  • Freezing after a few minutes of screen sharing?

Hello, when setting up a screen sharing session on mountain lion with a lion laptop (the ml is being controlled by the lion laptop), the 10.8 laptop freezes after a few minutes of the session. The mouse cursor still works locally, however no clicking or keyboard input is accepted. The remote controller also loses the connection, and a hard reboot is the only thing to bring the computer back.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Yes, that is exactly what I am experiencing.
I followed instructions and found that computer was set to log out after 120 minutes.  I don't know if that is the default setting or not, but I know I never set it that way myself, didn't even know the option was there.
I have always had the computer set to start screensaver after 15 minutes, display sleep after 30 minutes, and computer sleep after 1 hour.  The computer never logged me out with those settings until a couple of days ago when this problem started.  I had changed computer sleep to never so I could see if remote desktop on my ipad would be able to connect to the imac, and that is when the problem started.
I am trying setting screensaver to 10 minutes, display sleep to 15 minutes, and computer sleep to never, and see if that solves the problem.  I also unchecked the box to log out after 120 minutes.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

8.2 is out...perhaps that will address your problem.

  • Video Sound muted after a few minutes

Hi, guys. Since i updated my ipod and this happened a few time already. Video was playing fine but after a minute, the audio muted. Annoying, everytime i need to rewind so the sound will be back on. But again after a few minutes, the sound muted. Everytime i needed to rewind back a little to get back the sound on. Any idea of how to fix this problem?

You have to "update" it back to v 1.0 in order to stop these problems. It seems every single Ipod in existance will act this way with movies not bought through iTunes with ver 1.1.
Someone should sticky a thread where it's explained how to revert back to v. 1.0 and that it's currently the only way to prevent these stupid freezes.

  • IBook 500 GHz freezes after a few minutes

I have had a 500Mhz iBook G3 dual USB a couple of years and suddenly the screen went black. After searching online I found some repairs by either heating up the chip and causing the solder to re-melt or put an object on top of the chip to keep it pressed into place. I tried the latter and it started up fine. Now it will freeze completely after a few minutes. Once I put a cold pack over the area where the chip is and it stayed working fine for about an hour then it did freeze up again. Could it possibly be the material I used is causing excessive heat build up on the chip or logic board??? I may have over done the amount of material which I believe is a piece of old floor tile. I bought this iBook cheap and use it on my travels at hotels so I don't want to spend much money fixing it. Just wondering if I used another material on top of this chip if that would stop the freezing up.
Also, when I first "tested" this problem by squeezing the iBook in the area of the chip the display would come on, but if I squeezed a bit hard it sounded like the drive made a loud noise. Could the pressure affect the drive performance?

I'm wondering how stable the object you placed in there was/is? Maybe it has broken down and is no longer working properly.
Suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

Instructions for removing the lower case:

Now, as you may have experienced, all shims are not created equal, and it can matter what type of material you use.

Yes, but if you had too much pressure there, the hard drive probably would make grinding noises, letting you know that something was amiss with it. If you squeezed too hard initially and heard those noises, you know what I mean.

The symptoms you describe with and ALS model are indicative of a power supply failure, and not an issue with electrolytic capacitors on the logic board.
I was speaking about the components in the power supply, although the Logic Board components are also in visually good condition.
My concern is; replacing the PS may place greater pressure on the components of the Logic Board, which are obviously of the same age. Precipitating a similar failure in the LB at an early stage...
£100 for a power supply is one thing, then the probability of £200+ for a LB replacement is quite another. £300+ is not a viable repair for a 5 year old iMac in my opinion.
A dealer or service provider can replace the power supply, which should completely address your issue EXCEPT to the extent that repeated, abnormal shutdowns have damaged your drive directory. Using Disk Utility as a first pass may address any such concerns. More extensive directory damage will require a utility like Disk Warrior.
Quite capable of replacing PS my self, not too worried about the warranty aspect now!
Agreed, repeated shut downs may have messed the directory. The contents have been duplicated throughout the life of the machine, so backup is not an issue, a reformat and zero of the drive would be a natural progression from replacing the PS, if we go that route.
The part required for replacement in an iMac 17 inch (ALS) model is the 661-3627. In the 20 inch (ALS) model, it is a 661-3625.
Thank you for your observations and help, also for the confirmation of the part #. There are some new on UK eBay right now @ £80 - £100.

