Sound in a widget

I am trying to embed a sound in a widget for iBooks author.
The sound format is arc, extension is .m4a
The audio works fine in dashboard on a mac, and gives no errors importing into iBooks author, but fails to play once on the device. the iBook displays the message 'Cannot play audio file'.
Has anyone else expereiced htis problem?

Dumb question but I have to ask it...If the frame is paused how do I go in and un-pause it?Also, I may have caused the pause because I inserted a "button" on the slide so that the slide would not advance automatically. As you well know inserting a button and adding it to the top of your timeline making it clear in color sets it up as a pause button. Does that mean if I take that button out my audio will work? And if that makes my audio work will my slide then automatically advance to the next slide?
So many questions....

How to get the sound to play in a widget through an LMS?

I have files that are aggregated. My reporting is set to SCORM 1.2. I know my project is not SCORM compliant. My project plays and transitions when in the LMS however when I get to the widget for my history sections no sound is produced. I have two widgets that do not play sound. Is there something I can do to make the sound play? I've inserted the sound into the widgets as normal.
Please any advice would be appreciated.

I think what you desire is a triggered event ---- mentioned earlier in the forum...I tried to find implementation of this and made no progress...maybe others can point a way forward......

What is really saved in a Sync?

This is a quote from Apple:
"When you sync your iPhone to your computer, settings and other information on your iPhone are automatically backed up to your computer, including mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, and widget settings. You can restore this information if you need to (if you get a new iPhone, for example, and want to transfer your previous settings to it). "
Yesterday I did a restore and none of the items above were restored. Does anyone know a way to determine if they are still recoverable?

I fugured I had nothing much to loose and just entered a couple notes and did a restore and the notes were recovered. I wish I could get back my previous notes. Yesterday I went to the Apple store becausemy phone would not sync and it also wouldn't update or restore. I got error -18 when I did a restore. the aplle genious suggested a reset and I agreed to it knowing it would "erase all content and settings". After the reset, the phoen was able to sync and restore. When I got home, I did a restore, and selected to restore the previous settings and most things did not get recoverd as previously mentioned. Is there anyway to try to find an older sync from a couple of dyas ago and try restoring again?

Applet for figuring bitrate based on target file size?

Occasionally when I'm exporting quicktimes for emailing to people with known restrictions on incoming file sizes, I'd love to be able to specify the target file size as opposed to the bitrate.
Does anyone know of any applets that can generate a rough estimate of what you should set the bitrate to in order to achieve a target file size given the length of the clip?

Can I backup my Text Messages on my mac?

At this point after using the iPhone for almost a year I have been getting a prompt pop-up message every time I access SMS mailbox saying "your mailbox is almost full." This blocks new messages from coming in and I am forced to delete important conversations to accommodate for space. I hardly use the 4GB on the phone. My questions are the following.
1. Is there a way to increase mailbox size? (and/or)
2. Is there a way to backup my messages on the computer?

Make sure the iPhone is updated. Just click the iPhone on the left side of iTunes> Check for Updates.
iTunes will automatically backup your SMS messages. iTunes does not have the option to recover specific messages, only recover all messages from the last backup.

Restoring Notes to new iPhone

I just received a new iPhone after the old one wasn't working properly. I've been able to get most everything back to the way it was except for the notes. I had several notes on my old iphone, and I would desperately like to somehow sync them to my new one. Is there any way to do that? I figured that since notes can be synced back onto the phone after a restore, that they are saved somewhere.

Do you sync your iPhone regularly with iTunes? If so, when you received your replacement phone, you should have been given the option to sync your old content to the new iPhone when you first connected it into iTunes.

Are contacts actually restored from a backup?

So like many other people, all of my contacts were wiped in the 2.0 upgrade.
I've read a million support threads and the official apple page, but I can't seem to figure out if my contacts will return if I do a "restore". I already let the iphone backup replace my libraries, and all of my music and photos are back - but not the notes or test message history etc. I know for SURE that restore is going to wipe my phone AGAIN - but not if everything will come back.

All this - but not the phone numbers?
It seems like if you do not sync your phonebook you are SOL. Is this true? Why does not Apple warn that you should sync before upgrading. the previous upgrade to 1.1.4 or whatever it was called did not delete anything.
I typed all of my numbers in manually or captured them from phone calls. I do not use outlook - so have never synced my contacts with anything. Are they lost forever? I do not want to go through another long restore to find out that they are still lost, and wow I have to re-sync all of my photos and music for another two hours. I am very frustrated with Apple right now.
Has anyone sucessfully recovered lost contacts from a backup? Are they saved even though they are not listed as saved?

Contacts are NOT saved. Contact "favorites" are.
Think about it. Contacts are synced from Outlook or Address Book, so there would be no reason to save them in a backup. The contacts remain in those programs. Same with iTunes media like songs, videos, podcasts. They're stored in the iTunes library. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't back up these data elsewhere, just as you would for important data and documents. It's just there's no reason for the iPhone to do so.
What IS backed up is information that is not obtained by syncing, namely call history, sound settings, and the other data that are listed in your post.

Sound disappeared in Safari and BBC Radio Widget

Two days ago, without warning, the sound disappeared from both Safari and my BBC Radio Widget. All other sound on the computer is fine and if I play an MP3 through Safari it will play but otherwise there is silence. (Problem was discovered by our 5 year-old who was disappointed that there was no sound coming from the CBeebies websites!).
Have checked all other sound options and everything is in order.
Went to local Mac re-seller and they shrugged their shoulders and said try here.
Any suggestions?

