Sound from new MSI R9 280X - coil whine? RMA?

Hey all.
Just trying to determine if the sounds coming from my new PC's video card are normal or not. Here is my build: au.pcpartpicker.com/p/1XKQb
I hear this sound when running what I would consider low end graphics tests as well as when I booted up BF4 for the first time last night.  Graphics automatically set to high.
I've recorded a few sounds of the 'squeals' that I hope are good enough for people to make a judgement. The sound seems to be coming from the part of the video card where the power connects. I have reseated the card and tried using a different power cable. It is not an issue with the fans.
First is a capture from a test in Unigine Valley:
soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening
Second is a sound from loading Team Fortress 2 and then moving the mouse a little bit.
soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening-1
Interestingly, when I enable Vsync in Team Fortress 2 the sound disappears. If I enable Vysnc in the Unigine Valley test, it does not make a difference.
I also ran a test in the 3D Mark(did not have the option to change anything as it is only a demo) and the Ice Storm made the worst sounds from the card:
soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm
soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm-2
Considering buying 3DMark so I can muck around with the settings a bit and see which cases I hear the sound and which i don’t
I also loaded up BF4 last night and got the noise with VSYNC enabled or disabled(can record if needed). Also the same issue in Deus Ex, makes sounds with Vysnc on and off.
Can anyone with a MSI R9 280x confirm if this is normal? Is this coil whine? Reviews on newegg seem to indicate a lot of people are getting similar sounds and I’m not really thrilled with this considering it’s a brand new card and the first time I've built and i can hear this through the case and fans.
Could it be something that can be fixed by modifying voltage settings (as it seems to come from the power connection)? Or does this require an RMA?
Any advice appreciated.

so your parts are:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card

Power Supply: Antec HCG M 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - OEM (64-bit)
ok there are 2 causes of coil whine and odd noises so be totally sure its coming from the Graphics card itself by getting your mike directly over it and move it around and test other parts for noise as sometimes its The PSU (Power Supply Unit) that is doing it or it can cause it as yours is a split +12v unit (+12V1@40A, +12V2@40A) it may be the cause as Antec at times do not make reliable units (those rating is has for 2 rails look to me as being fake as they exceed its power limits combined (12v x 80A = 960W so it can probably do 40A on one but then the other will be terrible at 22.5A as it looks like there doing virtual +12v rails with 40A OCP fuses)) so its suspect as it may not be behaving well!

  • Msi gtx 970 coil whine and fsb up to 100

is this considered normal since the coilwhine occurs when i play medium gpu demanding games
i dont think fsb 100 should be considered normal?

CoD:AW is only 'medium demanding' so long as you don't have lots of AA or supersampling enabled. As soon as i ramp up the AA or turn on supersampling, GPU will easily hit 100% and get really hot.
Also, FB is frame buffer usage, so VRAM/memory usage. CoD deliberately uses 100% of VRAM available to it at any given time - i forget the reasons but all the PC reviews mention this and its beneficial in some way - i suspect its all the pre-loading of textures it does to reduce hitching as you go from area to area.
So 100% FB is normal, and 100% GPU usage in general may also be, depending on settings.
As for coil whine, most MSTI GTX 970s seem to suffer with it. My Asus GTX 970 (got it after RMAing my msi one) has none, thankfully.

  • No sound from new device

    hi
just bought a new x-fi xtreme but i'm getting no sound from it at all.
in device manager it sees it working and no problems.
latest drivers are installed & old drivers uninstalled.
under the windows sound mixer which sits on my taskbar, it has cross through the speaker, and if i click it to open the mixer, it says "no audio device is installed" even though if i hover over the icon, it will show SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio & volume at 0.
if i open the creative volume panel, the volume control is at 0 and greyed out.
when i run the diagnostics tests i get these results:
    LogCreative Diagnostics Test Log
    Detected device:
    SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio

    2/28/2009 08:25:05PM DirectSound Tests Fail.
i have my speakers connected to line 2(green) & headphones connected to line 3.
anyone know what could be causing this?

never mind, i took it back and got my money back, bought a xonar instead...which works perfect

  • MSI A88XM-E45 coil whine? or other annoying sound

My new system is producing a high pitched sound that sounds similar to an old HDD seeking but higher pitched and sometimes more like a constant whine. It only occurs when The graphics chip is working, if I restart X in Linux it stops until I've logged back in and seems to respond differently depending upon what is displayed on the screen. For example, if the background is solid black it will correspond 100% to moving the mouse cursor and will otherwise be silent. I may only be hearing this because it's my first silent build and would be extremely silent without this issue. Be that as it may, it's very annoying. Has anyone here heard of an issue like this before? I really don't know where to begin as far as troubleshooting goes.
    System specs:
    Corsair Obsidian 550D case
    MSI A88XM-E45 mobo
    AMD 7850K "Kaveri" APU
    G.SKILL RipjawsX F3-2133C9D-16GXH 16GB 2X8GB DDR3-2133
    no video card
    Dual Acer H236HL Bid monitors
    2 x ADATA SX900 2.5" 128GB SSD in RAID0
6 HDDs between 320GB and 3TB in an LVM2 volume group for storage (~6.5TB total)
Seasonic S12 600watt PSU (9 years old and still producing rock solid voltages) <-- I will be replacing this with a Seasonic X-460FLII Fanless 460watt PSU as soon as it arrives
6 x GELID Solutions Silent 12 fans connected to a Swiftech 8W-PWM-SPL-ST 8 Way PWM Splitter
Two of those fans are on a Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler, the other 4 are case fans, all are connected to the splitter which is connected to the CPU fan header and a SATA power connector via a SATA to Molex adapter

can you record the sound and upload it somewhere and give us a link?
it may be coil wine and possibly it may be coming from your power supply so see if you can  isolate where its coming from?
Unfortunately I don't have anything resembling a decent microphone. However I will be getting a new power supply relatively soon (it's back-ordered) I'll reply to this thread if the sound persists.

  • No sound from new speakers

We got a set of bose speakers, plugged everything in as instructed but there is no sound coming from the cable box.  Got a new cable box and hdmi cable, still no sound.  The bluray works great.  What gives?

Since the Bose Cinemate Series II speaker system has only one usable active digital input.... the easiest way to have both the Blu-ray player and the cable box playing in the Bose without having to keep switching the optical cable back and forth between the two sources, is to have both of those devices hooked into the HDMI inputs on the TV and just have the Bose's optical cable running from the optical out on the TV into the optical input on the Bose.

  • No sound from new Viewsonic monitor

I just got a new mini--hooked it up to the Viewsonic VA1930wm monitor and no sound comes from the monitor. When I go into the sound preferences--it doesn't seem to see it. The mini itself has sound--but I want it to come from the monitor. There are no drivers available..am I doing something wrong?--or should I get a different monitor--and if so--which one?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Most monitors with audio have an audio in 1/8th inch input jack to run a cable between the monitor and the computer's sound output jack. Usually it comes supplied with a cable to go between the computer and the monitor that fits that jack. If your monitor was missing such a cable, you can buy it at Radio Shack. Look at the under side or back of the monitor for where the video cable comes in. Somewhere near there should be the audio jack. If there are multiple, you may need to split the channels coming out of the stereo built-in to the back of the Mac Mini. Which Mac Mini model do you have? Is it an Intel or PowerPC?

  • No sound from new computer

I purchased a HP Pavillion a6700f  with Vista last month and tried to hook up my four year old self powered Boston Acoustic 735 digital speakers to it.  It uses a single analog line that I plugged into the green jack on the back of the computer as indicated in the instructions.  No joy.  I updated the Realtek driver and still no success.  I took the speakers into work and plugged them into the HP there (using xp) and they work fine.  After three hours of the India tech guys taking control of my system, I was informed that Vista does not support speakers that worked on the XP operating system and I would have to buy a new set (which he was only too happy to sell to me at that time).  Supposedly there is a tech report that speaks to this issue, but the tech guy could not provide me with a number or web address for it.  I have had no success finding it.  Does anyone know if this is true?  If not, any clues on what other options I have?