  • A105-S4074 Freezes After a Few Minutes, Sometimes with a Continuous Beep

    Win XPSP3, 1.5 GB RAM
After 10 min or so computer freezes; requires a hard shutdown (press power button for 4 sec); will re-start and run again for 10 min, or so. Checked temps with Speedfan - highest I've seen is 60+/-, which doesn't seem excessive to me. RAM has passed Memtest86+ for 12 hours.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

considering that 60 that you are seeing is in celsius which is 140 fahrenheit thats pretty close to cooking your processor. clean out the air vents and fan with compressed air. hold the fan still with a toothpick to keep it from spinning as the compressed air will spin the fan faster than it is rated to fo and cause damage.

    Hello Anonymous.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • Photoshop freezes after a few minutes

    Hi,
I'm working on a Intel coRe 2 CPU at 2.33 GHz with 3.25 GB of RAM. I opena file in photoshop, then open another and it freezes up. I've already set my scratch disks to the C drive, can anyone tell me why it's doing this?
    Thanks,
    Stan

I don't have a dedicated drive or partition. I usually always set it to C and it works fine. Does anyone know if there are issues with more than 2 GB of RAM and PS?

  • MS Excel - can't enter data after a few minutes of operation

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite, MS Excel partially freezes after a few minutes of being open.  Specifically, I cannot enter data or numbers into any cell, although other functions (including cut/pasta and entering data in the Search box) continue functioning fine.  The work-around solution is to close and reopen Excel, although after several minutes the same problem repeats.
    Any help is appreciated.

Are you running the latest Office version (14.4.6 for Office 2011)?

  • Elements Organizer 10 terminates after a few seconds, PC crashes after a few minutes

A couple of weeks ago, I installed Photoshop+Premiere Elements from the Adobe online store.  Within a couple of days, I noticed that Elements organizer would crash within a minute of starting, sometime withing a few seconds.
Also, even when I wasn't running Adobe, my PC would freeze after a few minutes with the HDD light solidly on.  My PC had never crashed before this installation.
After a little sleuthing using task manager, I found that all the memory in my system (4GB) gets suddenly hogged (within seconds) by the "Elements Organizer" process (3GB) ... I found the service correspponding to this process, "Adobe Active File Monitor v10", stopped it and set autostart to manual.  My PC no longer crashes.
I think Adobe needs to look into this one - it has all the hallmarks of a nasty memory leak.
A couple of possible clues as to why certain systems don't take well to this service:
    - I have a few very large video clips (2hours+) on my PC
    - I installed trial products like light room, CS5 before settling on Photoshop+Premiere Elements - could leftovers after uninstalling cause conflicts?
    - I have other video editors on my system that I don't use, like Corel VideoStudio and Sony Vegas.
    Thoughts?

Corrections - the process name is ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe - and unfortunately, the Adobe Active File Monitor v10 does not spawn ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe.
I disabled it by renaming it - it was under:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 10 Organizer\CAHeadless
I see from google that a lot of people have this problem...

  • I am forced to shut down computer after a few minutes of use because of pixelation that freezes up the monitor. Possible solutions?

I am forced to shut down iMac g5 after a few minutes of use due to pixelation which freezes up monitor. Any thoughts on solutions?

You may have a problem with the video chip.
    Here is how to tell...
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Bootup will be longer.
Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.
An article on how to boot into safe mode.

    Runs OK in safe mode...
Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.

firefox not responding, freezes, sometimes responds after a few minutes, other times a pop-up appears asking if I want to stop script - help please

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Losing sound after a few minutes

When using iChat for audio chats (or when using Skype), I lose sound after a few minutes. The person I'm talking too starts hearing the same thing in a repeating loop, and we have no cut off. At that point, it sometimes works to start a now voice chat, but sometimes it doesn't.
This seems to have started when I replaced an ailing snow ABS with a D-Link DSL-G604T wireless router. I've read a lot of posts here that talk about the need to turn on port forwarding, but that doesn't seem to be the problem - I can start talking, sometimes for as much as a half hour, but at some point the connection goes bad. (I thought it was just my iMac, so I tried my iBook with the same results. Then I thought it was my headset, so I tried my iSight - same thing happened.)
I'm convinced it has something to do with the router, but can't figure out exactly what's going on. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi Kirk,
Does the Buddy List close up and say it is Disconnected ?
Is the connection 1.6meg in both directions ?
What have you got System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming speed set to ?
Also how are you opening the ports in the D-Link ?
These pics suggest it has UPnP
