Sound for when a USB key inserted

For a decade or more I have used the wonderful launcher and program organizer DragThing by James Thomson - excellent. It also gives me sounds for things like when I plug-in a USB key or insert a CD or DVD-- and lots more.
But I'm now configuring a computer for my daughter and I am trying to keep things real simple as she is a PC user and I don't want to throw too much at her that she won't use. So the Dock will be the first "launcher" along with Launch Pad -- BUT
BUT-- how to get the sounds for special actions like inserting a disc or USB key if I don't use DragThing? Are there other small programs out there that can add these features. YES I've tried to google this but have not found the exact thing for which I am seeking--

It is possible. It certainly has to spend time mounting the USB key info to the system while it boots up since it attempts to mount every file system connected to it when it starts up. Try booting without it to see if it makes a difference.

Kinda like most phones I have had in the past that play a little jingle when you turn it on or off but always gave you the option to turn it on or off.

What causes a USB key inserted in to MacPro 2008 and then into Mac Book Pro 4.1 to have all data destroyed as well 2 different keys.Issue was both computers didnt recognize the key any more and the the data were reformated and not accessible key ro 4.1

The end result was that the original content was not readable as reformatted
Peculiar is that the english text was turned into chinese
By using google translation it turned out that the chinese text was a totally different subject matter from the original content
Both computers have the latest intego virus system a,which were run and didnt show any attack
Has some one gotten acccds to our system and installed something on our hard disks without being detected
This is a very strange happening

Sometimes Chinese can be the result of text being misread as UTF-16 encoding when it is something else. In that case the translation should be gibberish, however.

How can you get custom sounds for when you sign into iChat?

When you sign into my friend's iChat account on her computer, a computer voice says "Sarah is awesome!", and she obviously custom made that, and I was wondering how you can make custom sounds like that when you sign in.

It can be done two ways.
1) as the other poster describes in making an Alert Sound and placing it in Users/(your account)/Library/Sounds and then selecting it in iChat > Preferences > Alerts fro the action you want.
2) In Tiger/iChat 3 only
Go to the iChat Alert Preferences details above and there is an option to have iChat Speak a text phrase which you can type in the Phrase. (this is not there in iChat 4)

Auto run projector file from usb key

Hey guys
I was wondering if anyone has written an .inf file that will
automatically start a projector file when a usb key is inserted
into the usb port.

i am not sure if you mean a .swf file or the .exe standalone
file.
either way this should work. just replace the 'yourfile.exe'
with your exe/swf file. Hope this helps.

How can i save every bookmark on a usb key individually,so when i connect it i click the link,and voila

so...what i want to do,is,save all my bookmark or link,on a usb key,cause i have too much,but i need it to be all individual...not like the json export format,because like that,it's kind of like 1 file zipped all the link together...i need to be able to when a connect my usb key,i click the link and it load in firefox...as exemple...in my bookmarks folder...i have about an hundred and more files,and in each of them a hundred or so of links...so is there a way to do that,maybe with another program...i want to erase the one i have in my firefox to put them all on the usb key...thx in advance,waiting for your answers...and i have window 7

hi...and thx for yours time and answers...i tried what you guys said,and it does not work for me....it work but not all of them...saying some error happens....i really have to much...i tried to do folder by folder,but that does not work either,,,it zipped the total of the link instead of the folder selected....i saw that i can transfer them one by one into a new folder on my disk...but one by one gonna be a hella long thing to do....but work...i tried the keyboard shortcuts...i can select all of them but not copy them into the new folder on my disk....any idea following that....i really just want to put them all on my usb key...and not use the firefox application to store then on firefox web...thx in advance

USB key ejecting itself when transferring large files

I have a LG 16G USB key formatted in MacOS extended (journaled), I've been encountering a particular issue when I try to transfer files taken on another computer and copying them from the key to my Macbook pro ( OSX 10.6.2). after it start transferring it ejects itself with the "the disk was not ejected properly" message, then reappears right away in the finder...
the problem doesn't present itself when I copy a file from my macbook pro to the key, and then try transferring it back to my computer. and I've tried this with both small files (under 200mb) and large files (over 4G).
I've also noticed the transfer rate is very slow when this happens.
so far the problem only presents itself when I transfer files from one of the MacPro's in my university's studios, but since I work a lot on these machine, this is becoming quite a problem. I don't have the complete specs of these machines, they all run on Leopard, probably 10.5.something. not SL... perhaps that's the problem?
I've seen similar post on the forum concerning this issue with TimeMachine backup drives, suggesting it had something to do with the sleep preferences, however I've tried all the potential solutions from these post and the problem persists.
So far the only solution I've found has been to transfer the files to my girlfriend's macbook (running on tiger), and then transferring the files in target mode from her computer to mine... quite inconvenient...
I have a feeling this might be due to the formatting of my key, I have a 2G USB key formatted in MS-DOS (FAT32) and have had no problems with it so far. The reason I formatted in Mac OS extended is simple, I work in the video field and with HD I find myself often moving around single files larger then 4GB, which I've come to understand isn't possible in FAT 32.

