Sound icon disabled no sound from internal speakers

When I start my MacBook Pro I can hear the familiar "apple start" sound from the sepeakers. But about an hour ago the sound icon on the top bar is disabled (grey), no sound is coming from the computer speakers. In Settings > Sound, the volume bar is at max level, but also disabled. External speakers and headphones work fine.
What is this?

With nothing connected into the earphone jack, do you see a red glo inside the earphone jack?
If yes, then try insertting and removing an earphone plug, several times, to see if you can get the red glo to stop.
Else you might need to make an appointment with an Apple Approved Service Provider.

  • My sound switches from internal speakers to apple Tv and i dont have an apple tv device

I am having problems with sound. My speakers will switch from internal speakers to Apple TV for no reason when I am on a certain wifi network and ask for a password. I do not have an apple TV and in order for the sound to come out on the internal speakers i have to manually go into the preferences and switch back to internal speakers. This does this constantly while i am listening to music. Is there a way to shut off the feature so it will stay on internal speakers? This has happened ever since i made the upgrade to OS mountain lion. I never did this before. Thank you for your help.

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.

  • Sound problems with Yosemite when switching from internal speakers to earbuds

After upgrading to Yosemite on my Macbook Pro, when I switch from using the internal speakers for sound and plug in my (Apple) earbuds, the sound stops working.  The sound also stops when I do the reverse and unplug my earbuds, nothing comes out of the internal speakers.  The only way to restore sound is to go into System Preferences, Sound, and select the output device (internal speakers, earphones, etc..).  Anyone else experiencing this problem after installing Yosemite, or know of a fix?

    I have the same problem..
there is something else happened twice with me, I plugged my macbook with a HDMI cable to the TV, and everything was ok, until I closed the macbook (sleep mode), when I opened the mac again,, the sound has gone! No sound from TV or macbook,, the only solution is to "RESTART"

  • Sound from internal speakers keeps coming and going.

My internal speakers aren't working consistently. One second I hear sound and then the next I hear nothing. I checked  "System Preferences > Sound > Output" and can see that the selected device keeps randomly switching from Internal Speakers to Digital Out to Headphones. Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
    Thx

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Very poor sound from internal speakers, very good on headphones.

    Hi,
I hope you can give some advice.
New to all this so apologies if protocols are broken etc
    New 20" imac, running Leopard.
very thin, tinny sound from internal speakers (similar to hearing someone's else's walkman
on the train). when I plug headphones in its great no probs.
Advice please! I don't want to send it back I'm halfway through my assignment.
    Hadders

I just realized I've never heard the internal speakers on my new iMac, I have always used good 2.1 speakers since I got my eMac years ago and the internals really sucked.
I was just curious, have you heard anybody elses built in iMac speakers and did they sound better than yours or the same? Maybe at the Apple Store?
I don't know, I just didn't know if they really improved them. Maybe other iMac users can chime in on internal speaker quality. The only reason I said all this was because you mentioned that headphones sound great, which is the same port that a set of external speakers would go.
Sorry to hear you had to send it back for that. Here's hoping you didn't have to send it in for what the speakers really do sound like.

    Hello  @Landon3400 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your notebook only has sound, through your headphones.
Try updating the driver with the following download and tell me if it resolves the issue: IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver.
Furthermore, check out this thread that has a lot of great suggestions for issues with no sound: Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time and this document for no sound in Windows 8: No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8)

  • No sound from internal speakers on HP G5000 G5056EA

Hi, my son upgraded my old laptop to Windows 10 over the weekend.  It is working great apart from the sound no longer works on the internal speakers even thought the driver is correct and says it is working correctly.  Anyone got any ideas how to resolve?

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. Have you tried to plug in headphones to see if that works?Have you tried connecting to your TV via HDMI?In the device manager have you tried selecting " Find New Hardware"?  Have you tried to Uninstall the Sound Driver? If not please do the following;1. Uninstall the Sound Driver in Device Manager. 2. Restart your Notebook. 3. Reinstall the Sound Driver.  Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Here is a document I found for you called HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 10, 8).   Here is troubleshooting when drivers are not available yet. Some updated Windows 10 drivers are already available, others will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Have a great day!
