hard drive disk space, or close to that.
@fritz, in essence, input jacks of most current notebooks, external computer mics are mono, but they use a  stereo mini jack [or 3 band, if I understood you correctly]. These are the same as regular earphone jacks. One band is signal, one is earth, and the other is +5 Volts to drive the condenser [these are known as "condenser mics"]. But if you use a dedicated studio type recording mic, then you need a dedicated preamp, and if it is a condenser as apposed to a dynamic mic, the preamp needs to supply what's known as "phantom power" [typically 45v] through the input jack where the mic is plugged into.
However, if you record from the mic in/line in jack of a line out of say a mic preamp, channel mixer deck, CD/DVD/TV etc., then this has to be a stereo mini jack [has 3 bands]. Special cables with 2 [stereo] RCA jacks to mini jack are the ones to use. That is if the line out connector of your recording course is RCA [your typical TV/CD//DVD audio / video out or in are RCA connectors e.g..].
    Did this help?

  • Does anyone know how to record directly to a track using Logic's effects?

Hi there, does anyone know how to record directly to a track using Logic's effects? I know that it needs to run through a buss somehow but I am not quite sure how. Need to Di a bass and want to keep the levels down using a compressor (recording strait into a Mbox with Logic 8). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you route your Bass into a channel in Logic and put plugins/fx on the channel plus you have monitoring on (and monitoring off on your external mixer) - you can record while listening to the effected sound. However what is being recorded is the clean/raw audio - this is a good thing as you can later change your compression/fx settings - printing the effect at this early stage is normally avoided.

  • How to record vinyl at 24bit?

    Hi guys,
I have some vinyl records Id like to record using audition. Normally I record at 16bits and just burn on cd but I recently read that you can record at 24bits and burn it to dvd for better sound. Can someone please tell me what I need to do this? I know I can record using audition but do I need special burning software to do this. I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 for burning usually. Any help would be great!
    MaxQ

Okay, it doesn't take much telling, and of course it's not in the book, so here's
    Vinyl Processing 101
    >Where do I tell Audition to record in 32bit float before I start recording...
In Edit View (which is fine for recording vinyl) you get the option in the 'New Waveform' pane that pops up when you hit the record button - so you select 44.1k, stereo and under Resolution, 32-bit Float.
In Multitrack View, it's a preference. So you go to Edit>Preferences>Multitrack and set the Rec Bit Depth default to 32-bit, and whilst you are there make sure that Auto Mixdown is set to 32-bit as well. But quite frankly, unless you have a specific reason for recording in MV I wouldn't bother when it comes to vinyl - you have to do most of the processing in EV anyway.
The only valid reason that I can think for recording in MV of would be perhaps to save a little time at the end of the side of a disk; if you record in Multitrack it's direct to file, but in EV recording's still to a temp file that then has to be saved to a permanent one, by you, as a discrete operation. And if you are worried about cockups that might involve re-recording (which can be time-consuming) then save two copies and only work on one of them
    >Can you type me out a quick list of how to record and what order I should do conversions from 32bit to 16.
    >should I EQ and remove noise in 32bit or do it after I convert to 16?
The whole idea is that you only convert
to a 16-bit file once - just for the listening copy. So it's absolutely the last thing you do after
    all processing.
For a side of vinyl, (an LP with several tracks) the usual - but not only - order to process is to record in EV, normalize the whole side to about -1dB or thereabouts and then do scratch removal, and after that, do noise reduction. The reason for normalizing the whole side first is that this way, you retain the relative mastering levels between the tracks - assuming that these decisions were actually made, of course. You don't
have to do that - you can split the tracks out first and deal with them individually if you want, normalizing each one separately. Your choice.
If you feel that you need to alter the EQ, or do any other sort of mastering, like harmonic enhancement (be careful with this; it's very easy to overdo it) or stereo widening, then do this after all of the click and noise processing - subjectively, a lot of clicking alters your perception of the sound, so you need to get that out of the way first. I wouldn't bother with loudness maximising or any other sort of compression - this gets pretty tiring to listen to, but you may like, under some circumstances, to add just a little reverb - often processing can reduce the effects of the original, so putting just a touch back is, on a lot of 'commercial' tracks, quite an acceptable thing to do IMHO.
Having done all of that, then the last thing you need to do is to make sample rate converted copies that you can write to a CD. This is the point where you get the option to dither, and whatever setting you choose, it's going to be a lot better than not choosing one at all. There's a lot of stuff in the old Syntrillium forum about the best dither to use for vinyl, but personally I don't think it makes a huge difference which noise-shaping option you use, although if I recall correctly, either C1 or C2 was popular. I use the dither provided in the full-blown iZotope Ozone, so for me it's not an issue.
There's stuff all over the forum about the correct process for creating CDs with or without gaps, etc so I won't rehash that. But for most vinyl work, the above will do. You might, according to what you end up processing, though, want to look up references to Younglove's decrackling script - this can often improve results, although we don't hear so much about it these days - I wonder why?
    Of course, there's more - there's
always more. Most of it, though, is to do with dealing specifically with the vinyl, but you do also have other processing options that I haven't dealt with - mainly because they are slightly more esoteric. Options here include sum and difference processing for noise (aka Mid-Side) and using external processors like Har-Bal for more subtle corrections. But as I said, that's more esoteric and most of the time, you don't need it to get acceptable results.
    * You have options here - quite often I take a chance and normalize a file before I save it, either as a working or a safe copy, as that's absolutely undo-able if it's 32-bit, with no loss at all.