I have an external USB Card reader (indeed - two different readers), which have the same problems with self-ejecting disks. Every transfer of data from SD card from my camera is the pain now. There is many different themes related to the self-"the disk was not ejected properly" situation, but no working solution now.

How Can I Set an Application on a USB Drive to Automatically Open When the Drive is Inserted Into a Mac?

The title pretty much says it all. But if you don't understand, here is an example of what I want to happen:

Is it possible to make a BIOS usb key for a PC on a MAC?

I am not sure where to ask this question but If I needed to make a BIOS flash drive for a PC computer such as an HP Laptop or Desktop, would it be possible to do on the MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion? I ask this because I thought I was going to need to make a BIOS flash update for an HP system and I did not want to use a CD to do it. I had downloaded the flash drive tool from HP which under a windows system would make a USB flash drive. I tried running the tool under Windows 7 on both a VM session and a boot camp session but both times I would get a message saying something similar to "You don't have permission" even though I was doing it as an admin. Turns out I didn't need it anyway but for future references can I even make a bootable usb key for a PC on a Mac?

I found the problem that I had under the Windows 7 on Mac was the extractor(hpusbf.exe) was not running under the Admin mode so it wasn't given permission to modify the usb File system. I think the other issue is that I was trying this on a 8GB flash drive and it kept telling me the partition was too large. I found the switch to use 2048 blocks and it created a bootable flash drive. The problem I have now is when I tried it on my old HP laptop, it boots up saying "FreeDos Fat" and stops. So I don't know what is going on but I think I am going to stick to making bootable CDs I just have to get some Re-writable CDs so I don't waste the CDs.
I tried your solution on the mac side and tried copying the dos files over but the drive would not boot. I think the problem is that the command.com file is not set as a system file. I am not sure how you can set command.com as a system file for windows under the MAC operating system. I know in windows you use attrib +S filename.

How do I get sound out when I plug in a USB mic?

How do I get sound out when I plug in a USB mic? I cannot hear my instrument tracks either. It will record my vocals, but I can't hear them. If I unplug the mic and restore the internal devices, then I can hear all tracks, including the vocals. I'm sure there's a simple solution.

Prior to Logic 9, you cannot separately choose Input/Output audio devices, so you either have the USB Mic, or the Built-in audio (or an external audio interface).
To set up for 'mixed' devices, you need to use AudiMIDI Setup (Utilities folder) to create an Aggregate Device.

Note that I recall that it was 'sensitive' to which order you create the devices with some USB Mics.

Detecting when the user is inserting a USB token

Dear Forum,
From a Java GUI application I'm trying to detect when a USB token (CrypToken from Marx) is inserted.
When I run the program below with the USB token inserted it works fine. If I start the program and then inserts the USB token I keep getting a ProviderException.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's having us move the UM enabled users before we repoint the IP gateway, which is one of the final steps. Since we're just in pilot mode right now, we'd prefer to not re-point that just yet. Do you expect it shouldn't work? Is TechNet wrong or

Boot from USB Key (for Windows installation)

This is my weirdest issue ever:
I have a windows 8 installation key which i want to use with bootcamp. Everything worked flawlessly on my MacBook Air (late 2011).
What I did on MacBook Air:
Created MS-FAT Partition with Disk Utility
Plugged in Win8 USB Key
Restarted
Held alt (or option) key and booted from the USB Key
Installed without error
However, this procedure DOES NOT WORK on my MacBook Pro (2008) or my iMac (mid 2011)!!! They do NOT show the USB Key when I hold alt (or option) during startup.
Is Apple somehow not allowing this due to the presence of a CD-Drive on the Pro and iMac?
The Key still shows up on the MacBook Air and is bootable even after installation of win8. So the problem is not the USB Key.

Being recognized and allowing Windows to be installed from a USB key are to totally different things.
But I have not yet worked with the 2012 Standard model MBPs so maybe Apple changed something on them that does allow Windows to be installed from a USB drive. But for all other models that have a built in DVD drive you can't do it from USB.

When I connect my iPad2 to my tv using the AV adapter I can hear sound for everything else except for my movies. I can hear tv shows, music, videos off YouTube, etc. I just can't hear the movies. Any ideas of what may be wrong?

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).

I downloaded ios7 and now have no sound when I play music on itunes nor do I have it when I try movies on Netflix. I get sound IF I plug in earbuds, but no sound if unplugged! NO SOUND! I get sounds for texts, calls, etc, but nothing else. HELP!

I used Mpeg Streamclip last night to take the .mov files to DV, but same thing I put into iDVD and made a disk image. Once all done i opened the image and the videos were there, but no audio.
This first dvd had 2 of the videos in it the totaled about 90mins. I will try using the higher format. Also with having MPEG streamclip now, I guess I should go back to the .WMV files and try to converting form them? instead of the .mov files.