OK. First make sure you those the kind of speakers that need to be powered via the power adapter and that you have a green audio plug. The orange connector used in older models don't have that port needed on any new pc anymore.
I call bullcrap (excuse my language, but can't keep quite to a such a Tech's comments, being a technician myself) that you need to get "vista" speakers. There's no such thing as XP speakers or Vista speakers. Speakers don't need drivers and are not related to the Operating System any way way, shape or form. All you do is power them and plug them in depending on your configuration.
Make sure they're plugged in the back of the computer via the greem front audio output color coated port and make sure they are turned on and that the volume isn't muted.
Then in Vista, login the pc, look on the bottom right of the comuter screen next to your clock, there's a white speaker icon. Just go with the mouse over it and it should say this:
    Volume xxx
    Speakers
    Realtek Digital xxxxxxxxx
If instead of speakers it says HDMI Output or Realtek Digital Output then it's set to the wrong playback device. So rightclick on that white speaker icon, choose Playback Devices and when the new windows comes up look in the middle. It should say Speakers, Enabled, Working. Also make sure it has the green check mark on it.
If it doesn't rightclick on the grey speakers picture and choose Set as Default Device and then Apply or OK and restart the pc.
Also on the top choose the Sounds tab and make sure it says Windows Default sound scheme and also check the voume and make sure it's not muted or low.
    Best of luck.

  • Muffled sound from new imported CD

It started with cds with small scratches on them that were poor quality. Now even the brand new cds that get imported have parts of the song that are distorted. Its not all through the song , just sertain bits.

Are you using AAC or MP3? And at what bit rate?
Also, try burning a CD using a different codec like WMP or LAME. Then add folder to iTunes. Do you get the same result?

  • Unable to get sound from new ATV installation using either HDMI or optical audio to Bose receiver.  Good video using HDMI.

Need help setting up my Apple TV.  I have good video, but no audio using either the HDMI cable by itself or by connecting a optical video cable through the aux receiver for home theater.  I've replaced the Apple TV box, swapped out HDMI cables, reset the Apple TV box, all to no avail.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Connected only using HDMI to Onkyo Receiver and HDMI out to Samsung 1080p TV. So far so good.

  • MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB - TERRIBLE coil-whine!

    Hi All,
I am very disappointed with my brand new MSI 970, well "brand new" I had to return it to Novatech as it was unbearably loud and waiting for feedback from them, I have uploaded a video on Youtube.
I have had a MSI GTX 760 for over a year and I was very excited to buy another MSI product, however I have to say that you have really screwed it up this time.
A quick Google search and you can see that the problem is not isolated (there is also some other users who posted videos on YouTube).

Yes I did return it to my vendor here in UK and the card should be with them tomorrow for testing but as I still within the 7 days I just ask for the money back and I will get something else instead.
Shame really as I am a huge MSI fan however here I see that they have saved money on component compare with its direct competitor, just Google MSI GTX 970 COIL WHINE or even check comments under my video on YouTube and you see that it is not an isolate case.
I agree with you, my MSI card (current MSI card GTX 760) has SOMETIME and NOT SO LOUD coil-whine if you really stick your head inside the case, which I really don't do often  however trust me this card sounded like R2-D2 from Star Wars!
I am writing an article right now about this and the fan issue on our website, we review videogame and not hardware but in this case...

  • Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum

The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
    What can i do?

Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply.

If you do not know how to even check the answer is most likely no. It is an asrock board so check the asrock site for the latest version and see what your bios lists as current version when entering. Otherwise contact asrock