You're welcome.
If there is a preference file associate with the widget, move it to the trash before you reinstall a new copy. The preference file will be name widget-com.(name assigned to widget).plist. You can try a search in spotlight on look in your User Library>Preferences folder.

No Sound on Interactive Keynote Widget?

OBJECTIVE: I am trying to imbed an interactive Keynote Widget into an iBook with short audio clips that play after transitions between slides. The Keynote presentation consists of 8 slides that generally consist of an image, a couple of buttons (shapes with associated links to specific slides), a text box or two, and some have inserted audio .m4a files (less than 5 seconds in length). The audio objects are set to 'start after transition'. The overall presentation is set as a 'Links only' presentation type.
PROBLEM: After testing succesfully in Keynote, I saved the presentation, dragged it into iBooks author, and previewed it in iBooks (running on OSX 10.9.2 Mavericks). The widget works splendidly... except the sound. Audio objects aren't activated by transitions. No sound at all out of the Keynote Widget.
WHAT I'VE TRIED: I have checked that sound is working right on my Mac. In fact, Audio widgets on the next page of the same iBook work fine. I changed the audio files in the keynote presentation with a different one that was already working in my iBook as an audio widget. I have tried putting the keynote presentation into a untouched standard Apple template. No sound at all from the Keynote Widget. I also looked for solutions in online help files, Apple's Developer Forums for iBooks Author, and here in this section of the Apple Support Communities. I only found two similar questions/problems neither with a posted resolution (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22443281#22443281 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/22444086#22444086).

That being the case, Apple has stated that recorded narration will not work in the keynote widget (see iBooks Author: About the Keynote widget - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5067).
Self-Playing and Recorded presentations
Self-Playing presentations and Recorded presentations with voiceover narration may not work as expected. Readers will be able to view and manually advance your presentation, but recorded narration and timings won’t be available.
The same article seems to indicate that some audio files should work in the widget, evidently as sound objects.
Keynote files can contain media—such as images, movies, and audio—but don’t use a Keynote file just to add media to your book.
I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to work yet though. If we can figure out how to get sound objects to work you could still put the audio in your widget, just break it up into a seperate sound file for each slide, and advance to next slide on click. Someone would have to figure out how to get the sound objects to play like they should though...
With regard to the other audio files: That is weird that Apple told you to use .m4p format for audio. Their online documentation says to use m4a. The following is an excerpt from iBooks Author: supported file formats - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2838.
Video and audio files: M4V, M4ANote: For the Media widget, you can add a video file or an audio file (in a format QuickTime supports) to your book. You can convert other types of files using iMovie, QuickTime Player, or Compressor. For the HTML widget, the suggested file formats are MP4 video files and M4A audio files.
Either the tech who emailed you saying to use .m4p is mixed up, or their online documentation is wrong.
Please let us know if changing to m4p works for you. That may help others out.

Problem: using the sound widget AND gallery in one page

Hello,
I simply tried to have a play-music player/button at a page, and a gallery to swipe through images too.
It caused weird problems. The iPad behaves strange, the iBook (previewed at iPad) doesn't work anymore.
Several times I had to make a total reset of iPad3.
The same result with a combination of a keynote widget (image-sequence) and music.
Isn't it possible to to offer a slidehow with sound?

the idea is to watch the gallery fotos or the keynote slideshow and listen to music/sound same time.
for any reason it did work in the beginning. but now, having the media widget/audio in the same page as keynote or gallery, the application does not run smoothly anymore, particularly the swiping is blocked.
I already made 2 chapters to avoid too many widgets in one chapter.
there are: 1 keynote slideshow (1024x768 images) , 1 gallery, and each 3 audio widgets to let the user choose different sounds. but actually the probelms start with pacing the first audio widget already...

Pandora Widget - No sound??

The Pandora widget showed up on our Fios Widgets here in North Central Texas in late October. When I tried it, set it up, it came right up and worked fine except--- no sound! All the other widgets with sound (you tube etc.) function just fine.
Called support and did online chat to try and fix the problem. I was online for and hour and a half before the technician finally gave up. I later got a call later that they decided it was some sort of network problem. That was Nov. 9. The widget is still there, but still produces no sound.
Any one else have this kind of problem? Was it fixed? Does your pandora widget work properly?

Why does my html widget not play sound in ibooks?

I've designed a widget that plays sound correctly in every other browser. It uses an AAC-MPEG4 with the .m4a file extension on all of the sounds. I know the code is working correctly because as I said, it works in any browser. I've checked to volume controls and speakers of the ipad, they work and are turned all the way up. I just wonder if ibooks somehow does not support the javascript .play() command...

This proves what I believed and that is you are not naming the file correctly. It has got a hidden file extension and if you were using Windows, I would have told you how to reveal the file names properly including hidden extensions of known file names. I know nothing about MACs so you have yto wait until Murray Summers or John Waller comes here. They know about Apple MACs and they have been in the business longer than anybody here.
In windows, if we want Notepad to keep the names as it is we normally name the file as:
"welcome.html" including the quotes so that Notepad will know that it is not the normal text file to be opened in notepad or wordpad (TWO text editors in Windows)
Perhaps you should use my file as a template and then change the text to:
