Sound for phone but vibrate for text

Hi. I would like to set my iPhone up so that it will make a sound for calls, but only vibrate for text. This is very important to me because I am on call for my job. Thus I would like to be awakened if called, but not for receiving an SMS.
A similarly useful feature would be to be able to use a different volume ringtone for text than for call (that way I could just set up a very quiet rintone for text).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The volume for ringtones for the phone and txt are set with the volume rocker on the outside of the phone. That is the same no matter what. Once solution would be to create a ringtone and reduce the volume of it when you create it. Another solution that I have seen mentioned here for a similar situation was to set the SMS tone to None. That should then allow it just to vibrate if you have vibrate turned on.

There are two places where vibrations can be set.
One is the Settings > Sounds
The other area is Settings > Notifications
If you have an app set to Alert, it may have a vibration set for it.

I downloaded ios7 and now have no sound when I play music on itunes nor do I have it when I try movies on Netflix. I get sound IF I plug in earbuds, but no sound if unplugged! NO SOUND! I get sounds for texts, calls, etc, but nothing else. HELP!

I do not have SOUND after downloading IOS7. I can use earbuds, but no sound when not plugged in. I cannot play music, hear a movie on iTunes or Netflix. Sound works for incoming calls, msgs, etc, but NO sound for music or movies. HELP!

I used Mpeg Streamclip last night to take the .mov files to DV, but same thing I put into iDVD and made a disk image. Once all done i opened the image and the videos were there, but no audio.
This first dvd had 2 of the videos in it the totaled about 90mins. I will try using the higher format. Also with having MPEG streamclip now, I guess I should go back to the .WMV files and try to converting form them? instead of the .mov files.

Latest update no sound for text, email, plugging in ipad

since the latest update a couple of days ago my iPad sounds will not work. I mean the ones for incoming text messages, emails, plugging the iPad in- ALL STANDARD SOUNDS OFFERED BY APPLE NOT downloaded sounds! This is very frustrating. I have synced my iPad on my computer, i have shut down the iPad numerous times, if anyone else is having this problem please let me know. If it's an Apple bug please fix it.

I think that you have system sounds muted.
If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7 or iOS 8. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

Is there a way to get the phone to vibrate when you get an incoming text?

The only way I ahave found to make the vibe for tests only is to actually set a ring tone for the message by going into settings -->sounds. After setting a tone in the settings I can flip the side switch to make the phone silent and then, and only then, does it ONLY vibrate for texts, but at the same time, everything is silent too. The phone will still vibrate for calls as well.

Yes I am using the one that was preinstalled. Yes - that is already turned on. :-(
I'm pretty sure that I am stuck with a lemon until I will be able to get a new one in two years, or until I change companies :-(. After being a loyal customer for almost 10 years, I am really disappointed in Verizon and their Insurance company - I paid $99 expecting to get a new phone.

No sound for text or asterisk on home page.

My girlfriend has a Q10 and when she receives a text the phone will not vibrate or make noise, the asterisk does not appear on top right corner of text icon on home page either? The text is there and she can reply but the small D that lets you know its delivered doesn't appear where it should either, only the check mark even though its delivered? I have restored it to an old back up file and it seems to work ok. This has happened several times, sometimes its the text that doesn't work and sometimes its bbm. this is getting tiresome. I too have a Q10 and have had no trouble with it, hers has been taken in and sent away but still has same problems after update??? I hope some one can help!

Have you tried adjusting them in the Sounds setting to see if that will prompt them to work again?

I have lost sound on texting. Happened after going out of U.S. and coming back. This happened recently when I went out of the country too. I called ATT--did soft reset, checked all settings and that didn't work. It does vibrate, but no sound.

I have no sound for text, games, music, web.

This just started 4 days ago. The phone has not been wet. The silent button is not on, the do not disturb button is off. When I press the volume buttons for ringtone, only the ringer picture shows up but the volume buttons are not showing up. When I try to rest my phone it is asking for password, I have never set one. For each mail account, along with designating a primary SMTP server, you should be able to just turn off any and all other SMTP servers you have listed. In that case, if there is a problem with comcast, the message send should just fail.
Also make sure your comcast smtp settings are correct (port, likely 587 but might be something else for comcast, whether you should be suing SSL or not, do you need authentication or not).
You might find the comcast forums useful for getting the settings right - I found this:

The second poster notes, SSL should be on, authentication should be "password" and you should be using port 995

How can I change the settings such that the phone does not vibrate when I receive a message in silent mode, but vibrates for calls?

I'd like the phone to vibrate when I receive a call when it is in silent mode (as it already does) but I'd like it to not vibrate when I receive a text in silent mode. I know how to set both (calls and texts) to not vibrate in silent mode, or choose no vibration for texts when loud or silent, but not what I just mentioned. Thanks.

Try this - Settings > Sounds > Text Tone > Vibration (at the top) > None.
Edit - just read the last part of your post closer and I'm not aware of such an option.

Why does my iphone have sounds for everything but text, Including calls?

For some reason my iphone 4S doesn't make any sounds when i get a text, it doesn't even vibrate. But with calls and everything else it does exactly what it's supposed to. It started when i just recently updated to IOS 6.1.2. I've checked the switch above the volume buttons, i switched to assistive touch to turn off mute, which helped for one text but than the sound stopped again, but the settings stayed the same. And i also tried cleaning the ports. I will only reset my phone as a last resort, so any ideas will be helpfull.

i wondered the same thing.
You have to go to the "Restrictions" page of your device's Settings and make sure "iTunes" is turned on.
This is why it only happened on my children's iPods and not on mine.
The reason a full restore works is that it resets all your passwords and allows everything automatically until you reset the restrictions again.

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

My iPhone 4s no longer has sound for any of the applications but it does have sound for phone functions. Where is the setting for app sound? I have gone to the multitask screen and the volume bar is empty.

I recently found my phone outside in light rain (it had been there about 20 minutes). It had some glitches at first, however after letting it rest overnight it seemed to mostly recover. The one problem I am having is that I no longer have sound for any of my applications. I do have sound for phone fuctions, and I am able to use the speaker for phone functions.
When I am in my applications, including music/videos, the only way I can hear is if I use my earbuds. I am able to make a video and it will record sound just fine.
When I go to the multitask screen, the volume bar is empty and I cannot adjust it using the side buttons (even though in settings I have that feature activated). I completely reset all of my settings tonight and that did not make a difference.
Is there a setting I am missing, or am I just SOL? I am trying to avoid having to get a whole new phone but it is very frustrating to not have sound with my applications.
